Taking a little break from my usual personal finance content, I went to Google Seattle campus to interview people about their salaries and practical tips on how to get hired. A huge thank-you to the kind & brave people who participated in this interview.
I hope the video is helpful if you aspire to break into tech or land a job at Google, while also shedding light on salary transparency.
    Let's normalize talking about money!

I don’t think anyone can become software engineer . I took a coding class for the first time in my life and it was literally a self taught class. Professor didn’t teach at all and just wanted us to pick up the book and solve problems ourselves. One of the thing we had to do was make a tic tac toe game. I understood the concept of having player 1 , player 2 inputting X’s and O’s and wins if three of the same letter connects but my god I just couldn’t write it in code….I only took the class to explore area of coding since I already graduated college. Sadly I dropped the class halfway into semester because I just could not commit time to coding everyday because of work. I wish I could go back and the way coding is setup it’s not something you can ask people for help. It’s more of a how willing are you to work to try and find a solution to the problem.

    • @FinanceWithChi
      @FinanceWithChi  7 місяців тому +4

I agree coding is not for everyone and I myself didn’t enjoy doing it full-time. But if you want to get in tech and enjoy the tech salaries, there are definitely other careers like Product/Program Management, Tech Sales, Marketing, etc.

Cool video! I used to work at Google Kirkland (where the interviews are) and Google Seattle (where the first entrance shot is taken) and worked there for over 5 years. I liked working in both offices and it's nice to see some familiar faces! Salary is tough not just because it's a sensitive topic but because a lot of it depends on stock so can fluctuate year by year and month by month depending on the stock price. But I worked at Amazon before Google and I got a decent pay increase when I jumped from Amazon to Google. However, Amazon stock went up a lot more during my time at Google so I ended up making much less at Google than I would have had I stayed at Amazon. Oh well, c'est la vie. I was much happier at Google though and there's no price for happiness!

That’s the misconception that many have. It’s actually unlawful for your employer to punish or retaliate against you in any way for having conversations about your pay: www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/rights-we-protect/your-rights/your-rights-to-discuss-wages.
Because the gaps in compensation can be tens of thousands of dollars for the same role/level in the same company, my goal for this video is to promote salary transparency, and people can use this info to negotiate for the pay they deserve. I personally know colleagues in one of these Big Tech companies who were massively underpaid compared to their peers even though they’re high performers.

@@FinanceWithChi yes! I believe the most interesting thing about Google is Android and their products. I've never seen anybody actually interview an Android developer... I know cloud is pretty important for their revenue but it's boring stuff and the normal person doesn't really care about cloud stuff development. Only developers would. Now if you found a developer or an engineer who was in the Android OS or pixel product line management and production, I would sit down with that person and ask him dozen questions for an hour. However I think these types of people would probably be very secretive. They won't be authorized to answer much because of how sensitive the information is. Probably similar to how no one's ever interviewed an apple iphone product engineer. And I'm not talking about those pre-planned interviews where an Apple exec talks about the release of their product. I'm talking about just some staff engineer Who works on iPhones directly is candidly asked on the streets about what they do. They won't answer. Sorry for the long message

I’d say android is far from being one of the most interesting things going on at Google. It’s their intelligence that is the most powerful. They have an incomprehensible amount of information on almost anything and on the whole worlds population. They also are getting better everyday at processing all this data in many ways depending on what they’re seeking. Their platform is so stacked now that they could manipulate a lot of the world today.

When you’re not a PR rep and you reveal which team/product you work on specifically and disclosing your rank and giving ideas about your salary is such an alarming move. I’m sure some of these guys will get called by Google’s security department. Telling the world you’re a high value target for cyber criminals or worse (kidnappers) nowadays is scary when you’re just an average joe in your everyday life with no bodyguards. Don’t fall for those public questions just to massage your professional ego. You could just tell them you’re some kind of engineer and be done with it.

To know the true compensation that you deserve, having context like the title and level matters.
We understand the importance of privacy, that’s why we don’t share any PII of the folks in the interviews beyond general information you would normally find on public places like LinkedIn and social media.

@@FinanceWithChi their face is PII enough though, especially if their level and position are shown plus which projects they work on. If I was a malicious person, I could literally loiter around the area and scope for those guys just by face, and it doesn’t take long to know their identity by matching up the other info after that. Just like first name is not PII until it’s combined with the surname.

@@FinanceWithChi and I’m not putting the blame on you whatsoever. I’m directing my original comment to whoever gets interviews like these to give generic info and not voluntarily give other info who they weren’t asked about. Like that guy in the video, you didn’t ask him what he’s doing but he proceeded to talk about specific project and team he’s in.

I would absolutely never answer a question like this, and I’m in a similar position. Any camera in my face, I’m OUT.

It’s good for workers (all of us) to have transparent pay information.
Plus you can look it up online. It’s no secret.

Can we get a more diverse video next time like with people of color?

I will do my best! My goal is to include more diversity in these interviews, but it’s not easy sometimes. We literally interviewed anyone there willing to be filmed.

“Dive deep and be curious” - can take the engineer out of the Amazon, but can’t take the Amazon out of the engineer 😂

A video where someone chooses to stand outside of the camera frame, absurd lol

I’m new to UA-cam and still camera shy 😅. But hopefully that doesn’t affect the quality of messages as the focus is on the speakers
