Why do you check backlash if your not regearing? If your not changing bearing race or bearing do you need to check backlash? Like just swapping the ring gear basically
If you change any part of the ring and pinion you should check the backlash and the pattern. That includes bearings or gears. You want to be sure it's right before it goes together.
@mechanicgray ooo I see..I was thinking of when I installed my lunch box locker, where I did have to take the ring off to install it but I didn't check the backlash. I just assumed it would be going on the same way. But this you would because your pressing on new bearings to basically a new carrier?

Kinda surprised the ring gear wasn't damaged after the carrier smashed to the concrete from that height.
Good thing it only gave you a gear oil bath though as opposed to a concussion and stitches!
