Hey Ryan...Frost usually builds up in your freezer when moisture or humid air is working its way into the fridge or freezer then frost builds up around the coils. Maybe check the gasket around the door and make sure you are getting a tight seal. Limit the number of times you go into your freezer each day. Ive noticed in some of your videos the fridge door swings open when you are driving that may indicate a week seal as well. If warm air gets trapped inside the freezer it will rest around the freezer coil and freeze turning into frost and ice build up. Anyways i hope this helps. Keep up the great Vidoes Bro.

It's also just an inherent flaw of that freezer design. The freezer being in the same space as the regular refrigerator is one of the top reasons these fridges don't last very long. The big temperature differences seem to be the root of a lot of break downs. There aren't a lot of other choices for a van, but in household applications that design should generally be avoided.

Vanlife and RV living is HUGE here in Florida. RV lifer here! Regarding your freezer, you’ll have to turn off your fridge to completely defrost it. It’s a pain because you’ll have to empty your fridge of anything that’s perishable and pack into a cooler, but it’s the most efficient solution. Use a couple old towels to soak up the water. Beware of those fire ants. They are nasty little buggers!

Hi, if you have an issue with food eating ants, go on line or find some peppermint oil. Get a spray bottle and put a very small amount into the spray bottle with a good amount of water. Then spray it where you may have ants coming in. Your van will smell nice and the ants hate that peppermint scent. It works for me

Not a tip for defrosting but for keeping frost free: put some kind of moisture absorber in there. I was defrosting my home freezer weekly for a while because it would screw up the fridge as well. I put about a half box of baking soda in each area and havent had to do it in 9 or 10 months now. I actually didnt even think the baking soda would work (although it got recommended multiple times) and that Id have to get one of those chemical moisture absorbers, but it worked fine. To my knowledge, theres no easy to defrost without turning it off. Good luck. Keep us updated.

About the freezer, get some freeze dried food or fresh and eat it as you get it. Use up all the stuff in the fridge. If you can remove the fridge, do so and set it outside wide open. If you keep it in there, be EXTREMELY diligent with having towels and wringing them out constantly. It'll take a couple days to defrost by itself without a fan or heater to accelerate the process. DO NOT STAB IT TO BREAK IT UP. Hit up a friend's house to do it?

For the freezer, the legitimate way to defrost is to empty everything out of the fridge unplug the fridge let the ice melt clean, clean it out and then put everything back in. The MacGyver way 😂 to defrost the freezer is to basically heat the ice. So you would need a blow torch, the the kind you use for crème brûlée, you can find them in Walmart. Heat the ice and it would melt. You need to know that’s a messy way though you need to put down some towels and then just chuck the ice out as it as it melts. I would suggest emptying everything out of the fridge and doing it the proper way, especially if your fridge smells, give it a good clean with some water with bleach in it, then let it dry completely and then use baking baking soda in your fridge so put a baking soda container in the fridge and it would soak up all of the smells.

To defrost, you will probably have to turn off your refrigerator and take your food out to store in a cooler for a short time. You can use a hair blow dryer to speed up the defrosting and put a pan below it and towels inside and around the outside as well.
I don't know if any water would leak around to the back of the refrigerator, and I don't know much about van refrigerators, but if you can pull it out at a campsite to let it defrost and rinse it with a hose to speed up defrosting that would be good too.

What kind of smell is it? Could be gas escaping, that would explain the frost too, or it could be a bad seal, if your fridge door opens very easily then it's probably not sealing well and thawing it out won't really do anything, since it will just freeze again in a couple days.
As for thawing, by far my favorite method is to blast the ice with a hair dryer. With that compartment I would blast the bottom and sides until the ice came loose enough to dig it out of there, so you don't have water everywhere. Or you can just blast it until it all melts.
I usually did it that way before I got a modern anti frost fridge and it's way better than waiting, because you can just take the food out, blast it with a dryer, wipe it down with vinegar (really good for cleaning and removing smells), then you're ready to put the food back in like 10-15 mins, so nothing will go bad.

I’ve always defrosted freezers with a blow dryer on hot. Then you don’t have to remove everything, just put a towel underneath

Get some bungee cords for you fridge, I think that should stop your door opening all the time. It could be why your freezer keeps frosting so much. 👍

Kinda trashy to not at least get something to go from Cracker Barrel after using their parking lot to sleep. I agree with other comments that you have a very very dirty van. No wonder it smells.

Hey bro, it’s also cheaper to get your propane tank refilled at like a ace hardware or tractor supply. Can be like $18 to get a 20lb tank refilled opposed to Walmart sometimes is $23

Probably already suggested but, unplug the fridge, leave it open and let it defrost. Best if you can remove the whole unit so you don't have to deal with the thawing water. To prevent it from happening in the future, don't pack too much food in the freezer. The air needs to be able to circulate. Make sure all vents are clear of ice build up as well. HTH

Someone probably already said it but just in case they haven’t. One handed egg crack much easier when you do the initial tap on a flat surface as opposed to the edge of your pan.

The smell in your fridge is most likely the ice buildup, That ice is made from moisture and can pull the smell off foods that were ether placed in it or around it you have to defrost it by taking everything out and letting the ice melt with the fridge off, which can take a few hrs to do so would recommend buying a cooler and ice to store your food while that's going on you should be defrosting your mini fridge at least once every 3 months or so.

Love your rig! Yes, you need to shut down the frige and thaw it out. Use a cooler for your food while doing it... That frost glob in the freezer will hold all kinds of smells. I think once you thaw and clean, it will be scent free. Toss in an opened box of Arm and Hammer in the future! Good luck. Keep up the good work.

Replace your fridge gasket. It's not sealing so warm air is getting in and since heat rises, the freezer is working harder to keep cool thus ice buildup.
You might want to defrost it for a couple of days during your trip.
What does the smell, smell like? Have you checked your egg carton? I've had them break at the bottom and not notice it until I go to pick that egg out of the carton and it's stuck there.

To melt off the ice quick in the fridge you can turn it off and blow a hair dryer on it. As I type this I realize you probably don’t have a hair dryer…
When available you should look at refilling your Propane tank at Tractor Supply. Walmart looks cheaper but the blue rhino tanks from Walmart aren’t filled up all the way. That’s how they keep them competitively priced.
When my tanks expire (need the inspection updated) I exchange them at Walmart then refill them at tractor supply until they expire. Lastly you can pull up the propane at Tractor Supply and let them know you need propane via the app AND usually pay at the refill spot, you never have to go inside.

  • @davesarn

The smell is almost certainly in the ice buildup. Happens to me all the time. You have to empty the whole fridge and defrost the whole thing unfortunately. Very common problem with those units. There should be a replacement door for the freezer depending on which model that is. Try to get one and put it on and be cognizant to keep the door open as little as possible. Especially In warm environments. The condensation builds up quickly.

Hey Ryan. Another tip…go to a place that actually fills the LP tanks (ACE hardware does this). They’ll fill to a full 20 lbs. blue rhino and other tank exchange companies fill to 15 (as of 2008). At ACE they weigh it and fill in front of me so I know I’m getting a full 20. FYI. Night and day difference in tank life.
