Making an electric autumn guitar - robot project

- My first ever guitar project. My brother's been telling me to build a guitar for quite some time now and after seeing Modustrial Makers latest guitar, we decided to give it a try and make this autumn themed guitar. It's far from perfect but I hope you like it..
We found some leftover planks of thermally treated oak, white ash, and some walnut.. After cutting and planing the wood, we assembled the patterns we thought would work and glued the body and neck blocks. For this purpose, we used ordinary acetate glue with half an hour of open time. After removing the clamps, blocks were left on the room temperature for a week before any further work so the inner tensions could settle and so that different wood types come to the same moisture level. Body and neck piece were then milled on a kuka kr150. I made the design in auto cad and rhinoceros, and also used rhinocam and irbcam software for milling. Tension rod is made from two 4mm round cold rolled steel rods, one 4mm inbus screw and six 4mm nuts. The tension rod will be inserted into a neck groove under the fret board. Fret positions are marked with a caliper measure and sawed with a 0.5 mm thick saw blade. Frets are then hammered into cut grooves, edges are filed, leveled and polished. Details on the body are shaped with biax tool and belt sander. Two small red Japanese maple leafs are glued on the front of the body with acetate glue, holes for the wiring and knobs are drilled and the whole body is sanded and coated with three coats of water based matte varnish. This varnish is designed to accentuate pores in the oak to give it more of the autumn look. Between each coat, everything is sanded with 400 grit sandpaper. The last thing was to assemble all the guitar pieces. I didn't write down the amount of work hours that went into this project but I would say it took more than 100 work hours over the period of 2 weeks..
Special thanks to Krešimir Klen- Fish for the final guitar test!.. :D
Thank you for watching this timelapse video project and don't forget to like and subscribe! :D If this video gets a decent amount of views and interest, the plan is to make three more guitars, each themed over one of the four seasons!

This is literally so beautiful. It made my heart warm when I saw the results, it is absolutely amazing. KEEP EXISTING PLEASE.
ahahaha, Thank you Haylee! :D
world new record... lignum's longest video.. 15 minute... great project.. i really really enjoy the process... i really happy watch this a whole minute..
Yeah, editing was a pain.. I'm glad you like it! thank you! :D
Watching that ball mill profile the headstock was so satisfying.
I'm thinking about getting a slowly moving time lapse camera rig to get these kind of shots even better.. :D
I didn't expect at all to see a double-action truss rod being made.
Anyway, it's a beautiful guitar, made through very efficient use of timbers.
I dont even know what that is.
I thought that was really cool, but they're so cheap to buy!! Lol i do appreciate the craftsmanship though
Iam afraid it not best design decision. If it will broke for some reasons (for example bad material of nuts like generic construction steel with low carbon which can be not proper choise for that type of application when you need sometimes to re ajust tension) it can lead to serious repair works. But I hope it would works nice.
@@SomeRandomPerson163
Even generic nuts/bolts with a grade number on top (grade 8.8, 10.9, 12.9) are typically excellent quality high tensile steel.
Construction steel is typically very good quality steel with medium to high carbon content and known strength and stiffness ratings.
You're probably referring to generic zinc-coated mild steel nuts and bolts which are super soft, deform quite easily and strip their threads with barely one extra turn!!
You tigged your own truss rod, impressive 👍.
Great video I'm glad this showed up in my feed as I'm prepping for my first build
Migged, but yeah pretty impressive!
@@formulajake1996 I should of known better being a tig welder lol,it was very quick though...
It had it's challenges, This has to be the tiniest thing I ever welded.. I had to clean the thread afterwards and it's not the prettiest thing but it works! :) I'm glad you like the video!
very complete equipment, all work so easy, amazing
Its always so satisfying to see the neck go from rough to smooth.
INSANE.... Beautiful. Thank you for filming and posting. Truly gifted artists. Inspiring.
I'm glad you like it Daniel! :)
You have to build Winter, Spring and Summer themed guitars next.
That's the plan! :D
Looking forward to them building those guitars:)
Lee Berry they have a winter bass now
The music behind is not good
This pure art and amazing craftsmanship! First time I saw someone making a handmade double action trustrod. Simply mind blowing!
Could not take my eyes off the screen. Fan-bloody-tastic!
Thank you! :)
I enjoy watching a mastercraftman work.
Not only an electric guitar but a piece of art.
Thank you Onur! 😀
That looked beautiful and sounded beautiful, too. I'd say that Lignum 001 is a real masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you for watching ! :D
This is so incredible that it just looks like he is showing off this unbelievable machine
I bet the background is being played with the most extraordinarily beautiful guitar made by you
Wow congratulations your guitar is AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!
Love it, the neck is no easy task, hell you even built your own truss rod, first class sir.
Thank you very much!😀
Che artigiani!!! Imparate mobilieri dell’ Ikea! Imparate da questi veri falegnami e liutai!!👑👑
Lovely expression from old man
Beautiful piece of work. Craftsmanship at its finest.
Beautiful guitar! If it plays and sounds as wonderful as it looks, you have a winner! Thank you for the video 😊. After finishing the video, I stand corrected. Great job! Thanks again 😊
That is THE coolest guitar I have seen yet
Love the bit oversized hornes. Great looker.
Super and very beautiful! Great Jobb!
when carts, crafts and engineering comes together. well done man.
Lindo, perfeito, muito bom! Boa tocabilidade!!
I am an apprentice of luthier and I am envious for the beauty that was achieved on that guitar, congratulations
Thank you Ivo very much!
Very cool...a stratpaul..awesome build.
While I was thoroughly impressed with making a truss rod from scratch, not every average Joe has $300,000.00 worth of shop tools at his command! Being a luthier myself I could tell whoever built it knew very well what they were doing. Well done!! Beautiful guitar!!
No words about... very impressive job, congratulations!!!!
Making your own truss rod is such a flex. Nice instrument! Loved the video.
Excellent instrument. I enjoyed watching the process.
Beautiful build ..love it man. The colors of wood are awesome..such a short sound clip...wish we heard more of it. I bet it plays and sounds great..really cool build...
What an incredible build! And kudos for not just copying a Fender or a Gibson
Apart from the bridge screw heads being too large, it looks amazing.
Yeah for some reasons the screws weren't included so these were closest ones I could find in the workshop.. Glad you like it! :D
building guitar with synthwave in the background? Instant like.
Just when I thought this channel simply couldn't get my attention any better with your uploads! In my years woodworking I have made more than 5 model guitars (guitars that don't play but just look cool) and I even went so far as to try my hand at building a guitar from a kit. I understand the unique sensation that comes along when you are about to do anything to the guitar for fear of messing it up. I personally think this guitar is awesome and would love to see the other 3 guitars made. That would be a set of true gems worthy of only the finest musical collections!
Thank you. Reading this really makes me want to try making all of them.. I already have a winter one in my head :D
@@lignumchannel can't wait to see what you come up with!
Beautifull and original intro, wow
And guitar is great. You really took your time building every small piece and detail, even the truss rod
1 of the most informative guitar making videos I've seen.
And not a word spoken 👍
Great detail on the truss rod..
Loved the leaf detail. Looking forward to the rest
Thank you very much! :)I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Wow! Definitely want to see the other seasons!
Thank you , I'm glad you do.😀 I'm thinking about a winter bass guitar..

was so happy to see and hear the end result. so many of these building guitar videos don't play it at the end. good job!
I’m a huge fan of the work u do. U inspire me to want to learn what u do, it would be amazing.
I was disappointed to see another guitar maker using a CNC machine, but when I saw you making the truss rod from scratch, I was actually quite impressed! Great video, thanks!
:D Thank you Johor9!
O final pra mim é a melhor parte do vídeo!
Muito linda
Over and over you blow my mind! Can't believe you fabricated the truss rod too. Such a sick build! (This is Mike from Modustrial Maker, btw, on my personal account)
Thank you Mike!:D I was really looking forward to hear your judgement about this one! I'm really glad you like it!
Yeah the homemade truss rod truly made my day!
(This is Gustav from Gustav & Hilda Holmström btw, not that anyone knows of our sleeping channel though 😅)
Dope! Your videos are always fun to watch and I just can't get over how talented and creative you are. Such an inspiration. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you like it Justin! And as always, thank you for watching! :D
Amazing building
beautiful project. i didn't expect so much hand cutting and measuring, i thought it would be all robot
I thought it would take me half the time it did but there are some thing robot just cant do.. I'm glad you like it Anton! :D
That was an amazing video and thank you for the in-depth demonstration on the process. I learned a great deal from this ,best BCK
Thank you Brian, I'm glad you like it!
You’re so good with that robot! And with your hands too! Great job! Always love videos!
Thank you Libo! :D
Beautiful guitar
Handmade might be more satisfying than CNC
I wanted to be certain it would turn out at lest decent for my first try at guitar making so I opted for that method. Next one will be hand made.
Looks so natural and simple.. awesome
A 15-minute vid? You're spoiling us.
😁yes, don't get used to it hehe..
@@lignumchannel Ooh please, spoil us, You are good at it...! :-))
So happy! This is beautiful!
Thank you!
Dear Sir,
This has got to be the best looking guitar I've seen in a very long time. I also liked the Parkside cordless drill which just demonstrate that if one has skill, it need not be very expensive to achieve superlative results. I am glad it was not built with extra ballast otherwise we would have been in for some heavy music!!!!. Talking of which your colleague played very well, but I still think Johnny Be Good by Chuck Berry might have been more appropriate. I'll be sure to show your clip to my 11 year old son who plays , from Classic Spanish, Classic Russian to Chuck berry ( his hero really). Very well done, Have a wonderful Christmas & a prosperous new Year 2020.
Dear Sir,
Honourable young son has finally seen your endeavours & does very much approves of your efforts. Very well done once again from him. Kind regards.
Yeah those parkside tools are perfect for jobs where they get beat up and you don't have to feel sorry for them.. Last time bosch drill fell from 5m height I almost cried.. As for the music, we had so many great songs at our disposal but the fear of copyright claim on the video after all that work just wasn't worth it.. I'm glad you like it and I also wish a great Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family :D
@@lignumchannel Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for your courteous reply. Indeed I can well imagine the potential issues with playing copyrighted music. Well done regardless. See you next year. Kind regards.
@@dilipbaumier1327 shut up already 🤣
@@destianpatrianagara1119 Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you very much for your most eloquent comment. Allow me to wish you a Merry Christmas followed by a gut bursting dinner extravaganza & then a very Happy New Year 2020 carefully quenched with a most potent brew that will anaesthetise your brain cells. Kind regards.
Ooookkk.
What was sweet?,
Truss rods, nice!
Robot c n c machines.
But what was crazy?
Dieing your own electronic boards!!
That's some " Brian may red special " shit right here.
Next level stuff.
Beautiful!
BEAUTIFUL GUITAR!!! I would've sprung for Locking Tuners....
Used a CNC to build the guitar and then fabricated a truss rod instead of buying one for $20 bucks....and THEN cut the fret slots by hand! LOL! Awesome job, guitar is beautiful. I would kill for a CNC to knock out my necks and bodies like that...
Always a frankly astonishing build from you, and this one is really pushing for the top spot. What an incredible build! Well done indeed! :D
It certainly is one of my favorite builds up until now..:D Thank you Matt!
Fantastic!! What a great job in the guitar! Congrats!!!!
Beautyfull works!
excellent work craftsmen... perfect, thanks VM for sharing... OK so ya'll are really good BUT freehand cutting of fret slots!...after the robot CNC... programming, oh and the perfect laminate layout, and truss rod fabrication.... the fret slots was the dagger.. jealous here just a wee bit... thanks very much
And here I thought my CNC guitar videos were cool. This video is cool.
Your videos are cool!
Exactly Haylee! Your videos are cool @Highline Guitars !
I really dig the headstock design. Its massive!
I'm glad you like it! :D
So this is what happens when a furniture - carpenter makes an instrument:
it becomes a sculpture!
Respect, Sir!
Thank you SH1974! :)
Wow this is awesome
badass machine you have! cool build.
Amazing robotics : beautiful result!
Looks great!
This is literally my project, par the body and scale length.
My custom is autumn themed, 30 inch baritone scale length, custom headstock and a modified warmoth Z body that I made myself after making a template.
I love the idea of seasonal guitars, wish people used nature to inspire guitar builds more.
I would love to see your version ! :)
@@lignumchannel The timelapse of the build will be up early next year. I'm a bit busy finishing my another build off currently. 👍😆
A trick for removing the tape from the fretboard easier after leveling and dressing is to put a length of tape down both sides of the neck and put the tape that covers the fretboard over that.
Once you're done you remove all the tape strips at once by just removing the lengths of tape down the side.
Great tip
Great video thanks for sharing 👍 I really enjoyed watching this.
Thank you Tom, I'm glad you like it!😀
Looking good
.
what an awesome build 👍
I WANT THIS GUITAR!!
Most excellent dude 👍
Hvala puno! Uvijek je lijepo pročitati domaći komentar! :D
All guitars should come equipped with pot leaves, looks killer!!
Very beautiful
Thank you Paul! :)
Love love love..... What a guitar....
Thank you Gyovanni! :D
Nice build.
awesome job.. i would take out the EMG and put any other humbucker.. just preferences.. other than that.. AWESOME.. PURE AWESOME..
Just awesome, one of a kind!
Muito bom eu gostei teu pra ver todo o processo
Incredible
Great job, very creative and skillful.
This is your best video
Great looking guitar. Although EMG pickups seem like an odd choice for something like this
One reason I like emg's is they are solderless and very easy to put in/take out/swap with other pickups
Just a thought tho
Oh! I thought the leaves were inlayed into the guitar. Nice first man, I can't wait to see how the other seasons go.
Thank you! I'm also excited about the next one!
As a furniture maker, i really love your works and projects. Especially your works and projects with your robots. You are doing very good works. To be honest, i am jelous of you 😀.
Thank you Emirhan! :) I always appreciate a positive comment from a fellow woodworker!
Good to see you back
I really enjoy this.
