With that combine common. Couldn’t you have just used the second sketch as a cut and flipped the side to cut to the outside? I’ve used combine common before to create some crazy ducting that I couldn’t picture what it would look like without it so I know it’s a great tool.
You can directly edit a part inside of the assembly. With that being said, I skipped all the other "tips" since this clearly shows your understanding of parametric modelling.

And if you really want to go nuts, assign the Shortcut Bar as a Mouse Gesture!

If you really want to streamline you design add the S Key the Short cut to mouse gestures. It does work I have tried it. No more typing the S key
