That chain trick for removing the ball joint is a brilliant idea!! The way these W-Body control arms are shaped, and with the location of the mounting rivets, it's a bear to try to get a pickle fork in there to pop the ball joint off. When I replaced the control arms on my buddy's Impala, I ended up just sawing off the old arms right after the ball joint to be able to get the pickle fork in there. Never occurred to me to try a chain and a pry bar!!! 💡
Great job. I had a mechanic do my daughter's Ford Focus bearings and got the car back with a torn cv shaft boot. They did not say anything, I discovered it a few months later when I went to change the oil. You are a real pro.
I must agree with Certified Shadetree, the chain method on the ball joint is a great idea. Tomorrow I'm replacing the cv shaft on my daughters 2013 equinox. I've never done one before and have worked on my own cars for 50 yrs. now. You make the process look easier then i thought it would be. Awesome video thank you a lot... I'll be watching for more, Keep the tips coming
Love the chain and pry bar trick. And the brass drift wack!! That’s two so far!! It seems like u added a lean too and another rack to your shop. Very nice!!
That's a very good video about how to replace the CV Axle Shaft and how to do it the right way. I don't have air lift so I had to use jack stands to careful lift car but while jack is support the jack stand at same time. Im still learning how to replace auto parts on Chevy malibu and impala. I already know more about Ford F150 but yet, want to learn and watch the UA-cam about chevy parts. If I can't do it , I usually take car to shop and have the tech do the job. Overall good video.
If you’re good with working on Fords, repairing Chevys will be a breeze for you. I don’t care for Fords much because it seems they over complicate things. But good for you! Keep working at it!
my 03 3400 cv axel doesnt have a place on the shaft for the c clip im worried the one i im planning on removing does have one .wish me luck, great video
Clean work. My impala starts vibrating and grinding on acceleration sometimes, as if something is slipping. Does this happen when the axle assembly goes bad or is it something else?
Well a bad CV joint can cause a vibration under load but as previously stated, I'd check the engine mounts first. When the rubber wears out there is metal to metal contact. That gives the sensation of grinding when accelerating.

Thanks! I’ve been using the chain technique for as long as I’ve been working on vehicles. Works pretty well.
HA , yeah great idea

Thanks! Sorry to hear about the CV boot!

This shop has 3 bays, two lifts and a flat. My old shop just had that single lift in the middle. Kind of a waste of space. This setup is much better.
I love the lower pinch ball joint removal technique so the alignment isn't messed with.

Have you ever seen the clip on the inside joint fly off?
No, thankfully.

Could be your engine mounts

When I turn right I get a shaking wobble sensation does that mean I need to replace passenger cv joint? Is the inner cv joint bad?
