Classic example of network execs ruining a great project. Went from being a sharply written show to a child pandering mess. Those early seasons were brilliant.
It was the #1 show, & that just wasn't good enough for them. This show was such a prime example of why "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" should be taken seriously by Hollywood. I absolutely HATED what they did to Janine. She just got worse & worse.
The saddest day in my life is when the air pressure stomp pad failed and was no longer effective in opening the ghost trap. I had that and the plastic proton pack and remember being a ghostbuster for like 5 years consecutively. I hand the jumper too. I wished that being a ghostbuster was a real job. Bed sheet with sleeping bag was sweet
Okay, so big question: were you yourself as a GB or one of the four and then, who? TBH Sometimes we were just us, but on my Ghostbusters ID card that came with the set I wrote (so poorly) Egon and my brother was Ray.
I had the ghost trapper and proton pack too! As well as the action figures and the car! I didn't get the bed sheets though because my mom got me a set of legend of zelda/super mario bros ones. I still have that comforter to this day, lost the sheets and pillow cases at some point though lol
Huh. Kinda funny that the guy who voiced the cartoon Garfield voiced Venkman in the show, and Bill Murray went onto voice Garfield in those crappy movies.
The first 70 something episodes, was one of the best shows ever made. When it changed, by force because of the Network, to "Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters", it still had a few good stories, but it went downhill. It was the brilliant execs' idea that they should base it more around Slimer cuz "kids love him", and to tone down the complex and dark/scary stories. Bad moves on both counts.
The sand man and the castle of kill Darby were my favorite. So was this one episode with all the list toys that game to life. Can't remember but your right. After the first few seasons, it went downhill
I got the Time Life complete set DVD’s back in 2008, and the “Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters” have yet to be opened. The plastic still remains untouched smh...
It hurts that so many dislike 'Extreme'. While the inclusitivity adjustment to the team WAS extreme, the writing and tone was a true sequel to those original 2 seasons. Some awesome ghost designs too
Should have mentioned Tahiti. One of the standout things about the first season was they hired a band to write pop songs they could insert into episodes, so the show's soundtrack mimicked the mix of orchestral incidental music and pop songs that was the hallmark of the films.
Actually, the blue pole inside the GB Headquarters was lined with a spiral, which made the circular platform spin to the bottom. The peg on the platform disc fit into your Ghostbusters' boot, so they stayed on and "slid" down the pole. Nerd cred.
I loved the IDW Ghostbusters comics and how they did a 4 issues that had the real Ghostbusters meet the 1984 movie Ghostbusters. That was a awesome crossover.
I read that the lines for Winston in the first movie were originally for Eddie Murphy and most of it was ad libbed due to him being on Saturday Night Live and something about Bill Murray working off him. When Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters started, it was an hour block, YES! You would spray them with cold water and the slime would appear on their uniforms and faces. There are also the IDW comics with The Real Ghostbusters Tie-ins such as Ghostbusters: Get Real and the 35th anniversary One Shot.
The first 2 seasons were definitely the best in terms of stories & tone. I recently bought a few sets of the Time Life DVD's & some of those early episodes have some gnarly images that I remember being scared by. I hated when the show was changed to SLIMER (and the real ghostbusters)
I tip my hat to you for mentioning how the consulting firm Q5 dumbed down the show and turn it into the Slimer show. UA-camr Phelous goes into more detail about it.
I love this show (still), and think the True Life DVD boxset is the ultimate collection. From the Sandman to the Werechicken, I thoroughly enjoyed both the writing and art. The only time that I've seen character design come close to this level was the 2012 TMNT show. I think that it's great how the IDW comic includes everything Ghostbusters (even the Filmation one) into one canon. Personally, I'm a fan of bothe original casts, and the recastings. How can you not love Kath Sucie's voice?
It's important to consider how Slimer was an unnamed monster who had just gotten a name for the RGB's Slimer getting better respected (and more articulate) was a gradual process as the character got more popular.
I watched the sandman episode again and his choice took me back to when I got spooked as a none year old hearing it all over again. One of the best episodes.... So was the one about the kill Darby castle. Classics.
Yeah I like all the seasons too and I don't mind the recastings either or Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters episodes. The soundtrack is what definately makes the show though!
Unfortunately, it was the answer to critics and Congress wanting Saturday morning cartoons to be more "educational" and Kid-Friendly. It was the beginning of the end for RGB and other cartoons of the era.
In the beginning when she was talking about the Ecto coolers Hi-C Slimer drink I'm was thinking to myself that's not the original because the original has Slimer on the box. 😄😅 I'm old 😂
It’s amazing that SYFY does a video about The Real Ghostbusters, yet doesn’t air the show! Hmmm.... Overall, not bad but definitely missed some important points such as why they replaced Lorenzo Music with Coullier (which Music was a WAY better Venkman). Better luck next time.
Ironic Fact: Bill didn't like that his character sounded like Garfield and then in 2004, he voiced him for two of the live action movies of Garfield 😂😂😂
Allyah Howard He was just playing, but it was more about a writer. However, Music should've come back. I won't say anything more about Hall and Summer.
Great review! And Wow, you had so many of the toys! I had heard that Lorenzo got replaced by Dave Coulier (sp?) because the producers loved his Bill Murray Impression on Full House... I have always felt that was the downfall of the series. The Ernie Hudson thing is BRUTAL though. Also of note, the Ghostbusters defeat Cthulhu in the episode 'Collect call of Cthulhu'.
did you know that james avery aka uncle phil was also not just the voice for The shredder on TMNT and also was the voice of Kilerwatt in a episode of RGB... and he provided voice for other charcters in different episodes.
This show was my very first exposure to Ghostbusters. Not only is it still my favorite kids cartoon of all time but the feature films Ghostbusters 1 & 2 are together, my favorite movies of all time.
Thanks for posting this great behind the scenes look at my #1 all-time favorite animated series! I remember being completely freaked out by the talking doomsday door in 'Knock Knock'! Hey, at 7 years old, this series was badass and creepy at the same time! 🌎🇵🇷😉
@@Teleios116 Which is noting compared to The Simpsons, but those shows are outliers. In general, 7 years is a very long run for an animated show, especially in the days before widespread basic cable
As a qualified Ghostbusters and RGB mega-fan (I helped co-found the costume group the Atlanta Ghostbusters) I have to give you kudos on this. You covered everything and more that most anyone would want to know about RGB, not just the same handful of well-worn facts we've been used to hearing for the last 30-odd years. Great job!
It really is amazing how well the mannerisms were captured in the cartoon. We all know Frank Welker sounds nothing like Dan Akroyd, but when you hear both in the role, the portrayals start to blend together.
Nice to see a reviewer likes Slimer. Poor Ernie Hudson, but at least he got to guest-star in "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." Also, I wanted the praying mantis Volkswagen as a kid.
A few things not mentioned in the video. 1 The early seasons were animated in Japan, the studios used were some of the same studios used for Japanimation-- one being Toei Animation-- that also animated Japanese shows Hokuto No Ken, Dragon Ball, and other American shows like GI Joe, Transformers, Jem, and the first X-Men show from 1989. 2 Eddie Murphy had originally been the first choice for Winston in the movie, with John Belushi as Venkman. Both Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy were in "Coming to America". 3. Slimer was first named "Slimer" on the show, before that he was known as "Onion Head Ghost" or "Green Ghost". 4 In the pilot Real Ghostbusters promo, the Ghostbusters wore the movie jumpsuits, and their proton packs were more similar to the movie in color. Venkman looked more like Bill Murray, and Slimer resembled the character more from the movie in personality and appearance. 5 The character of Green Ghost/Slimer, was based on John Belushi's character Bluto. 6 The Real Ghostbusters first gave the "Proton Packs" their name. 7 After Lorenzo Music and Arsenio Hall were replaced by Coulier and Jones, the earlier episodes were then re-dubbed, with Coulier and Jones replacing Music and Hall's voices in many re-runs. 8 Real Ghostbusters was based on the movie, but RGB later also influenced the second movie. Ghostbusters 2 was the first live-action GB movie, to use the names "Slimer" and "Proton Pack", from the cartoon. Janine and Slimer were also made to look more like their cartoon version. 9 RGB was toned down with "Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters", because it was considered too dark or scary for children. 10. ECTO-1A and Slime Blower are two items only appearing in a GB movie, that was released in the Kenner Real Ghostbusters toyline.
I loved this show, and have the DVD set. One of the best movie-to-tv adaptations ever done (at least until the stupid reboot). Egon and Janine forever!
Until watching this I had forgotten I made a proton pack out of a shoebox with a particle thrower out of a paper towel tube. Aaahh... 1984, where have you gone.
I loved The Real Ghostbusters and Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters, and the sequel Extreme Ghostbusters. When Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters started, it was an hour block, YES! It aired in a one-hour time slot, which the show began doing under its original name earlier that same year on January 30, 1988. But It was divided into two 15 minute long Slimer! slots and one 30 minute slot for a The Real Ghostbusters episode in the middle of them. The show also received a new opening sequence (which was used for the remainder of the series) with the same theme song when it was re-titled as well. In season 5, it had more changes to the show with Ghostbusters II in theaters that summer. The cartoon was re-tuned to fit with the movie. The most noticeable change was the addition of Louis Tully. The "Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters format was divided into a 15 minute Real Ghostbusters, 30 minute Real Ghostbusters, and then 1 15 minute Slimer's universe episode. During season 6, The Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters format was 2 22 min. long The Real Ghostbusters episodes, though after the first few weeks, one of them was usually a rerun from a prior season. But the intro and show title still remained "Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters." The intro music was updated to the new hard rock style version of Ray Parker, Jr. music. Season 7 was the final season and had only 4 episodes. The Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters format was just 1 episode of The Real Ghostbusters. Most reruns were from 1989 (season 5) and 1990 (season 6) full-length episodes. However, like seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7, the title of the show and intro was still "Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters".
Ghostbusters was a great cartoon, I really appreciate the detail of knowledge that you put into this video. Only problem is that with the Slime information was that Masters of the Universe came out with the Slime Pit from Mattel in 1985, before the Ghostbusters release from Kenner!!! Still I must say that I learned a lot more about the cartoon and what took place with it. Thanks for the info!!!
Impressive. Y'all even have a couple that ultimately eluded my childhood collection. Alas, even though the trap unit was shown early on, I was hoping to see the proton pack, PKE meter, or any of the toy gadgetry. Still, this gave me miles and miles of smiles.
IMO I always considered TRG to be part of the same universe as the movies, Citizen Ghost episode being the main connection. GB2 was pretty much based on the cartoons in a way and even Slimer in GB2 appeared to have been the good ghost and living with them despite the little cameos he had. Extreme Ghostbusters is the sequel series so that would also make it in the same universe. However I feel like the GB3 movie at this point is going to make or break on whether the cartoon series is part of the same universe or not and that will depend on references and the Slimer situation.
ok in the movie- they blew up the state puff . they never captioned him cause he wasnt a ghost. the cartoon never explained that part well. they just had him caught as a ghost. anyone can explain?
I don't think that was ever explained. It's strange though because in the episode Citizen Ghost which takes place after the first movie, they're covered in parts of Stay Puft when he exploded so even the show itself is contradicting the Stay Puft situation.
Every kid had the fright features figs, myself included. I wanted more than anything to have the four original figures as they looked like the characters on the show and had proton packs instead of weak gimmicks. Sadly, I could only muster a proton packless Ray through trades. *sigh*
This was my absolute favorite movie and cartoon back in the 80s. Still my favorite movie of all time! The boogyman episode stands out and also the episode where they go to the alternate ghost universe where the monster catch humans in Boo York City
The show also received a new opening sequence (which was used for the remainder of the series) with the same theme song when it was re-titled as well. Slimer is shown to haunt the Sedgewick Hotel as its recurring pest. The segments added several characters as friends of Slimer and other supporting characters like Fred the Dog, Bud, a bellboy from the Sedgewick Hotel where Slimer was busted in the movie; Junior Ghostbusters Donald, Catherine, and Jason; Chilly Cooper, an ice cream truck driver, and Luigi the Italian chef - as well as his enemies -- a scruffy cat named Manx, Bruiser, a neighborhood dog that bullies him, Morris Grout, the grumpy manager of the Sedgewick Hotel, a tough woman named Mrs. Stone, socialite Mrs. Van Huego and her dog Fred, odd-job worker Rudy, and the ghost gangsters Goolem and Zugg as well as their boss Scareface. and a obsessive scientist named Doctor Norman Dweeb, an imcompetant mad scientist with a poodle named Elizabeth. Dweeb's life goal was to capture Slimer and experiment who purses him. Professor Dweeb also appeared on the comics and later added to the normal Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters, where he looks down upon the team's paramormal research and declares his "ghost busting" superior; although his appearance remained overtly cartoony, inexplicably leaving him with only 3 fingers. The theme song of the cartoon was a very good cover version of the Ray Parker Jr song, performed by John Smith, and later Thomas Chase and Steve Rucker.
The reason Dave Coulier replaced Lorenzo Music was because the producers wanted someone who sounded more like Bill Murray, which is crazy to think about considering that Murray took over as Garfield in the live action films due to Music's passing. The show had it right from the start, but it was another thing the producers botched up when going into the third season.
Lorenzo Music voiced the animated version of Bill Murray's most famous live-action role. Bill Murray later went on to voice the live-action version of Lorenzo Music's most famous animated role (Garfield.)
The pole in the toy firehouse had a platform on it that you fixed your action figure to, the platform then spun down the pole which has a spiral on it.
I like all the seasons and I never did mind the Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters episodes either, they were just as good IMO. I liked the intro better too. The series is and will be the best animated series of all time! True TRG fans will agree!
Actually, BOTH of those reasons with the change of the characters likenesses are right. But the "legal hangups" with using their likenesses was why they changed them. This is confirmed by one of the original concept artists.
I think I was a bit too young to watch the movie when it 1st came out or recall it, but I remember loving the cartoon as a kid. Altering the characters likenesses for legal reason makes more sense, because they were already distinguishable from each other (Winston's black, Egon wears glasses, & Ray's chubby). The TMNT just wore different colors (like the GB's new uniforms) & had signature weapons. But I liked all the changes from the movie, until the 2nd network changes.
hey heres an interestin twist, in the real ghostbusters cartoon, the character of bill Murry was voice by garfeild and the voice of garfeild was later voiced by bill murry in the later cg Garfield movies!
The syndicated series (First 65 episodes) were awesome. A lot of cool references and stories that stayed close to the movie source material. Only when it went to ABC did it get toned down.
Anyone who knows cartoon design knows that you want each character to have it's own unique silhouette. This explains the different body sizes, shapes, and hair styles when the characters were adapted to animation. If you have any doubt of this theory just google image search "cartoon silhouette"
They did Ernie Hudson dirty! I bet real money they used Ernie as a hedge until the realized they could get away the unknown (and certainly cheaper) Arsenio Hall. It's always 'business' isn't it?
One tidbit that I'm surprised is missing: The criss-cross between Akroyd and Music. You mention that Lorenzo Music (who played Akroy'd part) was the voice of Garfield, but it's gotta be worth mentioning that when they did a live-action Garfield, Akroyd played Lorenzo Music's part. CRISS-CROSS!
Ben Hallert You better give your comment a quick review/edit before a hundred 80's nerds jump on you. I'll scrub this reply after you see what i mean.. 😜
I love this show. Loved it as a kid. Still love it now. Slimer is great but not underappreciated. In fact they over utilized him in the second half of the show.
Classic example of network execs ruining a great project. Went from being a sharply written show to a child pandering mess. Those early seasons were brilliant.
J'son Cox Excs and woke people ruin everything
It was the #1 show, & that just wasn't good enough for them.

They should have checked with the children, like me, who loved the series before trying to change it. I liked the way it was.
The boogeyman design had an effect on me..and the background mystery music really added that ghostly feels..i love that show!
Me as well.
But that episode helped a lot.
Dealing with nightmares at childhood, no walk in the park.
@@k.delpino1124 im glad it did good for you..
Boogeyman low key scared me as a child!
Boogeyman was such ironic nightmare fuel!
The Boogeyman really creeped me out! I was a young adult when the show aired, and I can remember at least one nightmare about the character!
Love The Real Ghostbusters but hated how Slimer became the main character!
TheOriginalMaxGForce I hear you Jack Napier!
Real Cyphox I didn’t like that, even as a kid lol
The changes was made when a evil bad cartoon company took over
And when Dave coulier replaced Lorenzo music
The Ghostbusters cartoon had an episode called “Collect call of Cthulhu”.

The IDW Comics are pretty much if you made the real ghostbusters with the film variation of these characters.
They are kinda like if Bruce Timm did Ghostbusters:the animated series. I love the RGB as a kid and I still love it .
I am glad someone recognizes the IDW comics. It is heads down the best way we will see the franchise continued.
I have over 100 issues from the IDW Ghostbusters comic run. And I can't get enough of it.
Dont forget the crossover with Ghostbusters and TMNT!

The Real Ghostbusters weren't the only series Q5 ruined. They also ruined the 80s Pound Puppies as well
It went all down hill after they swapped Peter's and Janine's voices.
It started sucking when the executives wanted to market it to toddlers by focusing on Slimer. Before that it was for older kids.
They swapped Peter's voice because Bill Murray didn't like being voiced by the same guy who played Garfield......Even though decades later he'd play the live action of the same fat cat who hates Mondays and loves lasagna 😂😂😂

The soundtrack is what definately makes the show though!
slimer ruined the show when they gave him top billing
Why u say that?
They pretty much canceled the main show in favor of a bugs bunny style slimmer series without announcing they did.
Unfortunately, it was the answer to critics and Congress wanting Saturday morning cartoons to be more "educational" and Kid-Friendly. It was the beginning of the end for RGB and other cartoons of the era.
@@Nabinut well you agree with me in that we didnt watch cartoons to learn a thing but to have fun watching .. right
Yep. That's when I moved on. I loved that show
In the beginning when she was talking about the Ecto coolers Hi-C Slimer drink I'm was thinking to myself that's not the original because the original has Slimer on the box. 😄😅 I'm old 😂
The smell of the original Ectoplasm toys is cemented in my mind for all eternity.
We love you Ernie. This was a great episode. SO much information but very entertaining.
Great video. One thing you did miss was John Tobias penciled a few of the NOW Comics RGB issues. John Tobias is the co-creator of Mortal Kombat.
It’s amazing that SYFY does a video about The Real Ghostbusters, yet doesn’t air the show! Hmmm....
Overall, not bad but definitely missed some important points such as why they replaced Lorenzo Music with Coullier (which Music was a WAY better Venkman). Better luck next time.
bigevilworldwide1 Actually knew that but the video didn’t. That was part of the extras on the set. Just thought they got some things wrong.
bigevilworldwide1 and didn’t dave ironically end up doing Garfield’s voice later on?
Captain Chaz 86 Not Dave, Bill. As in, Bill Murray. The producers wanted an actor to sound more like the latter.
Fun spooky fact: Dave Coulier and Bill Murray share the same birthday
The fire pole had a platform with footings for the feet that would let them spin around the pole as they went down. They didn't just fall down.
Videos like this makes UA-cam so frickin awesome.
can you do the EXtreme Ghostbuster?
@Scott Whatever i thought it was ok.
89Animeknight2nd I liked it a lot as well. Hope they do the vid on it.
@@paulmarchano7238 couldn't agree more! It really carried the torch at the end of the 90's
I think for the 35th Ghostbusters anniversary it would be hilarious to see them in Super Smash Bros
did you know that james avery aka uncle phil was also not just the voice for The shredder on TMNT and also was the voice of Kilerwatt in a episode of RGB... and he provided voice for other charcters in different episodes.
I Always Love The Real Ghostbusters,
Same here
Indeed..
Seven seasons is an insanely long run for an animated kids show.
Try spongebob
@@Teleios116 Which is noting compared to The Simpsons, but those shows are outliers. In general, 7 years is a very long run for an animated show, especially in the days before widespread basic cable
As a qualified Ghostbusters and RGB mega-fan (I helped co-found the costume group the Atlanta Ghostbusters) I have to give you kudos on this. You covered everything and more that most anyone would want to know about RGB, not just the same handful of well-worn facts we've been used to hearing for the last 30-odd years. Great job!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It's good to see I'm not alone in remembering this great show!
It really is amazing how well the mannerisms were captured in the cartoon. We all know Frank Welker sounds nothing like Dan Akroyd, but when you hear both in the role, the portrayals start to blend together.
Paying a small fortune for the out-of-print Time-Life set of the complete series...PRICELESS!
Amazing video of the real ghostbusters fantastic job too
Nice to see a reviewer likes Slimer. Poor Ernie Hudson, but at least he got to guest-star in "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." Also, I wanted the praying mantis Volkswagen as a kid.
Found a secret warp zone while workin on drain!!!!!!
Loved this cartoon as a kid! Probably the best cartoon base on a movie ever! The storylines and humor was top notch!
No real surprise on Brad Garett he has a huge voice acting career
The real ghost busters and TMNT were my childhood
Who exactly didn't consider the later changes to the show a mistake?!
Excelent video, love the background music! suscribed!
This show is so great
(Not including the Slimer bits)
20:58 "OK!" ... priceless!
Didn't learn anything new but really enjoyed the video
And a 90 ghostbusters cartoon reboot or sequel depending on how you feel
I faithfully watched both cartoons from the day they both premiered!
The music for this series was fantastic.
The host is incredible. So much enthusiasm
Introduced my nephew to Ghostbusters. I had kept most if not all my toys. He plays with them everyday.
I got so excited when I saw the two the real Ghostbusters episodes involving Cthulhu and Al Capone.
I had the Ecto-2 helicopter and fright feature version of Egon toys back in the day...good times!
I loved The Real Ghostbusters as a kid. I constantly pretended to be a Ghostbuster. My first cassette tape was of The Ghostbusters movie soundtrack.
ok in the movie- they blew up the state puff . they never captioned him cause he wasnt a ghost. the cartoon never explained that part well. they just had him caught as a ghost. anyone can explain?
I don't think that was ever explained. It's strange though because in the episode Citizen Ghost which takes place after the first movie, they're covered in parts of Stay Puft when he exploded so even the show itself is contradicting the Stay Puft situation.
Every kid had the fright features figs, myself included. I wanted more than anything to have the four original figures as they looked like the characters on the show and had proton packs instead of weak gimmicks. Sadly, I could only muster a proton packless Ray through trades. *sigh*
I didn't get a normal Ray figure till 2013.
Great video! I had a Ghost Buster fire house when I was a kid but it was a different model and it had a pole!
This was my favorite cartoon growing up! I loved it! Still do
This was my absolute favorite movie and cartoon back in the 80s. Still my favorite movie of all time! The boogyman episode stands out and also the episode where they go to the alternate ghost universe where the monster catch humans in Boo York City

In season 5, it had more changes to the show with Ghostbusters II in theaters that summer. The cartoon was re-tuned to fit with the movie. The most noticeable change was the addition of Louis Tully. Take two also had a voice cameo by Ray Stantz himself, Dan Aykroyd.
Bill Murray bitched like a baby that Peter sounded too much like Garfield and wanted it changed, not the producers.
I loved this show. I was able to watch 2 episode on UA-cam before something happened. I wonder it Amazon has these on DVD.
The incidental music on this show was aces.
Jackie is the best! Also, still love the Real Ghostbusters and the coverage.
Lorenzo Music voiced the animated version of Bill Murray's most famous live-action role. Bill Murray later went on to voice the live-action version of Lorenzo Music's most famous animated role (Garfield.)
Draknfyre It would've been nice if Music came back after the third city.
Does anyone else remember the episode that had messed up version of The Simpsons moving into the firehouse ?
This video hit me right in the Nostalgia....so many feels, so many times a young me went around busting Ghost in the house.
I love this show. Loved it as a kid. Still love it now.
Slimer is great but not underappreciated. In fact they over utilized him in the second half of the show.
Yeah the first two seasons of it still hold up wonderfully to this day.
Your cos play is on point
Jackie is a wonderful and hilarious host. Brilliant.
