Rustic Wood and Aged Metal Gate

- I needed a gate to lock my chickens up when they're not free ranging, so I decided to go with a rustic / distressed metal and wood theme to go along with the surrounding old metal and wood look.

Badass gate! Nice work!
Thanks Jeff!
Love the gate - simple design but attractive and will last. Thanks for sharing. I’m off to build something similar.
Thank you Phil!
You are one great handyman great job brother God bless.
Thank you +larry navarro !
Thanks for sharing and making it look so easy. I’ve built wooden gates my whole life and I just started incorporating metal into my woodworking shop. Your super easy to follow and watch. Just subscribed!!
Thank you! I think you’ll love adding some metal in with the wood, I know I sure do!
Nice job!
+Scott Turner Thanks, always nice to hear!
man, that looks great!!!
Nice and clean looking gate.
+Nitsuga Alliceva Very kind of you. Thank you!
Great job man! Real clean job!
Good gate!!! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Excelente serviço.
Awesome.
The gate looks BEA-UTIFUL!!!
Thank you!
People who don’t understand what fabricating for major clients requires “love this video” because of the artistic components which makes sense- and don’t see the CRITICAL flaw early on that in this case didn’t really matter, but it sends a horrible message to young or inexperienced welders/builders that could absolutely cause a major problem if you were building with HSS (it’s not called “square tube” btw...it’s called Hollow Structural Section) larger than the 2” in this video. YOU MUST ALWAYS MEASURE THE CORNER TO CORNER DISTANCE TO CHECK FOR SQUARE BEFORE WELDING THE FLAT SIDES OF THE FRAME. AT NO TIME SHOULD ANY PART OF THE FRAME BE MOVED FRON THE MECHANICAL ATTACHMENT UNTIL ALL SIDES ARE VERIFIED AND TACKED ON THE 3F and 1F POSITIONS. I have seen THOUSANDS of dollars in material and labor cut apart after a week of welding and fabricating because this simple step was not verified, and caused a deviating of 1/16 of an inch that rejected the part for a major household goods company in Cincinatti, Ohio. This isn’t hating on his video for those who might claim as such- it’s actually highlighting why it’s important for the experienced and skilled to police these forums and give praise where it is proper and revision where required. Nice gate.
flippin awesome job bro.
Thanks Growingwiser
Good job! 👍
Thank you! +Clemilsonccs
Great video! It turned out really nice!
+SeabassVision Thank you!
Congratulations. Very good.
Thanks!
Nice job man.
+Troy Hoggard Thank you very much.
Just come across the video, very impressive gates, that looks quite easy make! Hopefully any way. 😁👍
Chickens were giving you the stink eye at the end as you were walking out. Nice looking fence.
Thanks Dan.
Haha, yes they were... They want FREEDOOOOM!!
Great work looks good
Thanks 👍
Nice work
Thank you.
I always marvel at guys who can cut accurate 45 degree angles free hand..
Thanks! I’m definitely not the greatest though...
Good job 👍
Thank you.
simple and nice
Thank you!
good job..👍
Thank you
very nice
Thank you
Two questions: why the 45 angle on the corners, is that for stability or aesthetics? Also what size are the screws holding the wood to the panels, They look like 1/2 inch panels and wondering if a 1/2 screw will hold it together. But it all looks awesome.
45’s are for aesthetics. Screws were 5/8” I believe and they’ve been holding up well so far. Thanks!
At least the Lady is still presenting herself in an attractive manner.
Thanks, I’ll let her know
Very nice. If I only had the tools...
Start slowly acquiring tools..
Very nice job. Well planned out. Looks like you have all the good tools. I especially appreciate you listing the tools and accessories.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I’ve got a lot of the tools but not the set up to really streamline the process.
Best video 🔥🔥🔥. Make more
Thank you Jesse!
very professional! Thank YOU! LIKE! LIKE LIKE!
Thanks!
No hay nada mejor que poseer absolutamente todas las herramientas adecuadas!
Thank you!
Great video. What do you all use to prevent a steel gate from rusting? I was thinking of powder coating mine after I weld it up. Any better suggestions?
Powder coat or plan on painting periodically. I don’t mind the rust though for that gate.
that's exactly what I need only I'm making it 92 inches tall with a crossbeam for added support. my only question is I don't have concrete slab, I was wondering if I could set post on ground with concrete mix. or should I set a it attached to a footing?
+Gilbert Matty It should be fine if you set the post nice and deep. Are you going to add a wheel on the long side?
Love the video and gate! Question...how wide was your opening and how wide was your gate you built? I'm building one soon and would like to know the space you left on the ends for the hinges.
Thank you! The gate was 9 feet wide total. 1/4” gap between and about 2” on each side.
Good job dear
Thank you
Good Work
Thank you
as youre welcome....
Nice gate. Can I use an angle grinder to cut the thin strips of metal
great work. love the detailed view, and your attention to detail. Im looking to replace my old broken wooden 11' gate, in phoenix, az, usa. Any chance you got time for me?
Thank you! I wish I could but I have zero time available right now...
Love it!! That's one badass gate for chicken! hahahaaha!
+gradeez Thanks! Maybe just a little overkill... haha!
I'm trying to replace the wood on a driveway gate that's made just like this. What kind of wood did you use or would you recommend that I buy? I've never really worked with fencing like this so I'd appreciate any tips on what I should be asking for at the lumber yard. I'm going to have to get it cut there too. Great job with this video, thanks.
I used cedar planks. Holds up well to weather and bugs. Redwood should be good too.
wow tenkiu eees grande
Nice effort man. You should have welded a square tube mid rail to help brace it. As you hadn't, you would have been better installing the wood with the gates on your table, that would have helped with sag as the wood would help brace it. Also, don't fully weld a corner without tacking the whole frame together, otherwise you'll struggle to keep the gate square. Nice tools too
Thanks for the tips +Benjamin Button!
Great work! What kind of wood sealer did you use?
Thank you! It was Thompson’s wood sealer. Still holding up well.
Excellent. How did you attach the wooden timbers? I can see they are being held but I’m not totally clear how!
Just with screws.
A Modern Maker haha thanks. A 9 month wait but worth it :-)
Sorry about that 😬
Luar biasa 👏👏 i like
Thank you!
FELICIDADES MUY BONITO, MI TRABAJO ES DE OTRO TIPO, PERO TAMBIEN ME GUSTA TRABAJAR EN MI CASA Y TRATO DE HACER COSAS, Y AHORA ESTOY TRABAJANDO EN UN PORTON COMO EL DE UD.
Gracias. Buena suerte!
Cuánto salio todo
Whats your welder wire feed and voltage set at?
What size metal pieces did you use?
What sizes for metal did you use?
Nice... did you used a stainless tubular or galvanised one? and also the flat bar?
Just painted mild steel
where do you get these large metal fence posts
+Abu Kareem At a metal supply yard/retailer, or you can buy them online.
Beautiful gates! Now all you have to do is knock down the entire fence and do it to that. Easy peasy.
Thank you!
4:36 - Put her in the thumbnail and you'll triple your views! That was a nice build too. Loved your plasma "drill".
Haha she loved that! +Nathan Johansen Thanks!
Hai xuân hình than thanh hiện
una bella ragazza :)
+Gregory Cecchin Thanks!
Really gorgeous! Sexy legs btw!
What is the size and kind of wood you used for the frame?
Tanks my brother
Standard fence pickets. 5/8” thick, ripped to appropriate width and cut to height.
Vinegar and wool will give you that stain,I'm comfused?
I noticed that you have a plasma cutter (I want to get one soon too). Why do you not use it to cut your angles instead of the bandsaw? Are the cuts too sloppy with a plasma cutter? Awesome build btw!!!
Thank you! I used square tubing which is faster to cut with a bandsaw. With a plasma cutter I’d have to cut all 4 sides.
Hi, what type of wood and thickness did you use?
Thnx
Cedar planks, about 5/8" thick
What size tubing did you use for the frame?
1.5” I believe
Great job! I love how you edit your videos! Diresta inspired?
Thank you +VivaLaCody1! Yes, Diresta inspired.
Also i m a wood worker who would love to learn more welding, I have very limited metal work. I would have made costume tongue and groove floating panels...
I'm sure that would look great, but would be way more work than I wanted to put into a gate for chickens.
Fantastic work! Are you going to do more videos like this soon?
+Best Access Doors Thank you! Hopefully in the near future!
What size of metal did you use.
Can a beginner do this if I learn how to weld?
What is the size and kind of metal you used for the frame?
1-1/2” mild steel tubing
I can smell the welding lol
all that effort for chickens
Haha. It was actually practice for making a new front gate.
What "Patina Stain" did you use? I like the way it turned out. Great job!
+Randy Davis Thanks Randy! It's called Black Magic by Sculpt Nouveau.
Will have to give that a try!
+Randy Davis If you have any question, let me know!
Randy Davis
What type of wood did u used?
What size RHS was used to frame the gate?
1.5"
What size wire did u used?
What machine is that?
Gas? Ect...?
Thanks man
+X2DaA 503 I think it was .035, Lincoln 210 MP, CO2/Argon gas mix.
size: 128375638359322090.2
machine: *%$@
Gas: Gross - Grow up man.
That turned out great, nice job... now for the chicken wire fence next to it?
Thanks! Yeah... That is very low on the priority list but it does need to get done! Hopefully soon.
I know what you mean. I'm always 10 tasks behind.
Same here +Jack Of All And I've got a wedding coming up in a couple weeks and still have a ton of stuff to build for it!
goood✌👌👏💖
+Ali Afreet thanks!
what type of wood is this?
Nice job my friend, I wanted to ask about the black patina for metal, is your formula or commercial sale? Thank you very much.-
Thank you +Germán It's a commercial product. Black Magic by Sculpt Nouveau.
Thanks for the quick response, respect from Argentina!
+Germán Anytime. Awesome!
No fence just gate 😂
Hi bro I m from india and I want to built this type gate.will it be safe in rainy season and wt camical can we use to protect from sun light and rain.
Hey. Yeah just make sure you have a good clear coat on the metal and some sort of water seal on the wood.
Great build! how much gap did you leave between the wood? stay awesome
+MusikaHouse Thank you! About 3/16"
+MusikaHouse Possibly 1/8" can't remember...
What side of tubing u are using???
1.5” I believe
Very nicely done. Can you give an estimate of material costs? I’m trying to decide if it’s less expensive to build than to buy. Thank you.
Definitely less to build than to buy. My guess is it cost around $100 to build.
A Modern Maker awesome. Thank you.
No problem. I have another video where I build a wrought iron (steel) gate. Materials were $650 and quotes he got from gate fabricators ranged from $3000-4,000.
Do u have a manual hand crank bender (three wheel)?
+keith henry Not yet, but I'm planning on building one. Still working out the design in my head.
Are those speed square really accurate? ?
+keith henry They're accurate enough for me along with measuring diagonals, etc.
Can you please tell diameters for square bars..thanks
Hey What is the steel size and thickness?
It's called HSS or RSS correct? I'm wanting to use your dea and build to 7ft panels for my driveway gate.
Any suggestions? ......
I can’t remember. Either 2x2 or 1.5x1.5. Thickness was .120” I believe. But for fence you could go thinner walled. And it’s just mild steel.
@@AModernMaker I see. I'm thinking about using the method to build a 14ft car-gate.
(2) 7'x5' panels and attaching them with cattle gate hinges to 6x6 Cedar posts that are already installed.
That’ll be nice.
What size screws did you use?
5/8”
Good job but safety first
Awesome gate, great work. Why does it look like your not cutting perfect 45 degree cuts on your miters but they come out perfect?
Thank you! They are perfect enough when welding.
Very nice. What size/guage steel did you use?
+Brent Riskey let me check and get back to you.
The step at the foot is dangerous
What kind of wood is that?
Cedar
Hi, pls what type of wood did you use?
It was cedar
Thanks
wooden gates dint get wet in rainy seasion???????
It got a little wet but it’s holding up well!
Hypertherm Plasma Cutter. Puede perforar hasta media pulgada.
How much would it cost .63" x 54" fence
No idea. I typically don’t build to sell.
@@AModernMaker okay. Lovely neat work ..may I say sir
I've seen where you can buy a DIY kit at a gunstore to re-blue an old gun, have you ever tried it on structural steel? I wonder how it would look.
+Xrated Rednek I've never tried it, but I'm sure it could give a similar look. They sell it where I buy my metal treatment product. Maybe I'll try it out sometime!
If u do I would like to have the plans pls
+keith henry Definitely
I would like to get the type/size of metals used along with the plans. It turned really great. I just bought my first welder and would like to try this project. Thanks jamie
Fabricare una igual aver como me queda
Mandeme una pic cuando la termine.
Ok
