    Saddle looks too big, rider is forcing heels down/stirrups are too short and she's direct reining or holding a rein in either hand. This is an english rider in western clothing.

    good horsemanship and understanding horses and how they think will protect you so much more that a helmet. everything the horse reacts to always comes back to the human. you can prevent any accedent so easily but people want the quick way to keep safe. plus helmets are untraditional to western riding. and if i didnt have a brain i wouldnt know how to opperate the internet and type this message. wow people are dumb

      I know this was ages ago lol but if your still wondering, the girl is holding reins exactly like English which I understand is similar to western but still. Her elbows are what I call dressage elbows which you don’t normally see in western riding. I ride English but have do western for a year so I don’t know everything! I hope this helps :)

    So many experts here, if measure her from ear to heel she’s perfect, helmets are smart for all riding, her stirrups are there for her comfort and that is adjustable on a per rider basis, her heel and ankle are at the safest angle for secure seat and are correct. She is demonstrating specific form and that’s why she is formal. The instructor is exactly correct. Very nice horse as well.

      It's a shame when those critics, trolls and keyboard warriors spoil a video because what can happen is the author will turn off comments so those of us who want to ask questions can't. I found the video helpful and look forward to watching other video's and even asking questions.

    There is an acceptable theory that things can be done differently by different people...that being said, it doesn't make the instructor any less knowledgeable. I've enjoyed this video and will subscribe to this channel because I enjoy learning from all instructors. It's how a person learns and adapts their riding style to what works best for each of us.....I really believe the comments given here, if not judge mental and productive, are best not shared. When it comes to horses and riding, NO ONE knows EVERYTHING!

    When youre making a video like this, please fix the length of the stirrups first... because of those her position is off with a hollow back. Even in English riding thats wrong...

    People can quibble about some imperfections they see in the presentation, and yes the lower back is a little bit too arched, but frankly, this is one of the most informative videos I have seen on riding, and I appreciate her for doing this. She goes into great detail, and it is very instructional, and I learned a lot. Thanks.

    You can be on the safest horse in the world, but accidents happen. Someone I know (excellent experienced rider) was riding her well broke, push-button-bombproof horse when he stepped on a downed hornet's nest in some higher grass. She came off. Good thing she was wearing a helmet when she hit her head on a log.

  • @jordanelizabeth704

    A kind of "short cut" to "western" leg positioning is the arm check, put the stirrup to your armpit and your fingers should touch the edge of the saddle seat. It's not an exact science but it helped me. I have the same problem with finding the ideal stirrup length- most likely due to the fact the I ride both english and western and all different heights of horses... Good luck!:)

  • @wandamceachern4694
    @wandamceachern4694 11 років тому +1

    She is not in line AT ALL! Her stirrups are far to short! Not to mention that saddles seat is to big for her... She needs about another 2-3 inches of length in those stirrups to sit properly...Not to mention she's not going to be able to get a deep seat at the canter to make it comfortable on her and the horse...shes just going to be bouncing around. This is western not english.

      I don't put my heels down that much because I would force my heels down and that puts pressure and weight in the stirrup so I just put less pressure and just let my heels down bit

  • @46rambo49
    @46rambo49 6 років тому +5

    I like my stirrups up a little like this, personal preference. never use the horn to mount, do just as she describes. if the saddle fits right the horse will move well. way to many "experts" on youtube. I ride a Bosal and metcate reins, I don't expect everybody will as it takes a lot longer to teach the horse to neck rein and most people don't spend enough time communication with their horse. Thank you Kathy Slack for your patience.

    The rider has long legs...I think her stirrups are too short. If they were a little longer, she'd be able to get that deeper seat, and her heels more in alignment.

    The basic (correct) position for both English and Western are the same (ear/shoulder/hip and heel alignment). This girl's stirrups are too short for Western riding, probably because she is too tall for that horse! If her stirrups were a bit longer, her heels would probably come back a bit to be perfectly aligned with her hip joint, where they belong. Too many riders, both English and Western, ride in a chair seat, which puts too much pressure on the sensitive lumbar region of the horse's back.

    • @wildhorses3098

    Only one disagreement with the rider position for western, we should be far more seat based on our pelvic bones, not the seat bones. Seat bones are for sitting on chairs. The leg position here is far more suitable for some english style riding.

    I learned that when you ride western, you should always keep your heel in front of you. That way if the horse spooks at something or comes to a quick stop, your legs stop you from flying forward, where as if you were riding like they do in the video, your legs will go up in the back and you will of on the horses neck.

    I ride on other folks horses a few times a year. Last week, I rode a few hours with my stirrups that short in serious terrain, relying on the wrangler's advice to adjust for me. At the end of the ride, my legs locked up so bad I had a hard time dismounting.

    Omg lady, you see, when you been around the barn a whole lot, you just get your damn saddle, put it on the damn horse and get on up there.
    You sit however is comfortable for you, you have the stirrups in a way that comfortable for you, you hold the rains however is comfortable for you.
    This is the problem with the majority of the horse community, EVERYONE IS AN EXPERT 🙄

    *use the saddle horn to mount
    *no snaffle for horse that well trained in western
    *only one hand on reins
    *stirrups too short for a western rider
    *saddle too big for rider
    *she sits like an english rider (feet don't need to be that flexed + english boots)
    *don't rotate foot to cue horse- this is what your spurs are for
    she would do better giving an english riding lesson like this

    • @kassidyshay5059
      @kassidyshay5059 9 років тому +10

      I am slightly confused as to why you feel a "well trained western horse" should not be ridden in a snaffle. If a well trained western horse has been trained in a snaffle and has a good mouth I don't see why it shouldn't be ridden in a snaffle.
      Also, don't rotate your heels to cue because that's what Spurs are for? I have never used Spurs on any of my horses because I have never needed extra "help" to get them to go.

    • @HitsOutdoors
      @HitsOutdoors 9 років тому +5

      Why would you want her to use the horn to mount? Pulling your weight up by the horn can twist the saddle out of center. Taking a grip on the base of the mane as she did it good mounting.

    • @marynorton4195
      @marynorton4195 9 років тому +4

      I mount like her,
      I use a snaffle on my 18 year old gelding,
      Snaffles are one OR TWO hand bits,
      Her stirrups are a little too short,
      The saddle is not too big,
      That is not what Spurs are for..

    The heels should NOT be down!! They should be FLAT! Heels down will put tension in leg.
    Person on horse sits PERCHED! The lower back should be FLAT!
    The person sitting in the saddle has rolled her seatbones FORWARD ( that's why she sits perched) they need to point down, not forward or backwards.
    Sitting on a horse that way throws rider AND horse of balance.
    This is Old-school teaching!! And not helpful!

    I don't think her heels should point down. The heels is not in line with the head should hips. Plus this seems to be a cutting saddle with stirrups placed a bit forward to sit a stop properly.
    The back is way too much arched, and her pants pockets should stick that much too the cantle.
    The horse seems relaxed, the rider doesn't.

    It bothers me that they didnt bother to check nor mention the horses footing before the girl mounted. Any horse is best mounted when in a square, sturdy stance.

    I live in the country and I'm a cow girl she looks more like an English rider not a western rider first of all in western riding we don't wear helmets we wear cow boy hats we don't have our knee bent that much we sure don't have our heel flexed like that that's what your spurs are for to start the horse not your heel

    I use saddle horse when mounting, how else would u get on? And if u have a sturdy saddle horn, it won't break off, u don't need to have much pressure on the horn, mainly when getting on, when I mount my horses, I use my weight to get on....

      you get on using a mounting block.
      if you ground mount it pulls the horses back.

      Abby Equestrian It does not. This is Western not English. Do you see Cowboys using a mounting block??? Absolutely not.

    @SideviewStudios Not really. The way that woman is saying the name, makes it sound like both. I mean yeah, if the kids name was Tiffany or something and I said Lauren, uh yeah fail. But they both sound somewhat the same.

    Stirrups are too low. Heel is not in alignment. Heel is actually almost 30 degrees off the line. Rider is on the butt, not the seat bones. Lengthening the stirrups would probably solve this. Horse is wringing its tail, not comfortable and/or bored. With proper stirrup alignment, rider can sink weight of legs into the heel, and the heel would automatically wind up in the right position. Also, sometimes, especially with a balky horse, tapping with the heels can help.

    It looks like u should let out the stirrups at least one hole,she doesn't look comfortable and in that position you can't stop properly,also, you sit with your feet slightly forwards,its more comfortable and you do push down on the stirrups a bit

    Why the extreme arch in the riders back? Also, The stirrups are fine if your barrel racing, but spending 6 or 7 hours on the trail with them this short, will cause pain and discomfort especially in the knees.. I also don't like the extreme bend in the ankle. That would be agonizing on a long ride. Just my humble opinion of course....
