    I was going to work on the tube and Mckenzie Crook was sitting opposite me, we both got off at Oxford Circus and were going in the same direction, so i told him what a wonderful series it was, we had a good ole 10 minute chat until we went separate directions, lovely guy, really shy and understated. It’s so well written, full of dry humour, brilliantly acted and it reminds us that it’s simplicity and the small things that make life worth living. • @myelixir
      @myelixir 10 місяців тому

      @@karl9411 I’m not sure if I can put it into words, but although Detectorists is peaceful and has everyday interactions that can be really moving moments in themselves, the profound poignancy from it for me I think comes from the fact that the way detecting is told overall in the story connects us both to The Earth and to All Time and All People and All Living Things and even All Things! I feel it deep in my being, as though it is connecting to something that is part of who we are as humans. Something people perhaps understood long ago (about how we came from The Earth and are The Earth) in a way we can’t feel often in our current, 2023 days or in any of our lifetimes entire because most of us are quite disconnected to The Earth. Yet deep within us, we know it is true and so you can feel it… at a level beyond words which is why it is almost impossible for me at least to describe even remotely satisfactorily.
      It makes me feel connected to all humans who ever existed and all who will ever exist and to The Earth and The Birds and The Tress and The Insects. I mean, as you can see, it is hard to describe it. But it is something that very much comes from the narrative of a made-up-story, hewn to have this purpose. For me, this feeling underlies the entirety of Detectorists and is what lies beneath the surface of the minutiae of everyday interactions in the show, making their humanity all the more profound and poignant too.
      And so of course I don’t feel this feeling as part of something like Gone Fishing, which literally isn’t a created story at all. Or, maybe I just HATE REALITY and so anything that is real and therefore feels too close to real life, I don't like that it jars me into the terror of my real life rather than being escapism for me too? hahaha!?! Only me, obviously!

    This may well prove my weirdness, but I have the theme song in my favourites folder. That's how much of a wonderful, happy impression Detectorists had on me. I'm in Australia now and I am hoping I can watch it here ASAP.

    I have only just found the Detectorists on Netflix and thought it was absolute genius. Hats off (no pun intended) to Mckenzie Crook for creating this little gem! So simple and calming and subtle with the comedy. Was so sad to finish series 3, then someone told me about the Christmas Special.

    It says a lot about the show that so many great actors present and sadly passed work on it. It is a cultural gem and Mackenzie Crook is fast becoming a national treasure (especially considering his work on Worzel Gummidge, as well).

    I haven't watched the special yet. We decided to start again right from the beginning of series onw and work through (not for the first time) Can't wait, but also don't want to see it too soon either. For me it's a pause of the real world. I wish we knew we were in the good old days when we were living them. This brings it all to mind. Thank you Mackenzie

    Brilliant and inspired work by McKenzie Crook and Toby Jones....These stories create such an atmosphere of innocence and of 'presentness'....a childlike quality that is so relaxing and humorous...thoroughly enjoyable and as someone else commented 'wholesome'! I hope the inspiration continues to flow so that we can have more of these delightful 'gems'.

    I absolutely love Detectorists and am always recommending it. I agree with Toby, there was some consolation watching it through lockdown. In fact, it got me through lockdown. It is understated comedy genius and the characters are all wonderful. Andy and Lance's friendship is heartwarming. I was laughing and crying whilst watching the Christmas special story unfold. Brilliant. I'm just sorry they were not given the interview that they and the show deserve here. With interviewers who clearly hadn't watched the show, interrupting and making it about themselves. They try and come across as laid back when really they come across as uninterested and as though they are doing their guests a favour. Eurgh.
