I once took a friend to a DG show (he'd heard them before and was interested, not necessarily a fan) and he described the way MC Ride commanded energy on stage and kept the audience hanging on his every movement as being almost cult leader or dictator-like. So when I heard this guy say he believed him I immediately laughed out loud
I love seeing people with a strong knowledge of music being totally surprised, blown away, proud, etc of experimental groups and being totally accepting and open to what they're bringing to the table. It's such a wholesome feeling to see old respect new (not an age dig by any means) and vice versa.
Dude, you need to check out "Hella" . That was zach hills previous 2 piece band. Him and a guitarist doing the craziest math rock music out there. There was a full band line up for one record but the duo records are where it's at! Absolutely mental drumming in this band.
its so wholesome and cool seeing the passion and excitement someone has when they hear something for the first time which they enjoy! i love music so much dude
I watch this video every few months and every time I still feel so stoked at how excited you are to hear how he plays, seriously amazing to see someone so in tune to music
its amazing how i can watch a guy listen to a band ive listened to for almost a decade and feel like im listening to it for the first time again alongside him
Zach Hill was in a band called Hella, like everyone had been saying. However, he has some solo records which are fantastic. There is a song called Necromancer, it’s pure rhythmic bliss.
Love your visceral and sincere reaction, and you're spot-on : there's no way to analyze sh!t when you're just being hit by a 100mph locomotive coming straight from hell!
My god he’s done it Honestly from a drummer technicality Zach Hill is in his own strange world a world of great discography to explore highly recommend
I think he has long transcended technicality, without losing it, but layering more direct feeling or something like that that is communicated on top. (He’s one of my favorites too, so not disagreeing just adding my own flavor)
I am living for this reaction. You should see Zach Hill play an entire Death Grips album handcuffed for no reason. Also check out the bands: Hella, Lightning Bolt, Meshuggah (“Clockworks” or “Bleed”), Deantoni Parks, & Ian Chang (also Ian Chang’s Sunhouse demonstrations are cool).
Experimental hip hop is the best way to describe this masterpiece of a group... love Death Grips and their impact on music culture And they are Sacramento based group
You've gotta do Brian Chippendale. his main band is Lightning Bolt, his solo project is called Black Pus. Pretty much all videos are good but I'd especially recommend Dead Cowboy by Lightning Bolt at TAICOCLUB and "Black Pus in his crazy attic"
There's no way to prepare yourself for DG if you've never heard them. Great reaction, and great to see you enjoy it. I've been a Zach Hill fan since the first Hella record, and DG still hit(s) me with surprises.
In 2009, Zach was playing with a band called Wavves. There’s an amazing live video that came out when they played in new york. It’s insane because he’s playing these simple rock beats and then breaking into these psychotic fills. He’s incredible. He’s done so many projects before death grips and he’s one of the best drummers I’ve ever seen in my life
You haven't even seen his practice routine. Btw, those are the drum fills from the original track when they were living on food stamps in a Sacramento business complex basement. It only gets crazier from there-on-out
My introduction to death grips was through their song "no love" the track starts with mc ride wailing and then the most monsterous beat I'd ever heard in my life consumed me. it sounded like Godzilla was walking through a city leaving a path of destruction in his wake. the most brutal and powerful sounding music I'd heard up to that point. this guy had a perfect first reaction.
Legend has it Hill was offered a drum-head endorsement during his Hella days. They asked how many heads he needed for a tour, he told them and they never replied after that.
It’s really cool to hear this group processed from a rock music fan’s point of view. Love the comparisons to huge classic rock drummers in this extremely different genre, and your enthusiasm is way relatable.
the music bypasses all of the systems we use to comprehend things (logic, language, reason, etc.) and makes you understand it on a primal level akin to a psychedelic trip (have you ever tried to explain a revelation to someone after the trip wears off lol?). solid vid, glad u enjoyed them so much =)
As an avid fan of Death Grips, I loved watching your video. It was so interesting to hear your perspective and technical knowledge about Zach's drumming, combined with the shock and surprise you felt from watching this vid. Thank you for the vid! I really enjoyed it!
Hey man, big fan of this series. However it would be cool if you dissect one or two beats/fills that you like from each video and do a quick tutorial/breakdown!

"That's like if Questlove," I was gonna say, "Was homeless and schizophrenic." By the way, I don't know anything about drumming. What's Zach doing with the snares not on his drums? It creates that neat kind of hollow noise. I've seen him do that a lot in videos and really like the sound. Who are some other drummers that do that? Also here's one of my favorite of Zach's sets: ua-cam.com/video/AAKFjnvPHTA/v-deo.html

First time visitor to your channel, absolutely love your reaction. You were floored within seconds and were somewhat speechless. Very honest. I appreciate that.
that "awesome fucked up cymbal" is apparently the bottom end of a dryer "barrel" (Like where the clothes rest in, the end kind of "cap" of the cylinder) that Zach fucked up by drumming on. He used to use it exclusively as his only cymbal.
Absolutely loved this video my man, awesome job. Your reaction brought me right back to the first time I heard death grips as well. Look forward to watching through the rest of your videos! Keep it real man ✌️
As someone who was really somewhat more interested in the synthetic elements of Death Grips' music, seeing you light up about Zach's drumming and picking it apart really made me appreciate Death Grips in a whole new way. Also your first reaction was hilarious! I think we all learned something today--I'm brand new to the channel, just subscribed lol
Watching this has made me unspeakably happy during such a rough time. The unadulterated joy of discovering Death Grips, the look on your face as you were like “I believe this singer,” thanks man!
"It's just like everybody on stage is like vomiting from their soul" that's the most beautiful thing you can fucking say to a musician. And i agree here.
"I believe in EVERY thing he's saying. I believe him." this is the correct reaction to Mr. Grips

"What am I listening to?" he says in an inquisitive voice as he grooves to the music. Death Grips had that effect on everyone the first time.

Just listen to "The Money Store" all your questions will be answered.
The Toes Up Podcast While all of their albums are great, i’d say that Bottomless Pitt or No Love Deep Web demonstrate his drumming a bit better.
No way, Notm is by far the best showcase of his drumming and rhythmical talent
or as i like to call it now

Exmilitary, the album Guillotine is off of, is a good example of Mr. Hill's drumming.
