Reasonable Doubt 20: Kareem "Biggs" Burke Remembers Jay Z's Debut

- Jay Z’s Reasonable Doubt wasn’t instantly crowned a rap classic when it was released 20 years ago on June, 25 1996- it took some time. But now, two decades later, Hov’s debut album is widely considered one of hip-hop’s greatest works.
Meet Biggs, who, along with Jay and Damon Dash started Roc-A-Fella Records, the independent label where Hov released Reasonable Doubt and set the foundation for a two decade long career which includes just as many rap accolades as it does business benchmarks.
Reasonable Doubt will be Forever a classic hands down
But illmatic is better
Nah in my opinion I think reasonable doubt is better that illmatic
+Freestyle 4 what the fuck does that have to do with another album being a classic fucker?
And I don't agree.
+Aaron Carter K, U mad or nah??
+Aaron Carter is u mad or is u angry 😅😅😅
this dud is mad humble for a person who partailly responsible for jayz career
kocky keyz ...Agree! + many others' careers.
so true
You can tell from just a 16 minute interview that Biggs is a real one 💯
No Illuminati... Just Big thinking, Hustling and Hard work....
That Illuminati BS is what ignorant people use as a scapegoat for not being able to understand the amount of work & the kind of work people put into their success.. I know this because I am also poor lol
💯💯
Karim, true, I always hate it when feeble minded less successful people try to credit a man's hard struggle out of poverty to the devil and Illuminati, always making it seem like God 'took a break' from handing out blessings
Karim Selkridge I don’t believe none of Illuminati shit
Yes it took those things along with that illuminati shid. Jay taped in with that freemasonry. He like a big time wizard.
This guy is great, he does not make it awkward for the people being interviewed.
back in 96 RD got slept on and took so long to reach gold status, years later people went back and notice how great the album was!
true and what's crazy is I'm from Detroit and me and my homie listened to that tape front to back all day everyday in 96
+Ace Dinero I heard someone say few weeks ago that when RD drop in 96 only NY dudes was on it...see dudes outside NY was up on it too!!
Reasonable Doubt was a underground album tbh. The first time I heard Jay-Z ever on I'll Be with Foxy Brown. I did go back & I fell in love with it.
+Ace Dinero sometimes when albums get slept on its because of other great albums of that time...in 96 pac was so dominate at his peak with all eyes on me the first ever double cd in rap, and later 7 day theory, fugees had the score and nas it was written came out the month after RD and went platinum...so alot of times it depends on what is popping at that time!
Exactly, I say it all the time... but they were all Jay-Z fans back then let them tell it.. Fact is in 1996 it was so many established and great rappers it was no room for Jay-Z. Tupac and Biggie were still alive, Nas, Fugees, Outkast was on their second album, Tribe working on their last album, Busta was on fire... 1996 was just sick
Reasonable Doubt is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Love this Documentary. Biggs was always the quiet genius.
ArtGod it’s crazy seeing him doing more talking now
Factz
Fuck u nigha reply to this if u alive
this album and In my lifetime VOL1 helped me through a rough time
+TripJay21 lucky me, was so slept on!!!
+TripJay21 damn I'm surprised & happy that I'm not the only one that received motivation & faith from Lucky Me.
+G The Genius yes,my favorite of all, songs, Lucky me!???

Sry Rob but im not listening, worlds colliding and all that.
I saw +Rob Markman open for Cypress Hill this past October in Brooklyn... dope MC, real lyrics. he mentioned how he was a writer during his set, glad i caught this video.
This channel is becoming my favorite and my go to for substantial hip hop stories.
Great interview. As a big fan of Reasonable Doubt and early Roc-a-Fella, I was always curious about Biggs and his influence. Well done.
I appreciate how they showed love for “Bring it on” my favorite Hov verse!
This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen. Please keep going.
The second verse of D'evils is like my favourite verse of all time
Excellent interview! Shout out to Kareem "Biggs" Burke.
I love hearing the back stories of how are greatest stars made it ect.
I like the interviewer....always thorough!

jb.shalom
"As you Should"...I smiled the same way
That was a dope interview bro
Damn good interview
Reasonable Doubt is my favorite rap album of all times. When I first heard it i told all my friends he was gonna be the best. They all laughed.
Dope interview!!!
Biggs is so laid back, reserved. Been part of an important era of hip hop
I remember waiting for the Wiz to open. So that I can cop Reasonable Doubt. I took it to school. I made my boy listen to it. He was so amped to hear himself on that record. Among the all time best rap albums ever created.
Really enjoyed this interview wow
That fast rapping style was a Brooklyn Thing word Up Jaz 0 birth that style...but when Biggie came on the scene he changed all that told Jigga to slow it down some....I remember when son use battle rap at the basketball court out Marcy he would body mad people.... Reasonable Doubt will forever be timeless..Word Up
we was in Memphis bumpin RD when it first came out
Always dope content from Genius. Keep it comin
Does somebody have a link of that Jay Z performance on Shook Ones ?
I'm tryna look for it😭😭
Biggs also said that Mase has a song rapping over Dead Presidents beat.
no talk of d'evils? jay had the dopest line on that song
picking their brains for angles (angels) on All the evils (d'evils) that the game'll do
never put that like that💯💯💯...i alwas favored the tale in the 2nd verse 2 many lines there
Airbornebull yesssssss
Word!
colecarter reaching with that Angels part
colecarter We use to play with building blocks now we fight over block buildings that makes a killlin.....Man smh how could they forgot this one smh..
It was good to see Biggs, considering he's been behind the scenes for years
Overlooked bar from D'evils. We Use To Fight For Building Blocks, Now We Fight For Blocks With Buildings That Make The Killing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love this channel
In the top 5 albums of all time.
This is a masterpiece video about a masterpiece album!!!
Great Work keep it up!!
great interview! biggs always been that silent partner so its cool to hear his side
Fire interview 🔥💥💥
First time I'm hearing Biggs actually speak outside of that skit. Jay is an artist to the very definition of the word. When you can take stories from ppl around you and translate it into hip hop gospel, you are an artist. Not a fuckin rapper but an artist. 💯
My favorite album was the gift and the curse. that album right there was a two disc CD. I brought that with no damn hesitation. lol
Great interview Kings
#Biggs, #DrMayaAngelou said *"You know a man when he enters the room,"* that's you, Mr. B. Calm, composed, self-contained wisdom. Intelligence! So sexy!
Great interview! Thankhs for uploading this.
Great interview Genius!
This interview is great
DOPE DOPE INTERVIEW LOVE THE QUESTIONS YOU ASKED !!
My fav album!!! LOve it!
Biggs to Rocafella is like Slim to CMB..Plays the background and watch the monies bubble
That 90's (golden era) the feelin was different, air was different, was just different! Them lyrics raised alot us when pops got ghost . Reasonable doubt classic hands down! Smart black bruthas made history wit roc label! Still wish big & jay could gotten to do the commission album
I think 1995 was the peak of rap civilization, not to say that it was the best year, but this was the year when lyrical and beat styles were perfected. It was also the last year of "diversity" in rap. After that, high percentage of rappers slowly started using the same styles and theme, homogenizing the game for a while. Strangely enough, that same time was also the dawn of a new age in basketball, when we started to see become more modern and flashy in playing style. Think Shammgod, and Iverson who would go on to change the look and style of the whole NBA.
+HowToMakeBeats very true! Good point👍🏾
A really good interviewer, very interesting to listen to!
nice interview
I'm shocked 'Feelin It' didnt get a mention. The story behind it alone was crazy with Camp Lo originally owning the beat. But Jay took it to a whole other level. Easily my favorite off RD
Reasonable doubt isn't on iTunes anymore SMH
Greatest album ever..
@genius good interview. I salute u.
dope interview
Brooklyn born, I am inspired!
I always imagined Biggs to have a deep voice, guess I was wrong. now I have two more song to add to the "need to hear" list.
i got emotional when they played the bring it on verse lol
much more than music
funny. just discovered this album earlier this year but damnn one of my favorites top 15 all time
that was amazing info!!! big up biggs
oh Boy! I see the light now!
can I live , by far best song
Jnel28 word up
i need to hear the 95 South!
Nice video bro and i like the dude who gave the interview, he seems like a relaxed cat that knows his shit :)
more like an overzelous fan who googled and wikipedia'd his info. I bet he wasn't listening to Jay-Z in 1996
urbanflavorz Nothing wrong with doing some research before talking a interview bro.
TheChameleon2008 Of course not. It just seemed he did all research and had no authenitic info but he might be younger so I won't hold that against him. OVerall good interview. Biggs rarely does interviews. I'm just mad the interviewer really thought the skit with the lady was Real lol. That was clear as day a skit. He was almost trying to lead Biggs into saying it was real.
urbanflavorz True, but classic music never dies so maybe he didn't listen in 96 but ill bet he played it to death :)
+mike dollars we knows but nothing wrong with haters tho. its impossible to always stay positive so some like it and some dont and we all have our rights to get the things from our chests 😁
Wow - I’ve never heard that other version of Black Gangsta
Wrong song at 11:19, should be Bring it on
Good catch! We added an annotation with a correction.
Yea i saw that and i was like huh? Is there another song with big? Lol
My dude use to walk around playing that shit all the time I hated that shit he use to be like give it alil u gonna understand it later remember him saying that shit hella times lol RIP Wide I didn't get it until summer of 98 it's in my top 10 albums of all times
Out of all Jay's songs Black Gangster is my fav.
100k subs! congratz
This was a Great interview!!!! That guy did his research. The only thing I would have love to know is what made Jay Z switch up his style on reasonable doubt
illmatic...Nas ruled NYC at the time...dead presidents even samples Nas on the chorus
so you can understand him that's y he switch his style hov
Reasonable Doubt = Back when hustling was so serious
iconic.
Shout out to Hov..
Love this
Love this guy 💪 Big Kareem
feelin' it was fire
Classic
the timing of the release was the issue with why the project didn't stand out more initially lol he dropped it smack dab in the middle of the Tupac/biggie feud
And this is why Jay And Biggs still good today
What's the instrumental when they start talking about 95 south?
Young!
The joint with Jay-Z & Original Flavor, use to knock like a mf!!!
...G.O.A.T. 🐐
Jay lyrical is one of best ever..
Great insight to a top 5 hip-hop album of all time! Personally in the top 3 for me!
whats the clothing company in the back?
Jay best album
Reasonable Doubt And The BluePrint Vol.1
DOES ANYBODY KNOW THIS BEAT IN THE END OF THE INTERVIEW IT STARTS ABOUT 15 MIN AND 4 SECONDS PLEASE LET ME KNOW
8:15 is that Shook Ones beat?
Reach the top should have made Reasonable doubt.
Wish this album was still on Apple music smh
Does anybody know the name of the song that starts at 13:57?
Wtf did they select two back to back snippets from both Scarface and Snoop talking bad about cops? Almost making it seem like that was the central theme or something... 🤔
Regrets….certified hood classic
