“this would be the equivalent of drake and kendrick beefing” that foresight is amazing….
4 years later Drake & Kendrick really beefing
they were technically already beefing at the time it’s been going on for like 10 years
Nas was number 6 on the hip hop Forbes list last year. Y’all act like he fell off the planet earth.
Bc he ain’t dead if he was they will be movie about him
AND JAY Z IS WHERE AND BY HOW MUCH.FOH
Idk Nas has 70 million, Lil Wayne is sitting on twice that at 150 million...
Then Jay Z out front with a billion
Ameen Hassan now did that money come from rap?
Nas signed TWO horrible Sony deals back to back. Fortunately for Nas the homie Hov signed him to Roc A Fella and he’s managed by Roc Nation now and they open doors for people. I’m happy Nas is on the Forbes list because Kelis is a very expensive mistake.
18 years later and they are STILL debating who really won… that means the culture won.
The Weakest Baldwin real talk 💯
They both won in funds. The Culture is dead. Peace.
I look at it like this : nas won da battle but Hov won da war
Hrant Esserian | The War isn’t over.
Cool - are nas and Hov aware of that though?
The thing about Ether is when that record dropped it was hands down the number 1 requested song on the radio in NYC for a couple of weeks. Flex broke it and dropped a bomb on it on hot 97 and proceeded to play that song no less than 10 or 20 times straight. That song was the definition of an over kill and still one of the greatest hip hop diss records ever recorded.
For me, it's without a doubt up there with 2Pac's Hit Em Up! 💯
@@kingsavage5832at least Nas wrote his diss.
@@CB-yt5xloh so you’re trying to say 2pac did not write his verses fr hittem up 😂😂😂 everyone one on that track wrote there own verse the only reason outlaws was on there Because that was their time to shine
I really respect that these two artists kept it on music and it did not turn violent. That’s how hip hop beef should be. It should be battling not violence.
Jay z and Nas is the best beef ever from a hip hop standpoint. 2pac and biggie was very one sided and only one of them was taking direct shots at the other.
@@TyroneBiggums2003I hope you're referring to 2 pac. Biggie never said Pac name only snoop dog and other west coast rappers.
Hit Em Up was a shoot heard around the world with Bigs name and his whole crew. Not to mention his wife.
Had Nas released the original version of Ether, I really Believe in my heart that the "illumibots" would have killed him, I GUARANTEE it! The ONLY reason why Nas didn't release it was because Scarface advised him not to do it, he VIOLATED Jay
@@TyroneBiggums2003 not to mention both Biggie and Pac ended up getting killed in their primes. It’s debatable whether the beef had anything to do with Big being shot but still. That was the definition of an industry beef.

💯 Facts, but of course this was all pre-social media, UA-cam etc. days! These were the days when radio play could make or break you and records were physically sold which called for 💰 & lots of effort put in by the artist and their team. This is 1 reason why J sold more than Nas who even mentioned it several times throughout the documentary (J payed 4 plays and favor at the stations). You can basically do everything from your home today if you wanted to. Different times, different rules to the game.

Nas won period. Their business ventures or other dealings outside of making a song has nothing to do with their lyricism. I get annoyed when people say Nas won the battle but Jay won the war. The whole battle and war was over WHO was the better rapper and Nas won, period.
And if we mentioned anything out of lyrics let's talk about how Jay-Z was a Nas groupie, and obsessed with Nas that he rapped like him, sampled him, got rejected by him and because Jay-Z was hurt by this even screwed his baby mother to feel more like him. Now if that ain't a case of single white female syndrome then I don't know what is.

@Kurt Jovain ok...whatever you say. Ignore reality cuz you're a stan. Cool
@Kurt Jovain LOL...you accuse Nas of not making sense but you're the one who's not making sense. Nas was born in '73 so he was 15 in '88. Second, those verses aren't related to each other. He said Jay was calling him when he never gave him his number cuz he was sweating him and his style THEN he says Jay was getting chased to his building back then which is accurate. Jay grew up getting bullied until he started selling drugs later. Jay stans always claim that Takeover was more factual when all Jay did was give his opinion on Nas' career..."one hot album every ten years average?" WTF is that? It Was Written is universally considered a classic and it went 3X platinum. It was one of the 90s top albums. Nas won the war too. Ether was like an atomic bomb. There was nothing more to say. Game over. In the streets, J lost all respect and could never be taken seriously afterwards. And if you talk about fame and money, that's what Ether was all about, J selling his soul for fame and money. Jay Z's commercial success just confirmed Ether's premise.
True, although I do like some of Jays later stuff like Story ok OJ and Paris but personally I feel he is only where he is now because of Beyonce, no denying she is bigger than him
Very detailed Documentary 👏👏
Made you look was a shot. “You a slave to a page in my rhyme book”.
"Name a rapper that I ain't influence..."
Nothing more can be said after that line really...
Rakim, Krs one, llcool j and all those other greats that came b4 him. Actually Rakim and Kool G Rap Def influenced Nas to
Unless u name a rapper that he ain't influence😂
@@sugs1191 are you dumb ? how is he going to influence rappers that came before him ?
Here after J.cole threw in the towel, I desperately need Drake to respond to Kendrick.
Then create something as close to the Nas vs Jay-Z beef. That's real hip-hop
Great content in context
Nas Escobar hands down the legit winner.
Alot of this was covered by hiphopdx but u dug up those j tracks and interview that makes this a classic
Then why mention hiphopdx?
Ground Beef thought I was the only one lol
The fact that NaS was long broke up with Carmen before Jay dropped those lines about her in his disses makes it not nearly as powerful as people make it 💯
Good job in your post
Nas won their battle. Even Jay has admitted it multiple times. But if "Ether" strengthen Jay z to become a billionaire and the most successful rap artist of all time, so be it. Props to both for turning their beef into individual success and not death like their peers.
Ether is one of the best diss tracks still to this day
@@skizifacation 😂😂😂😂
FAX, its always better when the artists sort their beef out instead of carrying that grudge to their grave
Kanye just surpassed Jay Z in terms of how successful he is lol

Fast forward to 2023... Nas been killing it with the King's Disease series and the Magic release... he ain't finished with this game called Hip Hop. Dope commentary tho 👌
Facts
NaS won cuz the line “you traded your soul for riches” is true. Jay z did do that
ByL EnZo Nas was winning... and then came Carmen
Nas traded his soul for riches. The minute he made a song with Lauryn
@L. C Nas sold his soul the moment he signed his contract with Columbia Records Nas was just less ambitious than Jay
Okay so didn’t nas and he flopped, while jay z made CLASSIC albums your point is invalid
I think that line came a few years too early. He sold out after the record he did with R.Kelly (2004)
4:44 and The Black Album are exceptions tho
nas ethered him. jay fought back but nas made his soul burn slow. it took a while for jay to get back up from that lethal lyrical ether nas issued him. nas went in.
fought back? Jay started it
Lmao nas made up his whole life, jayz meant every word on the track big difference 🤦🏾♂️
Nas is by far the superior rapper from a lyrical standpoint, and that was never more evident than a comparison of Ether and Takeover. Also Nas didn't constantly steal bars from other rappers. Not sure how this is even a conversation.
Ether wasn’t lyrical 😂
The thing I love about Nas is he did it his way. He never tried to be anyone else but himself. He has been the best in the game, at the pinnacle of the game, at the fore front of what’s hot in Urban culture all without riding trends. You can’t name another multi platinum artist like him. Some say his music is boring yet he’s still on of the greatest rap artist ever. He never had to compromise who he was/is, kiss ass or rub elbows with certain people to get on. That means more than a dollar.
2023 VISION 👍 👍👍 BIG FACTS JAY SH*T ON ALOT OF PEOPLE BEACAUSE OF MY MONEY 🤔
PREACH!!! NAS IS TOP 2 OF ALL TIME
Nas… All-day till forever
I definitely agree with your war and battle commentary. I just hate that we compare Jay Z & Nas because to me they are completely different artists and people. Nas has a different love for music (due to his dad’s influence) and is held to a higher standard. When Nas puts out commercial songs, it’s the “Nas fell off”. But at the same time, Jay Z does several commercial songs and everyone loves it. Nas wasn’t trying to play the political games, hence why he hasn’t won a Grammy.
Jay Z not getting signed to a label was his biggest blessing. He learned ownership, which made him the mogul he is today. Because of Jay-Z’s come-up story and current success, he gets more respect from all generations. When people talk about Jay Z, it’s beyond the music. Nas put out a “grown man” album (Life is Good) in 2012 and it was phenomenal, but rarely mentioned. But when Jay Z did it (4:44), everyone loved it. Nas is just ahead of his time and paved the way lyrically.
Agreed
Exactly
Facts bro
Nas is like... The king of hip hop, take it from a hip hop head that started listening and devouring hop hop since 1987. There is no greater rapper, no greater lyricist, no greater father of hip hop still releasing brilliant albums to this day. Nas is like fucking God!
P
And you call it "hop hop"

Thank you so much for this full breakdown!! I didn’t know Nas was this big in hip hop! People mainly just talk about Jay Z. Thank you for this! ❤️
Illuminati
Nas was big back in the day but even at his peak he’s never been an extremely popular rapper like Jay. Jay after reasonable doubt has been more of a mainstream rapper where Nas has mostly been more of a lyrical street rapper (with a few hits). That being said Nas catalogue is legendary and he’s still putting out amazing albums. He’s my current GOAT. Jay is up there too.
Nas was big but only in New York. I had just come from Africa and was in Minnesota and still remembered when Jay Z dropped H to the Izzo and Big Pimpin'. These songs were played in the streets and Nas was only played on TV. That Either song got people talking about Nas. When I moved to Florida, Jay-Z was being played in the streets. I feel sorry for Nas though. To get your girl smashed by a dude that you called ugly is hard to take! My number one all times diss track is 'Either".
Nas was big with people who paid attention to rap. Jay Z crossed over onto pop charts. People who barely listen to rap knew who Jay was. Jay being more popular is a good or bad thing depending on who you're talking to. Crossing over was a liability back in the day (MC Hammer) which is why a lot of rappers became actors once they reached cross over. Again view points depend on who you're talking to. The focus on being cross over popular didn't become a thing until the early to mid 2000s.
You had just come back from Africa you had absolutely no idea what was going on.. Nas was the main deal and he didn't and still doesn't jump into trends@@myernyanwleh2119
What makes Nas' story in this whole beef and the track Ether so legendary is that he doesn't just lyrically cook Hov, he effectively resurrected his own career simultaneously. He got so much flack for his last few albums like Nastradamus and I Am and then Ether hit along with Stillmatic and it was Nas' way of essentially booting everyone off his throne and reclaiming NYC.
