£400 Dora E Rider -- Review And Range Test!!!

- Опубліковано 3 лис 2024
- Today myself and James had the pleasure of riding possibly the cheapest electric bike available to buy. This £400 second hand EV has been on loan to us for some time now and boasts a range of up to 70kms on a full charge and amazingly came supplied with two batteries. Join us while we take a look around this Chinese built machine, look at its build quality, drawbacks and test its real world range!!!
Cheers from Canada ! This video was very well done. Anyone thinking of purchasing a scooter style e-bike would be wise to have a look at this. Covered pretty much everything and you gave a great honest on board audio visual presentation. Again ..... well done !
great review! The sound quality is phenomenal. Points made are even better.
An uncomfortable wind sock 👍🏻
This is a great test ride review which really shows eveyone what to expect should we want to buy one of these great little bike's, so thanks for making it.
Very impressive. 21p to charge up and then you can do 70 miles on it.
Could be fun in the summer.
On both batteries yes. Awesome stuff 👍🏻
@@Jamesandkate ah. 35 miles per battery. Still that is really good, and would be more than enough for my commute.
@@ArthurEmbleton going cheap on eBay classifieds currently 👍🏻
@@ArthurEmbleton James gave up after 35 miles. There was more in the battery. And of course they'll be more in the summer. I'm guessing 40 miles per battery?
Issue spotted your rear axle is missing the plastic covers/ spacers to prevent the rear wheel shifting. Would suggest you replace the hub motor bearings given the state of the axle and the axle itself.
I would also check the welds on the swing arm, mine are suspect as they are not clean welds. Additionally check your front fork seals mine have failed at the top.
My range of my E-Rider model 30 city is 6-9 miles on a full charge depending on wither the main headlight dipped beam is on. Your speeds are spot on for kmph.
Again my experience is that it will do 15mph up a slight slope if you have a full charge.
You didn't mention anything about the regenerative braking system which is supposed to charge your battery when coasting or braking.
I just bought one of these for £450 after haggling on ebay after watching this. Excited for the arrival
How did it turn out? is it holding up?
Thanks for the review and test. Similar experience to my my electric moped, Silence S01. The faster you go, the more the range reduces so make sure that you plan your journey to not run out of power. If you do, the AA Breakdown will charge you £105 for recovery. Running out of charge is not recognised as a breakdown!
I really enjoyed that James and Kate. Thank you 🙏🏻
A pleasure sir 👍🏻
Awesome and honest video as always!
Cheers pal 👍🏻
My brother is getting a NIU scooter soon (also Chinese). Their cheapest model is about £2k after the government grant. With that you get a Bosch motor and Panasonic battery pack so that’s a much better choice in my opinion.
Although he’s getting the NGT model which is more closely comparable to a 125cc scooter in everything but top speed. With the government grant it’s about £3k which is about the same as a Yamaha or Honda 125, except the running costs are so much less.
I'll research it, thanks for the heads up 👍🏻
I'd get one if it weren't for everyone else on the roads 😄
Yep, a lung full of van exhaust, no thanks.
ephphatha230 plus your silent. A few folks have been knocked off due to lack of driver awareness. Load cans really do save lives.
Thanks for having the balls to try this out for us on a blistering cold british windy day...👍 Looks like a bargain indeed. Good luck, ✌❤
Excellent review guys , audio was perfect .
Good to hear, the weather was awful so please it came through ok. God bless Zoom and Saramonic 🙏🏻
@@Jamesandkate And God bless you all, it is not easy to do anything with tech outside in the cold ,my fingers fall off just to take few pictures here in Finland
@@supernova1976 we love Finland. We stayed in Nellim a few years ago. It was -40 but absolutely beautiful. Can't wait to return 🙏🏻
I’ve just bought one of these, except mines a slightly newer model (2021) I haven’t been far yet, just done around 5 miles.
How many miles did you get out of that first bettery? You were talking about changing the battery at 90% which I didn’t quite understand, I’m assuming I misheard and you actually said 19% when you had to stop and change the battery?
Good review vid by the way and helpful.
Fantastic deal
The future of the urban commute ? Congestion and road charging will surely lead to this type of vehicle and perhaps e'bikes becoming the future transport of choice for many. Those in the squeezed middle and below will meet increasing Govt. taxes with avoidance strategies rather than stick to their cars or suffer public transport. If they could be sold new for less than £500 then it would be a no-brainer. Great review.
Thank you for you comments. I really think these will catch on, they're just too cheap to run 👍🏻
I recently bought a Volt Metro peddle assist eBike with the larger battery (of the two batteries available.). I reckon the range (with hills and wind) is about 30 to 35 miles.
I found that when the battery was down to about 5 percent of the full charge, the assist dropped off. It was very noticeable on hills. But the main thing is it is really great fun and I use it more than my old non-EV cycle. I also feel the Volt Metro is very well built, it feels solid when you ride it, which gives you confidence.
Can't believe the value of this, puts my £2200 giant ebike to shame. Though I can at least go places the e-rider can't and get some exercise.
Amazing review, great watch
As David Dickenson would say this is the real deal ! I like it good video as usual 👍
Thank you sir 🙏🏻
That tractor was a blast from the past.
It was. It's a local guy we see regularly on our runs 👍🏻
If you have a car license issued before 2001 you can ride up to 50cc (which the erider is comparable to) without a CBT
Please tell me I don't look that old 😳
Don’t tell me you think I’m old ;-)
Minimum age for that would be what, 34. That’s not that old. I think.
James and Kate hey does your wrist ache after a while keeping it on full throttle
Great review. The problem on a bigger road at 30mph is all the impatient idiots that overtake at the stupidest places like blind bends etc. Best use as a city bike and be in front of the idiots 👍
1.2KWH battery off economy 7 is around 15pence to share fully. I'm paying 13p per kwh. So cheaper than chips :)
A real bargain this 👍🏻
13p per kwh is expensive for E7. I’m paying 8 point something ( in late 2019 )
I'd say the speedo is reasonably accurate. A little behind. The 40 km/h you achieved looks like it. This is what I'd expect from this type of scooter.
Faster than my citycoco and I bet the suspension is smoother !
Thanks James. It's a handy little scooter to have around. Two questions: Can you please show us many miles it can manage on one battery (some of those Chinese gauges are notoriously inaccurate)? Which license is needed to be able to drive it (e.g. full car license, motorcycle license, provisional license, etc. I wasn't sure what Kate said)?
I actually mapped it from an app as it has no odometer on this model. You need a CBT to ride the bike with either a provisional license or a full car license. If you've had you licence since before 1996 (I think) you can ride with no L plates or CBT. Check that though, maybe wrong 🙄
How much is the car insurance? How much is road tax? How do you mot? Thanks
That's cheaper and faster than my road bike....and that's powered by flapjacks and coffee which are much more expensive!
Also think you may have found a new microphone set-up for Jonathan! 😁
Yeah I found when I did my 20 mile cycle commute I spent more on snacks than fuel.
Amazing value
Sounds like an absolute bargain you got there - am kinda envious, could do with a runabout like that myself!
They're selling on eBay currently 👍🏻
Nice one, a race with JC is on the cards, 2 batteries on the go, before he gets his QC new bike..
Quite possibly 😁👍🏻
I have a similar ebike like this and love them mine was under half price near new from eBay 2nd owner . . But i chose to buy the Eskuta albeit there sx250 pedal bike 15mph not even the similar issue equivalent erider models . The Eskutas look less real moped like Vs eriders are built assembled in UK with full spare parts available , 1 year / 5000 mile warranty good customer relations office dept in Nuneaton and also PDI on delivery . They have their own call out repair service , and 48v 250watt 20amp batteries are good for 35 to 50miles .
The delivery companies like deliver , just eat , My Hermes , dominoes pizza buy these for their staff , which shows they would have to take Vehicle purchase safety seriously and likewise the Eskutas fit that criteria unlike the e riders above . No doubt their moped 30mph bikes are better too . Then again Eskutas Chinese bulk order factory sell sx250 Eskutas ebikes for £800 from China factory pricing and not as cheap as 300 each for the erider pedal e bikes like mine etc!
thats unbelievably cheap and practical stuff !!!
Early days for all this stuff so the speed and real range just aren’t cutting the mustard yet.
That will change as battery’s & chargers get better.
The air will also improve dramatically.
Twizy verses e rider ??
hi my friend, please add my whatsapp:008618823670894
Looks good to me.
What more do you need for an urban commute ? That full motorcycle kit probably cost more than the bike but for a short commute a helmet and gloves would probably suffice with other garments to suit. Good move Kate.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Good review - A question please . . . (I am new to these Electric bikes)
Does it make any noise? I'm worried that your clueless pedestrian will walk out in front of one of these since they are used to hearing a loud buzz from a 50CC engine to warn of their approach. Any safety implications? Thanks
Well I have an NIU NQI Sport, fully electric, it has variable sounding indicators (to your liking) inc hazards. Good for driving through built up areas, pedestrian zones. So covers peds walking out in front of you. There is talk about the regs implementing some sort of fake ‘noise’. Just be aware road users may not hear or see you
It's now £2000 on ebay. Someone in town is riding one this model without number plates and possibly insurance. It should be made clear this is a moped not a bike.
If you are in the area of Hanover you can test my unu scooter: 2kw motor, 50km range or 100km if you have 2 batteries, 45 km/h as well.
Thanks for the offer 👍🏻
Nice video! I’m interested to know if there was any annoying sounds from the charger when charging the battery? Or anything on charger or battery that became “suspiciously hot”?
Read a car magazine where they tried a electric moped where the charger was so noisy that the guy reviewing it was asked by his colleagues “if he could charge it somewhere else than the office”.
Any idea what it's power output is? I'm just wondering if the battery packs could be used for home storage solutions?
600W continuous I believe, so easily good enough for home storage 👍🏻
I advise you right now to stop using your E-Rider model 30 city electric moped.
The MCB fitted to these mopeds is an AC circuit breaker which will not trip at the rated breaking current on a DC load. In fact the normal mode of failure is for the breaker to catch fire and cause a short.
The breaker fitted should be a DC circuit breaker. They are easy to tell which is which. A DC circuit breaker has magnetic arc guides fitted so a magnetic screw driver would stick to the breaker. AC ones don't. This issue has been reported to the vehicle inspectorate using the defective vehicle web page twice but as yet no recall has happened.
The other big flaw is that there is no safe slow speed control. On a petrol scooter and motorcycle you can use a combination of throttle and rear brake to control your speed when manouvering. This is not possible on the E-Rider model 30 city.
Then there is the other issue, customer service
E-Rider LTD does not do PDI or quality checks prior to delivery of their new and 'new' bikes. It's not on their terms page but if you look at the lease agreement pdf it states that they themselves do not do checks for roadworthyness, defects or quality that is down to the manufacturer not them. They also state when you accept delivery it is assumed that by accepting delivery your bike is perfect.
If you buy one of these bikes you are going to have to fully inspect it prior to accepting delivery, otherwise you will have to go through the same 7 months of hell I experienced trying to get my money back on a unroadworthy, poorly assembled moped. I won my simple procedure by default but as yet have been unpaid. I disposed of my 68 plate E-Rider model 30 city moped for £50 spares or repair.
I agree with this I heard about these previously and since chose to buy the Eskuta albeit there sx250 pedal bike 15mph not even the similar issue equivalent erider models . The Eskutas look less real moped like Vs eriders are built assembled in UK with full spare parts available , 1 year / 5000 mile warranty good customer relations office dept in Nuneaton and also PDI on delivery . Brilliant little bike. Will you be taking it to EV meet in Coventry James. ?
I'll see what I can do, it on loan only. However, the owner may well take it 👍🏻
So if I did my CBT I could use this? Does it count as a 125 cc?
How can I derestrict I have the same bike but mines only going 20mph is there any upgrades I can buy like a controller or anything?
Try looking at the back left of the scooter, behind the panel in the wheel-well. on mine there is a little cable you can unplug to disable the limiter.
I got one 2021 it very good
it gets me that they say that electric is a priority to cut pollution which is fair enough but if it was that much of a government priority they would plough more money into ways of making it more available . i live in a 2nd floor apartment in surrey and in our communal car park electric charging is not possible ,in fact wuthin a 5 mile radius i would say there is less than 12 public poinfs
This sounds like a great eBay find. The spare battery alone must be worth about £400?
It is a bargain, and the spare battery was £200, cheap as chips 👍🏻
@@Jamesandkate How is it holding up?
I call this a very fast bicycle that you do not need to petal and can carry stuff.
Nice report. :)
want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
James, you kept reading the km/h as mph.
How much does it cost a new other replaced battery? So it takes around 6 to 7 h? To be charged?
£200 for a new battery
@@Jamesandkate so you bought the batteries and the moped was free😀. I have got to say that £200 for the battery is very cheap compared to electric bicycle batteries. Where can you buy them?

This appears to be a E Rider Model 30 City. £1295 new on E rider's website
yeah, considering it's a review, it would have been useful to say what actual model it was - but i think you right, it the 30 city -but that said the girl said it was a 1500w motor, where as spec of the 30 is 2000
You will have to do another test where you run it right down.
We still have it, so we just might 👍🏻
Very nice. How does it do climbing hills? If you live where there are a lot of steep gradients, I guess it's going to be very slow and the range may be considerably reduced.
Will you be looking to get your CBT or full bike license in the future Kate?
I'm not sure, we used to have some big bikes but when Florence arrived it changed things.
James and Kate yes I sold my Yamaha TDM 850 when my daughter Millie was born. Too many idiots on the roads trying to kill you.
Why couldn’t they make it look more attractive?
Looks great, what’s the insurance like?
Martin Collins £330, and I have no NCB at all
Who are you insured with? I can't get any good quotes for my son 16 their party only ? Thanks....
What is the name of it or do you have a link??
It's Dora E-rider 1200 👍🏻
sorry to be a nay sayer but 30mph is too slow. Having driven mopeds many years ago 30 was too dangerous needs to keep up with traffic 40mph would be better. How many recharge cycles? how much to replace battery. If you are going to do a review these are the sought of questions that need researching
Or like a bicycle you just hug the side and let cars drive passed you. I call this a bicycle that you do not need to pettal and can carriy stuff.
But if you need a CBT and such then what's the real point of this ? You need insurance and possibly a mot, at that point Mise well just get a 125cc or 50cc
Do u need a license or mot or insurance what's the deal is need to know please

@@Jamesandkate Just outside Coalville but originally from Newbold Verdon. Used to park up near Far Coton and walk the canal both ways. Nice and quiet around there.
All EV car drivers are thinking ... So when the battery is flat you just change it and carry on? WTF why can't I do that? and that's my issue with EV cars why can't they. I know they are more complex and have much heavier battery packs but it's not impossible.
Absolutely 👍🏻
Better place with renault fluence but they went bankrupt.
@MegaTabetha No it's not impossible it's just a matter of designing a process to do it
@MegaTabetha OK as if to prove a point latest episode of The Grand Tour Neo EV9 super car has plug-in batteries Also the 40 min charge time is only that providing there is an available charge point if you have to que then it could be 80min or more and I think your missing the point of EV cars which is not to save you money but to save the planet
@MegaTabetha In some cases yes but certainly not the vast majority EV cars are simply not convenient enough for that. Have you tried commuting on public transport? it's a joke
400 for e-moped... then we have 1000+ e-bikes. Just how is this possible ?
1,2KWh? that's like batteries in those drones Wendover Productions talked about recently :) The ones they use to deliver donor blood in Rwanda
could easily fit a 3kwh battery into this :) as well as a new controller with increased peak power for much improved acceleration and top speed
These bikes are everywhere in China, so I am sure they have worked out bugs after the first 100 million units, lol
Only 4 of these left currently on offer as we are upgrading to a new model with a 3000W motor

Could I buy it off you😂
30 mph too slow.cars would be on your bumper.
It pushes 35 😁
Most roads in built up areas are 30mph and 20mph these days. I know car drivers tend to break the speed limit but I don’t. I rode a YZF-R125 for 5 years before I sold it and got a Prius - I always look out for 2 wheeled riders regardless.
However, this may we’ll be the first pure EV I might purchase. Better than a pedelec.
Accidents happen, but a CBT teaches you to avoid them.
Always have a personal video recording camera on you when riding. Very useful for keeping 4 wheeled idiots at bay - or for prosecuting them afterwards, if they misbehave! 😊👍
bring back the 2 stroke !!! and let's forget the climate change lies
2 stroke lost competitiveness against 4 strokes decades ago lol.
looks absolutely CRAP
Kate doesn’t have a “CBT or full bike license”. What’s a CBT? Pretty sure it’s not Cognitive Behaviour Therapy....
Compulsory Basic Training. You have to take a course and pass a practical test on motorcycle riding before you are allowed to have a learners license. You are then allowed to ride a low-powered bike for up to a year to learn. You can take the full test at any time during that year and if you pass you then get a full license. In the UK learners can ride alone after doing the CBT and passing it. The CBT is a way to mitigate the risk of letting all sorts of new riders out on the road. The course is mostly practical - ensuring that people can control the bike, do emergency stops, get the signals right, ride slowly without being unbalanced etc etc. After the instruction you go out on the road with an instructor who checks that you aren't a total idiot, can handle roundabouts and so on.
@@timmurphy5541 The CBT is valid for two years. Also if you have no intention of gaining your full motorbike license you can just do the CBT again, and again, and again.
