We had a customer in our store who bragged that he knew all about Spanish wine because he'd been to Spain. I think it was Total Wine who riffed off this in some of their commercials, and when I brought up "La Rioja", I got a deer in the headlights look. This is also a customer who had fancy clothes and a fancy car, trying to impress us, while his credit cards were regularly declined, likely due to being maxed out: We dubbed him "Three Times Declined" after one incident.
I really don't care what people drink with their food, but when you're fancy pants and you're trying to show off your alleged knowledge of culture, pairing a white zin with your pasta with red sauce just makes you look funny to people of Italian descent, and it only goes downhill if you struggle with your Italian pronunciation (Ordering "cannoli" for your meal instead of "cannelloni" is one I've seen plenty of times.).

I've only ever returned wine at a restaurant once. We ordered a white wine a step or two above the house white. When we poured it it can only be described as the smell from a dirty mop bucket and the taste was just not right. The waitress and manger came over and tasted it and their faces cringed, both apologised and gave us their most expensive wine as an apology. We said they didn't have to, but they felt bad considering how bad it was.

I have to explain this to people literally every day, I offer a taster not to see if you like it, it's for you to see if it's corked or not. If it's a wine we do by the glass, I can take it back if you don't like it, if it's a wine we do by the bottle, you're paying for it..

if you are going to drop that much money, you want to make sure its corked and you want to make sure its actually good.....stored correctly and all that.
Makes sense to offer a new bottle if it has gone bad for that price, but its easy to see how its more of a "lets make the customer know that they are dropping money on something good before they start complaining and get cheap" sort of thing, just to get out of paying.

There was an episode of Sanford and Son where Fred was trying to get Aunt Esther and Uncle Woody back together, and as part of the romantic dinner he put arranged, he served up a bottle of wine whose name Aunt Esther pronounced along the lines of, oh, "J.C. Piné". That would have been perfect for this couple.
