There were six brothers total (Jack, Kevin, David, Mike, Kerry and Chris). They combined Mike and Chris into one story.
I love listening to you two talk about movies. I don't even watch most of them, but when you guys review, it's like listening to a friend telling me about a movie they saw. I especially love watching reviews on movies you guys hated 😂😂
Same same same!!! 😊
I wholeheartedly concur!!
I started watching you guys last night and proceeded to binge a bunch of your reviews. The way you two go back & forth, retelling the story of the film ,is definitely like sitting around in the living room having some wine and you’re telling me about a movie you either love or hate!
It’s fabulous & unique; definitely a different way to do this.
Next I’ve got to check out the podcast!! Is it also about film?? This inquiring mind wants to know!
♥️♥️♥️
I loved LOVED this film. Initially the only scene I felt iffy about was the afterlife scene. It felt completely different than the rest of the movie in tone and style. However, when reflecting further I’ve decided that this is not only likely the point (since the world of the Von Erichs is really nothing but chaos and intensity and control), but it also felt like a tremendous kindness to the actual survivors and family of these people. Rarely does it feel like a biopic is considering the family who remain and who are watching along with the rest of us. I thought it was deeply compassionate to include.
Yeah, it is a beautiful reunion that the audience can wonder about and get some hope from.
After I watch a film, it's becoming a tradition for me now to watch your take on it. Nice discussions :)
I really am sorry to the people next to me who had to listen to me ugly cry during the second half of the movie, especially towards the end when my nose got so stuffed up I couldn’t breathe.
Yeah, I cried too. Such a sad story.
Thank goodness I watched this alone! What Kevin went through is just about the worst thing I can imagine.
Just watched the movie...I've been a wrestling fan for years and the Von Erich family has always been intriguing. this movie CRUSHED it. Absolutely phenomenal. Oscar worthy performances throughout. Zac Efron has come so far in his career. I've become a real fan. A24...keep em coming !!!
I went and saw this today as a last resort, but I really enjoyed this movie. I felt extreme anxiety as the brothers began to die off. I can’t understand how cold the parents are through the deaths. When the youngest brother kills himself I can’t see how the mom has the nerve to cry when she was so lacking in support when he expressed fears. It also appears that the parents (the father) stole from his son’s.
I wish the brothers had the strength to tell their parents to go to hell.
Oh yes. The final scene was so moving and lovely. I loved how the two little guys loved on their dad. It was beautiful.
I think the mom could be so distant because it’s said she was devastated by the death of that first son, who drowned as a kid in a puddle of melted snow after being electrocuted. I think he was 6. Perhaps she built a wall around her heart, which, frankly, could also explain how a mother could endure the deaths of so many sons.
But irl she really wasn’t distant.
Omg that's a horrible death! Poor kid
I'm happy for Zac Efron, he's really coming into his own as an actor it seems. Thanks for the review!
Yeah he just recently received a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame 🌟🎉
Him and Zendaya escaping after being Disney stars warms my heart
That jawline of his has certainly changed. [Cough-cough, HGH, cough, cough]
The sad thing was there was a younger 6 brother who was small tried to wrestle broke bones, and also took his life. The movie left him out because there was too much already.
I can't wait to see this movie. For reference, check out the Dark Side of the Ring episode: S01:E04 - The Last of the Von Erichs. It's gut-wrenching so have the tissues ready.
Yes, a very well done documentary episode. I think all the dark side docs, vice have done, have been good. They've done dark side of the 90s. Dark side of 2000s. Dark side of comedy. Dark side of football. And others i cant think of. All very well done. And lots of cautionary tales. 🙏✌️
@cobrakaicyberdon I just watched a few of the 2000's last night actually. I try to keep up with them when I can.
@@TechnicJunglist yh they're pretty interesting. 🙏✌🏼
VERY good series. And I've never been much into wrestling.
I like when Nick announces the title of the movie dramatically.
So you like when Nick announces titles. 😂😂 cuz they are always dramatic
@@ElliotStevenKATZ When Nick is dramatic...it becomes comedic! 🤣
Same!
I watched the Von Erics wrestle on TV every Saturday night when I was a kid, it was the best wrestling still to this day. Happy they got Zack to play Kevin , and they guy casted as Fritz is spot on. I hope I like it. Did not know the sad story behind the family. Would of loved if Gentlemen Chris Adams had a cameo in it.
This movie was absolutely fantastic…. It packed a lot of emotion.
there was another brother in real life not mentioned in the movie chris von Erich
It’s pretty funny hearing two guys who know zero about wrestling talk about it. I enjoy your film breakdowns and you both are very good at what you do but I laughed every time you said something about them “playing”wrestling. Example: he played in the WWF.
There were a few examples like that but they just added to the charm of the breakdown. Thanks a lot guys and keep up the good work
And from what i understood they cut one brother Chris from the movie who also committed suicide
Zac needs a nomination , he was good and had an Interesting transformation . The movie was sad story …
I trust your opinions a million more times than the Academy
Per ya'lls review I checked this film out and I actually loved it! Beautiful writing and symbolism throughout - I think the cinematography and Zac's performance were standouts
Love hearing your thoughts, as always! I found it disappointing that many of the most pivotal parts of the story took place off-screen. Kerry finally winning the championship and all the deaths aside from Kerry's were all moments that were sort of thrown away. I still don't know what exactly happened with the youngest one (suicide, we're told, but the details are vague). I was also frustrated that Zac's character specifically had the opportunity to prevent his brothers' deaths but in each instance, he didn't act on the warning signs. Overall, it was well-acted and beautifully shot but pretty grim. Thanks for your review! Love your channel!
We do see what happened to the youngest brother though. He took a whole bunch of pills and then went out into the wilderness to die so that no one would be able to find and maybe save him if he was in the house.
Personally I think the film intentionally chose not to show the moments of death of each brother in order to protect the viewers from the full horror of it and because it's basically told from Kevin's perspective.
glad to hear that this is good ... looking forward to it
iirc, regarding the boat scene, I think it's supposed to be a reference to the fact that the final brother to pass away mentioned in the days leading up his last one, he could hear the voices of his already deceased brothers calling to him from beyond the grave.
I wanna see this, I'm glad you guys liked it, I agree with most of your reviews so I can't wait for this
15:00 That's an excellent editing observation! Some parts of that afterlife reunion scene could play better at the beginning.
I was confused too after seeing the family’s real photo-there were 6 boys.
Wow. I saw a documentary about the von erichs, and I wondered were they cursed?. 🤔...But, ultimately, I think they were very dysfunctional, with a massive dose of bad luck. I can't wait to see this film. Good review as always.
Damn, maybe they were cursed
I think siblings become closer when they have a common enemy with their parents. My mom and her only sister (my aunt) are like that because my grandmother is a bit of a B. 😅
Kevin Von Erich wrestled at 6'2" irl but was billed (announced in-ring) at 6'3", which happens a lot w pro wrestling (part of creating larger than life characters), so maybe it was just a gentle joke considering Zach Efron's 5'8". Thanks for this review; definitely sold me on the film.
Lip playing Kerry just doesn’t look right to me. Kerry was built like the Incredible Hulk. I know he’s a great actor to pay tribute to poor Kerry.
Height is easy to fake on screen. Danny Trejo is 5’6” but in some of his roles, he looks gigantic. Besides, I’m sure the filmmakers preferred getting actors to bulk up instead of having to teach bodybuilders how to act.
@@TrevyTrev-andTheFunkyPetsit was a little unrealistic to expect Jeremy White to put on 80-90 pounds of muscle in the few months between when The Bear wrapped and Iron Claw started shooting.
@@bobcobb3654they didn't do a good job of it. When all the dudes are in the ring Zac and Jeremy look like children.
ive seen danny trejo in person and even that height isnt true. I'm5'3 and he is shorter than me..like 5 2@bobcobb3654
Watching Docs about the family has been interesting, so I'm interested in this . Thanks for the review
I was curious about this film. Thank you for the review. Will check it out!
Can't wait to see it. But there's actually a 6th brother the movie doesn't seem to include. Which is fine, he passes in his early 20s I believe.
Yea Chris he had fragile bones and asthma and wanted so bad to be a wrestler but he just couldn't do it he ended up committing suicide and died in Kevin's arms
@@ryankeefe2102that’s awful
Too bad Fritz didn’t understand that his sons could of handled the business side also.
@@TrevyTrev-andTheFunkyPets I heard in the movie they portray Mike more as a musician which he may well have been I heard he was always more into the production side of wrestling but when David died fritz ever the concerned father....went well we need a 3rd Von Erich Mike you're going to wrestle
the way I've been waiting for this review to come out. glad to hear it wasn't a flop bc the trailer had me questioning. I like Zac a lot so I'm happy, but this subject matter sounds devestating.
Wow the father sounds absolutely horrible. All his sons except Zac died because of him. It’s all the fathers fault partially the mothers fault as well
I was there when Kerry beat Ric Flair!
I’ve seen a couple of interviews with Kevin. He calls his father Fritz, but he talks about his Mom with love and affection.
The one brother actually probably died from an overdose in Japan. Some of the wrestlers found him and cleaned up the scene. Its not official but thats what really happened according to the guys who found him! It was accidental probably!
As a lover of wrestling, I can tell you that the iron claw was a legitimate move. There are videos of their dad practicing it on watermelons and their dad would easily crush the whole watermelon. Also their oldest brother didn’t die as a baby, their brother died as a child by electrocution on a snowy day.
I can’t wait for you guys to review this movie and color purple so excited! Definitely turned on my notifications for when you guys dropped the reviews!
From what I understand, David was the best of them all. Kevin was good, but worked way too stiff. Kerry was the one who looked like a Greek god.
Man I really just can't get over the fact that they cut an entire brother out of this family to tell their story, another brother that tragically died, possibly the most tragically to me. It's like they're taking for granted the fact that even ONE death in a family is worthy of a movie in the first place.
Yeah when I found out Chris wasn’t going to be in the film, I was like that sucks cause Chris’s storyline could have been shown, especially after Mike’s passing, we could see how it affected Chris the most
I feel like the movie didn’t use Chris in the movie because of he didn’t actually get to wrestle that much, he really wanted to wrestle; but due to his height and asthma, and plus his bones would break, he didn’t get to have that success
@@Lboogie0711 Sure, but that's a whole opportunity the film could have explored. Seeing how his brothers' wrestling success took an emotional toll on him, and his deterioration after one brother's suicide, and then it would culminate in Kerry and Chris' last conversation before Chris walks into the woods and ends his life. That would also make Kerry's story even more emotional.
Like I don't care if it's over three hours long; if you're editing out an integral character, you're telling the story wrong imo
@@looney1023 no your right, this would have worked but we’ll never know now
Probably didn’t want to depict a person that looked like a teenager killing himself (even though Chris was 21, he looked a lot younger).
Got to see this, thanks guys.
Well done guys! You are my go to for reviews! I have no fear that you are shilling for a particular movie or studio...like some other UA-cam reviewers. Keep up the great work!
After this review I'm definitely seeing this film in the theatre. Because I need to watch something different yet also familiar.
I loved the Von Erich brothers used to watched them in the 80's wrestle it seems like that family had a cursed to me all those boys died so young i loved Kerry he was the last brother to die he killed himself i was hoping someone would do a movie about them.
Safe to say there want be a part 2!
Best part of the movie was the rick flare dance and locker room conversation
Afterlife scene at the end was really cheesy
Definitely cried multiple times and really cried the last 10 min. This felt like a mash up of the tragedy of the wrestler and the brotherly chemistry version of little women.
What’s crazy is that there is one more brother in real like who killed himself. They decided not to add him to the movie.
Can’t wait for this to play at a theater near me. Saw Monster in theaters this weekend, will there be a review?
It was actually 6 brothers, the youngest brother killed himself, Chris because he wanted to be a wrestler but was to small.
Longest?
@@ThatsJustMyBabyDaddy youngest I have no clue why it auto correct that. Lol
Jack, Kevin, David, Kerry,Mike and Chris Adkissan
This is so sad 😢
Thanks for the review.
I thought this movie was decent but corny for the first two thirds. The last third broke me. Very sad. Good performances.
FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY
Love this movie. Florence Pugh was excellent. Also, I learned so much.
Just out watching this, 2 very annoying girls behind me eating, talking and laughing 😐😡, need to see this again
There's another brother that wasn't included in the film. The youngest Chris Von Erich killed himself as well.
Now that I think about it, the Father most likely hated his Grandfather so much that he took his Grandmother's name. So the curse of being a bad father carried on anyway.
It came.from a nazi background
@@jadacampbell9331oh wow
I will go see this because Jeremy Allen White is hot
They didn’t mention the youngest Von Erich, Chris.
@Fish Jelly Fish Review was this also a segment on one of those "The dark side of the WWF or whatever!! On Vice Channel. The story sounds oddly familiar. And I DO watch those weird Vice doc series. 😅😅😅😅
I'm sure it was. The Von Erichs were huge in the wrestling world back in the 80s.
I honestly was so excited for this movie. However, after watching the movie I left disappointed. Too much was left out. We got a Wikipedia version of the story. The fact that their overwhelming problem with drugs and the fact that one of the brothers was completely omitted. It left me feeling like their story wasn't told like it should have been.
Thanks! Wrestlemania Fish Jelly style .
Thank you!
This movie actually leaves out the youngest 6th brother Chris
This sounds real good I can't wait to go see it I love Zac ❤
I agree mini series would have been great .there was a whole other brother Chris who KILLED him self too! Maybe it's just too much for one movie.THen I found out david had a son who died
I haven't seen the movie yet but I do know that there was another brother Chris who also committed suicide.
There are 6 brothers Jackie Kevin Kerry David Mike and Chris. They wrestled for World class championship wrestling which wasn't as minor league promotions the parents were Christians in Texas and Fritz von Erich was a well known wrestler in his time
Its actually 6 brothers and 5 pass
I think fritz DID love his boys he just was a hard ass and sucked at emotions
Did someone say white claw..oh IRON claw..okay. 😂 Hey Everybody ❤. Wait it's about "RASS'LIN", Paw-Paw? Let me dust off my Rick Flair+ Liberace-esque best Kimono baby!! 🍷what a treat you both are after today. *THANK YOU BOTH SO DAMN MUCH*
The movie toned down Fritz tho. He was worse than the movie showed
It's a movie about the dangers of "American Exceptionalism". They're trying to vilify the traits that made America Great.
Hurt dogs holler. Nothing wrong with how you build, but what you do with it and the others you impact around you. In other words, bad parenting. Therapy also wasn't a sought out option then
Loved this movie.
I am most probably not the 'target audience' for this story! I feel I would be 'judgemental' about the Father being a 'wordy' and 'quietly controlling' figure 😉...Both of you though, described the family dynamics in a simple way - and that, helped broaden the interest for its narrative positively☺
Von Erich 4ever 🔥❤️🔥💯‼️👏🙏👍🤘
Yea this is one of the most tragic stories in wrestling. Had they let their children love more than wrestling things would have ended different for majority
Zach busted his face open when he fell onto a marble fountain. He broke his jaw and nose. He had to have his face reconstructed. That’s why he disappeared after Baywatch. This is his first film back.
Wrestlers are known for having embellished attributes especially height.
I suggest the series The Dark Side of the Ring. It highlights the controversial and tragic stories throughout wrestling history.
Theres one brother and the youngest, Chris, omitted from the film though his story was mixed into Mike's.
Zach Efron over did it, hes more buff than the real kevin ever was lol
He didn't over do it. It was the stupid producers and the poor direction that cast He Man as Kevin Von Erich. They also cast a 5ft 7 170lbs actor as a 6ft 2 254lbs Kerry Von Erich. Crap film.
zack busted chin thats way he looks like that now
Correction. There were six boys. The oldest died as a baby by electrocution, Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron), David Von Erich (Harris Dickenson), Kerry Von Erich (Jeremy Allen White), and Mike Von Erich (Stanley Simons), and Chris Von Erich who isn't in the movie but he was also a wrestler and that also ended his life.
The story is definitely a tragedy… Zac looks really bloated from the training . I do look forward to seeing this film. The backstory is just awful…
Kevin was lean and built like a swimmer, Kerry was built like the Hulk. I have to remind myself they are more focused on acting paying tribute
This seems way too hetero for this queer, glad ya’ll enjoyed it.
