Milk crates seem like a good idea until you go the the local hardware store and find plastic boxes that carry more, with a lid, that are fairly waterproof and stuff doesn't get either get caught in the openings on the side or just falls out of. All for about 8 bucks.

Yes, many newer models have learned to recess the optical for this very reason or have it sideways mounted. A sound bar will be added since ultra thin TVs generally have ultra bad speakers.
