      Couldn't agree more. Finrod battled with a fully powered Sauron. Sauron was never as powerful without the Ring after his body was killed in the Akallabeth. When Elrond and Galadriel faced him in Dol Guldur he was without the Ring. As we know, on its creation he invested it with a lot of his power so his spirit form was not the all powerful Sauron faced by Finrod. Incidentally, Sauron was not able to devise Finrod's identity so he was not entirely overcome.

    Everyone forgets what Galadriel did when Eorl and the Rohirrim rode south to the Field of Celebrant. She sent a glowing mist that pushed back all the dark fogs of Dol Guldur AND she healed all the horses and men of weariness so they could ride full speed and get to Celebrant in time to save Gondor.

    • @armygrunt13
      @armygrunt13 2 роки тому +21

      That would have been a nice addition to the films; even just a brief shot of the Rohirrim riding along and Théoden commenting on the increased speed and stamina of their mounts, with an image of Galadriel working her magic. Heck, as powerful as Elrond and Glorfindel were, Tolkien himself did state that Galadriel was the most powerful elf still alive during LOTR. It think it also speaks volumes, the fact that those on the list who were arguably stronger were long since dead by then.

      @@armygrunt13 I think that may have been a directorial choice to make men seem like a more powerful force... by the end of the 3rd movie we're led to believe men are the driving force.

      @armygrunt13 2 роки тому +4

      @@tomfrost6049, fair points. I do think the films did dirty by the soldiers of Gondor, though. Seriously, in all the fight scenes they look weak and pathetic, losing one-on-one fights with orcs much smaller than them, despite being supposedly professional soldiers wearing full-plate armour! Regarding the elves and Helms Deep, while it's not in the books, I did like Haldir and his company turning up for the battle. Not sure if any survived, though two of them do drag Gimli away when they were being overwhelmed, plus you can some of them pulling back into the keep.

Before that he could easily take on multiple Valar, including Tulkas at once. His influence reached animals, plants, men, orcs, basically everything. Now the big quiet kid goes up to the naughty kid, folds him into a pretzel and drops kicks him off the map for several millennia.

Finally they gang-beat the naughty one with the big kid dealing the final blow(s) and triumphing over evil kids body. Nobody dared to fight the naughty one 1v1. They throw the naughty one out of the playgroud. But it turns out that it did not solve the problem, because ants and flies have been persuaded by kicked kid to mercifully bite everyone, floodlights are gone for good because little bastard messed up electrics everywhere around, and the soil itself has been poisoned. So now, everyone is genuinely scared that one day, the naughty kid will come back with even worse ideas and all of them will have to pay him and his little minions just to leave them alone. The big kid has no idea how to deal with the situation because he always relayed on others to tell him what to do.
      Of course, the naught kid was and will be the most powerful of them all, unless they figure out a way to finally separate from him. The big guy would have never been able to reach his foe alone. But he probably doesn't realise all of that because of low IQ.

    Here's an odd one, but for me my favorite Elf (after Gil-Galad) is Cirdan the Shipwright. As one of the oldest (possibly the oldest) elves in middle earth, he has played a role in the major events of everything from the 1st age onward. This is an elf whose foresight is on par with Elrond, who fostered Gil-Galad into the leader he was, who passed the ring of fire to Gandalf, and who either guarded, or preserved countless Eldar lives while holding the gray havens for millenia. That's not even considering all the battles he took part in.
    I'm aware that his personal exploits are somewhat sparse, but the fact that he was instrumental in the survival of men and elves in every age can't be undersold. Maybe not one of the most powerful but definitely one of the greatest leaders of elfdom east of the sea.

      Cirdan IS the oldest Elf in Middle Earth by the third and maybe the second age he’s a couple thousand years older then Galadriel. I’d also say he’s wiser than Galadriel as well the instant he seen Gandalf he knew he was a Maiar and gave his ring up to him. It took Galadriel thousands of years and a face to ring encounter with the ring of power to prove she was over her selfish ambitions and pride.

      I am pretty sure that Celebrimbor gave The Three Rings to Galadriel, Cirdan, and Gil-galad at about the same time. I have never heard or read of him being hesitant about giving a Ring to his cousins Galadriel. She must have gotten Nenya first since she lived the closest to him.
      As for Cirdan being wiser than Galadriel, that is impossible. Galadriel actually lived in Valinor in the Years of the Trees and was taught lore by Ainur. She was also mentored by Melian for hundreds of years.

His resume is so damn cool that he killed a Balrog in single combat and despite dying, he’s the only one in the elven race to be reincarnated at a short time. That says a lot as Tolkien himself was straight religious. He had both great extent of power in the seen and unseen world as the reason why the Nazgul, Sauron’s greatest chiefs feared him. In the book, “The Fellowship of the Rings” as Glorfindel was searching for Frodo he came face to face with 5 Nazgul and instead of confronting him they fled. Remember that it took only 4 of the Nazguls to chase Gandalf himself. Even the Witch King of Angmar himself fled mid-laugh when Glorfindel arrived with the hosts of Rivendell. His help with the battle of the Last Alliance secured the Elves and Men’s Victory. Also take note that his addition to the FOTR alliance alone could cause distortion to the secrecy of the fellowship. For those wondering about Luthien’s inclusion, she was a unique creature, a hybrid unlike any other. But obviously a being of tremendous innate power as evidenced by the story. More to the point, I always wondered why Morgoth had such great fear of her mother, Melian. Though Tolkien left no question as to the immense power of Melian, she was a Maiar spirit, after all. How afraid of her could Morgoth, mightiest of the Valar, have been?
    Yet, for Tolkien, power was often fluid and nuanced, depending upon the beings in question. He was adamant that, in some ways, the High Elves (like Feanor and Galadriel and Fingolfin, etc.) as Firstborn of Illuvatar, possessed some Arts and Powers that even the gods (Valar and Maiar) could not equal or duplicate. That attests to Tolkien’s respect for the unique qualities native to some of those entities Illuvatar called-forth in His own, secret mind, according to his plan. He even said that some of the Maiar (not all) “well nigh approached the Valar in power.” Sauron must surely be included in this group, and Melian as well.
    Thus, while no created being in existence was more powerful (all-around) than Morgoth, Manwe, Varda, etc., a few of the Maia could achieve unique feats to equal them in certain cases, and even a few of the truly High Elves (Feanor, Galadriel, Fingolfin, Finrod, etc.) also possessed individual Arts that could, in unique instances, equal or best even the gods. Fascinating interplay of characteristics that reveals Tolkien’s respect for the master-designs of his Illuvatar figure in terms of the wholistic purpose and plan for Creation.
    For my money, Tolkien asserted point-blank on two or three occasions that Feanor and Galadriel were equals in power and Arts among all the High Elves, though their endowments were different, i.e. their specific talents differed in style but not in potency. That settles it for me. And Galadriel was the last to survive, triumphant over all Evil that haunted Middle Earth, due to her greater wisdom (as Tolkien also emphasized) so I’d rank her first among a few equals in “Elvedom”.

      @@ramsayburch6738 Unfortunately, if based on the books Legolas is pretty decent for an elf. He isn’t exactly as great as depicted in LOTR movie trilogy since Tolkien really underdeveloped his character. It was supposed to be Glorfindel to go with the fellowship but then Tolkien decide to change it. But,,, I do believe he has a great skill of combat too, since he is after all Thranduil’s son. Legolas is clearly belong to a list of great character. His great achievement is his friendship with Gimli, the dwarf than even the Valar let Gimli went to Valinor with him in the end. So yes, Legolas might not be the strongest elf in middle earth, but he is clearly one of the greatest.
      PS : Legolas is also my favorite character in third age. Coz he is so innocent and quite clumsy in the book. Doesn’t really feel like he is other worldly creature like any other elves 😄

    If we're looking at pure potential, nobody can beat Feanor:
    "Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind; countenance, understanding, skill, and subtlety, of all the Children of Ilúvatar. However, in his personality came flaws, foremost among them selfishness and pride, and at a time these would bring anguish and turmoil to his people."

    Power was not only physical strenght and fighting skills. As a whole, taking into consideration everything "plus what Tolkien actually wrote" the list would he
    1. Luthien
    2. Feanor "described as the greatest of the Elves of Valinor
    3. Galadriel
    Besides them I think it's a matter of personal opinion.
    Now if it's just physical power and combat skills, for me "personal opinion" the list would be "I am not including any of the vanyar for we don't have anytying on them during the war of the wrath, but I am sure many of them were great Warriors"
    1. Fingolfin
    2. Feanor

      Actually the GREATEST of the Eldar was given to Luthien, while Feanor and Galadriel came second.
      In terms of overall power, Feanor is the most potent of all Eldar/Children of Eru:
      "For Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind: in valour, in endurance, in beauty, in understanding, in skill, in strength and subtlety alike: of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and a bright flame was in him."
      “Aulë nameth Fëanor the greatest of the Eldar, and in potency that is true. But I say unto you that the children of Indis shall also be great, and the Tale of Arda more glorious because of their coming.”
      “The cause of her weariness she believed to be the bearing of Fëanor, great in mind and body beyond the measure of the Eldar.”

    I miss Finrod Felagund and Luthien. I think all beings in Middle Earth have two components, strength and power. Strength is given by physical strength and dexterity in combat, and here elves and some people, such as Turin, overcome elves. Power is given by Elf, Maiar and Valar. When Finrod Felagund fought the songs of Sauron, they fought together with power. And when Sauron was defeated by the dog Huon, he was defeated by force. So in terms of power, I think the most powerful Elf is Luthien, who was half-maia. Fingolfin was the strongest of the Elves. The blood of the Elves and Maia flowed in the blood of the people of Numenor, so unlike other people, they also had the power, for example, to heal.
    The strongest of the people, in my opinion, were Turin and his father Hurin, who fought to protect the elves' retreat against the Trolls and is described as the greatest human warrior.

    • @maglor2414
      @maglor2414 2 роки тому

      Fingolfin is strongest elf for sure. I think Feanor and Eol are close too, as they were described as mightiest.
      Luthien is most powerful because of her ainu heritage, but Feanor is close second, if not surpassing. He has invented palanthirs and silmarills. Silmarills are one of if not the most powerful and magical objects in Arda. Nothing cures wounds caused by them, the only way is to change body or destroy silmarills (but they are indestructible). Angmar mages used shattered pieces of palanthirs and learned magic like that.

    Its a bit tricky criteria to base powerlevels on.
    Yes Fingolfin probably was the most powerful "battle character" we know of from the elves... but he would never have been able to create the Silmarils and Feanor did hold out alone against almost the entire Angband host before saved by his sons for HOURS.
    Also what of someone like Ingwë, who having lived with the chief valar and being of the first generation of elves must have had a certain level of power despite never going into battle that we know of.
    So... I guess my critique would be that the criteria is a bit lacking in my opinion.

      Leaving that aside it is doubtful if there even was a fight at that point. He spoke to Melkor in the door and it is not mentioned that he was armed or armored in anyway.
      That said: whatever the case with him my quibble with this video is by using pure battle prowess as a measure of power levels.
      By the time of the duel Fingolfin was not a king living in the peace of Valinor, but a trained skilled and very experienced warrior having fought the war of the jewels for more than 450 years.
      Plus his mental state at the time have to considered. He was described as basically out of his mind on grief, and such people can do much that others can't even if it doesn't end well for them.

The banishment of the Necromancer (as Sauron was known at his Dol Goldur days) was not by Galadriel but by the White Council which besides Galadriel consisted of Saruman, Gandalf and Elrond. Galadriel herself never had the power to confront Sauron on her own in combat though she managed to conceal Lothlorien from his prying Eye.

    While I DEFINITELY agree Luthien belongs on the list. However people keep saying she sang Morgoth to sleep, which isnt true. Her singing was a distraction and a tool for her dancing. While she danced she used her enchanted cape to put him to sleep. She sang Carccharoth the werewolf guardian at the gates of Angband to sleep. If we're going to make these arguments let's at least keep the stories in their proper context.
    As for the argument that Luthien is "half Maia", she is still considered ELF. Her father Thingol was an elf, and though Melian was Maia, she was bound to the elven form she had taken in order to live on earth, which makes her an ELF.

    Number one spot is tricky and an argument can be made for Fingolfin for sure, but not including Luthien and Earendil is hard to justify in my opinion.

      Earendil automatically wins for most powerful man.

      Actually Earendil is half man and half elf, but as the captain of a ship that sails as a star he must be an elf because he lives forever.

      When Earendil defeated Ancalagon was it before or after he was given the choice to become an Elf?

    I think this is a good list. I would also include Luthien and Finrod. I am sure there are a lot of other powerful Elves, like Celeborn or Cirdan, but there are not any instances you can point to that demonstrates their power.

    Quite correct and for the right reasons.
