Besakih Temple, Bali🇮🇩 The Largest and Holiest Temple in Bali (4K HDR)

Besakih Temple (Pura Besakih) is Bali's most important, largest, and holiest temple. Known as the "Mother Temple" of Bali, it is located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung (Gunung Agung), the island's highest volcano. This temple complex comprises 23 separate but related temples, with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung.
Visitors to Besakih Temple are immediately struck by its grandeur and serene beauty. The complex is situated at an altitude of around 1,000 meters, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding rice paddies, hills, and streams. The terraced layout of the temple, along with its tiered roofs, creates a picturesque and spiritual ambiance.
The main temple, Pura Penataran Agung, features seven ascending terraces representing the seven layers of the universe in Balinese Hindu cosmology. Each terrace is adorned with intricate stone carvings, statues, and gateways, showcasing the rich artistry and craftsmanship of Balinese culture. The temple complex also includes other significant temples, such as Pura Batu Madeg and Pura Kiduling Kreteg, each with its unique architecture and significance.
Besakih Temple is not only a place of worship but also a center for various religious ceremonies and festivals. The most important of these is the Odalan, a temple anniversary celebration held every 210 days according to the Balinese calendar. During these events, the temple comes alive with vibrant decorations, traditional music, and processions of devotees dressed in colorful ceremonial attire.
While visiting Besakih Temple, it is essential to respect local customs and dress appropriately. Visitors are required to wear a sarong and sash, which can be rented or purchased at the temple entrance. Guided tours are available to provide deeper insights into the temple's history, architecture, and religious significance.
