I know these machines don't have the performance of a modern RC buggy/truck but for me, these SRB chassis represent a golden era of RC. It is amazing to think that Tamiya designed all these metal parts into these chassis when RC was still very much a niche hobby and it was probably a big risk that they wouldn't sell enough to cover the development costs. These are engineering works of art and looking at these products even today it is easy to appreciate how good they are. It is funny that today Tamiya will give you a buggy constructed mainly from plastic parts and then you can upgrade it with metal parts.
This is 100% so true! I remember having the Rough Rider when I was around 10 or 11 yrs old, over 40 years ago and building it with my dad. He was a machinist and also car mechanic and he thought it was amazing. I love how the parts were more closely copied from real cars, even the front suspension design is very similar to a VW beetle. I have one more re-re Buggy Champ to build. I will do it in the alternative vintage blue and white scheme with paint and apply vintage reproduction decals. Similar to my red & yellow Sand Scorcher project.
Awesome video and excellent job on the restoration! Interesting to see the differences between the two side by side as well! Really interested to see what colour you choose for the body!!👍👍
Thank you! Sorry for lack of audio & format. It was put together over the last couple of months. I was coughing and sniffling due to Covid and struggling to find the energy. I’m still thinking about colour, leaning towards a metallic. Maybe light blue or burn orange…
Been there done this..! I used to do full break down cleanings on my 3 chassis all the time, had to. Living in western Canada prairie the silt dirt is like powder that would get into everything. If one didn't keep it halfway clean it would do damage to the parts. Cleaning was cheaper than replacing parts. Great visions!! 😎
@@jason.bochniak 😅 That it is..😎 Have you thought of using a 9.6v battery? We used to make our own battery packs, our local shop used to sell individual battery cells, they would even make them up for us as well. Cannot recall the charger that we used though. It was 7 cells on the bottom and 2 on the top, made for a tight fit, but it worked quite well. My Dad would drive his car next to my buggy to see how fast it would go..🥲😊
@@jason.bochniak Oh for sure, made a big difference. Cannot recall the details of the each cells, but well worth giving it a go if you have a local shop that still does that kind of work. 😎
Beautiful build 😎👍🏻 Well done sourcing your new body too, they’re so hard to come by. Incidentally, are you aware of any rear wheel differences between the MKI and the MKII, or is it only the fronts that vary ?
Thanks mate, appreciate the positive comments. Yes I was lucky to find the body set with decals that actually had some stick to them. I did have another MK1 body set compete with box but I let it go. Wish I’d kept it now tbh. The rear wheels are the same except for the wheel bolts. On the MK1 they were flat head and on the MK2 they were cross heads. Hope that helps.
Nice one Chief😎👍🏻 I can’t for the life of me remember whether my Ranger body is MKI or MKII now 🤔 I know the front arches differ from my original Blackfoot body though, for what that’s worth. Plus I do have a pair of the deep dish MKI front wheels which look superb. It’s just a shame Tamiya didn’t create a wider offset rear to match those wide early version fronts. I’m quite chuffed with my Ranger. I built her from very good used parts in ‘97. She’s box art and she’s never turned a wheel in anger. I probably should drive her but she’s in such nice shape I don’t want to do any damage. Only thing wrong with it is the sunroof panel is missing. Thankfully you can get smoked 3D printed versions on eBay now as I’m sure you know😎👍🏻 I’ve been toying with the idea of putting together a runner Ranger with a CC-01 chassis, all the necessary contemporary rere parts and some aftermarket decals so I can have one that looks the part that I’m not scared to drive 😆👍🏻
@@SANDSCORCHERAwesome stuff mate. If the arches differ, it’s probably a MK1 body. The MK1 measures around 80mm & MK2 90mm. If you get a chance to watch my video that came after this one about painting the MK2, I think I show the differences between both as I’m lucky to have an absolute mint MK1 too. I also did a detailed build video series of the MK1. Have you thought of doing a clone using a new re-re Sand Scorcher kit, modified Blackfoot body with the 3D printed parts, Subaru Brat Wheels & tyres and the body posts kits that are available on eBay? Would be a proper useable Ranger!
😎😁👍🏻 nice one I’ll give that a watch pronto 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 And funnily enough that’s almost exactly what I’d previously had in mind originally for my runner plan. Only I was gonna use original SRB hardware as I’ve got a reasonable amount of used but useful bits. The main reason I’d been thinking of doing a CC-01 version of late instead, was to have a more scale and capable off-road truck with readily available and affordable parts. But also to free up a chassis because I have several other started SRB projects in the pipeline, including an all MKI Rough Rider build in blue and white with period alloys. A sensitive restoration of my original Scorcher, a tarmac car, a gravel racer and a fully waterproof, lightweight beach racer for sand flats. What started as a repair/resto project of my Sand Scorcher some 36 years ago is now several cars, multiple parts and bodies including a NIB original Scorcher body, loads of aftermarket stuff, two rere SRBs and an original Super Champ kit 😆 I’m beginning to think I may have a problem 😆
Sounds like you’ve got some awesome SRB examples. It definitely is an addiction but who cares lol. I think they are cool as. The Sand Scorcher body set, so good. Have you seen my Sand Scorcher paint video, it came out really nice. The CC-01 project sounds great, I haven’t built one but hear they good fun. Email me some photos if you like, would be good to see your collection. I just started a new project today, Grand Hauler & Shell fuel tanker.
Nice to see the differences in the mk1 and mk2.
Thanks Keith, I didn’t mention the decals, I think you covered that well enough already lol!
I bought my black number 1 and one of my green number 1’s from Rob. He is the man.
Brilliant, the Porsches? I know Rob is into early kits like the Lamborghini and Porsche 934, he’s fabricated bits for that too.

Good job on restoring the chassis. Can't wait to see what color you choose.
👍👍
Thanks Ruud, I can’t wait either!
cracking detail, and close ups - always enjoy those small details you notice like the different driver heads needed between the different versions
Thanks mate, I could have gone on for hours lol!
Only just found this Gent on YT, but subscribed Immediately. SRB Man after my own heart. Excellent Work Sir :)
Thanks again Ben very much appreciated, it’s an addiction!

What a find. You are as bad as me. Got to have 2 or 3 of everything. Lol
“I had to have it” lol, I wish! I recon on a scale, you’re a 1 (being at the top) and I’m about a 500 somewhere 🤣.
