Unlike Paul I hate spending money on autos, that's why I drive Toyotas and not Mercedes. You can turn the door latch 180 degrees which will be the same as installing a new one. For the the lower guide I put each short side into a bench vice and tapped it a few times to bring the sides closer together. OOPs, too much and I couldn't open the door unless I pulled on it from the top. A few bending adjustments on it, some lubriplate and now the door is really tight. I didn't realize there was a top bumper until I watched this vid and once that arrives It'll be as good as gold. If the jaws on the door latch wear I'll just build with welding the hook latch and file it down until it's the right diameter. I'm impressed with your vids!!!!
Hey Paul great rav4 series! My daily is also a 97, 3 door rav4! My speakers are out aswell ahah. If you could do a diy on speaker replacement that would be great!
I have found that the back windows at the side have a metal holding them n place that also rattles, simply put some dampening material between the glass and the metal, and that too caused improvement
You just gave me an idea when you mentioned putting foam insulation tape on the rear door where it meets the seal to stop the rattle. I'm going to take a thin layer of that foam insulation tape and put it along the back edges of my license plate - that should stop any and all rattling coming from the plate.
You're my namesake so there's a connection right there. I had the same rattling problem with my '97 5door. The sound can be really irritating even if you put the sound system on max to drown the noise. Anyway my quick fix is just to apply generous amount of grease around the door latch and stopper mechanisms (on the door and the body). Somehow, it "softens" the rattling sound and makes it easier to the ears! Just be mindful (when cleaning the car or opening the door) to not touch these parts with your clothes or cleaning rugs because your clothes could really turn ugly.
Oh hi Paul! The grease is a good idea. Replacing the door seal is the best solution, but another easy way is to take adhesive foam door insulation from Home Depot and put it on the door where the seal hits. It won't last as long as buying a new seal from Toyota, but I'm pretty sure it will completely stop the rattle.
Same problem with mine but that weather strip price though! 😅 I'll start with securing my licence plate with extra screws before I think of importing that part. Big ups from Kenya. Really enjoyed this series.
Thanks for watching! If you want to save some money, add some adhesive foam weatherstripping for a house door or window to the back door of the RAV4. It will add to the existing worn out seal, and should stop the rattle.
Hey man, I really enjoy your RAV4 videos because I have 1998, 4 door RAV4. I would love a video on how to change the speakers on the Rav4. I really tried by myself but there are many bolts and the whole thing was designed so you don't do anything. I'm 19 years old and I really like taking out a girl I like on that car and having some 2019 sound quality instead of a 1998 one would be way more awesome.
If your automatic transmission is slipping, it might need to be taken out of the car and rebuilt. First make sure the fluid level is correct. If the fluid is dirty, you can try flushing it out and changing the transmission filter.
I like your video. I have a 98 Rav4 with the same shitty stereo and back door noise. I really like the license plate idea. I thought the 2 screws were not enough too. I'm going to try add more also.
hello my flap doesn't close as nicely as yours, maybe it's lowered, unfortunately I don't know how to deal with the hinges, do you have a video or can they be adjusted somehow?
Super helpful, Dude!! Do you have any STLs for the third brake light housing? I'm missing the interior panels for the brake light and housing and I was thinking of 3D scanning and designing some. Thanks!!
I have not designed one. That part should be easy to get from your local junkyard. If that's not an option, many auto recyclers sell parts on ebay and are willing to ship. Step 1: look for car parts on eBay. For example: www.ebay.com/itm/145193188694?fits=Year%3A1997%7CModel%3ARAV4&_skw=1997+rav4+door+panel&itmmeta=01JAPQCP3M0Z51W39H4QZSR750&hash=item21ce303d56:g:Wu0AAOSwspBkeLND&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKn09g9VXYNUbgbueYmLyGhI0grU%2BDWWhRSMqnHMBy4BG2RCj17kscm5sQ%2Bhl7cYNwHQj2WgSPS8vdxagrqRP0RAURP3MJpw3bCm0qqOD69U2ox%2FmqnwH86megApiY0GdmHyTMO%2By3cTC%2BZJ%2FH5wRiFd2lX604N4X9nSfDokQRu51uUpgtPiBm4fbGMZfiUwMiTS29anV%2B5RkR3b%2BLn6qwxrxOTrfVKLY0eRIySo3tB1Hp%2BLM4QR8guPvsYRH7lpEjf6uG9KIEbMKV3n5leR8cEaoZSIqc8%2Brnt6SrOiQ41oLg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4jistfVZA Step 2: look at the seller profile. this is Highline Auto parts in Harrisburg Pennsylvania Step 3: find them on google maps and call them: 717-558-0137 Step 4: Ask them: "can you sell me the brake light and housing and ship it?" They already ship parts on eBay, so they would be happy to send you stuff, especially without eBay keeping 15% of the money.
Can you do a video on how to replace the handle on that back door? I looked all over the Internet and I can't find a video to replace the handle, thanks.
Great series. Do you have any idea where I can get for my 2-door '99 Rav...the top plastic snap-on gap filling piece between the soft top...that rests on the top of the tailgate? It's cracked and needs replacing. Thanks!

I love you Paul and your videos too! can you help me please? my name is Óscar Francisco and have an toyota rav4 1998 five doors (AKA family rav4 ) and doesn't made signal when the right back door is opened, i checked the fuse and they a good. So the question is how can open to access the switch wiring of right back door?
thanks for all the video. I really love RAV4 first generation, watching your videos from Costa Rica. That was my first car, and it is still on my garage. I am going to replace the same parts than you in the video. I have one question, do you know that is the part number of (i dont know how to say hahaha), the plastic screw to keep the cover of the back door in its place.
The plastic screw clips for the back door panel trim are Toyota part number 67750A. When buying from Toyotapartsdeal.com you'll need to specify if you have the bluish gray or shadow gray interior. Thanks a lot.... I hve that same exact problem that was driving me nuts.... pun intended lol..... I'm gonna work on it this weeknd... thanks very much really helpful vid
Start with your maintenance. Check the spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/ajq626xx6zM/v-deo.html If you still have a problem after doing all the maintenance, check for leaking vacuum hoses near the intake manifold. This usually makes it idle high, but it's worth checking.
Hey Paul, so my 1996 2 door Rav4 was recently hit by a bus in Philadelphia. The only thing that was damaged was the driver side front panel. I found someone on FB marketplace parting their 2 door Rav4 out, how easy is it to take it off/replace myself? Love the videos, thanks!
Hi Paul, I have a booth latch that does not shut the booth door tightly. Just happened recently and as a result it is rattling really bad like a car door that is half shut. I got another door latch assembly from a friend and the door still does not shut close. So I suspect the used latch is also spoiled. So is there a way to repair the existing latch so that it can shut down tight? Or should I get a new latch? If a new latch then where can I get it online and shipped to malaysia?
I have an issue with my 98 RAV4 where every time I shut the rear door I have to slam it, usually 2-3 times. If not, it won't close completely & will shake and make a lot of noise as I drive. Neither option is palatable. Suggestions?
Check the door striker plate and make sure it's not loose, and that it's adjusted properly. Also check the latch to make sure it isn't loose inside the door.
@@LabCoatPaul That's what I ended up doing. I went to walmart and got a roll of flat braided nylon and rigged up a pull handle with it for now. Just a note, the lever has to be pushed down while unlocked to open it so the handle falls out the bottom of the door.

You can access the clips that hold the plastic cladding from inside the door. Try removing the cladding and adding some new clips or double sided tape in the loose spots.

Help! I lost the pin from my back door on my 1996 and body shops are clueless I have the pin but can’t get it back because of the spring and the back door is not secure I deliver with the food bank and need to use the back! Agghhh!
Thanks for responding! My local Toyota dealership actually used a bolt and secured the strap. $27 bucks! I will be watching your videos to take care of my girl, she’s a 96. I think it’s the first year? I love her so thank you for your videos I am waiting for the one where are you re-stuff the seats so I don’t have to get it reupholstered. Or find a new one at a junkyard? Anyway, I’m busy watching your video on changing the fluids. I’m a small older woman so I’m trying to do whatever I can in my power and my budget! Thank you again! I wish I could send pictures. She’s beautiful
Hi Paul,I'm from Philippines we exactly have the same car.Same color too. It's still my everyday partner especially that I drive it everyday to work.Just subscribe to your channel.
New subscriber here. I just bought a 96 5spd 4door two weeks ago and learned a ton from your videos. My car temperature does not go up to the middle while driving in the freeway and city but does go up just below the center when idle at parking lots. I’m guessing my thermostat is stucked open. I already bought the thermostat and just waiting for the tools that I bought so I can get in there without removing the oil filter and other parts. What do you think am I doing it right? I’m not a mechanic and just basing my troubleshooting technique through youtube videos and such. Also, do you happened to remember what is the part number or web link of the weather stripping and bump door caution? My Rav4 makes a lot of noise too coming from the rear door. Thanks a lot!! And keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching! The part number for the back door weatherstrip is 67881-42011. It's at 1:24 in this video. Yes, it sounds like your thermostat is stuck open. I replaced my thermostat in this video: ua-cam.com/video/zuK9GRQ4JlM/v-deo.html Be careful with aftermarket parts. Most thermostats will get stuck closed when they break, which will overheat your engine. The Toyota thermostat will get stuck open when it isn't working, which is much better. Also, don't buy an autozone radiator cap. They don't open at 13psi, and I got a broken radiator because I used one.
Paul Shpakov , thanks for your video. My back door rattle is 80% quieter now that I replaced the weatherstrip. Also replaced my thermostat and it was stucked open, i also replaced my pcv valve and grommet. Now mpg went up from avg 15 mpg city to 19. I know still low. Need to tackle the spark plug, wires, cap and rotor next.
The 2 door RAV4 is much less common in the United States than the 4-door. It was sold in the US only in 1996 and 1997. The rest of the first generation RAV4 (1996 - 2000) were all 4-door.
time for a sound system install, and 120 power outlet, ua-cam.com/video/riNeWn7j5Ss/v-deo.html , I'm going to also convert my headlights to a 1999 or 2000 model with HID bulb

Get yourself a single-din Pioneer. I also replaced the factory speakers with 2-way Kenwood speakers (Dynamat and Baffles too)
I wish I could get my rear door on my trooper open. It's being a super pita.
gracias por tus videos! saludos desde Venezuela!
Thank you! I hope your RAV4 runs great forever!
Are those BFG KO2’s? I’ve never seen those on a RAV4 before!
Yes, I went a little bigger than stock tire size LT225/75R16. I have a video about the tires here: ua-cam.com/video/2I2EbRZ0JDc/v-deo.html
Help! I lost the pin from my back door on my 1996 and body shops are clueless
I have the pin but can’t get it back because of the spring and the back door is not secure
I deliver with the food bank and need to use the back! Agghhh!
Is your latch broken, or are you having problems with the hinges? You can also get replacement parts from the junkyard.
Thanks for responding! My local Toyota dealership actually used a bolt and secured the strap. $27 bucks!
I will be watching your videos to take care of my girl, she’s a 96. I think it’s the first year? I love her so thank you for your videos
I am waiting for the one where are you re-stuff the seats so I don’t have to get it reupholstered.
It's still my
everyday partner especially that I drive it everyday to work.Just subscribe to your channel.
I replaced my thermostat in this video: ua-cam.com/video/zuK9GRQ4JlM/v-deo.html
Be careful with aftermarket parts.
Need to tackle the spark plug, wires, cap and rotor next.
bruh, you should do this with a Diahatsu Pyzar, mine rattles like crazyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!
I've never seen a Diahatsu Pyzar in the United States. You probably just need a new door seal like I did.
Anyone find a generic weatherstrip that works but isn’t $100??
I've never seen this model in my whole life
The 2 door RAV4 is much less common in the United States than the 4-door. It was sold in the US only in 1996 and 1997. The rest of the first generation RAV4 (1996 - 2000) were all 4-door.
the rattle on mine is from the registration plates, take it off, put some double sided tape on all 4 corners then put it back on, problem solved
it's the stereo comment for me
Part number ?
All the part numbers are displayed on the left side of the screen during the video.
wao excelente

time for a sound system install, and 120 power outlet, ua-cam.com/video/riNeWn7j5Ss/v-deo.html , I'm going to also convert my headlights to a 1999 or 2000 model with HID bulb
Head on over to @t and use code WatchJRGo for 5% off your entire order! (I'm planning to use B-Quiet or dynomat my Rav4 too and put in a proper sterio system)

Look for some junkyards and if you're lucky you might be able to find your RAV4 window. Also, join the RAV4 group on facebook: facebook.com/groups/287048125126229/?ref=bookmarks
Someone there might be able to help you.
