You can say it was an easy schedule, call it a fluke. The year before they were a bad defense, the year after they were average. But no matter what no defense will ever have a year like this again.
Hell yes. Look up "balls out, light your hair on fire and get after the poor soul with the football" in the dictionary and there will be a picture of the 1977 Falcons Gritz Blitz.
Play ALL BUMS (opposing teams offenses stunk).Did they play against Dan Marino? With Duper? Clayton? Joe Montana Jerry Rice? Tony Dorsett? Eric Dickerson? The 1985 Chicago Bears did!
@@samsonbabayan6894Good thing Jerry Glanville laid the blueprint for Buddy Ryan with the Grits Blitz. Hate all you want but there is no denying that this was one of if not THE best NFL defense ever.
@@samsonbabayan6894so the steel curtain sucks too then because they played in the same era and the 85 bears suck since they literally copied our defense and claim it’s theirs. Yeah those guys suck.
This is THE BEST defense ever in a 14 games season hands down but, no love because of the sh*t offense. Later, buddy ryan and mike ditka do a tweaked version of this with a good offense and then bam Bears win a Super Bowl.
This is pretty accurate; only good offense was the Rams who were 4th in points/5th in yards in 1977. Patriots were 9th in points/11th in yards. That's it and as you said a lot of those teams that the Falcons played had bad offenses.
Watched every game, attending many. Claude Humphrey being my favorite. And the uniforms... the best.
Falcons have a lot of great sets of uniforms, except the current ones imo.
This is the best UA-cam video on the subject. It's a shame there's not more views
That amazing secondary ripped a lot of picks!
Rolland Lawrence was a real ball hawk (#22)

Would've been interesting to see them in the playoffs if they could have gotten anything out of that offense.
@@dukewilson14 Who was their quarterback that year?
@@borood1188 Scott Hunter and Steve Bartkowski
@@dukewilson14 Oh gawd, that’s why
And this was a defense in a year where the orange crush and doomsday were getting all the headlines.
“The forgotten defense”
They knocked the snot out of Roger Staubach

How do you give up less than 10 points a game and not make the playoffs 🤣?
A really bad offense lol. They lost a game during the 1977 season 3 to 0.

Because their offense was worse than most rec league teams. They lost multiple games without giving up a single touchdown...

How the fuck is the #5 defense? Theyre #1 in all major stats. Only defense to allow fewer than 10 ppg
Vikings allowed under 10 ppg in 1969 and 1971 as well.
You have to take the competition into context. They mostly played against mid offenses
Played all bums offensive teams
Filthy 😤
They played bums! No great offenses

Their offense was horrible.
