Rebekah R I would recommend indoor extreme sports for anything they have. Their "Laser Tag" is realistic and fun. I would say it's good for someone who lives here because you don't get to shoot guns even if they're fake, at all here.

You are right about New Yorkers being friendly and helpful. I mashed up my knee when I was a paratrooper in the Canadian army. Periodically it gives out. I was in NYC on business and was crossing 49th, and all of a sudden I was doing a face plant in the middle of the street. Suddenly I was surrounded by people ....helping me up ......helping me to the curb. One guy stood in the middle of traffic with his hands outstretched to keep me from being run over. A woman was on her cell phone calling 911. She thought I was having a heart attack. Great, kind, caring folks, and they get a bad ...undeserved ....rap.

NYC is a very different place than it was 20-30 years ago. There used to be a lot of gang-related crime and some neighborhoods you wouldn't dare go into at night. Much of that is gone but the stereotypes still linger. . .
Don't go up Empire State building. Go up to Top of the rock where you will see a great view of the city, including the Empire State building

If you are on a road trip on the east coast, don’t attempt to bring your own car into the city. Traffic is terrible and divers are wreckless. Best to park outside the city and take the train in.
Not to mention the price of parking. It's outrageous...I live outside the city and always Uber in because it is so much cheaper than parking for the time I want to be there.

DO NOT attempt to rush onto the subway train before first letting people off, because it's RUDE, and the chances of getting yelled at by someone else rises exponentially. The same should always be for elevators.

I fully agree with # 6. I was there several years ago and I got lost. I had a very confused look on my face and 2 young ladies stopped and asked if I needed help and I explained I was lost. After finding out where I was trying to get to. They not only told me how to get there but they took the subway with me to make sure I got off at the right stop.Of all the things in my trip there, their help and going out of their way to help me still stands out in my mind, many years later, as if had happened yesterday.
I remember when we were trying to get to the old Yankee stadium and we got on the wrong train and ended up at the Bronx Zoo. A local saw that we were tourists and helped us out :)

Don't try to cram into the subway the second the doors open. Stand to the side of the doors and let people get off the train first.
and please grab one of the poles. They are there for a reason. My whole day goes downhill when I get slammed into by a tourist who flies around the subway car when it starts moving. You can tell the real New Yorkers because no matter how full the train is they will snake a hand to grab a pole before the train moves. In summary, grab the pole then make sure you carry hand sanitizer or wash your hands thoroughly before handling food.
However, you won't get that problem with European tourists, Eagles Fan, as most of them are natively accustomed to subways and public transportation in general.

I think people don't research restaurants ahead of time and then get overwhelmed with choices and just pick the familiar option... terrible strategy! after people, culture and art and sites, food is the best NYC has to offer
It's true about lots of free stuff to do in the City. Also check your different credit cards. My Bank of America card gives free access to museums nationwide one day a month, as well AmEx has deals (esp in NYC), so look at ALL that stuff before you go and take advantage so you at least get SOMETHING outta that 24.5% A.P.R. lol

I live in New York. You're right, we are not mean! We just have to deal with so many people all around us at all times, many of whom are completely nuts, so we keep to ourselves by default. We're a little suspicious of others because trust me...WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL and we know it's sometimes best not to look. This city can be rough on you after a long time, and it's crowded almost everywhere, so you have to be a little self-protective so you don't get annoyed with everyone. This sensory overload is rather shocking for tourists, so just imagine how exhausting it can be at the end of a bad day.
But helpful, hell yes. I love helping lost tourists! We are proud of our city and love being the ones to give you the "real" story.
katie L my wife and I came to New York thinking the stereo type, at least I did but I found out real fast that's not the case! Helped us find the best pizza and without a asking, helped up with metro. You guys are awesome! We brought our daughters last weekend and will be back very soon. I LOVE NEW YORK! Sure not all new yorkers are mean or rude but a quite few are, a few years ago I went to NYC for the weekend and had to take the subway, being the first time I took the subway I had no idea what line to take to go to ground zero, I asked one of the workers behind the counter and he literally yelled CAN YOU LOOK AT THE DAMN SIGN? Yep dont think i will ever go back there again.
To be fair, those workers behind the counter are notorious for being rude and unhelpful. They don't represent all New Yorkers so don't let that stop you from visiting again! If you're ever here and need directions, feel free to ask a local. The secret is to get straight to the point. "Can you tell me which train to take to ground zero?"
If you start off with a "good morning" or "excuse me, how are you today?" we will think that you're one of the several people who approach us on a daily basis asking for money, so we've trained ourselves to ignore most people who start speaking to us like that. Otherwise, we are more than happy to help. Sincerely, someone who lives in New York.

Subway Escalators: During rush hr, do not stand at the left side of the escalator. It’s a unspoken rule that people who are in a rush can walk up the escalator at the left side while others stand at the right side to wait. It drives us crazy when you see tourists blocking our path.
Don't EVER block the left side of the escalator. It's always rush hour in the city.
Unwritten rule, the express lane for escalators is on the left side, meaning if you want to stand still, stand on the right side
Just for that reason I'm going to be standing in the middle
Then you'll cop an excuse me, in London, Sydney, Tokyo or just about any Subway station. If I don't know when the train's coming, I fly down, till I can see the platform. No train, then I stop (in the centre, of course)

I’m a 68 year old native New Yorker and have lived there all of my life. I’ve never been to a number of the touristy places like the top of the Empire State Building and having out of towners visiting is a good excuse to go without feeling dorky.
I live in new York and the no. 1 DONT is DO NOT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTACES LOOK SOMEONE IN THE EYE ON THE SUBWAY. And don't walk through times square with ur purse open. Common sense

IF someone is stupid enough to walk through any areas with their purse open that's all on them, and as for eyeing someone on the subway for too long well there must be a horrible reason for that one. I look up at a few people and put my head down and look around at all that is near and far on the train. I have no reason to make full eye contact with anyone on the train unless I have a question to ask because I don't know who the person is and I don't wanna get a fight started.

OR I just look and see what other people are reading if they happen to have a newspaper or book up in front of them. I don't like making direct eye contact with anyone.

I have lived in New York my whole life, grew up in Brooklyn and now I live in Manhattan, close to my job. New Yorkers move with purpose, and that’s how they, they are perceived as being rude and stubborn but I have found that unlike other places, like the south, New Yorkers really value time, so they don’t want to waste it. Not saying other places waste time, they just relax more in other places.

electroox as a native New Yorker (Queens), I have only been to the museum of natural history and saw the statue of liberty from a distance. I would do tourist things but they don't seem that interesting.
electroox I would like to know myself and my partner would like to come and visit NYC etc but we plan on staying roughly 2-3 weeks. What amount would you or anyone reading this suggest as spending money and for a decent not luxury hotel for the duration of the 2-3 weeks this includes going out for drinks and dinner site seeing etc. Your reply would be mostly appreciated.
KinG_HuBli have you come to New York City yet? I will suggest visiting the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn. It's a pretty neat place to visit. While you're there, you can stop by Rocco's Tacos & then proceed to burn calories by walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. Once over the Bridge, you have lower Manhattan which has City Hall, World Trade Center, Wall Street, Battery Park as well as Chinatown & Little Italy.
Okay. A few things from someone born and raised in New York. First of all, if you really have to go to the bathroom and you aren’t near your hotel, any diner, bar, pizza place, fast food restaurant or hotel will do. They all have public restrooms. Any establishment that serves food in NY is required, by law, to have a public restroom. If they will not let you use it unless you are a customer, become one. It’s really as simple as that. You don’t have to spend much. I’ve never used a street toilet in NYC in all the years I have lived here and I never had my own hotel room to fall back on. Second, if you want to stop and do something on a street in NY, get close to the building. He’s right, don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk, you will literally get run over. There is a pace to NY streets, a momentum. You interrupt that and you can get more than yelled at by an irate pedestrian. You could get hurt. So to avoid this, go as close as possible to the building away from the door. You can also stop by the curb away from the corner. Also, be sure to ask your NYC host if they want to join you. You have no idea how many people here, born and raised, who have not been to the Statue of Liberty! The exhibits at the museums change constantly, especially at the art museums. So ask away, I know I’d rather go to the Met than go to work. Also, the Circle Line and the Staten Island Ferry are two COMPLETELY different experiences. I 100% disagree with him, there is no comparison, definitely take it if you visit NY on a warm sunny day. First of all, you get NO EAST RIVER VIEWS on the Ferry and they are spectacular. Most of the views shown on TV are not from the Hudson River side. The UN is on the East River. You will not see that on the Ferry. Secondly, it doesn’t go uptown to the Cloisters. It’s absolutely beautiful and they’re now doing so much construction on the upper west side, it’s all shiny and new. The Ferry is DOWNTOWN ONLY. So 100% completely ignore that advice. Also, don’t be afraid to try some NY food from a street vendor. About 20 years ago, they really got serious and while a license was always required, they didn’t really enforce it. Now, all street vendors are licensed by the city, it’s illegal to run a cart without one. So enjoy a sausage and peppers hero, or a hot dog, or some hot chestnuts or a pretzel, you will not get sick, but I do agree, go to people who specialize in one or two things. Don’t eat from a menu like he showed you above unless it’s a food cart, especially when it comes to Asian, Middle Eastern or Mexican food. New Yorkers are more than willing to help you he is right. But he also said we are not friendly. That’s a huge misconception. We are just in a rush. So don’t mistake brusqueness with being “unfriendly.” We are extremely friendly because we need each other. But we are also very wary because there are a lot of schemers out there. So, once we have decided you are a tourist and need our help and not going to rob us, we are going to help you if we can. If you don’t like the price and size of your hotel room, stay in Queens. It’s minutes away from midtown Manhattan in Long Island City and much cheaper. A quick subway or bus ride to Manhattan from Queensboro Plaza and you’re there. I should know, I grew up there. 😊

Another place to look for bathrooms is libraries.
There is one fast food joint on the Lower East that if you want to use the bathroom you need to get a token but you have to order something to eat or drink first before you get the token. McDonald's I think it is located on Delancey street.

I go to Times Square every few years to see how much it changes. It was a lot more interesting during the 80s and 90s when the signs were really expensive to build and maintain with all the neon lighting and there were so many independent restaurants and stores instead of Hershey's, TGIF Friday's, Applebee's, etc.
We have $1 pizza places, like 2 Bros Pizza. If you're on a mega budget, don't be afraid to try those. It's not horrible pizza, it's pretty decent enough. And if you wanna find a nice public bathroom, I would try the dept stores like Macy's or Saks Fifth Avenue. Whole Foods is also clean enough for me.

Stay away from the $1 pizza! Splurge on the $2.75 slice. Trust me it's worth it for actual cheese and sauce.
@@bschuler6216 pizza isn't worth splurging on, it's just a quick bite food. NY is full of so many restaurants and international cuisines, that's where you wanna spend more of your money's worth for food.

Nobody in New York has ever seen the sites unless it was a school field trip or they went with a tourist friend.
And the public bathrooms are great, if you, like George Kaztanza, know where to go. Mainly, go to any hotel.
He probably didn't want to make the hotels mad, but you are right! My wife and I have peed in some of the best hotels around! And in NYC, that would include the Plaza and the Waldorf-Astoria. Just walk around like you belong there while keeping an eye out for the restrooms off the lobby. Why even buy something at Starbucks when you can pee like a king at the Ritz?
I saw every sight on a school field trip with the exception, ironically enough, of the Empire State Building, which we went to see once I was moved away from the city lol.

Sam I agree agree with you there while I didn’t go to school in NYC like that I was born here and always visited and now have lived here a number of years. So I haven’t done all the touristy things some bu not all. So if a friend or family member came into the city and was really excited and wanted to do something like go to the top of the Empire State Building. I might consider doing that with them since I’ve never done it
One of my favorite memories of New York was when I was visiting with some friends and we were standing on a corner looking at a map and trying to figure out where we were. A local man, who clearly had somewhere he needed to be, saw us and overheard where we were trying to get to. Without slowing down, but with a friendly smile, he pointed in the direction we should go and told us to walk about two blocks that way. Changed my perception of New Yorkers for good, in a very positive way. :)

As a New Yorker, born & Raised, I can confirm all of this... especially #3 and #10.
1. Make sure you have a Metro Card out BEFORE you get into the station ready to swipe.
2. Don’t walk in the bike lanes no matter now pretty they are, you could get hit. No one’s expecting you there.
Also please, when taking an escalator: Standing is on the right and walking is on the left.
When in a line of people, like a deli, know what you want when it is your turn and not not be indecisive or ask 20 questions.

Don't take a stroll through Central Park after sunset.
You can certainly take a stroll through Central Park after dark. It's best to stay towards the lower end of the park and outside of the Rambles. Everywhere in the park is safe and well lit aside from the Rambles. The most dangerous thing would be the raccoons.
Don't do that unless you're up for an adrenaline rush.

I lived off of the street vendor food for years and still think nothing about buying my lunch from a Halal vendor. The food is tasty, inexpensive, hot and quick. If the vendor looks really questionable, go to a different one but don't avoid them. Pretty much all New Yorks think nothing of grabbing a gyro in a pita or a hot dog from a vendor.
I have always eaten shiskabob from the halal vendors. It's great and cheap.
Here are 3 things:
1: Stand Sideways when near the train tracks, there are some lunatics who toss people in front of trains when they pass by
2: Don’t take anything from bus tours. Most of the time, they’re expired and you just lost money, and if they’re legit, you’ll spend most of your time in traffic not moving.
3: When waiting for a crosswalk, don’t stand to close to the curb, many times, impatient assholes or fire trucks jump the curb and it’s easy to get hit

Don't eat from chain food places (mcdonals, burger king, olive garden, tgif, etc). NYC is a food mecca! Its a sin to eat generic garbage while being surrounded by amazing and sometime unique food establishments.
You just reminded me of one major irritation I had during my last 2 visits to NYC: a group of us meet up there and 1 person picks where we eat dinner the first night. OMG! He picks chain restaurants. WTF????? 😡 He's been fired from the food-picker duties. I don't come from Portland, OR to eat at an Olive Garden in NYC.

We went to New York last fall & we rented an Airbnb in Queens for $500 for the entire week. It only took us 30 minutes by subway to get to downtown Manhattan, plus we got to explore a way less touristy neighbourhood. It was great!

I spend 600€ for a 4/5 stars hotel on a park ave in May for a week. If you search long enough, you can find.

I"m a HUGE fan of staying in Queens and taking the 7 train into Manhattan. The 7 has great connections to a crap ton of lines at Times Square, and also to the Lexington Ave line (456) at Grand Central.

Don't take a crash course in how to swipe your metro card when there is a line of people behind you waiting. Learn what direction the card faces ahead of time before you get to the turnstiles.
High Peak Adventures there's even machines that let you test to see how much money your card has Practice on that.
I loved your tip about not stopping in the middle of the sidewalk. I would add that this should be true ANYWHERE you go! And ladies, DON'T walk around with an open purse. Take one that zips securely, and keep it toward the front of your body with your arm over it, preferably cross-body.
Would totally recommend checking out the High Line on the west side 👍 I'm a Staten islander myself and since it opened I always go there with friends or family from out of town. Cool way to see part of the city from a different vantage point. It just gets cold right off the water if you're not here in the summer!
As a Bostonian, I keep to myself when in NY. One whiff of my Red Sox blood, and I'm a goner. xD
They are super helpful. I once was looking at a map trying to figure something out, but I finally got it. Then this guy comes up and he asks if I'm lost, I said no, he said yes you are and made me tell him where I needed to go.

I've found that New Yorkers are actually really nice, but in their own way.
Don't ask a NYC cop for directions, information, etc., unless it's law enforcement related, perhaps. They have been the least cooperative officers I've ever encountered. (Not like Chicago cops.)

You can ask the locals directions to a place, if they don’t know tell them the street and/or Avenue they will tell you where it is. It will help you narrow down the location a lot.

I wish I had seen this before I went, just got back from New York and absolutely loved it. New Yorkers are very helpful, may be curt and to the point at times , but willingness to help, yes. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Taxi? Uber? If it's rush hour and you're in Manhattan, DON'T waste your time with any type of automobile transportation; you WILL get stuck in traffic. Take the subway. YMMV if you're in the outer boroughs, but if you're in Manhattan, the subway is the way to go.
Try to avoid traveling during rush hour if you can.
so true! Also, if you are in Manhattan, there are so many subway stops, that you will never have to walk for more than like 10 minutes to get where you want to be from the nearest subway stop. Usually, it's like 2-3 minutes.
genius11433 As someone from NJ who visits NYC fairly often... don’t bring your car to the city unless you want to pay tons of money for parking AND get caught up in traffic. Public transit in the Tri-State area is garbage when compared to Europe and Asia but it works and the subway network is extensive.

Very nice and accurate review. But one thing about the NY pizza , most tourists have no clue and I'm hoping that you yourself didn't fall for it , but MOST Manhattan pizza is GARBAGE . If you truly want Authenic NY pizza from family owned establishments that have been around for generations , you have to go into the outer boroughs . venture into Brooklyn , (and I don't mean Williamsburg, THATS NOT BROOKLYN. Williamsburg is simply for wannabes that can't afford Manhattan ) real Brooklyn is Bensonhurst , BayRidge , Midwood , Canarsie. If you want , the best pizza you ever had in your life , go to DiFara's in Midwood Brooklyn . If you happen to be in Queens , go to Rosa's in Maspeth. If in the Bronx , go to Patricia's in Morris Park.
The problem with Manhattan pizza , is there is a pizzeria on every corner , and they are all jockeying for customers , and all
paying ridiculous rents. They use the crappiest ingredients , and it's mostly just trash. Last year at a pizzeria near the WTC , I actually gave my slice back to the guy behind the counter because it was so bad. The tourists inside actually thought it wSs good lol. They were clueless. Pizza for me is like underwear. YOU are the only one can taste it when you eat it. I was in Rome last year and will be again in 3 weeks, pizza in Roma can be good or JUST MEH (there is no such a thing call bad pizza) and I don't even trust reviewers in Yelp anymore. As of NYC pizza, my suggestion would be look at the people making it. If pizza is NOT their native food, I just walk to the other pizza store. Now it can be racialist if you take it the wrong way. My point is if I want authentic Ethiopian cuisine, I don't go the the Russians who is cooking it behind the counter. If I want a good Polish dinner, I certainty would not go to the Chinese who is making it. Now these are just CRAZY hypothetical scenarios. Look at those people making the pizza, do they really eat it themselves? Grab a hot dog, kabob, or curry chicken over yellow rice from the street carts. Just delicious and especially, FAST~!
don't wear uncomfortable shoes. New York is one of the best walking cities I know of. Enjoy it by foot. But also - don't cross a street without looking first, even if you have a walk sign! Seriously.
Absolutely, and look both ways before you cross, even on one-way streets. Just as dangerous if not more than cars are bicyclists, who are notorious for riding the wrong way or running lights.

Just wanted to say I found this Wolters World because I'm going to visit Italy soon and I watched his DONTS of Italy - but as a lifelong New Yorker, I watched this video out of curiosity and I'm floored at how accurate this was. Every tourist visiting NY for the first time should watch this, its essential.
Tips: Don't stare at people. Don't step on peoples shoes. Never have a lot of cash in your wallet..don't flash your cash when paying for something. Don't act lost, always walk and act with purpose. Acting slightly disinterested in the things around you helps.

Hi! I love your videos and have found them to be very helpful. I’d like to add two suggestions that are very important etiquette in NY, both having to do with respecting personal space. The first is don’t wear a backpack on both shoulders on the subway/bus if it’s crowded-take it down to one shoulder if you can hold it close to your side, or hold it down in your front. This is so you don’t bash it into people who are trying to stand behind you, especially with something that is often sat on dirty floors. The second is common courtesy, but tourists seem to overlook it: please don’t cut ahead of or push up and crowd people in lines. You may likely get scolded, and it makes it unpleasant for everyone when people are impatient or don’t give a little respect for others’ personal space. I spent some time in San Francisco and unfortunately, these inconsiderate behaviors were a daily occurrence I was surprised to have to live with. In a city with a population the scale of NY’s, people need to respect and look out for each other so things can run smoothly for everyone. Thanks!
Some tips from a life long NYer:
If you're looking for Houston Street, in New York it's pronounced "Howe-ston" not "Hyoo-ston". If you ask a NYer for "Hyoo-ston" Street, you will get back some funny looks. This is important because Houston Street is a main artery in a popular tourist area, as a matter of fact the dividing line between Greenwich Village and Soho.
More for European tourists, especially from countries like England, Holland, Germany, Northern Europe: if you come in the summer, be prepared for the weather. It gets hot in NY, hotter than any major European city by 20 degrees at least. As a matter of fact, in talking with European tourists I've met, this is the most common comment I get. From late June to late August, the temperature will often be 90F (around 35 C) with 90 percent humidity. Be prepared for this.
Have at least an idea of NY geography. Look at a couple of maps before setting out on an adventure. Things are spread out in the city, so at least have a general idea of where things are. I've had people stop me in lower Manhattan and ask how to get to the National Tennis Center. The NTC is in Flushing, Queens, which might as well be in a different city. I knew where it was and generally how to get there, but certainly couldn't give good directions because I don't know the name of the roads or highways to take getting there. If you're looking for something in Queens, at least find your way to Queens first, then ask someone.
That don't block the sidewalk stuff is true, but sidewalks still get blocked. NYers can be real assholes, including me, but usually won't be if you're not an asshole first. Remember, if you're a tourist, you're just there playing around, and people who are actually working don't have patience for people who get in their way just playing around. You're happy & having fun while we're working and miserable, so don't expect us to be jolly if you're being an asshole and getting in our way. Also remember this when asking for directions: most of the time when a stranger tries to stop us to ask for something, they're asking for a handout and we'll just brush them off, so if you want to ask directions, at least look or act like you're not asking for money. If you get brushed off, don't assume the person doing the brushing off is a rude asshole. They might have mistaken your motive.

When my friends and I went to New York, everyone was super nice and helpful. Some random guy told us what the best and cheapest pizza place is and another guy helped me get my metro ticket to work. Complete strangers that live there can be the nicest people

I live in NYC and watched this out of sheer curiosity and this is 100% right! I particularly love the one about not making your local friends go with you to see the tourist sites! 😂 ok, here's another one that happens a lot: Please don't stop in the middle or at the top of a subway staircase to see where you are or to check your phone. Chances are, there is always someone behind you trying to get out. Oh, and if you're two or more people, don't take up the entire sidewalk when you're walking. Again, there's someone behind you trying to get to work or an audition... thank you!

As others have said: don't form conversation groups on the sidewalks and don't walk three or four abreast: you are blocking everyone and it's rude. Also don't stop at the base of subway station stairs and escalators: people are right behind you , moving fast and you could be at the bottom of a jam pile really quickly. All true for any big city, but especially NYC!
The best NYC pizza is "Naples 45" 45th st & Park ave just around the Grand Central station. They got 3 brick ovens and sell by slice $1.65 after 2pm. Cheers

I disagree with a couple of things. First of all, the hot dog vendors on the street are the best, and if you take the express train instead of the local, no big deal. Just take it to the next stop, walk over to the platform on the other side, and go back where you wanted to go in the first place. It's really easy.
John Jensen you are a local so am I, when you leave the subway if you know you get off next stop gather all your things cuz if you forget something on the subway say bye bye to it, Cuz you will never see it again.
Tim L I think all he is saying is that you are rolling the dice more with a street vendor. Is he practicing good sanitation all day long? Are the dairy and meat ingredients staying cold (if they are supposed to be) so as not to grow bacteria? Probably all food providers cheat some, but I'm sure the vendors hate to throw away food that is past its expiration. It's not like his reputation is going to be harmed by your negative review on TripAdvisor.

Tell out of towners about the letter grades in the front windows of the restaurants! I tell people to only go to "A" rated restaurants! "B", "C", and "Grade Pending" is a no-no...
I'd agree with avoiding "B" ratings unless it's Papaya Dog. "Grade Pending" is a horror story waiting to happen!
C is a failing grade
lol you do realize that all restaurants ground level are at best a B. Trust me on this one. You think theres no roaches or rats they have to deal with just because they have an A. ground level....just remember.
B grade isn't too bad, but definitely not C.
You guys need to look up why a place got a B or C. Most of the time it has nothing to do with the food. The health department will take of points of the sanitazing buckets are missing or if there isn't a thermometer in one fridge etc.

YES THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MENTIONING THE SIDEWALK THING!! IT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH!!Besides that, I just wanted to say that New Yorkers will help you. We make a lot of tourist jokes here in NYC, but in all seriousness we will be willing to help. The problem is we all have that isolated attitude in the sense that you would never catch a New Yorker waving or saying hi to people we pass by on the street. The most you would get is a nod, so the city seems very unwelcoming, but in reality everyone is open to help, as long as you ask.
For the bathroom situation. I always find that generally. McDonald's bathrooms are clean and well maintained.
Except that bathrooms are locked and you only get the code/key if you buy food.

If the establishment has less than 19 or fewer customer seats, they are not required to provide bathroom access to the public. Also, places opened/in operation before 1978 aren't even required to have bathrooms, at all. These are actual laws lol That doesn't leave many places where you can just pop in, buy a bottle of water, and use their bathroom.

jjelly koala Been living in Spain half my life, people there have no common sense whatsoever. They will stop in the middle of a busy sidewalk, and will bump into you in an empty one. Drives me nuts.
One thing I tell visitors so they get the full ramification of the sidewalk thing (because you get the "why cantcha just walk around us?"): Imagine you're back in your car-central city and you're trying to just get home. Then someone decides to stop their car in the middle of the highway. Now you're in a mess and you may not make it to your kid's recital/soccer game/important family event. People in the northeast who rely on commuter trains and there are 10,000 other people who want the empty spot on the same train. We don't have trains every 10 minutes 24/7. You miss one and it may mean waiting another hour for the next. Little Timmy's game over, sorry you missed it. THAT'S why New Yorkers get crabby sometimes!

I'm a Londoner, but one of my favourite cities outside of my own is NYC. 1 thing that does annoy me about NYC though is the damn metro-card for the subway. You either swipe too slowly, too fast. I swear I had to swipe it 3 or 4 times before it would allow me in. You soon get use to it but that can be annoying. They need an Oyster card touch and go system like they do in London ASAP. But a part from that I love NYC.
As a New Yorker trust me, we absolutely LOATHE our outdated system.
Bocchetti I heard they are updating the metro card soon, I think they're working with the company that made the Oyster card to finally bring contactless to the subway system in NYC... So perhaps you won't be suffering for too long lol
vibeuk2003, not a disagreement but rather an add on. NYC Metro Card is cheaper than London and Paris. Just a reminder, I paid more for Metro in London, and Paris than in NYC. One good thing NYC should learn is the contactless card, this is where London and Paris excel.

I wouldn't stand in the middle of a street in any city to photograph. Some more subway advice: stand away from the platform. The train won't come any sooner if you stand along the edge or keep looking into the tunnel. Keep your wallet in front pocket, knapsack or bag close to you. Unfortunately, subway crime is a reality. Not rampant, but it does happen. And if you want really good pizza, and I mean the best - you've got to go to the family owned, authentic Italian and Greek pizzerias. Most are in the outer boroughs, where ethnic neighborhoods still thrive. Those are the places where people really know good pizza. Take it from me, I'm a New Yorker, and here we are raised on pizza. Not Pizza Hut or Domino's.
I went to Brooklyn years ago and i had very good N.Y. pizza. I live in Florida and i hate to see them advertise real N.Y. pizza. What a joke! The flour the pizza is made from in Florida is treated for the tropical climate and it's definitely not the same taste as real N. Y. Pizza.
Forget the places run by Greeks; go with the Italian places.
There are still some good ones on the UES.
I definitely agree about the fact that New Yorrkers in general are helpful friendly people, but they also don't mess around or put up with nonsense. To generalize. Also in addition to not stopping in the middle of the sidewalk, don't stop at the bottom of the subway stair or escalator. It's a busy city! Step to the side or the flood of people will be coming down on you. Finally, enjoy the diversity and the food and the culture - it really is one of the world's greatest cities, and the people are a significant reason why that is the case. It might be faster paced than you might be used to, but enjoy it!

Also, I as a New Yorker love helping people if I can, but if you stop in the middle in the street or walk very slow (unless your the elderly) I will get very irritated and will start acting like a jerk cuz I need to be places, we don’t have all day!!!!
