I prefer the injection molded sheath as I live in a hotter environment. Kydex tends to melt to guns/knives when heated up, and that is a problem. I'm happy with the decision to do injection mold sheaths.
I was a volunteer on a search for a missing child last year and ended up trekking through a variety of challenging terrain, from rural neighborhoods to thick wooded areas. The two most useful tools I took were my ESEE 6 (TKC customized) and a Streamlight Pro Tac HL. I used my knife to cut my way through some seriously thorny vines, while my flashlight was invaluable when searching under crawl spaces and in dark sheds. Illumination is maybe even more important when camping, as there always seem to be tasks that require two hands and a headlamp, long after darkness has fallen. So, I would definitely pair up the ESEE 6 HM with a good quality flashlight or headlamp.
I think the Esse Junglas would make an excellent compliment to the 6HM. One to handle all the chopping and splitting and the other for finer cutting chores. Plus the look like a matching set.
You really can't go wrong with either ESEE 6, I would pair the ESEE 6HM with the Tops El Chete. The El Chete works great for big chopping tasks, splitting wood, everything you need a big chopper for, but it doesn't work well at smaller tasks, food prep, notching, etc
I would definitely go with a folding saw. It's lightweight, efficient and pairs nicely with a great blade like an ESEE 6. My Bahco is always in my pack and so far hasn't let me down.
For camping, thats actually a pretty hard question. The Esee 6HM I would probably use for more heavy duty stuff and bushcraft, paired with a Leatherman Signal for lighter duty, fire starting, etc. Great video, and good luck to everybody.
So I'm a SERE Specialist working at the Air Force Survival School at Fairchild AFB and I have been using the ESEE 6 for a while as my preferred knife. I would probably choose to pair a fixed blade saw like an ARS Pruning Saw with the 6 (or HM) just based on the function of what I do out there on a monthly basis in the forest. I love my 6 but I would definitely be interested in taking the HM for a spin to see if my fire craft improves at all. Thanks for the video!
The esee 6 hm definitely reminds me of Dave Canterburys Pathfinder knives and I really dig that a lot. I would pair it up with a bow saw either folding or non-folding.
Aside from my admittedly excessive EDC (which contains a Wazoo Cache Belt fully loaded with the Adventure Kit, a Leatherman Charge, Olight S2R, Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Schrade survival pen, Zippo with Thurnderbird torch insert, Rite in the Rain Notebook, cotton bandana, Cassio Pro Trek watch, Leatherman Tread bracelet, and 10’ 550 parachord bracelet)... I would carry my Schrade SCAXE2L for larger chopping tasks.
I dont. My woman loves an adventure. I still sometimes have to hold her purse at the mall. But she always keeps candy in it for me! As I rifle through it.
I really like the broom handle design of the HM. To carry this knife out, I would pair it up with my Leatherman Charge. This style and size knife brings a lot of capability to any load out.
But I think the absolute best thing to pair it with is knowledge of the wilderness and your skill set. So knowing what I know I would pair it with my knowledge and be able to achieve almost any project knife being the only tool. But if it has to be a physical tool, it would be my handmade bow and arrow set or hand forged hatchet. Thanks a lot good luck to everyone!
For my hunting and camping needs, I would pair the 6 HM with my Esee Izula II. My idea would be to use the Izula for my fine tasks such as feather sticks and game processing and the 6 HM for all the bigger chores around the camp. Thanks for all your great videos! I have put together quite a collection of blades and gear from your recommendation s. Keep up the good work brother!
I would pair it with a fire kit, because my two favorite things to do on a camping trip are playing with knives and playing with fire (responsibly of course). I can usually find downed trees and branches where i camp, so the ESEE 6/6HM would be enough to help my prep my tinder and then my fire kit would get the campfire started.
Hey Aaron, for backpacking (assuming a firesteel is already present) I'd pair it with a Silky or Bahco folder since this particular Esee is not the best chopper. Super light weight option for bucking up those thicker 3"-4" branches for some light batoning.
Looks like a fantastic knife. Great to see ESEE release an HM line 6. If I went on a camping trip, I would pair an ESEE 3 with the ESEE 6 HM. I would also bring a folder (probably my PM2 or Crooked River). I would probably also bring my Leatherman Sidekick, which happens to have a petty reliable saw on it for its size.
In both overnight camping and survival situations, I would always pair this knife with folding saw. A saw and a stout blade will provide you with what is necessary to survive and be comfortable in most situations.
I would pair it with my large chopper that has a ferro rod attached to it so I can get larger wood down to something the Esee6 hm can deal with and make my fire for warmth and possibly cooking.
I would pair it with a Samurai Ichiban 13" Curved Pruning Saw because for larger cuts, the saw will require less energy but the ESEE6 HM could do everything else.
Aaron, thank you for your reviews. I have purchased this knife because of your review. I am a big ESEE fan. I like that they are made in the USA. Thank you and God bless.
Had one. Paired it with a mora 511 (new style) and a Bacho. The mora is almost weightless so I never noticed it. Met someone who needed a primary knife and passed it on to them as a gift. Don’t regret it though as their enjoyment is worth the price.
I would pair it with a fine red 🍷 wine. But with all seriousness after video review and knowing that camping is what it will be used for i have several observations. 1) it is big enough to chop but with more work than wanted,2) it's small enough for things like feather sticks or curling, food prep etc. 3) it's made of 1095 a good 55/57 hardness but 1095 will rust so bring wax. Hmm, I would have to say that since it'll handle most medium to small task I would want something that would be less exhausting for fire wood prep like a folding saw which fits nicely in a pack. Whatever is your favorite.
pair it with my 22-250 Remington 780 heavy barrel 4000fps will drop hogs, small game to survive and insanely accurate up to 400 yrds. i actually own a K-BAR Turok Jaroz. NOTHING beats it. DEVILDAWGZ KNOW WHAT WERX.
Great analysis and comparison and I agree with your conclusions. That said, if all you had was the 6HM you'd be just fine. All of the HM models are sweet.
My ESEE 6 I have paired with a Leatherman Wave. I used paracord to attach it to the Kydex sheath. I would pair the HM with the same, a Leatherman Wave.
I would probably pair it with my Ozark Trail folding saw. Thank you so much for this great opportunity I have wanted to get an esee 6 for a long time and I just can't afford it and it would be so great to take on my church camping trip thank you again for the opportunity God bless you and your family
Thanks for yet another great video! I'm a fan of people who know what they're talking about when it comes to knives. You convinced me to pick up a ESEE6 today. So, even if I don't win your competition, I'll have a new knife.I would pair the ESEE6 with either my Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 or my Council Tool 24" pack axe. Thanks again!
Hey Aaron I'd pair it with a firesteel, coz if I get stuck in the woods at least I can process wood and make a fire....fire in the wilderness represents life.
I own both knives and totally agree with your conclusions. The original 6 feels like far more knife and chops far better. I found the handles very blocky at first but now love then as the flat sides give excellent control in the finer tasks. Another great review Aaron, many thanks.
I would pair it with my CRKT Minimalist fixed blade neck knife. The ESEE looks great for blazing trail, batoning, & heavy work. While I use my CRKT for cooking & detailed work. They would make a great combo.
I already own an izula 2. I love the limited EDC capabilities of the izula 2. My 9 year old son has been learning how to make fire sticks with it. I think I'm ready to pair it with a larger high quality knife like this. I thank you for this opportunity to win.
I would pair it with a Bahco Laplander saw, I known others prefer other saws, though using the 4hm with the Bahco on the AT it’s a saw that has proven worthy for myself and others my family hikes with. Thank you for the videos you provide always giving me new ideas on how to spend money. :)
I'd pair it with my hefty multi-tool. this would let me consolidate the 3.5" camp knife and the small hatchet so I could process the usual wood I need and still many the cutting tasks while the multi-tool covers camp odds/ends like repairs, etc. - Thanks!
Big knives go with a folding saw for me. I use the knife to baton and do fine tasks with it or a folder like the BM 535. Smaller knives go with a hatchet. Love the videos including the religious ones. After a couple year hiatus I’m trying to get back and deeper into my faith
I would pair this with either a good folding saw like my Bacho, or a pack sized axe.this is a great knife, and would be outstanding as a primary belt knife paired with another way to gather and process wood for fires, and camp building projects.
I would pair it up with my Gerber gator machete for wood processing, and for finer tasks around the campfire. Thank you for the side by side comparison of these two. I would certainly put it to good use!
Its crazy how quick this knife will rust on the laser etched part. I battoned a few pieces of pine to get to the fat wood in the center and I shit you not 20 minutes later it rusted while in the sheath
I would pair it with one of my absolute favorite pieces of gear. I purchased a Camillus Hatchet, Knife and Folding Saw kit years ago for a present. I really like the kit and decided to buy one for myself. The knife and hatchet are good, but the saw is small and compact but absolutely a beast. I have used it on several trips for the last few years and it has never let me down. I always carry my saw on every trip and use and abuse it. This knife would make a good addition to my pack. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.
I would pair the fine Essee 6HM with a 7 or 10 inch Corona folding saw. The Corona cuts like a dream, is easy to pack and the price point: you can pick one up for around $20 bucks !!
I used to bring a hatchet or axe with me but am now looking at purchasing a folding saw. (Also have the cold steel shovel but haven't used it for wood processing.)
Definitely pair it with the silky Pocket boy. With the two of those I feel like I could do whatever I needed to, to stay alive! Great video Aaron (as usual!) Keep them coming!!
I would add this to my 5.11 all-hazards nitro backpack that I use on my day hikes. That pack contains an EDC pouch with and old school SOG multitool. I think they would work great together for my hikes.
I would pair this knife with a large chopper. Very useful for camp tasks, but lacking in the chipping department makes me pick a chopper. Good video. Keep up the good work!
I've had an Esee Junglas for a while now and I feel like this would be the perfect companion for the "wilderness king". Like you said I think it would be the perfect around the camp knife.
I think I would pair it with a folding saw; I take smaller camping trips, so this would be perfect for batoning, rather than bringing an ax or hatchet!
I'd pair the HM on my hip with my Mora Kansbol on the shoulder strap of my pack. The HM would do all the brush clearing and wood processing, while the Kansbol would be reserved for food prep, fishing, and fine carving tasks. Incidentally, Aaron, that issue about the feel and utility of the choil is why I was disappointed in the Junglas 2. If that knife had a handle like the ESEE 6, it would be the perfect survival knife, in my view.
Heck yea, I'm in... I'd create a custom side car with a slim profile for the sheath, and add a wire style saw. That way I'd be rdy for all my necessary wood prep no matter what I encounter. Great vid.
Think the Bahco's a good choice. I'd go with that too. Saw plus 6" blade would handle all normal tasks. Would also keep its little brother (my Esee 4 HM) company.
Hey everyone, the giveaway is closed Dan Wilder is our random winner. Thank you all for participating and for your support!
congratulations Dan Wilder...you big jerk!!! :D
Congrats Dan...much as I hate to say it, haha. Thanks again for honest and entertaining content Aaron!
Awesome in-depth review....thanks for the hard work! Our injection molded sheaths are not as temperature sensitive (hot/cold) as kydex.
Thank you very much, that is what I thought and I hope I communicated that properly.
I prefer the injection molded sheath as I live in a hotter environment. Kydex tends to melt to guns/knives when heated up, and that is a problem. I'm happy with the decision to do injection mold sheaths.

So, I would definitely pair up the ESEE 6 HM with a good quality flashlight or headlamp.
Did you guys ever find the missing child?
This knife is very reminiscent of an 18th century Trade Knife. As far as aesthetics go, I think it looks better than the original esee 6.
I would pair the ESEE 6 with my Granfors Bruks small forest ax. Great video!
I think the Esse Junglas would make an excellent compliment to the 6HM. One to handle all the chopping and splitting and the other for finer cutting chores. Plus the look like a matching set.
I think you would have to pair the HM with a folding saw.
You would for both.
You really can't go wrong with either ESEE 6, I would pair the ESEE 6HM with the Tops El Chete. The El Chete works great for big chopping tasks, splitting wood, everything you need a big chopper for, but it doesn't work well at smaller tasks, food prep, notching, etc
For camping? I’d pair it with my Bahco Laplander. Thanks!
Hi. I would pair the Esse6hm with my Tops Wolf Pax hatchet, I believe between the two you can complete just about any task needed in the woods.
i would pair it with a Ruger 10/22 ............it's squirrel season here !
I would definitely go with a folding saw. It's lightweight, efficient and pairs nicely with a great blade like an ESEE 6. My Bahco is always in my pack and so far hasn't let me down.
I would pair it with a Swiss army knife, because of the versatility .
For camping, thats actually a pretty hard question. The Esee 6HM I would probably use for more heavy duty stuff and bushcraft, paired with a Leatherman Signal for lighter duty, fire starting, etc. Great video, and good luck to everybody.
AWESOME! Thank you for the opportunity. I would pair it with my small EDC hunting knife prototype. Thanks again!
Atb,
Jep
So I'm a SERE Specialist working at the Air Force Survival School at Fairchild AFB and I have been using the ESEE 6 for a while as my preferred knife. I love my 6 but I would definitely be interested in taking the HM for a spin to see if my fire craft improves at all. Thanks for the video!
I would pair it with a beautiful woman, I get lonely in the woods.
BAM! YOU WIN!!!!
Well played sir......we have a winner
I would pair with my Coghlan's 180 Sierra Folding Saw. Thanks for chance to win.
But I think the absolute best thing to pair it with is knowledge of the wilderness and your skill set. Esee 6HM and a fiskars hachette or the Mora Robust probably
For camping I would pair the Esse 6 HM with a Leatherman such as the sidekick. That would give me all the tools to do most camp related tasks
If got to go with a folding saw pairing, more than likely my Silky Gomboy.
Hello Dan, Congrats you are the random winner! You have 24 hours to email me at gideonstactical.youtube@yahoo.com
Sent you an email. Yea!
For my hunting and camping needs, I would pair the 6 HM with my Esee Izula II. I have put together quite a collection of blades and gear from your recommendation s. Keep up the good work brother!
I'd pair it up with a tomahawk, cause I'm classy like that. XD
I'd pair it with a glock 19. Never leave home without it.
Hey Aaron, for backpacking (assuming a firesteel is already present) I'd pair it with a Silky or Bahco folder since this particular Esee is not the best chopper. Super light weight option for bucking up those thicker 3"-4" branches for some light batoning.
I'm not dumping my tried and true ESSE 6 for the pretty new girl on the block. I will consider making the HM my side piece, though.
Looks like a fantastic knife. Great to see ESEE release an HM line 6. If I went on a camping trip, I would pair an ESEE 3 with the ESEE 6 HM. I would also bring a folder (probably my PM2 or Crooked River). I would probably also bring my Leatherman Sidekick, which happens to have a petty reliable saw on it for its size.
i would pair it with small hatchet. the two tools would make a wonderful team for around the camp tasks.

I would pair the ESEE6 HLM with a folding saw. Those two tools would provide all the wood processing needed when backpacking.

For camping, with wood processing in mind, I would pair it with a Hults Bruk Tarnaby Hatchet.

Thanks for the opportunity! And I would pair it with a folding saw saw for bigger cutting jobs and the HM for finer work!
I would pair it with a nice folding saw, and my daughters. One helps with wood processing and the other help with having a good time.
I would pair it with the Olight H1 Nova headlamp so I can use both hands when doing chores in the dark.
I'd pair it with some sort of a folding saw to divide the wood into pieces and then use the ESEE to process it as needed
For camping, I'd pair it with an H&B Forge medium or large camp ax.
For camping I would pair it with the most used camping tool I have, my Leatherman Multi-tool.
I would pair it with my CRKT Minimalist fixed blade neck knife. The ESEE looks great for blazing trail, batoning, & heavy work. While I use my CRKT for cooking & detailed work. They would make a great combo.
I would pair it with my GFB small forest axe, or a folding saw depending on where I was going and what fuel sources are available .
I have an old fashioned hatchet that I absolutely love and is my go to for camping and goes everywhere I go thats just me. Thanks for sharing friend.
The pairing would depend on the type of camping but for most part I would pair it with my Silky Gomboy Curve Professional saw.
Esee 6HM and a Silky Pocketboy 170. A great all round combination for what I do. Love the video and channel mate. Cheers.
I would pair it hatchet, maybe something large enough that allows for felling smaller trees for firewood and shelter building.
Bill Mack , when I am camping I always take a folding saw along with my camp knife
Thanks for doing this. I've had my eye on all the hm series knives. I'd probably pair the esee 6 hm with my Leatherman when camping.
I already own an izula 2. I love the limited EDC capabilities of the izula 2. My 9 year old son has been learning how to make fire sticks with it. I think I'm ready to pair it with a larger high quality knife like this. I thank you for this opportunity to win.
I would pair the ESEE6 HM with a folding saw. That should cover the bases nicely!
A medium chopper knife also able to do small tasks would be great with a folding saw out in the woods.
I prefer the fixed blade and folding saw combo. Easy to pack around and takes up minimal space. Would love to give the 6hm a try! Love esee.
I would pair it with 3’ plain bow saw blade to make an on spot bow saw to keep my tools light and capable
Just received my first Esee knife, a CR2.5. I think the two would make a phenomenal combination!
My leather man Rebar! Small folding blade, saw, can opener etc. Great pair i think.
I'd pair it with my buck 110 and love of the outdoors. Sounds like an amazing time with an amazing set of knives.
Well for backpacking I would pair it with my SOG hawk and my Ontario sp 10. Car camping folding bucksaw.
I would pair it up with my snow and nealley kindling axe, these two together would make a great kit around camp
I would pair it with my Estwing hatchet. Between the two, I can process any wood I come across
I would pair it with a GobSpark Triumph fitesteel and Magnesium Rod. Knife and Fire, got it covered.
I would pair the fine Essee 6HM with a 7 or 10 inch Corona folding saw. The Corona cuts like a dream, is easy to pack and the price point: you can pick one up for around $20 bucks !!
I would Pair it with my Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel! + I actually would carry it as my EDC fixed blade!
To pair it with another tool if it was just one other it would be a Estwing Camp axe. If I could I would also bring an esee izula 2 for finer work.
I would pair it with a multi tool or some sort. Like a SAK or a Leatherman Wave. That way you have versatility in a lot activities.
On a hike I would pair it with a SAK. On a camping trip I would pair it with a folding saw.
I would pair this up with easily fixed blade or my camp axe. Great vid love the honesty
Great vid.
I’d pair it with a Schrade Survival hatchet for a camp blade, and a tops lioness Rockies edition for the trail
I would pair it with a my UTKS-3 for smaller tasks and my Spyderco Tenacious to have a complete package of knifes that I may need.
I think I would pair it with a hatchet, probably my CRKT Freyr. Can do the light chopping with that and the lighter tasks with the HM
Love esee's...I would pair with my izula 2...one for camp chores and one for food prep..thanks
I would pair that with my Fiskars folding saw. Would make a good general Bushcraft and camping setup.
I have a large khukuri with which I would pair it that would do all of my chopping and shelter building. I think that would be a great combo.
To find out how good the ESEE6 HM is, I would pair with Mora Companion Fixed Blade.
Think the Bahco's a good choice. I'd go with that too. Saw plus 6" blade would handle all normal tasks. Would also keep its little brother (my Esee 4 HM) company.
