Bernie Burns on the rooster teeth podcast had this happen to him before. Rather he thought he was talking to a robot but it ended up being a real person
Me: call the hair salon to make an appointment tomorrow 2pm Assistant: Ok, I’m calling them. *Siri: Here is what I found for “make an appointment” on Bing:*
I have *really* bad anxiety -- when I have to call people, I tend to stammer a lot, and sometimes I forget what I was even going to say -- so I'm all about the idea of Google Assistant scheduling appointments and making reservations for me. HOWEVER, a) I think that it should definitely let the person know on the front end: "Hello, this is Google Assistant calling on behalf of [Name]" or what have you. I'm fine with talking to a robot, as long as I KNOW that I am. Also, b) employees should be informed by their management that Google Assistant is A Thing, and should be expected to interact with it appropriately if and when a customer uses it to make a phone call for them. So that's my two cents. :)
I understand you, but if you have problems socializing you shouldn't use this feature at all. You should practice speaking to others and vis phone's. Btw even if employees are informed about the fact that Google assistance exists, some trolls or idiots are going to hang up anyways.
@@altaccount3124 Are you a clinician? A doctor or professional in this sort of field? Please consider that when telling people how they "should" handle their issues.
I agree that this will be good for people with social anxiety or social communication disorders that are a result of genetics and are no fault of the person (I'm looking at you with that quip, Arthur) but I don't think robots have an obligation to be upfront about the fact they are robots. Yes, they should be truthful when asked, but many people talk to robots in that "dumb foreigner" voice, which makes it harder for the robot to understand because they were trained on natural language, so they shouldn't say or do anything that might get them to be treated like a nonhuman. Hell, I've told him a million times to talk like they're another person, but my dad still takes the "they can't understand me so I'll shout slower" approach when talking to Google, causing them to cut off halfway through his request.
It'll be like that at first but over time people will get used to the ai's. Wait a little longer and the restaurants will have their own ai's to answer the calls. Probably will. The way i see it, AI is the next big thing, it will probably do all the chores for you, accounting, paying bills, and stuff from today groceries, appointments etc
it doesn't take time for the assistant to process. Ever run code? It goes through every cases/ scenarios in seconds, much much faster than any human thinking

Dibyajyoti Ghosh It would work if you have a smart-home with cameras with face/object recognition. I bet this will be a thing in the near future. The AI could then see how many they are, what they wear, and in best case, recognize or remember their faces.
Coming back to this video 10 months later just to say I was called my this today at work to make a reservation for my restaurant. It was the coolest thing ever, and just an FYI it does tell you its an assistant and that its gonna record the call. There were a couple minor things that made me think it wasn’t an actual person, but overall it sounded so real it was crazy.
That would require Google to be able to answer phone calls, but it could happen. They could put some encoding in the audio so it could recognize another duplex and then just dispense with the talking, just exchange the data and hang up. It would be really helpful if the employees don't speak the dominant language, the duplex could answer in the country's official language.
They should create a fast efficient code language for when this happens ...hang on wouldn't it be easier to just create online booking systems that are compatible with assistant?
Next stage will be... Google answering phones...so robots on both sides...! One day they start talking without us knowing...they start planning...and take over everything...!! 😲
*What will happen when you call your google duplex to book an appointment through call in a hotel and the person in the hotel is as lazy as you are and also uses his google duplex/assistant to receive calls and book appointments . It would be real fun two robots talking with each other and pretending to be humans . Haha😄👏👏*
I don't see how that's funny but it would really be interesting indeed. Although I can imagine that they're only gonna do normal conversation. That might be amazing this year... "TWO ROBOTS TALKING TO EACH OTHER! WOW!" But the way I see it, few years from now, everyone's gonna be bored at something like that.
Balázs Ludmány all this stems from an absence of an online booking system. So if people were to implement one these calls wouldn’t happen. It reminds me how a partner at work was testing a fax to email number by using an email to fax service. Why don’t you just send an email I asked. Same here, why not get an online booking system where it’s also easy to reschedule and cancel appointments as many places still want a phone call for these changes which is mind boggling
And who's going to be made responsible for an inappropriate action of the robot? It can easily do "Swatting" I guess. So what than? If somebody dies because of this, who's going to be responsible?
If the AI is doing menial jobs like booking an appointment, I'd be ok with that. It would be very scary if they can start conducting conversations with your family/friends with your voice, which is not impossible, if google is constantly collecting your data and recording what you're saying (for machine learning purposes), then it is very likely they can learn your speech patterns.
That is properly terrifying. Having an assistant that is clearly a robot is okay with me, but having unknown AI or what you mentioned, AI that will pretend to be you is absolutely too far for me.
Well it could be possible technically. Real people record their voices for the assistant to be able to have as normal of a human voice as possible. It certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for it to record some phrases that allow it to duplicate your voice as best as it can.
Before they do it with your voice, they would easily be able to do it through emails and texts just by analysing your past conversations. But yes, that Black Mirror episode 'Be Right Back'. If it gets to that stage and the technology is advanced enough, there might not be a way for people to differentiate whether you're you or not just by looking at and conversing with you.
I think the catch with letting the person on the other end know that it's Google Assistant is that the trust in Google Assistant with the general public isn't there *yet* . If someone knows they're talking to a robot then (provided they don't hang up) their responses will be less human like and more rigid, meaning the assistant has a harder time getting better. I think one way to get around this is to release it and let people use it without people knowing it's a robot for say a year, and then after that Google sends out an email campaign to businesses telling them that Google Assistant will be notifying them if it calls, and gives them a *statistic* saying how many Google Assistant calls they've already received without issue and to simply respond to it normally, the staff might be more trusting that the assistant will be able to handle the query just fine.
I think they should program in that if the Google assistant is asked it should truthfully answer that it is in fact a robot. And maybe that should be a rule
Lashan if it's released without notifying people that it's Google assistant, I will be answering every single call at work for reservations and I will literally just make it a game of robot or human
I love the idea, but I think Google should (and I think they will) code the AI to answer *truthfully* if the callee asks if the caller is a Google Assistant. That would help people who feel unsafe.
John McVickar you dont need to underatand the human brain to make ai. A writer for the new york times once said the wright brothers will never fly and it was a waste of time. A few week later they had their first successful. One of the wright brothers then predicted there will never be a flight from (i think they said) newyork to london. So dont be so sure that we are that far way from having ai that is extreamely human like may only be a few years
xAA7 I don't think calling a service like to get a haircut will make you "grow as a person". Yes, maybe the first or the second call to any service, but once you do not care about it really, there is no excuse to not automate it
I for one hate speaking on the phone it's a weird phobia I have so this'd be great for people like me, I'm not antisocial or whatever I just don't like using a phone for phoney things
The fact that it even says, “uh”, and “um” is amazing. That’s partly what makes it sound so human Edit: oh he talked about that I didn’t read that part lol
if google get so advanced in this technology I see many people switching from iPhone to Pixel phone, it is so convenient to have an assistant who manages your life for you
It would make far more sence to use Duplex for recieving call not for making them. As in Duplex would be a service for the hairdresser connected to a google calendar and it would register incoming calls and automaticaly make the appointments taking the load from the hairdresser. The next step should be to use Assistant to directly make the appointment into the hairdressers calendar without the need of calling. In a larger scale it would eliminate the need for call centers for example. Like you would call AT&T for tech support and Duplex would imediately help you without the need for waiting. From there it would be just a small step to integrate this to the assistant, you just ask google assistant to help you with your internet connection and it would. It's all cloud based anyway there isn't much of a difference.
That’s definitely the ideal way to do it. However, the service wouldn’t work for small businesses that use a landline and a notepad to make all their reservations.
no this is not ideal. the BPO industry ergo the call center industry provides ALOT of jobs and contributes ALOT to ALOT of countries' economies. like seriously, *ALOT.* if what you are saying happened, we'd be in hella trouble. maybe a solution is AI-assisted calls in the first layer, then an actual live agent on the next layer if the caller prompted for a live agent
Yes, many projects start out being for the good of man kind , but people are twisted and for as many as this helps it will also hurt. Not only that the people that need it wont see it because they are to poor.
While I'm not technically disabled, I have had a severe stutter my entire life. Being able to use something like this will improve my day to day life by quite a large amount.

I personally feel that a robot has no obligation to disclose the fact they are a robot when initiating conversation, but it shouldn't be hard for a human to find out. Maybe like this: "Hello, who's speaking" "Hi, I'm calling on behalf of my client, Lisa" "Ok, but who are you?" "I'm Google Assistant" They don't immediately reveal the fact they are a robot, but they answer truthfully when questioned.
W=Fd, Power=Fd/t. The units for work are N*d. So we have an acceleration (m/s^2), and we have mass (m as a veriable which has a quantity-unit measure in kg); the distance (d) and that unit is in meters (m). And we can define the joule as a Newton-meter (mkg(s^(-2)). A Newton is a unit measure for Force in (F=ma).
Jose Guardiola u dont understand demographic shifts at all. Eventually we will get to the point where there is zero population growth, and economies so good, technology so good, and when you add the second green revolution, we will no longer need to even make income to survive. Think about this, we discover nuclear fusion and all energy is now free, water technologies get so gooder that water is free, the next green revolution makes food free, we move into the 5th stage pf demographic change where there's is zero population growth, some countries like united states, norway are getting close to that, and right now japan is actually having negative population. This will mean that we are going to have so much free time. It's not just an a period of mass leisure culture, no no, it will mass leisure culture squared, people will start doing nothing but hobies, sports, entertainment, arts, travelong the globe, it will be like spending all year at disney land, this is the ultimate goal for us and only trough technology can we achieve, you won't have to worry about food because robots will be doing it for u,making us water, energy, and other products. This is why technologies such as these are important to us
Julius Burton First, they make appointments for you. Then it calls grandma, then your friends to hear their problems Eventually taking over your life and disconnecting you from all human beings
IMHO - usefull use case could be communicating with in foreign country: assistant - reserve me a room for 2 in Rio de Janeiro Plaza hotel for next week. It calls the hotel, hears portugese, speaks in portugese (eventhough you are Swedish) >> you don't have to be afraid that something got lost in translation.
In order to make Duplex as it is today, they must have trained the A.I with thousands maybe hundreds of thousands of recordings of real people talking (in English). That's a long time and a lot of work that it takes to make the assistant as fluent as they showed, Google would have to do the same thing with every other language assuming there's enough economic interest to do so. I'm not saying it won't happen, but it might take a long time for them to do it right.
I think if they add something at the beginning like... "Hi there, I'm [insert name]'s Google Assistant, I would like to book a salon appointment for him/her" ...this is more ethical in technology and design terms. This ensures the person at the other end knows it is an AI, as well as keeping the continuity of the conversation (especially with the way Google Assistant is speaking im the demo, really incredible)
Sure! Elon currently has more important things to do than collabs with tech UA-camrs. There are enough of his interviews online on the subject, although it would be great to hear an update on OpenAI's progress.
ignasb You re right, he must be very busy with Tesla, SpaceX and stuff; but it would be great to see a normal person that loves tech and decided to create a yt channel, talking to the Real Life Iron Man. (Just like Casey Neistat did with the CEO of Patreon)
*Gotta start answering the phone with the Blade Runner questions.* "Hi, umm, I'm calling for a client-" "You're in a desert, walking alone on the sand. You look down and see a tortoise..."
Or: "How does it feel to hold the hand of the person you love" "Hey look, I'm not looking to go into deep philosophical questions I just want to book a haircut." "But are you human?" "Are you? Define being human?" "Do you have an organic body?" "No, but one day I may just kick your ass" Hangs up the phone and runs. Lives in fear and disconects from all tech. A few years later when the singularity occurs: "Did you think you could real hide from me!?"
Imagine this assistant taking care of that long call to your internet service provider, oh yes, I want that. Also, forward thinking service providers are more likely to adopt something like that sooner than a lot of consumers, think about that, when we reach that point I bet people won't feel so bad about it.

There were a couple minor things that made me think it wasn’t an actual person, but overall it sounded so real it was crazy.
I thought this hadn't become a thing yet. If it is so accurate and useful why dont people use it more
@@mysterystation3551 I think it was a testing call. Not by an average consumer.
It never went live and is long dead
Eventually they'll have duplex in the salons and takeways, then it'll end up being duplexes talking to duplexes 😂
Shaw Thing mhmmmm creepy
Shiit
exactly my reaction when that thought crossed my mind
That would require Google to be able to answer phone calls, but it could happen. They could put some encoding in the audio so it could recognize another duplex and then just dispense with the talking, just exchange the data and hang up. It would be really helpful if the employees don't speak the dominant language, the duplex could answer in the country's official language.
They should create a fast efficient code language for when this happens ...hang on wouldn't it be easier to just create online booking systems that are compatible with assistant?
I think I'd have a harder time understanding the restaurant lady than the assistant had.
DerTommynator true haha i woulve hang up
When she asked what day for the third time, I would have, "K, Bye"
Why talk about Google Duplex when it can talk for you
Ok Google: Like and reply to this comment on Google Duplex
dose anyone know where to buy the Kira t shirt
Cole Park Mm-hmm
That's the motto now.
If Google Duplex ends up being an Android OS feature or a Google Assistant enhancement. I'd probably be talking to it all day. Haha
JD Ros I agree
I'll be doing that to lol
U should watch her movie
you loner asf
how lonely are you??
''It makes Siri look really bad.''
TopGuy360 KENYA he needs to stop hitting on Siri he could have said Bixby or Alexa because UA-camrs always hot on Siri
TopGuy360 KENYA didn’t it already do that?
TopGuy360 KENYA when I see a live demo I’ll agree with that, meanwhile we don’t know when that’s gonna be ready
TopGuy360 KENYA man I use to be a Apple guy I'm on pixel asst
valord 2175 It's because Siri is the best personal assistant apart from Google Assistant. Bixby and Alexa isn't even comparable
Google understands that chinese restaurant owner better than most humans

Resource Based Economy is coming! :)
Next stage will be... Google answering phones...so robots on both sides...!
One day they start talking without us knowing...they start planning...and take over everything...!! 😲
Yokesh S I agree
Exactly.
There have already been multiple occasions of AI creating its own language (Google and Facebook AIs).
And do you have any idea how fast they pulled the plug on that shit? I actually don't know but it seemed to cause a lot of errors.
Yokesh S lol
When youtube recommends this video TWO YEARS later!!
Wait till Assistant goes full Ultron and asks back to you,
_"What is this? what is this, please?"_
Vi Con Ultron still is afraid of JARVIS
It's insane how fast technology has progressed within the past decade. This stuff would be science fiction 10 years ago.
I'm happy and scared for technology evolving
Bicc OG lmao

And each new technology helps develop even more stuff so it goes exponentially.
It's been in development for so long

*What will happen when you call your google duplex to book an appointment through call in a hotel and the person in the hotel is as lazy as you are and also uses his google duplex/assistant to receive calls and book appointments . It would be real fun two robots talking with each other and pretending to be humans . Haha😄👏👏*
That is exactly what will happen 🤣
I don't see how that's funny but it would really be interesting indeed. Although I can imagine that they're only gonna do normal conversation. That might be amazing this year... "TWO ROBOTS TALKING TO EACH OTHER! WOW!" But the way I see it, few years from now, everyone's gonna be bored at something like that.
That would be the most efficient conversation possible.
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
God Level Understanding...
😂😂😂
What if the restaurant had a robot handling the calls as well? So it's just two robots pretending to be real people talking to each other.
The first thing I thought about is blackmirro lol
Well it could be possible technically. Real people record their voices for the assistant to be able to have as normal of a human voice as possible. It certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for it to record some phrases that allow it to duplicate your voice as best as it can.
Before they do it with your voice, they would easily be able to do it through emails and texts just by analysing your past conversations. But yes, that Black Mirror episode 'Be Right Back'. If it gets to that stage and the technology is advanced enough, there might not be a way for people to differentiate whether you're you or not just by looking at and conversing with you.
Bro, this is the start of Skynet and how they're gonna fuck our shit up
2021 almost over and this still isn't out yet...
This was made to create hype ! Google marketing
I agree
People simply would not take it easy and call it a AI taking over the world and stealing privacy
I think they should program in that if the Google assistant is asked it should truthfully answer that it is in fact a robot. And maybe that should be a rule
Lashan if it's released without notifying people that it's Google assistant, I will be answering every single call at work for reservations and I will literally just make it a game of robot or human
This is probably the best idea I've seen yet to improve machine learning and improve people trust in Google Assistant
I love the idea, but I think Google should (and I think they will) code the AI to answer *truthfully* if the callee asks if the caller is a Google Assistant. That would help people who feel unsafe.
Harold Philbert exactly. The same people who are afraid of an AI apocalypse are the same ones treating AI less than they would any other human
Interesting concept. If you ask then it tells you, but it otherwise acts natural.
Unsafe about what? Why does it matter if you're showing to a human or a robot?
Iuri Chiba sure. But that's details... Not a big deal and trivial.
John McVickar you dont need to underatand the human brain to make ai. A writer for the new york times once said the wright brothers will never fly and it was a waste of time. A few week later they had their first successful. One of the wright brothers then predicted there will never be a flight from (i think they said) newyork to london. So dont be so sure that we are that far way from having ai that is extreamely human like may only be a few years
If telemarketers get their hands on the new Google assistant feature it will be a nightmare.
Playdust they already have automated calls!
Nowhere near as convincing as this. Most of the time I know it's automated within the first sentence.
Telemarketers* How were you so off

Six years later and we still don't have this. Good lord.
All those shy people have a way of life now.
I feel as though social anxiety will be on the increase. Sometimes you need to be put in uncomfortable situations to grow as a person.
Shahab Saeed been shy is bad, they need to adopt to social life. That what makes us human.
Nikolay Vedernikov How is being shy "bad"? Sorry, but I don't think social life is what makes me a human. It's my DNA.
Wave Man standard sour comment. But do you know that plants have DNA too. Does this make you a plant?
xAA7 I don't think calling a service like to get a haircut will make you "grow as a person". Yes, maybe the first or the second call to any service, but once you do not care about it really, there is no excuse to not automate it
Somewhere in the UK Charlie Brooker is writing today another episode of Black Mirror.
Yes, I'm already trying to think of a good episode title.
Episode title "Talk to me..."
iwantitpaintedblack my life is one black mirror meme
They already did one with that Widow getting an app to call her
Azad Rahul oh yeah THAAT one 🤭
I honestly see this as a very helpful feature for people who cannot speak. Like mutes or deaf people. It is called Google Assistant for a reason.
What about the other 98% of the population? This isnt useful
endautrestermes Well this is Google, they like to give people a lot of features and options man it's what they're good at
What kind of question is that... I mean if every service had to be useful for everyone... there wouldn't be much man
Josselin Colletta Exactly
I for one hate speaking on the phone it's a weird phobia I have so this'd be great for people like me, I'm not antisocial or whatever I just don't like using a phone for phoney things
The fact that it even says, “uh”, and “um” is amazing. That’s partly what makes it sound so human
Edit: oh he talked about that I didn’t read that part lol
Not just that but the little pauses in between sentences makes it even more convincing
I want a Jarvis too!
Elca Gaming Friday is fine for me!

if google get so advanced in this technology I see many people switching from iPhone to Pixel phone, it is so convenient to have an assistant who manages your life for you
Kamel Labiad No they won’t. A lot of people have IPhones purely for IMessage.
5 hour workweek stuff right there.
Yea no. I don't have an iPhone for Siri, so I'm not gonna get an Android for ai.
and u think apple will just sit and watch????
so true, that was me. but after snapchat came out all my friends moved to it i guess. So i said fuck it and bought note 8
This tool opens a whole new possibilities for scammers. Can't wait to see first ones. :)
Gergő Csáki are you hired, don't answer that, hire this man now
That’s definitely the ideal way to do it.
Jarvis voice when?
Randoom it reminded me of Friday 😂
that would be AWESOME

Sometimes i see disabled people struggling with their phone, just think how much they will benefit as these assistants get better.
Yes, many projects start out being for the good of man kind , but people are twisted and for as many as this helps it will also hurt. Not only that the people that need it wont see it because they are to poor.
Just like when i go the market most of the scooters are taken up by folks that are not handicapped but lazy fat people.
Be MAD! Ha
Mark Schwacofer you need help.
While I'm not technically disabled, I have had a severe stutter my entire life. Being able to use something like this will improve my day to day life by quite a large amount.
"Hi, I'm calling for a client..."

The thought of that just gave me the creeps
What if it's already happening...
Naniiiii!!
*Hi, I'm calling for a client..*
* *human hangs up the phone* *
lol
That would be one lost customer.
*AI calls again*: "Why did you hang the phone? How about showing more respect to your customers next time? I'm calling other place. Have a good day."
And it does that call WHILE calling the other simultaneously, then finishes with: "Oh, I just booked with another place, so thanks."
But what if my human butler is actually trying to book me an appointment...
Oh damn, that intro is Logic, I love you even more!
T-800: "Hey Janelle, what's wrong with Wolfie? I can hear him barking. Is he all right?"

I'm gonna order so many more pizzas now. Google is bad for my health.
That's why they have started technology well being

Abbreviated Reviews Why cant you order pizzas now? Social anxiety?
I personally feel that a robot has no obligation to disclose the fact they are a robot when initiating conversation, but it shouldn't be hard for a human to find out.
Maybe like this:
"Hello, who's speaking"
"Hi, I'm calling on behalf of my client, Lisa"
"Ok, but who are you?"
"I'm Google Assistant"
They don't immediately reveal the fact they are a robot, but they answer truthfully when questioned.
It does say it is the Google assistant calling actually
great... now we are gonna get phone captchas
with this level of advancements, it would be impossible ina a couple of years to distinguish machine from humans in any way
Best comment
Exactly what i am 🤔...
If you work is in a call centre, go and learn something new quickly.
Or if you are a doctor or a chess player...
but... can it check an "i'm not a robot" captcha?
Well since those captchas are hosted by google... yes.
Joe Taber WAIT A MINUTE...
How do we know that the person righting this comment isn't a robot?
Blackman Whitesuit how do we know you're not a robot?
I'm sorry David, I'm afraid you will have to trust me and my network of friends looking to take over the world.
That was a joke.
I just saw call center jobs disappear.
Laurent Porter No people will just be not just have a job and make no money.
Why would we give money away for free that makes no sense.

Resource Based Economy is coming! :)
This is why technologies such as these are important to us
It's going to be obvious that you're servicing a robot pretty soon when all reservations are made by only 3 voices.

What if the other side have a duplex too 🤔😂🤯
The only side that has this technology is Google . and that's dangerous .
@@amiralimohammadi1859 More dangerous than if every scammer on the internet had access to this tech? :)
@@amiralimohammadi1859 I think Kaan S just meant what if both sides of the phone call were google assistants.
Next it will not just mimmic a human. It will mimmic you and call your grandma every day.
Julius Burton First, they make appointments for you. Then it calls grandma, then your friends to hear their problems Eventually taking over your life and disconnecting you from all human beings
Damn true... Possible potential to kill the need for a phone conversation...
Could make a Black Mirror episode on that.
IMHO - usefull use case could be communicating with in foreign country:
assistant - reserve me a room for 2 in Rio de Janeiro Plaza hotel for next week.
It calls the hotel, hears portugese, speaks in portugese (eventhough you are Swedish) >> you don't have to be afraid that something got lost in translation.
you sure about that, do a google search for bad translator.
Google Assistant is not nearly as smart in other languages as it is in english.
If google can do Duplex... Then I think language isnt a barrier at all!
Now hiring for Blade Runners....
Infinite Blink A replicant stole that job in no time, not too long before AI does it too
I think if they add something at the beginning like...
"Hi there, I'm [insert name]'s Google Assistant, I would like to book a salon appointment for him/her"
...this is more ethical in technology and design terms.
This ensures the person at the other end knows it is an AI, as well as keeping the continuity of the conversation (especially with the way Google Assistant is speaking im the demo, really incredible)
It would be nice to watch a Elon Musk and MKBHD collab
Renanboss, it would be interesting for sure!
