    Timing chain is pretty straight foward. I can make a video but I don't work on these often. One good tip is remove the oil pan. To get the pieces out and to make the cover go back on easier

    its always a good idea to use plastiguage to check the cam bearings to make sure they aren't gonna fail especially on higher milage engines,and also a new set of headbolts ...when you torque bolts down the threads stretch,and can give u problems ...also new rockers are a good idea too...

    Just a tip, I remove the spark plugs as well as drain the water from the system, and pull the t stat. The couple of times I didn’t the head gasket started to blow. Also I’ve didn’t think about the wedge, I’ve always used a zip tie in the cam gear hole around the timing chain.

    I NEVER reuse headbolts....actually, I prefer STUDS, you never have to worry about stretch with them. Also, I have all the rockers checked and machined (if necessary) before reassembly. This assures minimal cam lobe wear and dont forget to set valve clearances. I also tie a wire to the chain....just an added precaution...

    RIP Ron. Just a heads up. You rotate the crank a full 360 degrees after adjusting your first four valves to do the last four. This in turn rotates the camshaft 180 degrees giving you the proper orientation. He did right stuff but was thinking about cam rotation when he said 180. Good guy and he did good work 👍

    According to the manual they say it's wrong to leave the head on when replacing the cam but you had success. One thing I recently heard about was using ratchet straps to hold pressure on the head when doing this.

      @@Toyotas_n__Tools He didn't fall asleep, a 20 year old kid did (allegedly) and sent my Dad's car into the air when my Dad was rounding a corner. Pretty sure that was a lie though based on the level of damage, more likely the kid was going an insane speed around the corner and lost traction.

    I watched this video years back and I’m jut now refreshing as I “plan” to attempt a cam swap here in the next few days on my 22RE. So, I’m attempting a refresh here.. I have a rebuilt rocker assembly with surfaced rockers and awaiting the cam arrival. In any case, I’ve always wondered how long the head gasket lasted after Ron and son completed this little upgrade? I read in the comments that over a year had passed without issue, but that was many years ago now in February 2021. Anyone know? I’d be curious. It also wouldn’t surprise me at all to learn it’s still running well today. I’m hoping the family still has that pickup. Ron’s videos are missed and he did took great care in his work, it’s obvious. Thanks

      Been driving a 22R's since 87' (4 different engines) and suggest going the extra couple hours and replace the head gasket....Its the weak point of the 22R. Last one I had to do blew between #3 and #4 cyls and burned out some aluminum on the head. Took it to Larry's head service in LA and they where able to fix it by tig welding in the missing aluminum. I cant see doing a cam change without a new head gasket unless you like to do it right....cause you had to did it twice...

    • @josephclark36g
      @josephclark36g 7 років тому +3

      they will bend.. the first timing chain job I did as a teenager on my 22r I put it on 180 degrees wrong on the cam.. and in 3 seconds, I bent all 4 exhaust valves, and had zero compression

    • @thedelk30
      @thedelk30 5 років тому +2

      22re is a interference motor. They put dips in the piston to keep from bending valves on some models

    • @Hateline
      @Hateline 3 роки тому

      22R however does not have valve reliefs in the piston in fact the piston has a crown which protrudes higher than the surface of the block deck

    Cam and rockers "mate for life" so putting a new cam with old rockers (or even re surfaced rockers) will end up damaging the cam.

    • @josephclark36g
      @josephclark36g 7 років тому

      most of the time, unless you have excessive wear, it will be fine, I just put a LC cam mine my with 165K, no problems.. but i did hold it is 1300rpm for 18 mins, to break it in properly.

    • @chris9389
      @chris9389 7 років тому

      funny how LC says to get new rockers also...

    • @josephclark36g
      @josephclark36g 7 років тому

      Mine are doing just fine. I just inspected them 2 weeks ago. They mated perfectly, all surfaces slick and shiny. I have spent nearly $2000 with LCE, they sell the best stuff for sure. But they are in the business to make money, so of course they will recommend new rockers, also, because they are not present to inspect each cam installation. And some rockers badly worn should be replaced, and if they recommend it be replaced then they can be liability free.

    • @snippits75
      @snippits75 7 років тому

      If there is no hour glass wear pattern on the rocker surface, it's not a problem with a new cam. Hour glass shaped wear indicates there is back and forth movement from the rocker assembly, and the rocker assembly should be rebuilt with new springs and rocker arms, or the whole assembly replaced.

    • @tonyjenkins7156
      @tonyjenkins7156 3 роки тому +1

      Be very careful with reusing rockers. I rebuilt a 22RE head, new valves and cam, but original rockers. Assembly lube, break in oil, 15 minutes at 2000rpm. Changed oil after and then at 200 miles. Reset lash. 3000 mile oil changes. Lash check. By 10,000 miles the cam was toast. Wear on all exhaust lobes.
