Travel Guide (flexible 7-13 day route) of this custom route available on Thatch: www.thatch.co/guide/3ape212bk....
ABOUT THE HIKE
In July 2022 I hikes a self-made variant of the Peaks of the Balkans trail in Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. My route started in Theth Albania crossing over to Valbone, Çerem, Döberdol and climbing the tallest peak in Kosovo (Gjeravica). I then crossed into Montenegro to Plav via Hrid Lake and Babino Polje. From there I hiked through Prokletije national park to Vusanje and Gusinje. I visited the Grebaje valley, and then got to the valley of the lakes to ascent the tallest peak in the Albanian Alps: Maja e Jezerca (Jezercë). I then made my way through the Poljanska valley of the Accursed Mountains, where I'd camped last winter ( • Solo Winter Camping at... ) and over the Qafa e Pejës pass back to Theth.

Criticism? Brother, I can't even imagine the effort that must go into making this. Those winter/summer transitions made without special effects? Unbelievable. My favorite part was the drone video of you swimming in that beautiful blue lake. I really like seeing the mountain people too. I hope you know how much we appreciate you taking us to places most of us will never see.
Thank you (: Appreciate it
Transitions are on fire!
Work of art!! Transitions are amazing. Speaks volumes w/out saying a word. Which did you film first? Winter or Summer? How did you get the wound on your leg?
Out of all the hiking/trekking videos that document long trails, this is the kind that really reaches/touches you. Silence, no annoying music, no constant talking about the route, no trying to make it into a drama/telenovela by showing difficulties, no self-centered "me, me me! look at me! Ooooh look how cool it is here, woooohooooo", no "oh, this is so dangerous and hard! Look how tough we are! Look how much we are suffering!!"
But instead... a peaceful video documentation of splendid landscapes. One almost feels like he's there. No words can make it justice. We really need more of this. Peace, silence, connection with nature. And less show-offs and attention seekers.
From all the hiking channels, yours is by far the best I've seen so far. I just subscribed and hope you keep making videos in the future.
As a solo traveller myself, your videos make me emotional. You are the only person who's videos I can show to someone else and say "see, thats why I travel solo, period". Thank you.
Haha, love hearing that. Thanks!
@@HarmenHoek You're not a solo traveller, are you? Sometimes you do something and the drone films you and flies curves. There's another drone pilot, isn't there? Besides, it would be pretty dangerous in remote places if no one could call for help in the event of an accident - and the cell phone has no connection.
My mother has dementia and she's slowly fading away. Whenever she gets nervous or anxious, we play one of your videos and watch it together. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing that, I feel humbled when I realize it has such an effect om people. All the best to your mum and you!
I swear to God that these are the best, most beautiful hiking films that I have ever seen in my life.
Nothing more to say, just thanks!
Thanks a lot!
Craig Adams invented this genre but you've mastered it and got it to the next level! This movie, like your other ones, is art 👏
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
totally agree
Love Craig’s videos, but he makes the same mistake of using music .. drop the sappy tunes - perhaps publish 2 versions, see where you’ll get more views
Like them both. KA's are kind of nature feel but HH's are kind of cinematic and epic work
@@rocketman3565 DO you mean no music at all and only natural sounds in the whole film? Like no music ever?
I live in the Accursed Mountains, and you have recorded the beauty of our mountains masterfully; I haven't seen any other footage which can compare. When I am out there in the mountains, I am often overwhelmed by how stunning the scenery around me is, and I kind of feel overwhelmed by the fact that I do not have the technology to do it justice. I feel sad that I cannot accurately capture and share with others the scale of the rocks, the quality of the light, the clarity of the water, and the variation in the flora and fauna. But I feel truly relieved and excited to see that you have put in so much effort and have thoroughly managed to do so. For all of us; both those of us who know this landscape intimately, and who wish that others did so too, and those who have not been lucky enough to be immersed in such a wild and wonderful landscape. Thank you sincerely for sharing the beauty of these natural wonders.
Furthermore, as illegal, exploitative activities encroach further and further in to these vulnerable areas, it is only works of public information sharing like yours that might make the wider international community aware of how important it is to protect and preserve these bio-diverse, sensitive and extremely valuable areas. The Accursed Mountains have people like you to thank for highlighting their beauty and for thus fighting their cause.
Hearing that from a local really humbles me. It's definitely a special place especially having it seen in both seasons. Thanks for sharing! All the best
Hope you liked this one as much as I did!
Editing-wise this was the toughest project so far, also trying to tell a secondary story of winter. But a great learning process. Love to hear what you thought about it. Criticism is more than welcome, I want to keep improving!
All the summer-winter transitions:
0:08, 1:07, 9:00, 10:16, 19:20, 21:15, 28:23, 31:28, 43:58, 44:46
Some random facts you might like:
6:36 I never fall on trail, but when it did happen it was kinda bad. I cut myself (probably on the rock I sled on) on my shin so deep I could see the muscle inside (hope I am not making anyone nauseous). I cleaned the wound with water al alcohol and glued it together. I always bring superglue for this multipurpose use. What I didn't show is that at guesthouse I stayed at that night there were some people with medical background that helped me disinfect the wound once more. All the days after I kept cleaned the wound with boiled water daily, kept it free of any dirt and used to antibiotic cream to prevent it from disinfecting, and all went well. Special thanks to Mirthe, Charlotte, Hester and the others from the guesthouse for helping me out there!
16:32 I don't think I've ever been this lucky with the weather. All nights outside dry, inside rain and thunder. What are the odds? (3/5 nights outdoors, 2/5 nights rain. (3/5)*(2/5) = 24% chance.)
27:43 This descent was steep! Average slope of 53%, with a 300m section of 72%. I probably should have checked the slope before I headed down that way. But a fun adventure.
31:42 The valley from winter camping last winter. Although I knew the route, I still had to convince myself I'd been there before. It was so different! Which season I liked most? Winter. With the snow it was so much more peaceful, everything was untouched and perfectly smooth, plus there were no mosquitos or ants crawling over you. In winter I could easily maneuver through the same forest that was now full of branches, loose rocks and blackberry bushes. Plus, the slopes were so steep that by no means I could pitch my tent here now.
35:46 This was my favorite camp spot of this trip. The remoteness, those tall peaks all around and the alpine lake of course. Loved it.
39:25 The highlight of this trip. That lighting in the morning, the beautiful and technical ascent and the 360 degree views up there. From there I could basically see the whole loop. And it was so windy up here! I took some effort to get the drone in the air and get these shots. My hands started getting cold and I if I lost that drone there, I would have lost all the drone footage of this trip.
A true masterpiece once again. I can't believe all the troubles you went to just to get those perfect shots of, for example, you brewing and drinking coffee filmed from four angles. This level of dedication is insane. I cannot comprehend how you find the time to hike 21km and 1500m of elevation inbetween filming all of this. Maybe you're just screwing with us and in reality you've got two hired cameramen, one in front of you and one behind :D
However, the endresult is nothing short of cinematic. I have just returned from hiking two weeks on the HRP and am actually very content to be back home again. Yet, after watching your film, I'm itching again to get back on the trail again. Watching your work really feels like being out there.
EDIT: Oh, and the summer/winter transitions were just amazing. I had to look two or three times to convince myself that this was not CGI. They look so smooth and the angle of each corresponding shot is so similiar that at first I thought "this looks way too smooth to not be rendered/not real". Stunning, really.
Love it A master at editing, audio is amazing as well.
@@anatexis_the_first Thanks a lot! Comments like these are a true reward for the hard work.
I wish I had two cameramen with me all day, that would have been so relaxed. (; Truth is I've been a athlete for some time, used to running up to 12 times a week, that really helps a lot with these hikes. And I don't get near enough sleep during these hikes. (;
The HRP is still on my list! How was it?
Just beautiful!! From a technical side: Are you shooting in a log or natural profile? Thank you.
@@jof1954 On GH5 natural with LUMA corrections in post. Log on the DJI to match the GH5 in post.
I like your style Harmen! A LOT!!!
Please don’t change!
Be yourself!
No words spoken! Silence! But so powerful!
You definitely have my most respect and admiration!
You are my Bruce Lee!🙏
Thank you (:
I am a grown man hiker at age of 32 myself. This part made me drop some tears out of nowhere 32:28
You have an amazing talent and power to turn this content into therapy. Thank you.
Regards from Lithuania
Does anyone know the music?
You made incredible progress in few last videos. Your channel is currently the best one in the silent hike genre. Thanks a lot!
Happy to hear that. Thank you too.
The mere thought of the amount of behind the camera work to produce this excellent film makes me shudder. You are very brave, not only for walking alone in the wilderness, but even more for all the trips between the camera and the scene of action. It takes true dedication and a ton of patience to do that hundreds of times. The result, however, is worth the effort. Well done!
Mate this was unreal. I can’t get over how stunning that scenery was and how relaxing this was to watch. The shots, editing and music are superb, keep up the great work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Harmen- I loved the beautiful film you made here! It’s so much appreciated and loved, please keep these films coming. Your work is very enjoyed as I may never get to these mountains you hike. Do you stay at hostels along the way- how do you pay for an overnite stay?!
I watched every summer/winter transition twice (at least)!!!! That must have taken some planning in advance to achieve that smooth effect. Amazing editing and poster-level photography as always. Random facts in the comments section is still my favourite!!! When I see this great work on the big screen of my TV, i could almost feel every moment: the pain when you hurt your leg, the annoying bugs, the cool lake dip, the tiredness under the heat, the relaxation putting on the flip flop.......and the tasty blueberry yogurt breakfast! Can´t wait to see your next adventure!!!
Love your comment, thanks! It's comments like these that are a true reward for the hard work. More to come!
Thank you Harmen! We are big fans of your awesome work. Please keep it going!
Thank you Jessica! This definitely helps to keep going! More films to come!
I don’t usually comment on UA-cam but this time I have to. This is video is brilliant. Good job man! Thank you for this piece of pure art
Happy you did. Thanks for the comment (:
That was a spectacle! Transitions between winter and summer were jaw-dropping. I'm speechless. Not only the beautiful scenery, but the effort you put into filming and then editing! Also I've never seen such a variety of framing and angles, literally every scene was different. Wow and thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Outstanding. I appreciate the music not being overbearing and not overly dramatic.
Thanks!
Spielberg level direction and photography! You deserve an Oscar. Thanks for sharing!
Haha, thanks for the compliment (:
Thank you for showing the beauty of our countries in the Balkans. Breathtaking.
Loves your content. It spreads peace and positive vibes.
Thanks man!
The Best! No unnecessary selfies or cheap speeches. Just Nature and Solitude in best Sceneries.
Thanks! That's just how I intended it (:
@@HarmenHoek Keep it up
Only ONE comment this is perfect in all terms. Between dream and documentary. For those who love mountains and hiking.
Beautiful serene music-flawless camera & drone shots-fearless hiker-breathtaking mountain scenery- both winter & summer scenes equal another 5 Star mini movie. Harmen, you are the best. Didn’t want it to end. Loved your dinner partner- the cat. 👍🏻🙋🏼♀️🇺🇸👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the kind words (:
Man, we’re always blown away by your films. You’re an outstanding film maker mate. 10/10 for creativity & production. And the scenery was absolutely stunning.
You're the best! More to come!
Stunning. Cinematography and editing worthy of David Lean! ❤️👍🏼
Wow, thank you!
Here comes again! The nuclear energy hiking man!
Please keep safe bro!

One of the most beautiful hiking video I've ever seen! Made me remember that the real joy of life is found in simple things.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My goodness, I am totally blown away! I love everything about this movie (yes, movie): Those seasonal changes?! The amount of work, the pace, the edit, the choice of music. How does this not have 2 million views already? Nothing short of phenomenal, spectacular, extraordinary! Well done! 😀👍❤️
Fantastic. I prefer to have no commentary as it detracts from the stunning scenery and great camera work. Music is great too.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hollywood doesn't have this quality of videos and cinematics just wow
Haha, thanks (:
@@HarmenHoek but seriously those scenes and cinematics are so so developed
No words to use…

Awesome. Happy to hear that. Cheers
The Balkans mountains are absolutely gorgeous and beautiful. Thank you for talking us along. You choose the perfect season too.
They are indeed. I was so lucky with the weather!
It's the best healing video. Thankfully, I'm enjoying it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Happy to hear that!
TBH im Speechless, this is too perfect
What an incredibly talented film maker you are. Truly exceptional! Thanks for giving us first row tickets at your adventures. The winter-summer fades are amazing btw
Straight masterpiece! In awe and can't find the words to describe the beautiful nature and amount of effort put into this content.
Thanks, Harmen. Its beautiful.

I repeatedly watched your videos but didn't get bored at all, I hope you continue to upload videos every now and then
Thanks! More to come for sure!
I am passionate about hiking and nature videos. I am glad I found you yesterday! Already watched almost all of your videos! This is definitely the most special one. Thank you, awesome job! A big hug from the Netherlands!
Maybe I'm wrong but this ASMR hiking video playing simultaneously two hikes recorded at different moments is the first kind of its art!!!
And I'm watching such videos since years. Never saw anything like that before. You probably set the bar two levels higher.
And then even combined with timelapse, drone and slider footage makes this a masterpiece.
That's true art. You have my respect. ❤
Thanks for your comment, Brian.
Wow great video 🥰🥰🥰
Lovely place ❤️❤️
Greetings from Pacific
This is the type of content I have been looking for...no talking, easy music, and a connection to trail. You have captured the intimacy we can have as solo trekkers. I could feel the trail through your video, all the big and small parts of what it is to trek. Thank you so very much for taking the time on your treks to capture the footage, work your magic, and then put out some soul touching content. This is greatly appreciated!
Harmen the transition from summer to winter and vice versa is the best I have ever seen. The drone footage thing from summer to winter was mind boggling. Always a big admirer of you and your work.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I´m from Albania and this video is stunning!!!! WELL DONE!!! 😍
Glad you liked it!!
Amazing video, definately this is the best hiking channel I know, and I watch lots of this stuff! Already looked up "Peaks of Balkan" on maps, seems like you can get more solitude there, than e.g. in the french alps with all these famous trails,...please slow down a bit, you put so much trips on my bucket list, don't know how to realize all this hiking,... thanks! Summer/winter parts were outstanding, by the way.
Yeah, you are totally right. These mountains are still quite undiscovered. No refuges or skilfts on any of the mountains like in the Alps oe Pyrenees. That’s what I liked most about it. But at the same time the rate of development along the trails is huge! I bet in 5 years it’s much busier there.
Thanks for the compliments
Wow, incredible, the greatest UA-cam videographer of all time 👏👏👌👌👌
Wow, thanks!
Beyond amazing! The scenery is as beautiful as any scenery anywhere, rivaling even that of Alaska and Yosemite. Your film making artistry is the best! Your cinematography, editing and storytelling skills are world class. The combination of shots from two different hikes at different times of the year is flawlessly executed! The music selection is spot on for the tone of the video and really helps to draw me into it. Thank you for all your work and dedication and bringing us along on your journey.
Dear Harmen you are an inspiring BEAST! love seeing your stuff! thanks!
I appreciate that!
Real art 🙏🏻🏔️ enjoyed this so much. Keep on going my friend 🤙🏻

Glory to the Creator of the Peaks of the Balkans!
Good to see that your leg got healed pretty quick.

Oh yes, that was a cool spot!
This was breathtaking! Seriously, not only the places and the scenes comparing with winter, but the filming and editing and this spot on music.. Just epic! Thank you so much!
Please come to Japan someday and make a movie.

When I watch your videos I feel nothing but joy. Congrats on yet another amazing film!
Just how I intent these videos to be. Thank you (:
Among all the suffering and destruction that comes our way it's you Harmen who can draw us into a world of infinite peace and beauty. To me this is more than a film about a man going on a hike, it is a healing vision of the overwhelming beauty of our planet. This is the stuff we would only expect from BBC with an open budget. I smiled through the whole film but really laughed when the donkey was helping the other get up the hill. On the final frames it says Isaiah but I could not read the numbers. Best wishes
Isaiah 54:10. I appreciate you took the time to comment, put a smile on my face too. (: All the best!

Beautiful video. I don't know how it is possible for one person to create a "Masterpiece" such as this video. Really amazing. I can't even imagine what all it would entail in work. THANK YOU.

The nights under the stars without tent, the foggy forest and the transition into winter over the riverbed impressed me the most. Thats a great hiking and filming project. Truly beautiful.

This is just stunning! I admire your work you deserve more subscribers Harmen! Thank you for every video you create!💯💫
Thanks a lot! Appreciated (:
When I watch this... the experience is almost as if it is so deeply soaked in sorrow, but its pure and true and beautiful. It's not sad, but gentle. I am so glad to be a part of this even if just from viewing it. You encaptulate the effect of nature on life so well. The cinematics are brilliant btw, keep up the great work.

Another amazing top notch video! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I played this video randomly and I am so glad I did, this is absolutely gorgeous and relaxing, the shots are stunning and I envied you quite often, master piece.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My opinions are:
1- Editing is so impressing.
2- The nature is amazing, maybe you can use slow motion techniques especially streaming water.
3- Maybe you can take footage under water.
4- You are so brave, being alone at the mountains is scary.
5- Drone footages are also amazing.
My questions are:
1- Are you alone or one of your friend help you as a camareman?
2- Are you afraid of wild animals?
3- Have you ever met any wild animal that scare you?
And thanks for sharing these kinds of videos with us, you made me admired.
Thanks for the compliments and the useful feedback!
1. I am alone
2. No, not at all. Animals are predictable and encounters with dangerous ones are extremely rare.
3. No. I've seen bears and poisonous snakes, but encountering them gave me a bigger feeling of wonder than fear.
Been following for a few months now. I always play your video the last hour of the night before bedtime.
This is amazingly edited. Incredible footage.
Appreciate your work greatly. Lots of respect for your editing process as well.
Thank you for your artistry and experience of the world

Thank you very much for this video too. Another one of your beautiful works. The same trails in winter and summer, "incredible", I can imagine the work it took you to do all this. I never get tired of watching it over and over again. The Isle of skye is one that I love to watch without getting tired of it again. Thank you very much again. God bless you a lot, I'm living your travels in those places as if it were me, ☺. God bless you much.

WOW! I am a huge fan of all your films, but this one is in a class by itself! As always, your photography skills are amazing, with such a great mix of close ups, footage showing you hiking and at camp (along with all the coffee making which I can see you love:)) and drone shots. The transitions between the seasons took my breath away and also just made me laugh with the delight of it. Maybe you've done this, but I think you should submit this to a film festival, a prestigious one, not that I know a lot about that, but IMHO, it would be a winner. Thank you so much for sharing this!!!
BTW, would love to see you and Joey Coconato together again.
Hi Kate, thanks for taking the time to comment! (: I haven't submitted it to a film festival, and actually haven't thought about it before. To me it feels like it's not good enough.
I've watched Joeys video in the lot, that guy is great! Who knows ... (;
I want to comment on all your videos, but I'm always speechless and can't find the right words to explain the feelings, anxiety and sense of adventure that goes through me when I'm watching it. Your hikes are so rugged but the video's so flawless with beyond national geographic cinematic value. I'm so glad you're making these and continue to make it without deviating from your style. Infact, each film just tops the other. But each film is so unique. I usually have your channel playing on repeat. It's beautiful.
Thanks for sharing that with me, appreciate it. (:
Lol, the guy at the end is singing about a fighting, guns and killings ahhahah ... this is the best video so far
Hahaha, please translate that song for me! I've been trying to get the translation, but so far haven't been able to!
@@HarmenHoek he is mention a name i can't hear him well and than say "he took his gun out and he gave it a fire, he gave it a fire and killed Xhema and his brother" and then he mention a name Sadria and Hasimja (a woman's name) and some money, I can't hear very well what he is saying. These songs are real stories and they can be very difficult to "decipher" without knowing the context. The storytelling (real historical events) in songs is (at least was) a tradition in the Balkans among Albanians, Montenegrins and Bosnians. And you choose the best place of them to visit! These mountains were always a a cradle of Albanians. You saw it yourself how isolated they are and not a single enemy was able to conquer them because of the harshness and the best place to ambush the enemies 😆
some man are one man one band, you are one man one production company, it's just insane to see all this production, synchronization, perfection, you have the best videos I ever saw in UA-cam, and I just love even more for them to be "ambient films" 💚
Amazing as always, keep them coming!
I will, thanks for joining the premiere!
