The pick and roll wasn't flashy, but it worked. Also, the main reason it worked for the Jazz was because John Stockton could score. If he drew the defenders, then he'd pass it to Malone. If they left him open and ganged up on Malone, he'd shoot it. Simple but ultra effective.
That pick and roll was literally reinvented by John and the Mailman. They would do the pick and roll every time I saw them play and execute with perfection.
@@SuperRobertoClemente LEBRONZE IS NOT DURABLE. DONT COMPARE THAT SOFT DIVA WHO REST GAMES AND PLAY IN LAST DECADE MOST SOFTEST DECADE WITH GOD MAILMAN.
It's very unlikely that anyone will catch up to him anytime soon. LeBron is projected to play like 6 to 8 more years if he does not get injured. He'll end up in the top 5 sitting somewhere near Magic and Mark Jackson but nothing more than that because he has other tasks higher up on his priority list than that. Right now as of March 2017, LBJ is #13 on the list with 7,346 total assists. The only person that has a chance of taking a crack at the record is Chris Paul who now has a total of 8,114 assists sitting at #10 on the list. But he's had injuries and will most likely be injured a couple more times throughout his career. The next active player in the NBA that is near LeBron on the list is 32 year old Deron Williams sitting at #19 with 6,763 assists. Not much will be happening since he is only going to be a bench player/back up PG on the same team as LeBron who will be playing very limited minutes.
imagine: you know a pick and roll....likely coming. Stockton has the ball. if you cover him, good luck....he will either get past you, fake and shoot past you or he will pass. so, I used to think as a kid, ' double cover Malone'.....but that ensures Stockton will either shoot it (50%+ from the field) and probably make it, or he will go for the layup....and if the line for the layup closes, Stockton will pass it (seemingly like a Jedi or an X-man or something) without looking to the player you either forgot to cover or thought you had covered (usually Malone). Being from Spokane and having been to many, many Gonzaga Men's games....this is exactly the kind of ballgame Zags seem to thrive on. I guess I haven't been in awhile, so I'm sure the game evolved since then...so they might not still be in that same manner of play (Mark Few is still the coach, so maybe?)...but I used to love the technical way Zags, and Stockton and Malone, play. its amazing!
To ask how to stop "pick and roll" is just about to tell a guy to stop a person who got the answer to a question, you neither got or know the answer What Stockton-Malone did, is impossible to understand. Unless you're inside their head. If a player left Stockton to hide the pass to Malone, Stockton could shoot. If the player stayed on Stockton, Stockton would find Malone some way, and he would score'
Can't really argue with that, they were the best at p&r no doubt. The only thing I would add is Malone was so big & strong. I think he's what make it so untoppable.
TELEthruVOXx while that's true, it's also true no one but Stockton could pull so many passes to Malone. Everyone knew they were going to do the Pick and Roll, but no one knew in what of the 600 ways Stockton found Malone they'd do it.
Malone's defenders should have just sticked to Malone instead of anticipating a Stockton offensive move. Just let Stockton do a "Westbrook" and try to do things with the basketball other than PASS it to Malone. Granted he might have made a few J's and/or drove to the hoops a few times and did a "White Man Lay up". But if I were the opposing coach, I'd live with that. I'd live with Stockton trying to pull an Allen Iverson on me rather than him running an effective 90's offense.
Axle Gallardo The unique thing about their p&r was, Stockton basically was looking at every one, so if Karl's stuck on him, he got 4 other options. That was why the opponent most of the time switched when they ran it.
It's funny how Karl Malone said he didn't try to catch the ball pass every time but bat it down. When I was a kid playing in the front court my hands weren't the greatest so I used to slam the ball down, especially on the wild passes I used to get.
Jesus Christ Stockton and Malone in todays game that is wide open and no touching or no fighting is allowed. Forget it, they would run this league with the most ridiculous numbers anyone would ever see. At least 40ppg for Malone and 20 assts per game for John. I mean you can't touch them, and nobody plays the level of defense required to at least make it hard for them. It would be ridiculous, these two would put this modern nba to shame. And If John Stockton has as much freedom to bomb open threes or threes off screens as today, he would average at least 25ppg. The culture of todays nba is just bomb more 3s and get easy dunks and layups, because defense is virtually non existant, it is just a guy out there taking space but not doing anything useful with it.
The best pick and roll team of all time. They do not depend on alley-oops. It is not spoon feed. Most of pick and rolls today are done near the rim. John and Karl, because of their superior skillsets, they did it wherever they wanted to do it.
I'd have to disagree with that, I'd say the best duo was probably the mid-to-late-80s Celtics. Go back to some of those P&Rs and between Larry and Kevin Mchale, also with Robert Parrish and Danny Ainge who ran it pretty cut-and-dry and old-school.
stockton didn't need a bunch of fancy dribbling the entire possession as well, once malone was in position, stockton would just give an in and out or fake the screen or maybe a simple crossover, not like today where they just run the pick 10 times at the perimeter and just huck up a 3
If you didn't hedge Stockton, he'd drop buckets on you all night. Hedge him high, he's gonna find Karl. Rotate over to Karl on the backside, Stockton will find someone else.
Stockton & and Malone have changed basketball, they are the reason why pick and roll is guarded different nowadays. They deserved a championship ring but of course on the other side was Jordan...and on the same side were Ostertag, Foster, Eisley, Russell, Carr, Anderson....crappy players..
i like how sam mitchell is trying to talk his gameplan of how he would have stopped this pick and roll, no one could consistently guard they're pick and roll for the 20 years they played together , no sam mitchell is coming up with the counter defense.
Malone retired with the 2nd most points in history and no one can take that away from him, but I wonder how many moving picks/illegal screens were never called in his career. The plays in this video are text book, but there are other video compilations on UA-cam that make this a fair question, imo. Here's most of the current rule from the NBA playbook: A player who sets a screen shall not (1) assume a position nearer than a normal step from an opponent, if that opponent is stationary and unaware of the screener’s position, or make illegal contact with an opponent when he assumes a position at the side or front of an opponent, or (3) assume a position so near to a moving opponent that he is not given an opportunity to avoid contact before making illegal contact, or (4) move laterally or toward an opponent being screened, after having assumed a legal position. The screener may move in the same direction and path of the opponent being screened.
No doubt -their relationship is symbiotic though. Jon wouldnt have had all those assists if not for Karl. Those to were meant to play together...uncanny chemistry.
It's a big plus but u can't recreate a great finisher. U can replace Stockton with plenty of good passers but the person catching the ball has to be able to shoot outside and Finish it strong inside.
+Thomas Le nah you can't just replace Stockton. Stockton was one of the most fundamentally sound player in the game. You also can't replace the best passer in the game with a "good" passer
