  • In Part 3 of this series on Jerry Sloan's offensive system with the late 90s Utah Jazz, we cover the vaunted pick & roll sets that John Stockton and Karl Malone perfected, as well as some other pick & roll combinations from those teams.
    No matter how you defended the pick & roll, the 90s Jazz would find a way to execute their way into good looks. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    Great stuff. Being someone who watched every single game Utah played, there are 2 key elements to this offense. First off, you better have guards willing to set screens. Stockton set the best screens in the NBA. When they would run that rip cut, Stockton would nail the guy guarding Karl. Usually the defense had to switch it & that left their 1 guarding Malone in the post. Advantage Utah. But the main thing that made this offense work, specifically the pic & roll, is watch where Stockton is when he start the play. He is FT line extended EVERY time. They have won the play before it even starts by doing this. If the defense could've pushed Stockton 23 plus ft. out, that would immediately take multiple plays away from Utah. But for whatever reason Stock could always get into that sweet spot (FT line extended on the wing). When you're starting a pic & roll that close, it's almost too easy

    So glad you said hammer dunk ❤️
    I was a teen, in Australia, and I was so hopeful that the Jazz would knock off the all conquering Bulls
    It didn't happen, but boy was it a thrilling ride!
    Really fell in love with the Jazz at the time
    Thank you for this breakdown 💯

      Thank you Yahaly! I would love to do some 2014 Spurs someday. Off the top of my head they don’t have many full games on UA-cam, but maybe that will change or I can make a video based on highlights

    Excellent. You have such a great eye for details and context. Could you please do triangle offense with Bulls/Lakers with Phil Jackson/Tex Winter, or the Princeton offense in 2002 Kings/2003 New Jersey Nets. The third that comes to mind are the defensive schemes of Detroit Pistons 2004. Were those just good one on one defenders or good team defense?

      @DrawingTheDefense  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks! I actually do have a video on a specific subset of actions in the triangle, but it’s not that great so I do eventually want to do another vid on the triangle. And yeah actually you pretty much nailed all the teams I want to cover lol. Definitely 2002 kings and 2004 Pistons. I would say those Pistons teams had great individual defenders but the team concept is probably what made them great. All of these projects will likely take a long time so don’t expect them anytime soon but I do want to cover them ASAP

      @@DrawingTheDefense Great to know that 🙂 I couldn't find the video about the triangle among your uploads. Can you post the video link here? Thanks. You have a very distinct taste and eye for these things I hope one dau you willl be a part of some coaching team.

      There’s the video, it’s decent but unfortunately a lot of the examples end up being missed shots lol. I will probably come up with something much better in the future I just don’t know when

    Can you do college coaches too? I have a request for Mark Few, Gonzaga. He wins a lot and he's really neat to watch so that should be great.

    • @DrawingTheDefense
      @DrawingTheDefense  Рік тому +1

      I don’t really watch college ball to be honest but the one team I occasionally tune into is Gonzaga. I probably won’t do a Mark Few video but I will definitely keep him in mind!
