    Your real world experience is invaluable to us lowly home flight simmers.
    I have been using CH Products gear for years and it's always nice to hear that even experienced people like yourself still recommend their products.
    I wish some companies would come up with intermediary products between consumer and pro level gear ... wishfull thinking on my part probably as I'm not sure the market would be large enough for them to be profitable.
    Saitek's shoddy products are an abomination.

    I agree that the Saitek is far more durable but IMHO it doesn't feel at all like a real airplane yoke due to the hard center pitch detent. Too many years flying real airplanes may have made me too picky.

      Windoge the Honeycomb Aeronautical Alpha Yoke at $250 would be a nice and more affordable alternative . Should be shipping soon. I tried it at Oshkosh and it felt good just not as good as the Yoko... but it has switches the Yoko doesn’t

    The biggest problem with any of the sim yokes is that they do not have adjustable spring trim. In a real airplane there is no "center" position. "Center" is an arbitrary position that depending on airspeed and loading keeps the plane in level flight. To hold the yoke there you either fight the aerodynamic forces or you use trim. Changing trim does not move the yoke position! It merely relieves the pressure you are exerting to hold the yoke in that spot. On sim yokes you trim and then move the yoke back to it's "spring" center. Totally unreal. I did bash together a CH yoke a few years ago with a crank that would change the spring tension and thereby simulate an actual yoke. I would like to do that again on something a little more substantial. I am surprised the yoke manufacturers have not made any "real" yokes yet.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  6 років тому +1

      Ronald Monsen if you want the yoke to move as you describe you need a Force Feedback yoke like the Brunner. It cost st least twice what the Yoko costs. I personally haven’t noticed the issue you describe as that unrealistic for me. I guess I instinctively try to freeze the pitch and trim until I can release all yoke pressure and the pitch remains steady. With the Saitek yoke the centering spring detent is so strong it did seem unrealistic to me. I haven’t noticed it with the Yoko or CH yokes but that is just my opinion. I agree that if money is no object force feedback is best.

    • @monsenrm
      @monsenrm 6 років тому

      Not really Russ - at least for simple realistic trim. The trimming of the forces can be done with an adjustable spring. I have done that and it is totally realistic. I had a crank that would move the spring center fore and aft. However there is still the missing change of spring / force which is a result of changing airspeed. That, as you say requires force feedback. However, force feed back can be accomplished by "simply" increasing the spring tension dynamically. A motor that tightens the spring as a function of airspeed would do that. For basic trim, I understand that we don't really realize that we "fake" trimming on sims because as we "trim" we move the yoke unconsciously toward its spring center. I am too aware of that and hate it!

      $1000 for a non-FFB yoke is a travesty. Non-FFB yokes are TOYS. That includes PFC's ridiculously over-priced options.

  • @kylewinter9429

    You should look into the Honeycomb Aeronautical alpha flight control yoke, it’s affordable and looks to be the same quality 👍

      If it's better than the Saitek or CH yokes (which isn't difficult to achieve, they are crap), then the Honeycomb should be a good option.

    Hi Russ, Really nice setup you have there! I am actually looking at the Brunner which is a Force Feedback unit and corresponding Force Feedback rudder pedals to possibly go along with it. After flying a Level D 737-800, a 747-400, MD-80 and a 727 I am obsessed at taking my simming to the next level with a true Force Feedback yoke at least. Your monitor setup looks terrific - what monitors are you using?

    just test the yoke please like this :
    Move arround all axes and hold pressed one or more button's while moving. At same time look in Windows gamecontroller window if there is any contact loosing while moving and hold any button's pressed.
    That problem I had with 3 yoko Yokes!!! After the third I just get a refund.. now I will go back to Ch or Saitek.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  2 роки тому

      Yes but so far none have dazzled me. To me the Brunner just felt artificial and like it was fighting me. Not smooth like a plane. It may be that it wasn’t dialed in correctly.
      I think it may be like motion platforms… not sure the potential benefit is worth the complexity and cost.

    I've been considering getting a YoKo mainly for the Elevator travel it promotes. However, looking at their promotion Video, when they show the Range, they measure from the headbox, to the Yoke being fully out, as 144mm, but it looks like when they push it in, that half of that measurement has no range. I was wondering if it was possible for you to measure the Range from center to full out, and center to full in. Would be much appreciated =]

    Hi Russ.
    Thank you again for your video.
    I own a cessna Saitek yoke ( and a PPL-A ) and I struggle to reproduce the same feeling with it when landing, especially when flaring (holding the yoke). The yoke is too sensitive, sometimes the cessna climbs again or touches and climbs.. not smooth at all like in real (and this is not about the landing or.approach speed since I do exactly what I am doing in real life).. I got the conclusion that those yokes are not good for practising touch and go and even worse, can lead to bad habits , after, in real..
    How is the feeling with the yoko?
    I Would be happy to see a video of a landing on a Cessna and see if you can hold the plane until the stall before the touch down .

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 років тому +1

      David Weisbrod I agree that especially the Saitek yoke is quite unrealistic. I believe it has to do with the centering spring detent. The CH yoke has even weaker springs but without the detent I can easily do a near full stall landing as you describe. When my airline first got the B737-300 it was extremely heavy in pitch compared to the 737-200 we had. With a common type rating we often flew into the hub on one model and out on the other. Similar to the difference in the feel of a C150 and a C206. The feel is different but the sight picture is the same. Not necessarily bad training. I personally think your issue is the Saitek yoke with the detent that creates an inconsistent feel when applying pitch forces. I suggest you try the Yoko if you can afford it and if not the inexpensive CH yoke. Of course the Brunner yoke with Force Feedback is one of the best since the stick forces can be programmed for each airplane and the stick forces and position change with airspeed.... for about $2000US.
      As an aside I was totally frustrated with my early XPlane simming with the Saitek and at Oshkosh A2Z had a demo with the CH yoke. I tried it and knew instantly the Saitek was my problem. I still use the CH in my VR cockpit setup.

      @@rbarlow thank you again for your answer.
      Yes, the problem seems to come from the joystick. Sometimes when I am supposed to flare, it seems to be stacked in a center zone and I have to pull strongly to remove the yoke from that position.. the consequences are that, once this point will be passed, the yoke response is sreong again and the aircraft will climb a bit (even at less than 60 knots while in real the commands are supposed to be " looser" Because of the low airspeed on the surfaces)
      Would love to see a video focused on that with the yoko.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 років тому +1

      David Weisbrod just watch some landings on my channel. I had exactly the same issue you describe. I also had difficulty trimming if the yoke was near the detent. I don’t think the video you describe would be of much general interest because this is not a big problem with most other yokes and joysticks. Many Saitek users who are not pilots are not bothered by the detent since it is all many of them know so it doesn’t feel strange as it does for us. I fly XP and the landing flare to touchdown is very realistic with a good yoke. A sim (even multi million dollar airline sims I have trained in) will never feel exactly like a real airplane but in VR I think you can learn a lot about landings. Like where your eyes should be looking at various points in the landing and how to handle a balloon in the flare. Just get a new yoke and you will thank me... even a cheap plastic CH yoke.

      Yeah I’m anxious and still waiting. They were at Flight Sim Expo in Las Vegas so not really sure when we’re going to see their products. Guess they were having some quality issues and had to make some design changes late. If they can live up to their hype it really looks exciting though.

      Billy Jay I have set up a second cockpit solely for VR flights so my old you’re is still in service. The CH yoke is a good starter yoke since it has lots of buttons and Throttle/Prop/Mixture controls built in. This way you can wait to add the throttle quadrant for a while.
