I've driven a xc90 (not with this engine) and first thing I remember is how comfortable it is and the heated seats it was freezing that morning

Lovely car and drivetrain. I am impatiently waiting for delivery of a new Volvo V60 T6 Inscription with expected delivery during W.16.
Small tip for this car and drivetrain, use the navigation to let the car calculate where its most efficient to use the petrol vs electric motor given you set the drivemode to "Hybrid". This is said to deliver the best fuel efficiency possible.

Being a Plug-in Hybrid does this mean you can only recharge the car via a cable? Or will the car kick the engine in to recharge it?

the battery can be charged by the engine as well as a KERS (kinetic energy recovery system). If you're going down a hill it'll generate power for the battery by using the cars momentum.
