What "Lord of Chaos" the movie didn't show is Varg was in love with Euronymous (some Burzum songs reflect this). The prince of death said no. He ended dead and joined Dead.
Who knew that Mayhem doing a straightforward black metal album would end up being one of their better albums since DMDS, it's honestly better than Chimera, and a massive improvement over Esoteric Warfare and Ordo Ad Chao
The new Cattle Decap will be out in a couple of weeks. If you and Brad don't do a "no beef tag team review" for it, I'll fly to Canada just to slap you with a block of tofu !

**Kill** ha ha ha Anyways. I love this album. It fits so well with the old school "black" mixed with a clean sound. I've listened to it 3 times already. I really enjoy this album.

@@dumahdrummer654 Abrahadabra, someone on a metal forum posted a pic of it when a lot of us where questioning why they'd name an album that if anything sounds more Halloween and childish then anything.
Unfortunately the problem with that album is that it's so messy. The core new elements of what were different on that album are good, unfortunately there is still a remaining 50% of the whole production which is just unlistenable filler. Short: The style is incredible, but the substance put on the album is only like half of what a healthy runtime should have been. The core good parts are awesome, but few and far between.
This weekend has some heavy hitting albums. Mayhem, Hour of Penance, Fit for an Autopsy, etc. With all the other good stuff coming out next month, 2019 is finishing strong!
Dude... I am just so glad that this band is still going. The state of music right now is fucking pathetic... there are so few bands, in any genre, that still convey a TRVE sense of DANGER and PRIMAL Chaos. We are fortunate to still have MAYHEM, WATAIN, SHINING, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, KILLING JOKE... bands that are the REAL fucKin DEAL... AND TRANSCEND THROUGH MUSIC 🐺🤘🖤
Black Metal isn’t about riffs and solos . It’s about over all feel and message . You can’t lump it in with all the other kinds of metal where that kind of stuff is pretty much standard.
I don’t listen to much black metal. Always preferred blackend death stuff. Never really liked Mayhem bar the odd song here and there (they an acquired taste). But this album ! Its phenomenal.
Why do you say they were using their dead bandmate to promote this? That was like 16 years ago, and Necrobutcher is pissed when anybody trivializes it. Do you think Vinne Paul was using his dead brother to promote music? Tell that to his family.
While I don’t think this review is necessarily bad. I feel Blayne really didn’t want to review this and neither did Banger for that matter. They felt they had to and it comes through in this review. The statement about two ways a black metal band can go was bit ridiculous because that statement can be used for any sub genre of metal. Does a band want to be a Motörhead/Overkill/Deicide or does a band want be a Opeth/Enslaved/Amorphis. Either you try to reinvent your sound with every record or you stick with what you know. Granted there 100s of bands that stay in the gray area and those seem to be my favorites
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is actually easy to pronounce. Thing is, one needs to know how LETTERS are pronounced and that's something people in the anglophone part of the world don't learn in school.
Great review! About the lack of "rewind" guitar moments I'd like to add: there's some Euronymous missing here. I think he was the one driving the band to a more "riff oriented" sound. I also miss these great guitar moments with heavy riffs, something that pops up among all the other generic black metal sound stuff. Sure it's a great album and a big improvement if compared to the last ones. Maybe the best post-Euronymous effort. But it still misses that euronymous guitar thing...
“.....the ability to correctly record your instruments”. Yes I can’t stand listening to albums that .....” sound like they were recorded at the bottom of the ocean”. And anyone thats knowledgable about recording knows many of those necro sounding albums were recorded in quality studios. They just punched in the “necro” plug in on post production.
@SonOfOdin 88 I get it. I get it. However when one has QUALITY audio gear it's fucking annoying. There's a middle ground that can provide both. The new Mayem is an enjoyable listen. But it doesn't sound like a state of the art Melo Death release. As I said....there can and IS a middle ground. It's not 1995 and bands aren't recording on Fisher Price tape decks at the end of a tunnel anymore.
@@Assimilator702 Theres a huge difference between a "necro sound" and a artificially sounding album, the drums on this shit sound so flat and clicky that it reminds me of an ipod clicking through menus.
Helvete Ulver The sound on this album is raw but a quality sound overall. Do you play drums? Do you know the variety of sounds you can naturally get from a bass drum? I do and it sounds fine if that’s what Hellhammer was going for. The mix of the album sounds decent on high end audio gear. It’s not perfect but far from sounding like it was recorded with a cheap boom box and untuned drums like some bands have done in the past.
Chimera is probably my favorite Mayhem record. The riffs sound like Blasphemer was listening to a lot of King Crimson went he wrote them. I'll give this album a try.
