This was the third time I had seen QOTSA since last September and the first time at a festival. Based on this performance I won’t ever go to a festival performance again. They were scheduled to play 8-9.45, but they only put in 1 hour 20 minutes. Josh looked very drunk, had none of his usual wit and banter, and the rest of the band looked like they were really working to carry him. They did the basic “chart hits” set, without any deep cuts and cool stuff that the lucky Santa Barbara audience got a couple nights earlier. There wasn’t even any of the usual sing-alongs, like they weren’t having any fun. The blanket crowd mostly left. It didn’t seem like the right fit band for them. Maybe it was a bad setup being on the stage secondary to Ed Sheeran. I went from excited to dismayed at how drunk Josh appeared to be. And I’ve seen him perform when he said he was high - totally different. It’s probably no coincidence that the Bottle Rock social media highlight reel is silent for QOTSA and QOTSAs own instagram is acting like this show didn’t exist. I guess I should stick to the dedicated shows.
I think they got shafted on their audience due to the time slot; most people there that day were there for Ed Sheeran (who funnily enough had big time technical issues during the first part of his set). So Qotsa didn’t have the showing they deserved because of that where if they played the Offspring time slot, they would have had floods of people. I’m sure as a performer who regularly plays enormously larger crowds would have been a little bummed about the turnout they had.
As this was my first time seeing them live, I was very pleased with how well they played despite Josh’s markedly low energy compared to other live recordings I’ve seen.
I'm not a fan of festivals myself (especially here in the UK where even mid-summer the rain or wind can appear and bugger it all up), but it is sometimes the only chance you get to see a band. Daylight seems to take away the intimacy of it too - It's so much better when the dark comes. Everyone has their off days so of all people Queens are entitled to one now and again, and it seems like being stuck on the bill with a bunch of eager Ed Sheeran fans probably isn't the ideal place for them. Let's be honest, there are bands out there who would kill to be this good on a bad day.
You nailed it girl. Im a massive fan but i was a little bummed. I was front row but everytime i turned to see the crowds energy it was so low energy/lame. Josh didnt interact much with the crowd and i do believe they got fucked because of all the ed fans. I was shocked to see how the bottlerock ig page didnt promote them much as well as the qotsa page. This is why i wanted to go to the SB show :(
@@amandasorisho242 Indeed. I felt a little bummed. This was my fourth time to see qotsa. Josh was less "energetic" to his previous shows.
in fairness, i was at that sb show and agree that setlist was super special, but that was a pretty small venue so that’s why. watching this performance i felt like josh was on his game. Smooth sailing for example was absolutely killer. If youre gonna blame something blame tiktok. The crowds dont get it because their brains have been numbed by horrible tiktok trends so they dont know how to act at their first queens show. But guaranteed alot of that crowd will be hungering for a second show, because its like any culture its something you gotta get into and there just isnt as much money behind queens as there is ed
