What a great way to honor your designer hero in drawing inspiration from his creations for a whole epic series - Michele Clapton has done it perfectly and I will forever be grateful for that because he was my designer hero too. RIP Alexander. I was so heartbroken when he decided to end his life. And I think McQueen and his philosophies and how he wanted to portray women are absolutely in sync with the characters GRRM created, so who else should inspire the costumes of the strong women of this show? This quote of him describes the best the strong women of GOT: “I design clothes because I don’t want women to look all innocent and naïve… I want women to look stronger… I don’t like women to be taken advantage of… I don’t like men whistling at women in the street. I think they deserve more respect. I like men to keep their distance from women, I like men to be stunned by an entrance. I’ve seen a woman get nearly beaten to death by her husband. I know what misogyny is… I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.” ― Alexander McQueen Thank you for this wonderful video Heidi! It´s the best way to start a sunday morning.
I love. How Cersei wears armor when she's in most danger. Season 2 with Risk of Stannis attacking kings landing, s3 ends of war of 5 kings, She doesn't have metal for a few seasons and its brought back, albeit lightly in s6 for her coronation and 7. Then s8 promo she sports massive metal epaulets
Thank you for this well done, detailed video! I am a fan of Alexander McQueen, I watched that documentary McQueen on a flight and it is a very excellent film. The embroidery you showed at the end of the video is beyond amazing, OMG so beautiful! Also interesting to see the Yasimak from the museum, so much work involved in making the Yasimak and embroidery and it is superb, thank you again.
Thanks Goddess! I'm not certain if the Yasimak is still on display at the Met. It is part of their collection but I think it was featured in the Savage Beauty exhibit, not part of their everyday exhibits. 😁
I love all of these... except the funnel dress, aka the burrito dress. 😂 I get what they were going for, and I feel like it would have been a bit less divisive if the fabric had been a lighter color instead of a dark chocolate brown. It’s like her face, shoulders and collar bones were floating, pale smears between her brown tube dress below, her brown hair above, and the tall brown collar behind it! I think it might have worked if it had been made in a blue, green, or even a gold fabric. Have the secondary pattern color be the dark one, it would have really opened her up more I think.
I think Sansa's white wedding dress with the fur shawl could have been inspired by Sarah Burton's work for Alexander McQueen in the AW 2011 collection!
Cerceis new costume looks like the skeleton/spine of a White Walker and its looks similar with what the NK and his WW generals always wear black suits with some much mysterious and haunting details.
It looks similar, but Clapton has recently said that it's meant to look like an exoskeleton to show that you can see into her soul, and it is very dark.
It seems like there were a few times when the GOT designer mentioned McQueen as inspiration, but overall the video creator seemed to find examples of the designer's work and assume it was so. I wanted to hear how the costume designer expressed their inspiration instead of it being the video creator saying a dress was most likely the inspiration. It's fun for an idea, but doesn't seem to be factually true.
Sadly, Michele doesn't do a costume by costume breakdown in her interviews. Perhaps we will know more when her book comes out in November. You can find that in the description.
Thank you for the video, Costume Co! After the GOT era dies down, would you be interested in going down memory lane and cover The Tudors? Ann Boelyn's costumes and Catharine of Aragon's are gorgeous but always wondered how authentic to the period they are.
OMG I've had it on my list of shows to do for ages. I'm hoping that I can get back to some of these other shows once the season is done. TY so much for commenting. 😁
Hi sister, I haven't been putting it in my videos of late, usually just share it out on social media. I might go back to doing it in the near future. :)
@@Costume_CO Bad Romance came out in 2009 and in the music video, Lady Gaga wore those Alexander McQueen shoes. She also owns three pairs of the armadillo shoes he designed. Of course this is not relevant to Game Of Thrones but it's pop culture in general. I love the outfits Cerci wears in the later seasons.
I love this speccially your discovery of Sansa inspiration wedding, season 8 & Cersei season 8 I've no idea Sansa's outfits was also inspired by Mcqueen is a mini Cersei in a way. I loved it I also think Mcqueen did better with the burrito gown For some reason I was Unsuscribe 😱😱 I've hace heard of youtube unsuscribing from channels but never happened to me
I always thought Margaerys burrito dresss symbolized her sexual modesty or lack there of the homosexual Renly. As if a chasity Cage albeit ironic due to them never consummating In contrast to her dresses in king's landing. Showing skin for her king to seduce or distract. She was most covered with Renly. Near naked with Joffrey, she wasn't that far north when she was with Renly do I don't blame climate
Quang Nhật well said. With Renly she had no need to seduce him they were allied with the extension of her brother Loras who truly loved Renly But with any Tyrell even sincere niceness always has to be beneficial
That's not what Clapton indicated. If you remember, she's wearing the other Tyrell look with the plunging neckline when Brienne fights Loras. And the King's Landing dresses are to piss off Cersei.
@@Costume_CO My favorites are Margaery and Cersei, my two favorite characters. When I watch the show I always notice the fashion, the way the fabrics move and react. I could never get a really good look at the footwear of the ladies of Thrones, on the account of their long dresses and trains.
Hi Nikki, I will likely get to Sansa's new costumes as the season 8 rolls out. Here is our livestream where we look at all of the promo pics: ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=y4Tj_dmtK-0
China, India, Turkey, and Japan = all countries. I can see it. Which country in Africa was McQueen inspired by? Chad in Central Africa, the most culturally diverse country on Earth according to Pew research, has more than 100 ethnic groups alone amongst just 8.6 million people. People in different parts of the African continent have different forms of dress and adornment.
Hi Veronica, I believe that McQueen based the neck rings and also the neck bodice (both not seen in the video) on the Ndebele people of South Africa. I haven't explored all of his collections, but there are likely other examples. If you watch my Black Panther video, I explain this as inspiration for the neck rings of the Dora Milaje.

Yes, sort of shows how stark raving mad she's become. She must have to turn sideways to get through doors.
McQueen and GoT in one video? Oh girl, you do like to spoil me don't you! 😘😘😘😘😘
Why are you up so late??
@@Costume_CO Because my internal clock is shot to shit.
It's so interesting to think about Cersei "rotting from within" while being pregnant and growing new life.
Great video!
Maybe it's a shadow baby!
Well, her baby is causing her to become more paranoid than usual and to isolate herself so she is rotting within.

Yup, agree 100%.
Wonderful video. ( I couldn't help laughing that 4:10 is considered Ready to Wear lol).
Yes, the fashion world is odd.

Thanks Bill! Do you have a link? I looked through that season and I'm not sure which one you are referring to. 😁
😘 Alexander, such a talented soul! .. and so are the got costume people too.. Great video, thank you! Hugs & sunshine 🌞 N

My all-time favorite..Alexander Mcqueen inspired -The Legendary!

@@Costume_CO Yessssss! You made my day!! So excited :)

How can you mention McQueen and not mention Gaga? Anyway the video was awesome. It's cool to see what inspires designers.
Can you give me an example?

The shoes are often quite simple because they are mostly hidden under the gowns. Dany's boots have pretty much been the same since season 1.
Oh, please, do Sansa's costumes including season 8 promo photos

Margery’s Dress was still the fugliest dress on GoT.
Hey, that's my word! 😋
Omg, yes. I completely agree. Lol.
misscatalina711 in contrast I'd say she's had the best and worst dresses! Her wedding gown during purple wedding deserved more camera time.
Ugliest dress ever on GOT. A dress shouldn't detract from the beauty of the actress.
I get what Clapton was doing, but it didn't really work IMHO.
