  • Trail poles can save you a lot of energy on the trails, but you need to know how to use them correctly.
Gregory Vollet, a trail runner and athlete manager at Salomon, shows you the right technique to run efficiently with poles. Whether you plan to use them for downhills, for overcoming obstacles, or simply to keep your balance, using poles can be tricky. But learning the right technique will greatly help your performance on steep and rocky terrain.
In this video, Gregory explains how to boost your uphill efficiency with 3 different techniques that can be used, depending on the terrain and your speed. You will also learn how to run faster by using the energy trail poles save. Poles are becoming increasingly light and can be folded in 2 or 3 points, making them easy to transport. You will find out how to easily carry your poles when you are not using them.
To quickly learn how to use trail poles when running or training, listen to Gregory’s advice and watch his technique!

Best thing about collapsible poles in a quiver is you look like Robin Hood running from the law.

Are there certain metrics when poles make running more economical like grade of inclines or length of race, percentages etc? Do the same people sometimes run with poles and other times not, or do you rather have people who always run with poles and then others who never do? Are poles allowed in all or most trail races? So many questions (; thanks for the video!

In addition to using them on hills, poles are useful when you're really drunk.

The Salomon quiver has two hooks at the top that attach to small loops at the top of the straps on some Salomon vests. The cord at the bottom is then run through a loop at the bottom of the pack. Don’t tighten too much or you won’t get the poles in or out.
For other packs you can run a Velcro strap, the type used to keep cables tidy. Run the Velcro strap through the hooks and then under the vest strap.

What if I’m old and not a very good runner and am better at eating pastry?
