“ So you’ve bought all this stuff, where do you start? ...don’t be afraid of it, paint mixing is not a dark art...” Oh, yes, I HAVE bought all this stuff and my sister told me to stop being a “paint supply junkie” and start creating. Peter, you have a valid point regarding hesitation. I try to view the action of painting as an adventure, since I it’s easily discover how time flies once the brush hits the paper, losing myself in the wonder of color and wash. Many thanks for the encouragement, Cheers!
Thanks for the comment Wo... 'Paint Supply Junkie'... what a great expression! You're absolutely right, of course... every painting is, and should be seen as, an adventure. If you can lose yourself in its wonder, and find the process immersive, then you're totally doing something right.
Arches is about the most expensive paper you can buy - it's lovely to work on, and is one of my all-time favourites - but I more commonly use Saunders Waterford because it shares the same properties, and is much, much cheaper. Beginners get through tons of paper, naturally, so it makes no sense to splash out on the gold-plated stuff. The only thing I would say is to avoid 'Practice paper'... if you want cheap and cheeful, but also practical and robust, buy Bockingford.... (oh - and paints... my recommendation would be 'White Nights'). Thanks for the comment, Paul - very much appreciated!
A simple composition (like the one created in this video!) with tonal contrast and balance is so much more appealing than "visual gibberish"! But keeping a painting simple is a challenge and the mark of a true artist.
Great video for watercolor beginners! I'm a watercolor artist and an illustrator and I agree with your tips! I would add that for a begginer, paints and brushes are not so important... they can be the ones for school.. Most important thing is to just sit or stand and just start painting! Thank you for sharing! 💗🤩💗
Indeed... working with even the most humble of tools is enough to gain experience... the learning curve is the same no matter how much you've invested in them. The most useful learning aid is practice (I always encourage students to try and learn to love the process and not to focus too much on the results - they can be honed later...). Thank you for the comment Mary - it's very much appreciated! (lots of lovely colourful icons, too...)
So true... all too often I see students crippled by their - unjustified - excessively high expectations of themselves. Watercolour is an organic process that needs to be given space to just happne, and develop, and yes... it should just be fun... May thanks for the comment ELJ...
Thanks Peter I'm only just beginning to explore watercolour and discovering it's very different from acrylics. Watching you paint that simple scene really helped me grasp your earlier techniques & tips. Overall an excellent tutorial thank you ... & g'day from Australia 🐨 🐾
I always am impressed by advice you give beginners. Practice will show results. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ve never stopped learning. Your videos show me new things or remind me to practice the fundamentals. That’s why I follow your channel. That and I enjoy your work ! Thank you from across the pond!
Thanks for that - I'm pleased you enjoy the content, particularly if you find it helpful. The thing about watercolour is - no matter how many years you do it, it never fails to surprise and challenge in equal measure (and no-one knows it all... some just think they do...). Great feedback, Miller - thank you!
Always enjoy your channel. Always enjoy you and I enjoy your technique which is similar I know but In a way quite different from the technique of North American watercolour Artists.
Thanks Lorna - I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Much of my early watercolour learning came from my ex-art tutor Wilfred Ball (sadly no longer with us) who, in turn, confessed to gaining a lot of his inspiration and techniques from the North American watercolourists... such is the great circle of art...
Thank you so much for this video! I am new to watercolor and the advice to keep it simple is brilliant! There are so many variables in watercolor that just producing a simple painting is difficult. I managed this morning to replicate your painting and I'm pleased with the results.
Merci beaucoup. I'm a french beginner and I enjoyed this video and your accent 😁 I must remember to do simply, that's one of my problems with watercolour 😉 Thank you again
Thanks for that So Sorka - vous êtes le bienvenu - watercolour is easy to overwork - consciously reducing your painting time can be one way to improve on that - thanks for the comment!
Thanks for your video, I love yr video very much.. I have tried to start painting a yr ago, and bought lot of watercolor material at home😅...I don't know how to start or what is going to start or draw..

Nature documentary... I seem to get that a lot... thanks Ana - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!

🎉🎉 lovely colourful touch
Agree with your advice 100%. Bored being told to buy Arches paper and artist quality paints when everything I do is still just a practice. 👍

Only 5 seconds of Peter’s video and I give a like, no matter the subject ! Just keep going Peter, thanks for sharing and stay safe.

I actually found that better supplies made a huge difference not only in my enjoyment, but in my learning process.

Fabulous information and beautifully put together in a video. Thank you Mr. Woolley💖

i never fathomed the effect of adding the burnt sienna to the mountains. thats mind boggling.
