Garage Hack! How to charge a completely dead battery.

  • This trick is going to make sure you don't throw away a battery for no reason and waste a bunch of money.
    Most newer battery chargers won't charge a battery that is completely dead. Or even if they are half dead for that matter. Their "Smart Sensors" need to detect a certain level of voltage before they will begin to charge. Therefore the "Bad Battery" light on the charger is useless if the battery is just discharged.
    I'm going to give you some options for how to make that happen. Particularly my favorite, which is number 3 in the video.

    Turn your park lights on hook up to the charger and it should charge.

      That’s interesting, I’ve never heard that? The theory being if you apply an amp draw to the battery it will charge?
      Also, you are giving some of the junk rods I work on waaaaay too much credit if you think they all have working parking lights lol.

      @@CatfishMotorsports 🤣😂🤣 I’m 68 years old and I have worked on trucks cars and heavy equipment for 55 years. Installed my first truck engine in a 1954 Ford dump truck at the age of 12 without any help. It was a once in a lifetime experience and my dad was really surprised when he turned the key and it started and all he had to do was adjust the clutch.

    Couple of wires off a Milwaukee battery and you can jump the charger that way.

      Yeah that’s the same type of deal as using another car battery. It will work.

    Funny thing seeing this video this morning, Been very cold last few weeks here in Alaska, my truck usually just sits through the winter. Battery getting so low can't even open automatic doors and lock freezes. Manually pop hood and jump starts right up. Anyway, was just thinking of doing EXACTLY what you just showed as battery is on 2 years old. At least I'll know if it's toast, which I doubt as stated it jump starts as soon as cable are added.

      Yeah, it’s useful for exactly that. Check out the video I did right after this one the NOCO chargers that claim to charge down to 1 volt. I do think there are some battery failures they have a hard time detecting, but they do indeed try to charge down way lower than most other chargers. Reasonably priced too. Might be a good thing for you in frigid temps.

    Watching your video and reading the comments, without being controversial and a fellow Pontiacker just putting it out there, one has overlooked a few important steps which was not offered up here. One realizes this video might just be a quick reference for the already-tree-shaded mechanic, but this video will be recommended to the myriad of immature saplings that think GTA-V is a driving instruction video tutorial. One having battery problems wants to first grab a DVOM to check the voltage remaining, just as one did, in order to properly begin diagnosis, but one overlooked an additional DVOM test that has to be performed before concluding that connecting the charger/jumpers is the next step. After checking voltage, one would be remiss to not select DVOM ohm/resistance to determine the presence of sulfation/internal continuity to then proceed repair from there. Skipping that step can present an unplanned, unexpected, internal self-disassembly sequence of the battery, and can also cause new damage to the charger/jumping vehicle's electronic software and hardware, too. Another step overlooked, or just possibly skipped over for this video, was that one having battery issues should check the physical condition of the cells by removing the service caps checking that the electrolyte level is above the substrate and topping up with distilled water if below before going forward with any repair. Again, just looking out for the tiny saplings that tend to destroy everything they touch by spraying the interior surfaces with neon colors or cambering their wheels excessively, but they kind of do deserve whatever they get, kind of.

      That is a thorough comment my friend!
      I’ll have to look up the rapid disassembly part and the ohm test. I’ll admit that’s a new one to me.
      Funny (or not so funny) I managed to get battery acid in my eye once removing the caps. Dumbass move not wearing safety glasses on my part. So I’m generally reluctant to tell people to do it.
      I kinda look at it more that this is a high percentage solution. If this doesn’t result in a charged battery, you can likely just call it a core. But yes you can get in the weeds and do some more in depth checks for sure.
      Thank you for watching!

      @@CatfishMotorsports The acid splash is a bit concerning, but one can just lay a newspaper or junk rag over screwdriver and cap to prevent unintended eyewash. My own anecdote of Battery by battery is exactly that internal resistance subject. Pulled a customer car in for No Crank and determined no power, hooked up battery charger to it- a good one as discussed- and turned around to turn on charger. The battery exploded quite ceremoniously and immediate but luckily just disintegrated in mostly upward blast pattern from inside the fender well that brought all other techs running and ultimately laughing... ha... ha. Batteries are more durable than many think and can be brought back from a lot of deaths. But one really has to respect that internal resistance and those fantastic electrolyte fountain features!

      @@CatfishMotorsports Oh yeah, a big one many are unaware of is that battery acid and corrosion can easily be washed/rinsed away by hot water... That simple. Yes, baking soda water is efficiently better but not always on hand. All parts and aspects of a car are all equally important to be well knowledgeable of.

      @@fyrbyrd71 My case was trying to revive one by replacing the catalyst (didn't work in this case) but there was a little bit of the liquid on the rim around the cell holes. When I popped the cap back in place it snapped down hard, into that small puddle. Splashed right into my eye. Again, stupid on my part not to be wearing glasses when I knew I was working with a corrosive material.
      But yeah, I see people locally selling refurbished batteries if you provide them your bad core. So Im sure they can be revived. I just didn't have luck when I tried to do it myself. I did get to spend 20 minutes in my shower flushing my eyes out though lol.

    Good video. Noco Genius 1, 2 , 5 and 10 smart chargers have a force mode to charge a dead battery below 1 volt, and the 5 and 10 models have a repair mode to help desulfate a battery. Pulse Tech makes chargers that desulfate by using a patented frequency, I use a Pulse Tech PowerPulse passive battery desulfator and maintainer to keep my battery in my 2001 BMW from sulfating. You should do a video on desulfating your battery.

    • @CatfishMotorsports
      @CatfishMotorsports  6 місяців тому +1

      Funny you say that, because I just bought a NOCO genius 1 specifically because it said it will charge a dead battery. I was going to do a test with it this weekend.
      My big charger has an annoying habit of switching from 2amp to 40 amp on its own. I’m afraid it might burn up the ECU on my Terminator x. So I wanted the dedicated 1 amp tender for that.
      I will for sure look into the desulfating tech.

    I've never heard of a charger that needs to see 10v to start charging, it's usually around 5. The easy way to get one going is to connect it to the dead battery, then use jumpers from a charged battery and just touch the leads to the terminals. It usually only takes a couple seconds to get the charger going and then it keeps charging.

    • @CatfishMotorsports
      @CatfishMotorsports  6 місяців тому +1

      My big one clicked off with the battery at 8v. I’ve never had any luck just touching them. I’ve always had to leave both sheets of cables on for a while.
      I think it’s easier just to let it charge for 5 minutes off another vehicles alternator with the jumpers and then put it on the charger, rather than finagling two sets of cables together.
      Check out my video on the NOCO charger. I charge down to less than 1v. That’s my new solution.

      Don't put a battery directly onto concrete / the ground.
      Put battery on a block of wood to charge or store.
      Battery will drain, otherwise.
