This song is the title track from their debut album. It wasn't a massive hit, but did OK, it's a favourite with older muse fans though who were there at the beginning of there career. This specific show had the set list picked by the fans, so there are some tracks in this show that muse hadn't played in years, decades in some cases.

Indeed, Showbiz was the song that really got me into Muse, about 22 years ago!
They hardly ever play it live so this was a real treat. I'm very nearly 40 and I never heard it on the radio in the UK though.

When you get to 9 studio albums, SO much of the playlist is taken up with songs from each album that are kind of expected to be played. This is a fan favourite that often gets overlooked for a slot, and it was a 'by request' gig. So any/all the songs played that night were heavily voted on by the audience beforehand meaning they all gonna be super popular with the crowd that night.

"Was this a popular song?" To liken it to movies: This song is like a cult classic film. Wasn't well received by the general masses but it was really well recieved by a core group of fans who love it to this day.

Certainly not a popular/hit song, but is considered to be one of the favourites amongst us Muse fans.
I would say it's in my top 10, but that's a tough one! It's from their first album by the same name.
I love the rawness of this song, and the build up.

Loving this review! So pumped you enjoyed it! I had a hunch you might be more accepting of his falsetto here than in some other Muse takes you've seen.
A couple of facts (and answers)
-This was actually a fan-made video from purely fan captured videos. Muse usually gives the fanbase a "Christmas gift" every year, and they gave the pro-audio to the fans to lineup with the video!
-This was a small gig where Muse had fans vote for deep cuts in their catalogue. Showbiz had not really been played much (if at all) in 11 years at the time, and the fans probably were most stoked for this one.
It is from their debut album "Showbiz", 1999. I have never once heard it on American radio or anything, but definitely a hit amongst fans. That explains Matt saying "ohh it's a killer, it's a killer" at the end. He knows it's good, I do think it strains his voice though, so they keep it a rare treat.
-They played it a half-step down (I think) and I personally like this version best. Others may disagree! I thought you'd like the energy of this performance and the crowd being bad-ass as well.
-Watching a few performances from Muse this week (they're back), they have a new "4th instrumentalist", and you can visually see Matt and him making sooooo many visual queues, as they develop chemistry.
-The ending on the album kind of fades out with some drumming that mimics the intro, but here, they just added a jam from another older obscure Muse song.

One important consideration for this song is it is very taxing vocally - has a lot of high notes and powerful wailing. They released their first album when Matt was 19 or 20 years old, he is now in his 40s and of course his voice has changed over the years. The studio version of this was the first Muse song I heard and I was entranced, playing it back over and over for a good few hours. It is absolutely beautiful.

this was one of their "fan concerts" where you could vote for which songs they were going to play and this was one of those that won. They dont usually play it, even though its their most requested song, I guess cause it takes a strain on the singers if he had to play it for a whole year EDIT: also the outro is another muse song called "Ashamed"

Showbiz wasn't a hit for the band, but it's grown popular amongst fans due to its very satisfying build-up, and also for Matt hitting one of his highest notes at the end (I think around G#5). Also, as Muse have evolved and their catalogue of songs has expanded, it's become increasingly rare for Muse to play this song live, which may also be in part due to how challenging it is to sing.
So on the rare occasion Muse does play it, fans tend to go wild. I've been lucky enough to see this song live twice and both times the performance and the atmosphere was incredible :)

As a Muse fan, I would say this song is everyone's favorite song that took the time to really listen to muse. When the album Showbiz came out the top 3 tracks of the album were Muscle Museum, Uno, and Sunburn. So this song is definitely a hidden gem within the album. ALTHOUGH muse is a huge band- for those that love all of their music we base old muse off this and their "space rock" phase.

As others have mentioned, this was a by request concert where ticket holders could vote for which songs they wanted Muse to perform, so most if not all of the attendees were hardcore fans. This led to a semi organized movement in social media to have the older less played songs as well as the never performed live songs at the top of the list. It was pretty hype for us Muse fans as some deep cuts were brought up.
It only has happened in Europe (UK and France) though, in the US we still only get the preset setlists containing their current album or biggest radio hits with the rare deep cut song thrown in.

This is the Muse I know and love. From the perspective you where asking the question from, no this is not a popular song, I doubt it played on radio much at all and I'm not sure but I doubt it broke top 100. But, from the fan base pov it's absolutely popular and a great song to hear live because of the energy you mentioned. I was surprised about your thoughts on Matts falsetto, I know this song well and before I saw your thoughts was waiting for you to say you didn't enjoy it. As for the solo, what I think is the solo to this song Matt is nowhere near the mic, however the melodic singing he does after I guess can be described as a vocal solo imitating a guitar, this is better seen in live performances of Muscle Museum. Glad you enjoyed this song from their debut album.

It was the first album they released as well. I really like their first two albums and when they were still not "stadium" size band, they played those first two albums in clubs and the atmosphere was of the roof. Saw them three times and the last time they already found their style that they represents nowadays and I'm not really buying that anymore. Too pop to my taste! David, This was the title track from the very first album. For the best sing along I would say ‘Plug in baby’ gets the best crowd response.. Muse present themselves as a 3 piece but on stage they are always a 4 piece with a multi instrumentalist called Morgan Nicholls lurking in the shadows usually well off the camera tracks. Muse’s songs are too complex to do with just three and whilst Matt plays all the guitar and keys parts on the albums he needs help on stage. Morgan shuns the limelight and is seemingly quite happy to sit in the background but his contribution is essential particularly on synth parts in the big production numbers.

It’s an old song they rarely perform, this was the first time live since 2006 because it’s so demanding on Matts vocals.

It's not a popular song per say, it wasn't even a single.
But it is a popular song among fans. It's one of the three most popular songs from their first album (among fans). Most fans would put it in their top 10/20.

Amazing song but you should have taken an older show (around 2000-2001), Matt’s voice isn’t really fitting the song nowadays

I chose this take because of the energy, and I personally like this version most, sonically. I 100% love all the early 2000 versions. The two in "Origin Of Muse" are two of my favorites, but consider my choice here a strategic one, as I don't think DH would have liked the higher pitched earlier performances as much as this one. And again, personally this is MY favorite, especially since "Muse France" put together this epic crowd sourced multicam, with Muse then throwing them the bone of pro-audio.

Zenith performance is better. Not sure why people recommend a bootleg version when proshots exist.

    • @wewantthecup
      @wewantthecup 2 роки тому

      1. This is not a purely bootleg version. The audio was directly from the band. The video is fan-made, but arguably better than the pro-shot Zenith video. Thought the video was spot on.
      2. "better" is your opinion, not fact. Would DH have liked Zenith better? I highly doubt that. I thought he'd prefer the darker, lower tones, and more mature vocals. So that's why I recommended it. And he sure seemed to enjoy it.
Not sure why people have to act like such snobs. Why don't you pay $100 and make a request, so we can see what your superior requesting looks like?
