    Errata: I re-tested Plex this evening. Video playback does in fact go to the proper framerate and HDR mode even with a 4k MKV. But the lossless audio is not being passed through like it does on the Shield TV - so lossless ATMOS audio, etc does not appear to be properly decoded.

      What I’ve read is the atmos issue is the opposite. ATV won’t pass “encoded” atmos but will send it as multichannel “decoded” audio. PCM audio gets stripped of the atmos height info.

      Only the Shield plays nice with Atmos tracks from 4K blu-rays, unfortunately.

    Great information! My Apple TV can do 4k 24p and my TV can accept 24p. Any people think perhaps it will give the best picture by setting them both to 24p? To my surprise 24p is pretty smooth, but has a bit more grains, possibly a hair more clear.

    I got myself an Apple TV 4K this week after watching this video, I own the Nvidia Shield 2017 model, as well as the Fire TV 4K Max, And those two won't switch the frame rate to 24p like the video here mentions, The feature to change to 24p mode across all streaming service was a must, and its what made me decide to get one, And so far I'm satisfied with how it performs.

    Judder is a big problem on my otherwise great LG OLED. (My Sony could make any content play smoothly but I sold it.) Setting the ATV to match content frame rates not only solves for judder, it also makes features like motion smoothing work better. The only downside is that the screen frequently blanks for a second when the frame rate changes.

      Sony is having the same issue, the last few firmware updates have broken 24p content. Even with their 2021 models.

    I had just about every streaming stick platform running alongside my 2017 Apple 4k TV since it came out. By now, I’ve given up on all of them for an Apple TV/Xbox S that runs like a dream. Yes, you pay more but streaming sticks are cheap for a reason, (lack of updates, lag, quickly becoming underpowered, I could go on and on). I think people look too much at the savings on the streaming device by itself instead of looking at the full package with the TV. And the AFS switching on Apple has no rival.

      Firestick does have frame rate match on the newer models but it only works on prime video & plex. Netflix, Disney+ Discovery+ all don't match frame rate and that jittery motion in 24p content does my head in.

    This was right on! I have Nvidia shield pro, Roku ultra and Apple TV 4K and just like you said the Apple TV has the smoothest picture no matter what you watch the Roku is a very close second and the Nvidia shield stutters like crazy which bothers me to no end! I use the Roku as my main source of entertainment because it stutters very little to none at all and it passes through all the audio without transferring it to pcm like Apple. Don’t know why the Roku plays smoother than Nvidia shield on my tv which is the lg cx oled. Strange I know but I’ve tried every setting on the Nvidia shield and TV combination and nothing works, keeps stuttering. Oh well just thought I’d add that in case anybody else is having the same problem. Also just wanted to mention it’s running through the Sony 1080 receiver which I’ve changed all those settings as well like 4:4:4 or auto and changed the inputs to enhanced but still stutters.

    As I said in my comment in your device review, apple is best for features, performance and support. Apple does a great job supporting this product. I never has any problems. I started using one 2007 and my last model is from 2017. We have about 4 older models and everyone one exception is the mode 1 (2007). No problems getting updates. I can’t say the same for the rest. Never could get phone support from Amazon. You have better luck get help by watching you channel. Sure you pay more but it’s a long term investment. My 4K model is still working great and it’s 5 years old , I have no need to buy a new model. Can other devices do the same?

    I've seen a 24p mode on the 2009 Panasonic Plasma TV I use. More accurately frame rate setting when changing display settings while connected to a pc. I never understood why it was there and your explanation kinda makes sense with 24p shot movies and shows. I probably don't get the juddger because either 1) sortware masked it decently for me to not notice; or 2) I play more 30fps and 60fps content and just don't encounter 24p ones much.

    Great video again! Think this is what I've resorted myself to as well, having 2 devices. Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) for Plex, then once I find a good deal on the Apple TV 4K (2021) I'll buy one for everything else. You'd think 24p would be on the top of everyone's spec list haha.

      I do still love my shield for emulation game streaming and the likes, also the better audio output for certain stuff.
      But Apple TV is really the easiest if your in the eco system.
      AirPods, HomeKit notifications it just seems so easy and well done.
      Nvidia I think kinda put the shield on the back burner.
      My 2 cents.

    Hi, Lon!
    Thanks for the update. 😊
    Because of this issue I switched from SHIELD TV to the Apple TV 4K for all video playback.
    The best network video player for Apple TV 4K by far is Infuse Pro, for me the perfect replacement for Plex, but tastes may differ.

    Not sure about the 24 fps issue but the Infuse app seems to be the enthusiast plex experience on Apple platforms. They recently added spatial audio. Passing Encoded Atmos seems is an Apple issue with it getting outputted as multichannel pcm?

    I got this to work with my apple tv once, but now it doesn't. I reset the video settings and try to set it up again, and the only "unverified" formats are 60fps and 50fps. Last time I did it, I saw those two as well as 24fps and I think a few more. So something seems to have changed for the worse.

    I was looking to buy a Shield because it seemed to do basically everything. Seems like a perfect setup would need an Apple TV for steaming services and a Shield Pro for your own movies and in-home streaming. That’s a lot of money though. Since I’m mainly concerned with streaming services and renting digital movies, I’ll probably just get the Apple TV.

    This is the video, I’ll show my friends/colleagues who don’t get why I love the Apple TV. ❤️😅 the killer feature.
    The new 2022 version will also introduce QMS (quick media switching) via VRR (variable refresh rate). To avoid blackouts for 2-3 seconds. When switching.
    My combo is Apple TV for streaming and then a proper Panasonic UHD player. With this me and my AVR is happy 😃

    The shield remote has a feature that will let you set a button that you double press to go into beta mode after you set it without going to a menu setting every time. Usually the screen will black out for a moment and then return to the correct frame rate if supported. When used on Amazon prime video the screen blacked out and a message appeared saying something was wrong. Overall beta worked with the dedicated button push.

    One slight problem with Apple tv unless they fixed it since last I checked, it switches to 23.97 which is the most common frame rate but some European or asian movies are in 24, which it doesn't support so it switches to 23.97 and you get a skipped frame every certain amount of seconds

    • @drdelewded
      @drdelewded 2 роки тому +2

      PAL is 25fps not 24fps
      24fps is film
      PAL 25fps is European TV or Video standard
      NTSC 30fps (acutally 29.97fps and 23.97fps converted) is North American TV (Video standard)
      So its actually closer to film standard

    • @pedromvuus
      @pedromvuus 2 роки тому +1

      @@drdelewded not talking about PAL, that correctly switches to 50 in my display, I did a search and apparently it was fixed in tvOs 14.5, they mention the Irishman as one of such movies and I can confirm it's no longer an issue, even if you go to the settings there both 23.976 and 24 options which wasn't the case before

    • @drdelewded
      @drdelewded 2 роки тому

      @@pedromvuus My overall point is ALL film films are shot 24fps not just European and Asian... (minus a few exceptions shot showscan or IMAX) And digital films are either PAL or NTSC (secan too I guess) But then, if wanted, transferred to film at 24 fps (for the film smooth look) but then digitzed back to PAL/NTSC

    Every time I try the auto frame rate switching on the FTV, it seems it noticeably slows the startup time for videos. I often just turn of the setting, since I never really notice a difference in the video, but do notice the difference in startup times, dropping back to the main GUI, etc..

    There's also a weird problem with Netflix I discovered. To get 4KHDR you need to set your TV or monitor to 60hz. If you try setting it manually to 24hz or anything lower than 60, it defaults to 1080p. So it looks like getting true 4k24fps with HDR from Netflix is impossible.

    I have a 2020 Vizio P Series Quantum. There was a recent update on it that almost completely makes Dolby Vision unwatchable, but that’s another discussion. It’s a pretty good tv overall, but I’ve been having frame rate issues since day one. I need to manually switch to 24p when I use AndroidTV. For the Roku, it’s like you said, the apps don’t automatically switch to 24p especially when I use HDR. I actually have to turn on Auto Low Latency on the gaming section of the tv to prevent stuttering, but this possibly causes audio issues makes it out of sync on movies. However, they’ve really improved HDR10 on it so it’s at a better quality viewing wise, but at the cost of Dolby Vision not working properly as I mentioned. Still, with the adjustments I’ve made to it, I’ve figured out how to watch the shows on there with little stress now. But I can’t wait to get the LG C1.

    I investigated this a year ago when trying to decide which box to buy. The best advice from online enthusiasts etc was there was no difference in picture quality between the Roku Ultra, Apple TV and LG's WebOS app, when displaying 24p movies. Using WebOS has the advantage of internal data transfers and avoids the blank screen problems associated with transitions from 60Hz to 24p content, that plagued early boxes. Also, this freed up an HDMI input to allow the use of ARC in my system. However, WebOS is missing a few key content providers (PBS, ESPN etc) but I have that covered on other TVs. Content provider support of 24p and 4K is a big mess that I gave up on.
    Have you compared WebOS vs Apple TV picture quality on your LG OLED TV?

    • @dylan-nguyen
      @dylan-nguyen Рік тому

      it basically all boils down to the processor, the AppleTV 4K has a beast of a processor, the same ones going in the iPhone 14 which are still 50% faster than the best top of the line Samsung smartphones
      it's basically ensuring you will have no dropped frames and always get the highest bitrate video whereas the internal LG WebOS apps might lower the quality to keep up, especially if you have an older generation TV
      also while I have not tested every single app on the LG, individual app devs need to implement Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, etc on a per-app basis. So even though the TV supports it, if the app developer was too lazy to make a good WebOS app, the TV might not have Atmos, etc.
      the same app on the AppleTV almost certainly has all the top of the line features

    • @trevorbartram5473
      @trevorbartram5473 Рік тому

      Like I said, I took the advice of several online video enthusiasts who compared the picture quality of: Apple TV, Roku Ultra & WebOS app from the same source and could discern no difference. In my case I have all TV picture processing turned off (incl ABL, recently) so my processor does not have a lot to do. Where is the evidence of reduced quality or dropped frames?

It's pathetic but true! The Hulu app on Nvidia Shield doesn't even support 4K! I know some are due to hardware limitation some due to the developer's laziness. The fact is, there is no 'perfect' device that does 'everything'.
