A “smart” TV is the dumbest thing one can buy. It’s obsolete long before the actual panel stops work. Just ignore the “smart” part of your new TV and use an external box.

I mean you can use the Smart part until it becomes obsolete which can take a good 5 years.

The Roku built in to my 3 year old TV works just fine. Smart apps built in to a Blu-ray player are truly awful though.

You are the only UA-cam creator that I've seen that actually mentions the private listening feature on Roku. That's a huge feature that never gets mentioned.

That's because the other platforms have bluetooth. So you can simply pair your earbuds/headphones with the tv instead of going through the Roku app or tv remote which in my opinion are just an inconvenience.

Based on this video, I bought a Roku Express 4K+ to add streaming functionality to my 10yr old 'dumb' 1080p TV.
I got the "Express 4K+" for $25. I went with the "Express 4K+" over the more basic "Express" due to the remote with TV controls, and I'm very happy. Since my old TV is in the same room as my router and I'll be streaming 1080p, I don't see any issue with the older wifi support. Plus my router doesn't do Wifi AX, just AC. I like how the "Express 4k+" can be wired into my LAN, but it does stink that you need to buy a 3rd party solution.

Excellent summary overall. One thing I will say is that I have also been a Shield user since 2015, but one thing to note that I discovered recently is that HDR on UA-cam doesn't work, and never will. This is because the Shield does not have hardware support for VP9.2 codec that UA-cam uses for HDR since the chip is so old. This is something that most of the competitors offer, including the much cheaper Chromecast and even the latest Apple TV (which previously didn't even support UA-cam 4K due to the lack of VP9 support, but the latest model supports all the way up to VP9.2). Maybe not much of an issue since there's not much UA-cam HDR content out there, but it's worth noting. I've also noticed recently that the "match frame rate" option on the Shield doesn't work very well for a lot of apps; some of them will crash when you try to enable it, and others just won't do anything. This means the Shield gets stuck outputting 24fps content at 60fps, so you get nasty judder. It's even worse if you watch 25fps or 50fps PAL content. The Apple TV not only does this properly, it does it automatically on all content if you have the option turned on in the settings. It's really nice, because it allows my LG CX to handle all the frame rate conversion itself, which it does a much better job of than any of the players do on board. It's for these reasons that, begrudgingly, I've switched to using the Apple TV 4K for pretty much everything except local content playback. The Shield is still better at watching content over my local network via XBMC/Plex, but the Apple TV is better for any kind of app streaming.
Also worth noting that Xbox Blu-Ray playback is still wonky, especially with audio. To output Dolby Atmos to your receiver you have to install the Dolby app and enable settings in there. And if you have the Xbox connected to something that doesn't accept DTS (like most new LG TVs) it will refuse to play a disc that uses a DTS soundtrack. You have to go into the options and set it to process the audio onboard, but then you have to disable it if you want to pass Dolby audio again later. It's just not a very good Blu-ray player overall.

This is a good analysis. I debated covering this in the video (which is mostly aimed at general consumers) but opted to save the more technical analysis for a future video. I might do something separately on 24p / fillmmaker mode and which devices support it. I have found the Apple TV is the best at 24p content outside of built in TV apps.

@@LonSeidman , for your technical video, please also talk about how Roku Media Player (RMP) does NOT support decoding DTS. It can pass DTS audio to be decoded elsewhere (A/V receiver as such). Many of us have asked for DTS decoding support (either add a pay option (RMP Pro?) or allow a third party media player. Also, talk about what devices play what type of USB media (MP4, MKV - H264/H265).

@Lon.TV In 2021, Google began rolling out a large update to the Android TV platform. This update included many changes, a new interface, and a new name - *Google TV.* Google TV is designed to be more personalized than Android TV, with Google’s A.I. capabilities working behind the scenes to find recommended content. And, newer devices are adopting Google TV from the outset, so if you buy a new Sony TV and even some new TCL TVs today, it will come loaded with Google TV, not Android TV. Google’s own Chromecast has also been updated to the new version, which is officially called the Chromecast with Google TV. Google has plans to replace Android TV with Google TV by 2022! In the review, why not Google tv? Also the Google tv hardware is hyperlinked. It's not Android tv though.

    Thanks.
I tried to point out several times to people who were dumping their Roku devices that I thought they were changing too soon.
All of these services will have spats at one time or another.
It happens when renewed contract negotiations start, and almost always goes down to the wire.
I really like my Roku Ultra because of it's clean format and simple UI.
When the time comes to upgrade, I'll be getting another Roku Ultra.

    This is a good overview.
However, it leaves one major technical aspect out of the discussion: Automatic Frame Rate Switching (AFS), especially 24p and 50 Hz playback.
I own the latest Apple TV 4K, an NVIDIA SHIELD TV (2017) and tested the Fire TV 4K stick and the Google TV stick. Roku is not avalable (yet) in my country.
The Fire TV only supports AFS on their Prime Video App.
The SHIELD has a beta version of AFS implemented which only works on Netflix, but no other streaming App.
The Google TV does not support 24p at all, so there will always be stuttering when watching 24p content.
The only device supporting AFS reliably for most Apps is the Apple TV 4K: It works with iTunes movies/shows, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and most other Apps. The only App I use where AFS is not supported on the Apple TV 4K is UA-cam, but that's Google's fault.
So the Apple TV 4K is the only valid option to me personally, despite its admittedly very high price.

    • @LonSeidman
      @LonSeidman  2 роки тому +2

I purposely didn't get into the technical weeds in this one but this is a feature I will likely talk about in a more technically oriented episode. The inclusion of AFS is noticeably better on the Apple TV for sure.

Overall I think a pretty fair assessment. But I think the fact that Roku/FireTV have had frequent issues offering apps (HBO Max/UA-cam TV) similar to the carrage fee fights cable companies have with channel providers deserved more weight. I would also say the AppleTV deserved a fairer shake. Absolutely, it's expensive. But it's a much more polished experience. Those 'ads' or video previews can be turned off for a better "top shelf" (their term for the feature of apps on the top row) experience. But just the scrolling experience has a better feel in most apps that take advantage of native APIs. And the Apple TV is the only box I've use (tried them all except Roku), where a simple voice command will turn off subtitles in every app. Or the "what did he say" to rewind and turn on subtitles.

Great comparison Lon. Big fan of the channel. However, this doesn't take into account users who don't reside in the U.S. When it comes to streaming or more generally content, geography matters a lot. As someone living outside of the U.S, I know firsthand how uneven the online streaming space is. So, Roku is great but only if you live in the U.S. While a Roku device will work outside of the U.S, most of the services won't include Roku's own streaming channel. So Roku wouldn't be my least recommended player for users outside of the U.S. Even worse, Roku has no support for VPN apps, so even those who have traveled abroad with their devices will be locked out like the rest of us.
The best player for international users is without a doubt any of the Android TV players. Google/Android is the most universally facing Tech company on earth. Chromecast by Google TV comes highly recommended, but even then some services won't work in most regions including Live TV features and Movies recommendations. Android TV supports DStv's streaming app as well as Showmax both of which are absent on the other platforms. These services are owned by the biggest satellite pay tv provider on the African continent.
Amazon fire tv would be my second recommendation, but be aware that IMDB TV(now Freeve) owned by Amazon has limited support outside of the U.S. But Prime is mostly globally available. Haven't used Apple TV. I know they don't support VPN apps, so no easy way around geo restrictions. But Apple TV+ is supported in most regions in the world. That's all.

Great video. Really like the honest roundup. It would have been great to touch some on the ethernet options as for some that may be an important aspect if they stream from Plex or similar. Also, are there any missing "normal/expected" apps on any of the platforms. I owned an earlier version of Apple TV device and it was missing too many standard apps at the time. So app support is key on these devices, so would have been fantastic to hear who is currently best in this category. I liked how you brought up the "fights" that can occur and some apps can get removed or no longer receive updates.

      That's an awesome question!
Roku has a hotel/dorm/hospital mode. It's very easy to sign-in but does require a phone or laptop to bypass any wifi captive portal.
I don't know, if it's still available, but I bought a very simple Roku with a composite option a few years ago. It was a mistake at the time, but it actually came in handy whilst traveling. Internet quality can usually be too mediocre for 4K. Some hotel television connections are cumbersome to reach or are inaccessible. No manufacturers seem to have figured out how to put an HDMI port on the front of flat panels just yet, but the composite connection can almost always be connected in more extreme cases. ua-cam.com/video/iPDcUGwfxak/v-deo.html Fortunately, hotels are getting better with streaming as the new norm. The last one I visited in Las Vegas last month had Tubi, UA-cam and Netflix integrated right into their system. Signing into Netflix was simply getting a one time use code directly from my personal device. This will probably become widespread over the next decade. Marriott worked with one of the streaming companies to test it out at some of their properties, and I did try it at a Fairfield Inn to mixed results back in the latter pre-pandemic days. Marriott is simply not my first brand of choice, so I rarely utilise the chain.

Apple TV does not have any advertising in the interface at all. What you referred to as ads are just the app featured content which is entirely app controlled -- not part of the tvOS interface. Most apps use it to display your own watch list content, or a logo for the app, not ads. But if an app is using it for ads, you can easily turn it off.

I’m sure you did your best to cover all the systems that are available. That said the Apple TV 4K has the best feature and support services. That said the price is much higher. That old saying you get what you payed for is very true. That Apple TV along with its Home automation is a very powerful system.
I have all the systems you talked about except for the roku having a big family that I have helped out. They make great Christmas gifts. To be far, not everyone can afford the best so it’s good to see a wide range of devices and prices
Your review is one of the best I’ve seen so far.

Great video but... You ignore the speed differences among the devices. The lower end devices are much slower than the ~$50 list price devices. I never recommend the bottom devices of Roku or Fire TV because the user is paying too much in wasted time waiting for apps and content to load.
Also, you can sideload Android apps onto Fire TV devices.

Bought a 3RD party remote which is a clone of the original Amazon Fire TV stick remote. It is okay, but very slow and you have to wait about 15 seconds to wake it up from sleep. The reason why I bought that remote is that the dog stole the original remote then destroyed it.

Android TV is the best for nerds like myself and Roku is the best for people who want simple with the most options. Fire TV is pretty cheap and easy to use as well and Apple TV is only useful if you are already in the Apple ecosystem and don't mind overpaying.

Just to be transparent, the reason Netflix doesn’t show up on Apple TV search is 100% because Netflix app doesn’t implement Apple’s search API. Apple doesn’t block Netflix from doing so. Furthermore, Apple doesn’t force Netflix to do so in order to be on their box.

The Roku Ultra appears to have a USB 2.0 port in the front. How well does it play movies and music off external HDDs or SSDs? What formats are supported and their bit rates? While I can see definite benefits of voice commands for control of a media player and your home A/V gear the privacy invasion all of these entertainment computers utilize is just too high a price for me personally. My handicapped brother could have used these without knowing anything more than say a specific command word to get the attention of the spy bot and then tell it what you want it to do.
"spybot play Wizard of OZ". So then he could watch that a thousand more times off external media just like he used to with a VCR but without talking to the VCR.

That is great to hear. I owned a Gen 2 v3, and it was on the sluggish side. I hear this new one is really snappy , like you said. Has their app support come up to par with the others? Along with the sluggishness of the older generations I found it missing many of the apps I used. However, I assume Apple has fixed most of this by now? I use Plex, Tubi, Peacock, Hulu, UA-cam TV, Apple TV streaming, Amazon Video, Pureflix, Vudu (for rentals). I also cast from iPhones/iPads along with Android phones (we are a house divided :) )
