DO THE MAINTENANCE is such a great philosophy. It applies to a lot more than gun upkeep.

Patina is a marketing term. I see it all the time in the used car arena.

To put it another way. A lack of patina is always due to good maintenance.

Mark, nothing to do with this video but wanted to thanks for the vids. You inspired me to tear down my 1939 model 11, removed 1/8” shellac, sand and stain the wood, remove 50 years of WD40 from the action, replace the friction rings and re-spring the gun. She’s a dream to shoot now.

Patina; a word associated with, high-end antique furniture, or fine guns. Rust; a word associated with, a sever personal aversion to oil, maintenance and or giving a rat's rump.

Fully agree with you! Been boiling and rust bluing for quite a while. Something crossed my mind..wondering if you ever did it. Firearm with hot salt blue...rusted up finish (not as bad as your Manton!). Would boiling out be able to convert the rust in pitted areas so that rust bleed out (after subsequent Hot Salt bluing) could be eliminated? The chemistry tells me yes, butI've never tried it! Any thoughts? John

Mark it seems that if you can get to a firearm in time it might just turn out better then it originally was. I want to boil my 1914 vintage Colt 1911 however I don’t think it will come out looking as good as this piece in the video. It had a lot of spots that were worn down to the white. Also what’s your recommendation to get rid of electric pen marks. My Colt has the old timers last 4 digits electric pen on the frame just under the serial numbers.

I would immerse these pieces in Evaporust for a few days, hit them with CLP and a bronze brush, and then re-blue them using Birchwood Casey Perma Blue and Barricade. I would love to maintain the original finish, but have never been able to get results like what is shown in these "after" pictures from CLP and elbow grease. How do you restore that original finish so well?

There are a multitude of videos on this channel going into the conservation process in depth, but it boils down to boiling the metal to convert the rust, carding what rust comes off with a brush or soft wire wheel (if it abrades your skin, its too abrasive for the job), and repeating as needed until you're down to what survives, if any, of the original finish.

. Once you have it down to the original finish, go right over top with a good rust blue (not Bitchwood Casey cold blue) to bring any damaged areas back to the original shine.
      Videos are on this channel.

@@Sman7290 Thank you. I have enjoyed watching this channel's videos, but I don't know what you mean by "go right over the top with a good rust blue." I would love to retain the original rust blue finish, but have never been able to do so. I will review this channel's videos again. Thank you for your recommendation.

By doing a rust conversion. You're losing the finish any time you remove the rust, clean convert, and card. It's amazing how easy it is and how well it work on guns that aren't really trashed.
