- One year ago today, the Indian government surprisingly revoked the special autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, it’s only Muslim majority state. The revocation of Article 370 shocked residents of the region. The government also split the state into two federally controlled territories, calling them Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This effectively took political representation away from the people of Kashmir and into the hands of Delhi. The move further strained diplomatic relations with India’s neighbor Pakistan, which just issued a new official map, which includes all of Kashmir, including the parts controlled by India. Both countries claim this whole region in its entirety, but govern it only partially. Meanwhile the residents of Indian controlled Kashmir have been attempting to live their lives through near continuous disruption, curfews and internet outages over the past year.

Two factual mistakes:
1. Maharaja acceded to India only after pakistan invaded independent kashmir then.
2. India unilaterally declared ceasefire in 1949 and went to UN.
3. Kashmiri pandit about 500000 were forced out of the Kashmir valley in violence during 90s.
500,000 Pandits? why not make it 1,000,000 good round number.
The 2nd one is actually clever. Because at that time Indian Army was able to fight the Kabailis (Tribals sent by Pakistan) but the problem was that due to your first point they had already captured some strategic peaks and Pakistani Army was coming to there rescue time to time.
It was like 2 front war played by Pakistan. I am not doubting our army's capabilities but we have to admit Maharaja really did a mistake by signing accession document very late. At that time Army was not equipped with latest weapons either. It was the sacrifices of Major Usman and others in 1947 war that led the present Kashmir and Ladakh to us.
And also by that time 90% of Kashmir was already in our hands. So by declaring ceasefire we actually fooled Pakistan and got 90% of Kashmir.

The army at that time was still under the control of the British. Gilgit and Baltistan was liberated by their own militia, who then joined Pakistan. As for Pakistan Administered Kashmir, that is a combination of pashtun and Kashmiri militia

This feels strangely biased. The UN did not intervene itself, Nehru had to leave a country with unstoppable blood-letting to go to the UN and seek intervention, which instead proposed a resolution so difficult to implement that it's not been possible till date.

I kept waiting for them to report on how Article 370 was always contemplated to be a temporary arrangement under the India constitution and that the end goal was the complete integration of J&K with the Union of India. But they never mentioned it.

India is a free and sovereign country to take its own decisions. India is not a federal country, but a quasi federal one with centralizing tendencies as provided by the Indian Constitution. So it's upto Indian Government to rebuild or reshape it's states.

Govt. Perfectly highlighted the loophole of Article 370. Kashmir issue was a perfect amalgam of all previous government blunders, Pakistan’s proxy policies and worst of all “religious” fanatism. This issue is under stalmate, plesibite can never happen because of UN’s primary condition, Kashmir is legally asceded to India by the then king, Pakistan gave a piece of PoK as gift to China, China has taken up CPEC corridor through Karakoram and Pakistan is defaultor of Chinese loans.
The only way forward in this issue is people should earn government’s trust and government must earn people’s trust both hand in hand, else every step will distant the approach towards achieving a solution to one of the most complex geopolitical problem on earth.

Why no ladakhi people was interviewed, this article is just temporary, I agree this is shock for everyone.
The Resolution recommended a three-step process for the resolution of the dispute.
In the first step, Pakistan was asked to withdraw all its nationals that entered Kashmir for the sake of fighting.
In the second step, India was asked to progressively reduce its forces to the minimum level required for law and order.
In the third step, India was asked to appoint a plebiscite administrator nominated by the United Nations who would conduct a free and impartial plebiscite.

Do you think both India and Pakistan wont meddle in an "Azad" Kashmir after? it will be worse for Kashmir. Basically, by revoking Section 370 J&K has been made officially another state in India and gets all the privileges of that. I am not saying everything is perfect now, but it is better than the alternative.
