Bangalore-based historian Dr. Vikram Sampath is the author of 8 acclaimed books of history including biographies of Gauhar Jaan & Veer Savarkar & Bravehearts of Bharat on unsung heroes of India. He was elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Historical Society of the UK, a winner of the Sahitya Akademi's first Yuva Puraskar in English literature & the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Research in New York. He has a Ph.D. in history & music from the University of Queensland, is a trained Carnatic vocalist & has established India's 1st digital sound archive for vintage gramophone recordings called the Archive of Indian Music.
This video is a breakdown of the Indian Freedom Struggle. The Indian independence movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending British rule in India. It lasted from 1857 to 1947. Few leaders followed a more violent approach, than the others. This became especially popular after the Rowlatt Act, which permitted indefinite detention. The Act sparked protests across India, especially in the Punjab province, where they were violently suppressed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Indian independence movement was in constant ideological evolution.

Ranveer your podcasts are great but most of the people you invite are writing against Gandhi, Nehru or written on these things which behind the scenes, most of them may be true. But Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who fought hole life for the country with his thoughts against Gandhi's policy of non-violence, was an ideological opponent of Gandhi, but it is completely wrong to show that Netaji's thoughts were compatible with Savarkar's thoughts and that is what is going on in the country at present. Gandhi was wrong in his every decision if Hon. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also wrong? Many people in the country followed their thoughts, they took those thoughts in proper measure and the society changed.
Of course, I don't want to believe that Gandhi was entirely good
So we request you to invite historians who write history from the other side.
This is my personal opinion
I am a Kokanastha maharashtrian brahmin. Following Gandhi's death, my great grandfather had to run away from Kolhapur after a mob burnt his house and shop. His crime? Belonging to the same subcaste as Godse.
He came to Mumbai with his wife and 5 daughters, had to live in detestable conditions and work till he died because they had lost everything.
Thank you Sampath ji for shedding light on this tragedy.
I also remember my dadi telling us all the stories about it, hence she disliked congress a lot and we were kids to understand the depth of it all … now as a grown up, it feels so terrible
I feel all those who have heard the true story of brahmin masacre post Gandhi ji's assassination should write papers/reports or documents so that remains in the memory and history of oppressed Indians. Otherwise, the colonized mindset is doing so much of so called activism to wash out the truth.
Not only you , my great grandfather also had to run away from satara leaving his 4 story wada and 400 acres land and come into sangli , and living a normal life , i am also bramhin , but i am sanatani not bramhin. That's the ideology veer savarkar gave us to be united

I am a maharashtrian brahmin. The 1948 carnage that Mr. Sampath talked about is true. My Great grandfather and his family was thrown out of their home in Kolhapur and was burnt to ashes in front of them. My grandfather was mere 10 year old at the time. He wrote his very first poem while watching all this happen and later he went on and become the famous marathi film lyricist Shri. Jagdish Khebudkar. I have heard the incident from him several times and it brings goosebumps and tears just while writing this comment.

Actually. When I visited I was taken aback and saddened. As a Maharashtrian we are proud of Veer Savarkarji and have highest regard for him, however several revolutionary from Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab who gave their highest sacrifice life for the nation are not even remembered,leave aside any respect. Such a sad thing.

I am a grand daughter of a freedom fighter , my grand father served his imprisonment in Kolhapur jail during the freedom struggle, he was from Fergusson College ,Pune (Law). He is awarded by the state for his contribution to freedom struggle , same way did his own petitions ,etc . Was excellent in english language as well as French.With all the intellectual discussion in the family that I have seen since childhood ,I am glad to see that India has decided to make merit. Also I belong to the linage of Sri Baji prabhu Deshpande. It feels great to see our thoughts being directed to understand the facts.
May God be with you and your family! We all are here because of the people in the past including your grandfather that put there maximum effort because they knew they can't let the future generations suffer.

The history is written by the conquerors, in this case the party which came in power were very much in ideaological cohoots with the Colonials because it was the colonials who had founded the very party who they transferred the power to.

My grandmother's maternal family faced this. Her family were quite well to do at that time and after Mr. Nathuram Godse's assasination, those criminals made sure the family loose everything and almost come on the roads. Thank you Dr. Vikram Sampath for highlighting this issue and Ranveer for giving us the platform to gain the right knowledge of our great country's fragmented history. As a proud Indian, I feel ashamed to have learnt such a fragmented manipulated history in our textbooks ..History is very interesting when we get to know the true picture of the things that actually happened in the past and i guess a lot of Indian youth are deprived of this due to some faulty educationists . I went to Andaman on my honeymoon. God bless my wife for coming with me to a historical site like kaala pani. There are actual lifesize dioramas of prisoners being tortured while grinding out groundnut oil. Also got a chance to stand in Savarkar's cell. Then when you go up to the terrace and look out you realize that it was such a remote spot in the middle of the ocean, that even if you escape, you're dead so there's no hope whatsoever. (In contrast with Alcatraz in the us). Hats off to savarkar for keeping his sanity. Truth be told, savarkar should have been like our Nelson mandela.

I grew up in RSS Bangalore in the 90s. I was told about Veer Savarkar ji in Shaka and Bhaitak. When I visited Kalapani and sat in Savarkar ji's cell, the emotion I felt as an Indian cannot be explained in words. I feel blessed just to say his name.
I m from Maharashtra and I m really happy that sir mentioned so many revolutionary names from Maharashtra like Savarkar, Chafekar bandhu, Anant Kanhere, Shirishkumar, etc. We studied about them in our history books. I have so much knowledge and info about them as I stjdy for state govt exams. I give tribute to all of them while studying. Some people call so many nasty things about them and I get so upset abput that bcoz they even don't know 1% of the history.

I had tears in my eyes while I was reading 'Savarkar by Vikram Sampath' and goosebumps while listening to this podcast.
True. My eyes wells up listening to him talk about Kalapani. I broke down several times and couldn't sleep the day I read about these tortures in his book.
But on godse it seems he didn't do justice on podcast , he hardly told about Gandhi failure and hypocrisy in the name of hindu muslim unity, perhaps he want to make it little bit sugary for listeners to absorb

As a local brahmin from Pune, we have always known and worshipped Savarkar. Moreover we are the ones who suffered a lot after Gandhi was killed by Nathuram. Maharashtra has contributed a lot to the freedom struggle of India. Glad to see someone is talking about all of it.

finally we are talking about the 1946 naval mutiny….. my grandfather was part of it he was in his early 20s … I remember him telling us that they revolted and replaced the British flag with the Indian flag in the deck … they were all captured… my grandfather was also caught … …. When he was held …. He was let off with a slap saying you are too young and dont even have a moustache…. It took more than 50 years for the govt to get him recognised as a freedom fighter …
Please share your grandfather's name. It needs to be remembered like many others' who actually fought for our country.

We made that pilgrimage last year and even my sons in their 20s were overcome with emotion visiting the cellular Jail. Every school / college must organise trips there and encourage students to appreciate the sacrifices of Sri Savarkar & hundreds of revolutionaries who gave us our freedom. The present govt is doing a stupendous job is restoring the monument & archiving documents there. I too have a story of my father's escape from
the wrath of murderous mobs during the anti Brahmin attack post the hanging of Godse. So glad Mr Sampath brought it up.

This was your most moving episode, I was crying when Vikram Sampath talked about Kala Pani and the horrible conditions the jailors had to live in.
My grandpa was part of the Quit India Movement. He was jailed by the British in 1941. My grandpa wasn't allowed to fight back against the jailors because they were asked by Gandhi to be non violent. This is the best history episode on your show, thank you so much for having him on the show. I'm so glad he defended and explained Hindutva, please have him back on the show to talk about more untold history.
I read thr first volume of Vikram Sampath's book, and I can tell you I needed a few weeks to recover from a sickened and saddened heart. Any mention of Savarkar now brings me to tears.

@@kst7980 Ok let me give you the full story. This happened about 80 years ago. It happened outside of the high court in Indore, India. There were a couple hundred freedom fighters to start off but the police dispersed the crowds by beating them, the crowds weren't allowed to fight back because they were in a non violent movement. Then the police asked them to just say sorry and they would let them go without being punished. A good number of people said sorry but my grandpa and less then 10 other guys didn't say sorry so they were beat up and sent to jail. They were all jailed for one year, they were allowed to have 1 visitor every 6 months. We all should know by now that a jail in British India was no picnic so you can imagine what kind of struggles the prisoners had to endure. After India's independence/ partition, all of the the freedom fighters were awarded for life by the Indian government. FYI, since you probably don't know every freedom fighter gets a state and national monthly pension from the government and 2 free 1st class Railway tickets for life. Those are not the best benefits about being a freedom fighter, anytime he went anywhere and if people found out he's a freedom fighter, he got the same honor, salute and respect as an army general. My grandpa raised us with Gandhian philosophies that's why I'm not going to abuse or say anything negative even though you were very disrespectful in your post.

8 mins into the podcast and I got to admit I never knew about the 1946 Mutiny, when I was taught history in my 8th standard in 2008, the first war of independence was still called SEPOY MUTINY and I heard the word Ahoms for the first time today.

Marathi music director Sudhir Phadke who was a staunch supporter of Savarkar produced a movie on Veer Savarkar. For that he had to spend his earnings of lifetime. I was fortunate enough to work as an errand boy during the shooting of this movie. All for the love towards Veer Savarkar. I grew up in his shadows.

My late grandpa was in railways during independence era. He used to say that when ever Gandhi used to come to Bombay only 6 or 7 used to receive him at the station. When Nehru used to visit it would be around 25. But when Bose used to visit plenty of them used to come. I agree with Vikram in the video (56.10) ...on 30th Jan all shops were closed as everyone knew that the old man will be sent to his maker. Strangely an English lady who was my grandpa's neighbour greeted my grandpa as usual and told him today your G ....will be killed. If common people knew this ....then no doubt even Pandus knew, yet all wanted him to go.
How did everyone know it was the 30th only? Any significance of that date?

Thank you for mentioning my ancestors 'Ahoms' in your podcast. Yes they were fierce and had some drawbacks and mutiny among themselves but non of the history books had mention that Mughals tried several times to capture North East and Ahoms defeated them each time. Infact the history books have all the stories of the failures of the kings who were defeated by the Mughals.

as an assamese history nerd, i would like to slightly correct your stance of mughals never defeating the ahoms. they actually did manage to capture parts pf assam by the lead of mir jumhla ii and that was when the "Treaty of Ghilajharighat" was signed where the mughals agreed to give back the territory under conditions. i'm sure you've heard of ramani gabharu who was taken as a part of the treaty, later married to aurangzeb's dear son azam shah.
Being born in Maharashtrian family and schooling in Marathi medium school, I was very fortunate to read Swatantryaveer Savarkar’s poems and books ( kalepani, Mazi Janmthep, Moplyache band). We used to sing his poems in school. He gave so many alternative Marathi words to English words (Mahanagarpalika - Municipality etc)under the agenda of making Marathi more cleaned and original language rather than adulterated. His ‘science based essays’ literally give insights how visionary and practical Hindu he was. He was against all rituals and was urging people to be science and conscience based. It gives pain when people call him communal and what not. Wanna be PM (you know who) made comment on him where he has 0 knowledge about him. What gives more pain is, educated people without reading about him make comments on him and follow their political leaders who having their own agenda to carry on. He was had identified Kashmir and china issues way back when Nehru took wrong decisions regarding concerned issues. He tried to warn him but as Mr. Vikram mentions they always ignored revolutionary leaders and Swatantyaveer was like top enemy for them!!!

In the 80's when I first saw the award winning film "Gandhi", I felt the some part of the film was missing. Independence was easy. Now days I am realising what's the missing part was or is in the film. It's never too late to unlearn.
The first time I heard of veer savarkar was on my visit to the cellular jail when I was 13 yrs old. The light and sound show that happens in the evening will give you an idea of the tortures, trials and tribulations by veer savarkar and many other freedom fighters whose names I sadly forgot. Then year later came across Vikram Sampth's Savarkar to come out of the mirage of false history. Thank you Ranveer for this amazing podcast!!

5 years back I have been to Cellular Jail, Port Blair and watched Light and Sound show on Veer Savarkar. But could not go to first floor to see cell where Veer was imprisoner because tears were running down to know his sufferings and torture he has faced. Today we are independent due to sacrifices made by martyrs like Veer.

We can totally relate to him . My grandfather recalled that when he was merely in his teens , his grandmother was passed away . And it was the same time Gandhi was assassinated . The funeral of his grandmother was on its way when this mob came near there area to burn houses and loot them . All the neighbouring houses were burnt and all sorts of non-violent stuff happened . But as they saw the dead body and all the rituals being performed infront of house , the mob turned back and spared our house ........this was our story of the so called peaceful supporters of gandhi who had came to vandalize our community .
