Exactly. I was in high school during this time and literally lived through his era. I'd get my entire family to go to the Hooters in town so we could reserve a table for $20 and watch every single live PPV Anderson was on, on the big screens in there. We weren't a rich family and I remember even pawning off some of my videogames and shit one time just so we could go watch him live. Living through his era was unlike any other. I don't get that feeling from modern day guys. Silva had the mystique and the aura like none other and he always delivered.

How quickly people forget. I lived through Anderson's era. I watched every fight live on PPV at the Hooters across town. I ran into Cody McKenzie and Julianna Pena watching the fights too, before their names ever really got out there. It was something special. I remember people were absolutely convinced Maia was going to drag Silva to the floor and sub him in spectacular fashion, and by the end of it all we got was "Why didn't Anderson just put him out of his misery?" How quickly people forget. Rich Franklin was 22-1 going into his fight against Anderson. He looked unbeatable, was knocking everybody out. Stopped Ken Shamrock, Evan Tanner, Nate The Rock Quarry, David The Crow Loiseau. Rich was putting all the top guys out from his own era. Then Silva came in and literally made Rich look like an amateur that somehow found his way into a professional fight. That fight against Rich literally signaled the beginning of the Silva era. The new era of combat sports. Anderson did not lose his title until he was 37 years old, after a career lasting from 1997. There are not very many champions nearing 40 years old in the lower weight division. Silva was a seasoned veteran that was still consistently putting out young and hungry competitors. His title reign lasted 7 years. Long enough to get a Master's degree, and he only looked like he was in trouble one time, against Chael Sonnen. There wasn't a single title contender during those 7 long years that even looked like they belonged in the cage with The Spider. How quickly the people forget...

It's not the length of the reign, it's the depth of the division. You win the lightweight title once and defend it, it speaks volumes more than any other division.

Exactly. I was in high school during this time and literally lived through his era. I'd get my entire family to go to the Hooters in town so we could reserve a table for $20 and watch every single live PPV Anderson was on, on the big screens in there. We weren't a rich family and I remember even pawning off some of my videogames and shit one time just so we could go watch him live. Living through his era was unlike any other. I don't get that feeling from modern day guys. Silva had the mystique and the aura like none other and he always delivered.

How quickly people forget. I lived through Anderson's era. I watched every fight live on PPV at the Hooters across town. I ran into Cody McKenzie and Julianna Pena watching the fights too, before their names ever really got out there. It was something special. You could feel it in the air, and Anderson's process was a beauty to behold. Hearing all of the pre-fight talk on the internet and from so called experts and then seeing the results live...I remember every single Anderson fight, people would have some reason why Anderson would lose. For Vitor they said his hands were just too fast, Anderson wouldn't be able to dodge or stay away. Turns out Vitor hardly got any offense off. I remember people were absolutely convinced Maia was going to drag Silva to the floor and sub him in spectacular fashion, and by the end of it all we got was "Why didn't Anderson just put him out of his misery?" How quickly people forget.
Rich Franklin was 22-1 going into his fight against Anderson. He looked unbeatable, was knocking everybody out. Stopped Ken Shamrock, Evan Tanner, Nate The Rock Quarry, David The Crow Loiseau. Rich was putting all the top guys out from his own era. Then Silva came in and literally made Rich look like an amateur that somehow found his way into a professional fight. That fight against Rich literally signaled the beginning of the Silva era. The new era of combat sports. Anderson did not lose his title until he was 37 years old, after a career lasting from 1997. There are not very many champions nearing 40 years old in the lower weight division. Silva was a seasoned veteran that was still consistently putting out young and hungry competitors. His title reign lasted 7 years. Long enough to get a Master's degree, and he only looked like he was in trouble one time, against Chael Sonnen. There wasn't a single title contender during those 7 long years that even looked like they belonged in the cage with The Spider.
