Orwell's looks like he's doing great! We just bought a pair of identical 1984 IH 9670 110 big bunks with low miles (498 and 515k) from a heavy haul outfit in California. 3406 motors, 15 spds with 15k tags on 227" WB all on air, twin 100G tanks and sliding 5th wheels. They been off the road since '05 and started right up, put them on the trailer and hauled them back East after giving the owner 22k for both of them. I saw a ton of clean iron when I was there and CHEAP! California's a gold mine for old trucks, nobody wants them for some reason, lol. My nephew calls them Alex and Eddie, the Van Halen boys.
@@steverzepecki500 For commerce yes, for private ownership no. I was at the ATHS show in Perris Last year and old trucks are still being driven all over California. The So-Cal chapter of the ATHS website has a forum on legalities for owning and operating old diesel trucks.
It's not that nobody wants them, it's that California has strict laws over aging trucks, hell, a 4 year old truck may not pass inspection for the smog rules out there.

At 6-7 bucks a gallon, not many people are using them for pleasure cruisers like they once were. We here on the East coast are reaping the benefits in spades. I have two Landoll's going out West almost every three weeks now with prices the way they are. Back here the price is near triple for rust free older iron.
I'll tell you what happened that caused the road block. A couple got into an argument on 31 about a mile south of where you re-entered 31. The woman exited the vehicle, and her drunk husband in a fit of rage ran her over with the car killing her. I live in Free Soil. Hope you enjoyed touring my quaint little town.

Lots of times the cursory look at simple things like lights, tires and overall appearance says a LOT about the condition of the truck.... generally of the driver is taking care of the small things, they'll be taking care of the bigger things too. For me, just having things noted on my PTI has had me skate on more in depth inspections...
I was in a rest area and the DOT had pulled in while I was on my sleep period. They knocked on my door and demanded my paperwork. I ignored them as when you are sleeping, you are NOT on duty. After about 5 mins, I opened the sleeper door and told them to knock the shit off as i had 7 hours left of my sleep period and they just made me reset it. I called my company to let them know and they sent a qualcomm message to all drivers about what was goin on and to let them know of any other states doing the same thing. I have also been pulled in and told to NOT update my logbook at scales, I ignore them as well as the officers CANNOT override the rules for their own gain. I also ran a loose leaf logbook, so I can take out the days not required so the officers cannot find any possible violations.
My sister and brother in law own a shop in prairie du chien WI and the belong to a side by side club i was up there for two months and they go every were and really enjoy it.
20 of us get together every year and theres an older couple that we pay to camp in their yard. They live across from 100's of miles of riding trails. I bring my cr 500 2 stroke and they don't make those anymore and everyone else takes their 4 wheelers and razers and we get our or stickers and we ride for a week. Its a blast to be able to do that.
In alabama you can put a license plate on side by sides and run them everywhere. Only restrictions are on 4wheelers. Can’t run them on the road. But side by sides you can if you lic them. Plus there is a ton of trails and hunting roads you can run

I was up in upstate newyork 2 wks ago and the rest areas were full of dot and state troopers they were looking at trucks i counted 10 of them in 1 small rest area then i stopped un another rest area to use the bathroom and it was full too
In Milwaukee with a 13' wide load I ran into the same closed road on side streets. I told them I have to stay on route or my permit isn't valid. They pulled the squads out of the way and let my 130,000lb oversize load roll on past.
Wish you could rest in a rest area, but most don't allow it. Year's ago, in Texas, I stopped at a rest area, for bathroom use, came out to find d o t standing by my company truck. Luckily,the computer logs were still too new in the industry,and they didn't have the knowledge,yet.
If pulling in to a rest area and dot is there .. legally park go to off duty. They can't force you to change duty status. I did this in Ohio. Pissed the officers off to no end. "Talk to me when my break is over" And, your under no legal obligation to assist in their investigation. Logbook, bills, DL then feet on dash.

Haha, try running into a closed road with an 80' long oversize load in north Chicago. I didn't even stop and talk to the cops, just turned right and then two left turns to get back on my permit route. No GPS in those days.
I know a lot of the older divers were taught strapping like you did but it is dangerous. If some idiot bumps your trailer they will cut the straps and you now have an unsecured load. If it falls to the road dot will write several tickets. I try to teach safety, in strapping never have exposed straps, though it's hard in a double drop.
Yep playing catchup watching these. The U.P. of Michigan is beautiful year round. We love are 4 wheeler and snowmobile trails. I dont like the side by side they are too much like cars and our trails can break them.
Rolls of paper can be a hazardous load, my uncle had a load of rolls of paper shift while exiting a highway and it rolled his rig back down the embankment to the highway. Wrote off his rig, damaged his heart badly enough his license got pulled on medical grounds.
"DOT in the rest area". At first, I was WTF? Then I figured since they're gonna be out there anyway, its likely safer than a roadside. Years ago, SCDOT had a short off/on station on I-85S just south of US29 in Spartanburg. That installation was a killer. The so-called "off ramp" lane was only long enough for 5-6 rigs before truckers had to stop in the right lane of the 2-lane interstate. Back before flashing signs and notices for truckers, it was just a metal road sign that said Weigh Station All Trucks Next Right. The sweeping right hander leading up to stopped trucks in the right lane killed a lot of motorists before SC got wise and closed it for good.
The thing about going off route on an unknown route is just that you don’t know what’s on that route.There may be bridges that you’re not allowed to cross because of weight or could be a low bridge because you’re over height.I agree with the other commenter about pulling over and waiting.I speak from experience DOT will fine you for being off route.
Hey Steve, this video brought up a question. If you had an oversized load on this trip and that first responder detour, had you going out of your permitted route, would you have to call and get a new permit or be allowed the way around without it? I'm asking because I've never done oversized loads.
DO not deviate from approved route without permission, period. For the amount of time it would take for the bureaucracy to grind thru all that (and possibly still screw it up) you'd almost be better off pulling off to the side and waiting for EMS to clear their scene; if it affects the delivery schedule, so be it, but let dispatch and/or client know! Out of your control. If its a major scene, a structure fire, then yeah, try to get a reroute approved.
It is a federal charge to interrupt your 10 off. Look, it up, make a citizen's arrest of out of order authorities and Sue them not just in civil, but in common law as an individual. Then they'll pay the f****** attention.

Trucks fundamentally havent changed. They just added more plastic and added some aftertreatment. There the same engine blocks with a new name. Brakes frames axles seats hardly anything has actually changed from the 80’s. Todays trucks are going to be a PITA to fix in 40 years when the circuit boards are old or the digital dash goes out. By then im sure guys might just delete all that stuff and throw in a mechanical motor
@@mikeking7038 ya....in the 90ies I overhauled 3406b for under 3500 dollars of parts not including my labor....I have been told that many engines now can be 49 to 60 thousand depending on type of failure....Sure takes the fun out of trucking....Owner operator and small fleets are an endangered species right now..Last comi I worked for refused my demand to do machine work on an old 3406 b engine block and I wouldn't rebuild it if they didn't do it....Boss took it to the Cat dealer.and the bill was over 40 thousand with a new block.. Everything now is dealer orientated... independent shops can't get tech support or warranty assistance...They also raised the parts prices on the old stuff sky high.... Aftermarkey parts are a mixed bag....some good some bad...take your chances

I'm thinking hard of where to move as well. There's been so much movement in the US these last three to four years where people are fleeing certain states for obvious reasons to another state. I've seen so much construction in once what would be considered rural less populated areas and it just destroyed that small town America laid back feel of that area. Where there was once less traffic quietness and a stillness many of us can appreciate now changed to noise more traffic and new residents with pissy attitudes very different from the chill welcoming polite mannerisms of said area. It's been a chore finding somewhere I can plant roots and settle down.
If they pulling you in on highway ive no issue with them being in rest area but if you already there and they disturb you then thats when i would have an issue. Ive been pulled in at i 196 north at the rest area around 30 mm but they just said i was good didnt even check my lights. I love the east jordan area and also buckley. Pretty much all northern mi is nice. This weekend my sister inlaw planning a trip back to the island. I planned a trip were me and mom went to the soo locks during covid and then brothers fam met us on the fairy to the island which double surprised mom by going to island and brothers fam met us

Near Fenton and Clio area either 23 or 75 it’s fairly common. Might only be 3 or 4 hrs and then they pack up and leave.

@@mikeking7038 ya....in the 90ies I overhauled 3406b for under 3500 dollars of parts not including my labor....I have been told that many engines now can be 49 to 60 thousand depending on type of failure....Sure takes the fun out of trucking....Owner operator and small fleets are an endangered species right now..Last comi I worked for refused my demand to do machine work on an old 3406 b engine block and I wouldn't rebuild it if they didn't do it....Boss took it to the Cat dealer.and the bill was over 40 thousand with a new block.. Everything now is dealer orientated... independent shops can't get tech support or warranty assistance...They also raised the parts prices on the old stuff sky high.... Aftermarkey parts are a mixed bag....some good some bad...take your chances

I'm thinking hard of where to move as well. There's been so much movement in the US these last three to four years where people are fleeing certain states for obvious reasons to another state. I've seen so much construction in once what would be considered rural less populated areas and it just destroyed that small town America laid back feel of that area. Where there was once less traffic quietness and a stillness many of us can appreciate now changed to noise more traffic and new residents with pissy attitudes very different from the chill welcoming polite mannerisms of said area. It's been a chore finding somewhere I can plant roots and settle down.

If they pulling you in on highway ive no issue with them being in rest area but if you already there and they disturb you then thats when i would have an issue. Ive been pulled in at i 196 north at the rest area around 30 mm but they just said i was good didnt even check my lights. I love the east jordan area and also buckley. Pretty much all northern mi is nice. This weekend my sister inlaw planning a trip back to the island. I planned a trip were me and mom went to the soo locks during covid and then brothers fam met us on the fairy to the island which double surprised mom by going to island and brothers fam met us
