Blacksmithing - Forging a Hammer Drift (for factory made handles)

  • In this video I make a hammer drift that is used to drift the eye when you forge a hammer. It's just a tapered oval shape, and you can use any dimension you like, but I make this one to fit two sizes of factory made handles. It involves a lot of grinding to get it right, but in the end it fits like a glove!

Both of you have and are a big influence on smiths like myself it would be brutal to see you both work together. And it has been brutal to see torbjörn and nils ögren working together. Thanks all of you for helping me become a better smithy godbless you both and good health.

this is something I am going to have to think about making soon..I usually make all my own handles from scratch but Ash is becoming very difficult to get hold of here (since ash die back killed most trees) and Hickory doesn't appear to grow here so I am stumped for growing my own handle wood....So shop bought handles may be the way forward
THanks for sharing Torbjorn your attention to detail and ability to make beautiful and practical tools is always a pleasure to watch.

Very skilfully done, it’s a pleasure to watch you work . I’ve been trying to work out how long I’ve been watching your videos for, it must be some years now, when I first started watching that container of linseed oil was at least half full. Here in Aus we use “spotted gum” timber for handles, does the job but not as good as hickory in my opinion. Spotted gum tends to dry out and create splinters, which is not good for hammer handles. Regards from Down Under.

Very nice! I your videos are so well done. Very entertaining. I have made many long drifts/punches out of air hammer bits. They work well. However, years ago I moved to a process where the power hammer did all the work. This required various dedicated bolsters and assorted tooling. One must match handles to the drift. You show this well! I shifted to a short drift 4” to 5” made from H13. I have taken a hammer vacation lately. But your video has given me the itch!
