  • This is the new version of this commentary with the missing scenes included only for the European version, that go further into the feeling of being alone in the house with a ghost. I've even noticed something else in the background after doing this upload. It was a pretty dark and creepy feeling. but in any event if you have already watched this then you can skip ahead to the house on the fjord or enjoy it all over again with your favourite beverage of choice!

Me too. I watched man vs wild growing up too (I’m 28) and I found it interesting and informative (I thought as a kid). I’ve always loved Survivorman the most out of the survival shows but when I learned man vs wild was bullshit and as I’m maturing I appreciate and love Survivorman and Les’s innovation and artistic integrity. He doesn’t treat his audience like they are morons.

Les, you've alluded to numerous 'strange' things happening to you out in the wilderness during several Survivorman: Bigfoot commentaries, this episode, and other places. Any chance you'll ever make a video compiling all the stories of these strange happenings into one place? I know I'd love to see that.
Also, big fan, your work is always awesome.

@@SteveEdzPainter oh there really is something strange in the wilds, theres countless people who have seen and or experienced it and spoken about it, all around the world, too many to call them all fake, I have seen and heard things I still can't explain in the wilds of the woods here in canada and I grewup all my life outdoors, I know lots of the animals here and learned all that are in my area and stuff I can't explain no animal can explain, only when I learned from the local native medicine man the stories he told from his clan and the tales passed down from gerneration to generation kinda explained it a little bit, you have to experience the weird to know it and you really don't want to see it you will turn white as a ghost and be scared to death! whatever it is needs to be given respect of the wilds to start its no joke.

@@SteveEdzPainter when I seen it with a old friend my friend was abusing the land not sure if that had a thing to do with it making itself seen and scarying us out of there, but the natives here call it "the guardian of the forrest" so I really wonder, I used to camp out there lot's in the area once one whole summer I was out there and then I only heard weird things around my camp always kept away from the fire light and far from where my flashlight could reach, I don't know if good or bad depends on what makes them get seen. I do know it is a creature needing lots of respect as in don't disturb its home, don't be a threat kinda stuff but who knows, it wasn't easy to have the medicine man teach me and my family at one point has relations in three rivers cree, so the averadge person they won't really speak to sadly don't blame them many think there telling wild stories.

My father, and uncle etc all grew up building canoes when paps opened up the shop back in NB - and i spent a great deal of time canoeing and camping with my father growing up. I'm not big into Nationalism - so there are few things that make me feel "proud to be a Canadian", or - "i'm happy they are Canadian", or they are "ours". However if someone were to ask - my response would be "the tragically hip", and "Les Stroud". Great to see your channel growing!

I never believed in ghosts or spirits until I worked in an old house and when I was alone (and many times when I wasn’t), I would hear footsteps, doors would open and close, voices, and a deep sense of not being alone. I would have to tell clients that I was expecting coworkers to be coming in and leaving so that when they heard someone walking around and talking, they wouldn’t get freaked out. We moved the business to another location and I have not had a single creepy weird experience. I know exactly the feeling you felt. Was it all in your head? Was it all in mine? Who knows? But it didn’t seem all in my head when clients asked me who was calling my name in the other room and I knew we were “alone”. I’m just glad to be out of there, finally.

During the freaky Norwegian house examination and how you described your feelings for the upstairs of that house, it really reminded me of the concept of liminal spaces. Liminal spaces are unsettling spaces, not of conventionally haunted areas like graveyards or rundown mansions, but spaces that exist in everyday life and are familiar, but are incredibly unsettling when someone stops and actually examines it like what you did when surveying the 2nd floor of that house. One other common aspects of these spaces is its emptiness when the it would be stereotypically full of human activity. Another is lighting. Lighting plays a big part in a lot of liminal spaces and those rooms with the super dark hall way gives off some eerie vibes.

Looking at the new scenes when preparing mussels gives creeps even during daylight, especially when there is hanging from the celling thing in the background, slightly swinging. Then maybe sitting in silence eating if not recording or talking to camera. Not to mention whole house is creepy af, it doesnt look(atleast on what is provided by camera here) people actually were staying there for more than a day if they could get there by motorboat in less than an hour or could even left it unatended for longer time. Even little details like what looks like a Norwegian flag on the floor in 1:43:24 I mean if it is a flag I dont think any countryman would let that lay on the ground since they love to nail their flag to the walls in the cabins this must've been hung before and laid there for a long time. Nice creepy music or no music in right moments adds to it.

Why is it that nobody leaves any food at these remote cabins? Freeze dried, canned, dried, low perishable sealed items. Shelter is great, but shelter with food is much better. Even a .22 for small game would help greatly. You might lose a few bucks of food, but the help to another person would be immense.

Yeah men. That part going down that, steep, ice, rugged snow covered mountain side, really got to me. I was once in the middle one, on the snow and ice covered descend.
But I wasn't lost and he'd a jeep waiting for me at the bottom to take me home. I still don't know, how you survived that night, sitting all wet and soaked to the bone in that rock outcropping ? Especially hypothermia being a real ticking bomb. You are one tough Survival Man.

@1:27:19 On the note about "Nothing Noble" I think you're selling yourself short Les, any lesser man would've given up and died there on that mountain but no not you why? Because you are THE Survivorman. One of the few people that I look up to. Your teachings and words resonate with me so much still after all these years of watching you.

At 1:13:20... That's the scariest thing (at least for me), when you realize you're alone and your brain doesn't work anymore. I wasn't cold like Les was, but too hot. I was sitting on a rock 20 feet from a river with a washrag in my pack. I had packed it specifically for cooling myself off. But I couldn't make my arms and legs work to pull it out and walk that far. "Oh, water, that'll cool me off... man, it's hard to stand up... I need to get my washrag first... for the water over there... oh, water, that'll cool me off..." And I realized I wasn't thinking straight but couldn't seem to stop it.

perhaps Les was primed for a spiritual experience/encounter prefaced by solitude, fasting, heavy physical and emotional strain, and a trudge down a mountain resulting in a deep sense of appreciation just to simply be alive. concluding in a ancient pagan viking settlement. set and setting! "its all in your mind you just dont know how big your mind is"

I can't believe Les didn't take that deer tongue, that's a really good piece of meat. If you're ever in a survival situation you can take the tongue and char it on a fire, then scrape the tougher flesh off of the tongue with a knife. You can also get a good amount of fat from behind the eyes. The jaw meat is really good too! (I am in no way trying to say I know more than Les by any means, I'm just a hunter that's harvested meat from animals I didn't SEE Les harvest, doesn't mean he didn't, just means I didn't see it, and I wanted to offer up a helpful bit of info!)

Maybe what you felt was Death itself being upset that you survived the trip down the mountain and dodged all the cliffs and made it into a home. Then Death decided from your humility in asking permission to stay the night that it could leave you be.
Or maybe it was the spirit of someone who fell down those cliffs and died and was angry at how you avoided the same fate despite your overzealousness. But your humility again convinced it to leave you alone.

If the "spirits" left you alone after that then they were good spirits (protective). Obviously a bad spirit wouldn't have
let you get any rest. I had an encounter like that in the Sierra Nevada where on a hot afternoon with no wind suddenly
a cool wind gust came out of nowhere and buffeted me and I started thinking "Indian spirits". I told them the same,
that I meant no harm and the gust quickly died down and there were no more while I was out there.

I used to get the creepy ghost feeling a lot as a kid. Walking outside always cured it. I think it's something inherently uncanny about the new "being inside" thing that we, or at least some of us, haven't had time to evolve into yet.
At least when you're outside, you can see everything coming. Inside you can't see anything that might pop up around a corner. When in survival mode, I'd imagine that feeling being intensified.

Les I’m a big fan. I respect how you do everything the right way and don’t fake anything. But I’m really wondering respectfully, why not have a few small extra precautions for yourself in certain situations? For instance, why not have a spare change of cloths or anything to help on you avoid hypothermia? Why not bring even extra water in the kalahari desert? I respect everything you were doing and accomplished, I just wonder why not have a small small safety net for yourself?
