Seeing the Sting rant is super bizarre, because by the time this game came out Sting hadn't spoken a word on WCW programming in well over a year (if I'm correct, Sting's legendary "You're a dead man" to Hogan didn't happen until the build up to SuperBrawl VIII, which would be AFTER this game first came out), and the fact that it's early Crow face paint (from, like, late 1996) makes it even more odd. Is it possible that the "Turbo" ring was an attempt to give the game an arena with less components to render, so as to try and allow for a "turbo" match with less/no slowdown? Or is that giving too much credit?
WCW Nitro and Thunder were once of my favorites on the PS1. The buttons you need to press will get usual once you get to play this game more often. I loved it when you all the time play the tournament with a different character and unlock a new character afterwards. WCW Nitro 1995 till 1998 were good times as a kid to watch on TNT.

everything going at break neck speed, going to the top rope without any reason, and no one gets hurt when taking a bump outside the ring... this game was 25 years ahead of it's time.
Based on the main (re: not ridiculous) roster of wrestlers, Inland/WCW settled on who they did between January-July 1997. Jacqueline debuted on camera in January and Madusa's last match before her 1999 comeback was in July, and as far as I know, every other real wrestler/on-air personality was on the books in that time period. That said, as roster goes, it aged pretty well compared to a game like WWF War Zone (which had Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith almost a year after Montreal). Of the actual roster of WCW wrestlers and on-camera talent, I believe the only three who weren't used on camera by WCW in 1998 were Syxx, Madusa, and Jacqueline
Them hidden unlockables and the arenas, man the developers must have been smoking something when they decided to put a alien, a dinosaur, ghost and some other crazy characters not to mention the areans especially WCW Turbo the ring with no crowd no stage sped up speeding real fast lol
It’s actually funny. This was the game that got my mother to buy me an N64. My mom was also a gamer and we had a PlayStation and then all my other friends had N64 and one of my friends brought in 64 over and we played WCW World Tour and my mom loved it, so when Nitro came out, she figured since THQ made it, that it would be the same. We had Nitro for 3 days and my mom couldn’t get the hang of it and we went and got a N64 and a copy of World Tour
I remember around the time this game came out I was like 10 or 11 at the PX and this dad wanted to buy a wrestling game for his kid he knew nothing about wrestling so he asked me because I was looking at the games and I told him I knew nothing of WCW because I was Team WWF and I told him this game is new maybe he would like this and months later I ran into the dad somewhere he recognized me and thanked me because his kid “loved this game” I still think about that moment from time to time
WCW Nitro had great graphics for its time and those rants on the character select screen were epic. Modern pro wrestling games should steal that concept. Where WCW Nitro fell drastically short was gameplay. Idk if it were possible at that time but THQ should’ve collaborated with the AKI team to create their type of gameplay engine. That would’ve made this game perfect. And I had hope that WCW Thunder, the sequel to Nitro would be better. In a few minor ways it was. But both games fell short of any standards set by the AKI n64 games. Honestly, WCW vs the World or WCW Mayhem would be the best ps1 games which is a real shame because the n64 got much better games.
Different taunts refilling your health the longer they last was the biggest "strategic" move you could make with your character selection. Taunts like The Outsider's crotch chop gave you a small health boost you could throw out whenever you got the chance, but Ric Flair's entire strut-into-WOO gave you back like half a lifebar.
Admittedly I was a mark for WCW in its heyday but the idea of wrestling a bee in a beehive, when I am allergic as hell to them, yeah, that doesn’t work for me, brother. Not even the power of Hulkamania could save that as something I would ever want to do. Thank God I ended up playing WCW/nWo Revenge instead.
The gaming industry in 97 was a lot different to today. Developers were still in the arcade mindset due to how popular Mortal Kombat was so that would explain the decision to go with button combos. I don't think quality was a concern. WCW just wanted a product to put on shelves, in the hope that there would be enough blind purchases to outweigh the smaller game budget. It worked. WCW Nitro on the original Playstation actually got a Greatest hits release (green label) this means that the original game actually sold well eventually selling well enough for a sequel WCW Thunder. It's a shame WCW didn't make into the PS2 era by this time it would have been interesting to see how good a WCW game could have been but I'm at least glad WCW got a good wrestling game in Revenge when the company was still at their peak.
In the PC version of Nitro vs NWO there was a very rare glitch, seriously a 1 in a billion chance of the following. In the game you could press C on pc to cheat and get a random wrestler to interfere. In rare cases the wrestler would attack you but in EXTREMELY rare cases a glitch would occur where the skins didn't load correctly! What happens? You see their entrance, you see the camera angle moving, the announcer announces said wrestler but he's COMPKETELY INVISIBLE! I can't tell you how hard I laughed in 99 when I essentially got my ass thrown out of the ring, frog splashed and pinned by an o visible wrestler!
When you saw the gameplay on a display screen in K-mart it looked so good you couldn’t wait to get home and see what the perceived sequel to World Tour felt like.
I don't think the FMVs were possible on the N64. The only reason they could do that on the playstation is that CDs have a capacity of around 700 MB whereas N64 cartridges topped out around 64 MB. Those short video files probably ate up about 1-2 MB each. There isn't even enough storage space on the cart for the promos alone. That's why you didn't see FMV on the N64. The cartridges simply didn't have enough storage capacity.
I was an N64 kid until i started working so i had world tour. I remember seeing pictures of the gameplay in magazines and being blown away with how much better looking it was than World Tour.... Im sure you noticed the key would their- Pictures. for example, compare and contract Ric Flair's sprite in nitro vs World tour with his flat face. Not til the Ps3 era did i play Nitro and you know what happened. The Grass was not greener on the other side.

If you held down all top ps1 buttons at the same time, everyone would immediately stop and do the WMCA
"WCW Turbo" sounds like WCW trying to invent WWE Speed by a good couple of decades.
As a kid who got into WCW after Sting became crow sting, this was the first time I ever heard Sting talk!
This was a great game. Esp for it's time. One of my favs. Can't compare what was then vs what we see now
Them hidden unlockables and the arenas, man the developers must have been smoking something when they decided to put a alien, a dinosaur, ghost and some other crazy characters not to mention the areans especially WCW Turbo the ring with no crowd no stage sped up speeding real fast lol
That’s dedication, I had this game and knew nothing about developers putting themselves into game or “nameless suit and tie guys”
I LOVED this game as little kid...the first wrestling game I ever owned.
"7 times out of 10 someone will interfere with your match." So, this is very accurate to WCWs actual booking?
The Buzz level used to freak me out too
big show : sell this move * suplex scott*
scott : nope
I remember around the time this game came out I was like 10 or 11 at the PX and this dad wanted to buy a wrestling game for his kid he knew nothing about wrestling so he asked me because I was looking at the games and I told him I knew nothing of WCW because I was Team WWF and I told him this game is new maybe he would like this and months later I ran into the dad somewhere he recognized me and thanked me because his kid “loved this game” I still think about that moment from time to time
For me I liked WCW Nitro a lot because I only had a ps1 but with its limitation using the cheats helped a lot in replay value. AWESOME VID
Honestly, WCW vs the World or WCW Mayhem would be the best ps1 games which is a real shame because the n64 got much better games.
man...
some real old memories unlocked here
once revenge and the wwf games came out i never looked back but i remember putting some time into nitro
I remember as a kid being so desperate for wrestling games in 98-99 that I had convinced myself WCW Nitro on N64 was a good game.
I actually enjoyed this game 25 years ago. The gameplay in vs the world is better but the graphics in that were poor.
I played the character screens so much I remember every word they said
When you saw the gameplay on a display screen in K-mart it looked so good you couldn’t wait to get home and see what the perceived sequel to World Tour felt like.
Steve's coffee quote is legendary. I can't hear it enough.
I thought it was a decent wrestling game when it released, but given how awesome wwf games were at the time, it just couldn't hold up.
WCW 👍
Gone but never forgotten
I don't think the FMVs were possible on the N64. The only reason they could do that on the playstation is that CDs have a capacity of around 700 MB whereas N64 cartridges topped out around 64 MB. Those short video files probably ate up about 1-2 MB each. There isn't even enough storage space on the cart for the promos alone. That's why you didn't see FMV on the N64. The cartridges simply didn't have enough storage capacity.
11:50 Wait, you mean that Dweeble, Annie Mae and Greyling weren't WCW wrestlers? Damn, I was anticipating the RTW video showing their debuts...
I wish Herb Abrams and UWF still alive on that time and make a game like this. We would love to hear Herb rant 😆
Fuckin random 😂
I was an N64 kid until i started working so i had world tour.
I remember seeing pictures of the gameplay in magazines and being blown away with how much better looking it was than World Tour.... Im sure you noticed the key would their- Pictures.
for example, compare and contract Ric Flair's sprite in nitro vs World tour with his flat face.
Not til the Ps3 era did i play Nitro and you know what happened.
The Grass was not greener on the other side.
