    Yes I think it’s right for these pictures going out.
    As a family member that would see Jonas unclipping his leg would give a sense of relief he didn’t sever his spinal cord.
    Sad day for racing.

    A point was made that showing what is going on helps their friends and loved ones know how they are doing, sometimes being the only source of solace at the time.
    It is painful for us, but there are those that really need to know.
    Sounded reasonable to me.

    Wishing all those involved a speedy recovery.... my thoughts are that it's a good thing that they show what's going on at the crashes. A lot of family and close friends would be watching and there's no quicker way to get the information across than the live broadcast. Seeing the rider lifting a leg, or a 👍🏻 on the stretcher means a lot.

    Broke my collarbone and 4 ribs (ribs #7-10) in a crash last year. The rib breaks/fractures where significantly harder to deal with than the collarbone. Had to sleep sitting up in bed for at least the first month and breathing/coughing was not enjoyable. Heal up quick boys.

      Can confirm this. My husband had 6 broken ribs, pneumothorax and a multiple broken collarbone, surgery with 12 screws. The most pain came from the ribs for months. Even now, 15 months later, the rib which occured the pneumothorax is still painful, because not enough calls yet on the "sharp" ends.

    Typically a young fit pro-athlete like Jonas will have the collar bone surgically pinned (this is what WVA had done after his recent crash) and the ribs will be conservatively treated - so 6 weeks of reduced activity and then a graded program of training.

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 6 місяців тому +13

      Broken ribs can cause problems that last much longer than that. They can also not be a huge deal at all. As for the collarbone, they're similar. I've broken mine and was doing 5-7hr rides 2 days later without surgery. I just couldn't pull up on the bars. Some need surgery but you can at minimum, ride on a recumbent very early IF it's only a collarbone. I've had very bruised ribs that made it hard to train for months

    • @selcukcilek555
      @selcukcilek555 6 місяців тому +4

      @@veganpotterthevegan Exactly . Broken ribs can enter the lungs causing the lungs to deflate and is sometimes life threatening. The biggest risk is that a daily highly trained body suddenly is down to zero. That can cause blood clots. Blood mostly needs medication so it can stay thin.

    Skjelmose said something interesting. He said the route this year are easier, so even when they put some crazy numbers, there are still 60 riders. Maybe with the new advancement of tech, nutrition, training, recovery and the higher level of fitness of the peloton, they should start putting harder route, to compensate with the level of higher fitness of the peloton these days. Anyway, today is such a bad day. So many riders were injured and left the race with broken bones. Hope for their speedy recovery.

      yes - this crash reminds me of the crash of Van Aert . something is up. i was thinking that the racing has become more intense as they seem to start racing from the get go. the riders are used to 6/7 hours or physical exercise, but perhaps not to 6/7 hours of mental chess games in their minds. so perhaps the are mentally exhausted and make silly mistakes?

    • @eljanrimsa5843
      @eljanrimsa5843 6 місяців тому

      They should decide races on the climbs, not on crazy technical descents. They can't put the riders and roads in enough padding and safety nets to make it safe. Therefore the descents should become neutral sections racewise where you are not supposed to take risks and improve your position.

    Chris Horner in his channel (when Wout crashed) explained that if a collarbone is plated surgically, a rider can often ride the trainer a day or two after surgery. He also details the “broken” ribs options depending on severity of the fractures. He’s no MD obviously, but he was speaking from his experience as a pro cyclist.

    Wow, just woke up and saw the headlines and it's shocking to see. ☹️
    It really puts into perspective the new chicane addition to Paris Roubaix: this crash has cemented in my mind that the chicane is a good change.
    Some riders will complain because it is in their nature to race and take risks, but at the end of the day, safety is paramount - the Paris Roubaix organisers may become scapegoats but the race will be safer because the organisers are taking responsibility for rider safety (for once, rather than typically blaming the victim for crashing).

    • @eljanrimsa5843
      @eljanrimsa5843 6 місяців тому

      Exactly. As speeds get faster, and human bodies remain the same, the organizers need to act and make the most dangerous spots safer. The Paris-Roubaix chicane planner also said in the long term it would make more sense to have safer bikes and equipment.

    Being an athlete they will likely do surgery to repair the fracture. The orthopedist will make an incision and expose the fracture fragments. He/she will align the fragments and stabilize them using a plate and screws or pins. With fractures pain is caused when fracture fragments move. Without surgery the patient has to keep his arm in a sling to prevent such movement. By using internal fixation the fracture fragments are made stable allowing earlier movement and hopefully return to function.

  • @perryfeyk1449
    @perryfeyk1449 6 місяців тому

    Thanks for a good report and commentary. Seems that, as always, the crash is a collection of factors. Since the race was stopped I do not know, if sprint points/time bonuses were a factor as well. I do wonder about the awarding of bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint points. Because points AND seconds are up for grabs, it seems that there is very hard racing for these points from both GC and sprinters. Teams are more compelled to chase down a breakaway earlier because there is time on the line for the GC guys. Those point sprints are dicey, but it also seems that there is really aggressive racing for many k's before those points. i agree with other comments that if the course were harder given the new normal of field quality, that would help, and if there were no time bonuses at the sprints in a tight GC field, there would be less aggression leading into a sprint point. I remember the old days of the Giro, when there were no bonus seconds anywhere, not even at the finish. There is something to be said about the purity of such a GC win. Time bonuses make the racing more lively and aggressive, and of course with that come added risks. I wish all the riders a speedy recovery, and ask that all riders approach descents with, along with their competitive nature, caution. I was surprised to see, on a fast descent, the field four plus wide going into that turn.

    At this point, projection of when they return for what race, sort of makes sad. I’m still in shock just watching them lay there, but so happy when it was obvious they were conscious. No shade on anyone who disagrees, just my feelings.
    Video of the crash, yes, but one or 2x. I’m hopeful that Jonas’, Jay’s, Remco’s & others wives and families were notified ASAP. We like to know how they are but after the family.
    Last thing, the camera angle was weird, but a right hand turn pitched dow toward the left (storm drain), seems really dangerous. Speed, momentum, gravity, other physics forces… I’m surprised more didn’t go down.

    Thanks, Scott, and no, nobody should be fired or canned or anything, this is clearly a racing incident and lessons need to be learned and improvements made, but that is for another day. But if the roads are bumpy and sketchy, perhaps it is time to gravel-up the bikes with larger tires and that would be pro racing imitating the rest of us dealing with public roads. Sure, speeds would be a bit slower with 40s or whatever, yet with the way tech seems to find a way around everything, next thing you know 40s could be the standard, who knows. And I say all of that with a love for cycling and all of us and I just want the pros to bounce up from crashes the way roller derby girls did when I watched them on UHF television after my bike rides as a kid. 😀

I wouldn't dream of not riding on the local bike path without that bit of protection for my hands.

  • @keithmcphail1152
    @keithmcphail1152 6 місяців тому

    Just sharing: our cycling team discovered that if you allowed yourself to rest for several days, let the bones start knitting together, you could very carefully get back on the trainer and have pedal sessions. Our speed to recovery improved from ~6 weeks to ~3-4 weeks. This is a complete recovery, but you could rely on the bones if you went out riding. Still some pain from the stress pressure of having your hands on the bars, but usually doable.
    The doctors confirmed what we thought: the spinning exercise raised the injured cyclist's internal metabolism. The slight exercise, instead of lying in bed healing, activated the production of more red blood cells and other aspects of healing. My good friend Dave was out with us, doing a 45 miler 3 weeks after his broken collarbone. He might be exceptional, but others showed more or less the same accelerated healing.
    Good luck to Jonas. First Wout and now him. Boy, what a start.

As dire as watching those pictures are, I do believe that seeing the pictures is the right way -- admittedly I would draw the line at cameras filming the resuscitation of a rider - but you see they're in trouble and they need hospital assistance, you just pray that they're okay. I guess I might not be airing a popular opinion but it's my own feeling that their needs to be some showing - we can't blanket the thing out altogether.

I think why more crashes are happening doesn't just have one reason, it's a combination of all changes of culture, bikes and routes. What can you do about it is the real question. I mean like the helmet we could have some kind of protection generalised for racing to protect the colorbone, knees, ribs as those seem to be the most common injuries.

    Makes sense they all hit the bumps in the road at relatively high speed-- enough to make you lose control of your bike. It is surprising the race organizers don't look for and fix this type of road hazard on a downhill curve. I've experienced hitting bumps in corners on both bike and moto and the same thing happens if you're going to fast--bounces your wheel right off the pavement and a moment lack of steering! Hope for speedy recovery for all the crash victims. Sure throws a glitch into the season!

    Unless the video is exceptionally graphic, I think its important for everyone to see and understand that gravity of the situation, Tastefully of course. Showing the same angle replay multiple times though does seem a bit unnecessary.
    I know if I was Family/Friends of a rider that went down, I would want to know what happened / what is happening, having a media blackout just makes it so you have to go on a wild goose chase online to find any pictures or information because anyone that posts a replay of the crash online is just swarmed by people telling them to delete it.

    Do we know for sure if it's a broken collarbone? Because it could be just fractured, and then the recovery time is possibly way less.
    I remember last spring the danish rider Emma Norsgaard went down and injured her collarbone, and she was back on the home trainer in like three weeks.
    No matter the degree of the injuries, we obviously wish all the riders a speedy recovery. God bedring, Vinge.

No offense to you (thank you for reporting) but it is crazy that we should find out details from 3rd party commentary channels and have virtually no information from eurosport or the race organisers.

    I crashed on the Haute Route Alps last summer clean breaking 5 ribs in my back and fracturing a few more at the front. I can tell you I could not get on my bike for 10 weeks and it took about 3 months to feel even vaguely normal. He will have to be on extremely powerful pain killers that will be opioids. The come down from such drugs is savage. Vingergaard maybe a world class athlete but he will not be right for the tour. Even if he is back on the bike in 5 or 6 weeks he will not feel right (it's like an alien has stolen your skeletal structure and replaced it with another set of bones - even now 8/9 months on I am still getting used to it), he will lose fitness as it impossible to exercise your cardio vascular system with badly broken ribs at the level he would need to compete and mentally it is so hard to deal with. If I were a rival team manager and Vingerguaard was at the tour, I would instruct my team to push really hard on the decents. Collar bones are fine, ribs are complicated. Surgeons will not operate on them unless it is life threatening generally speaking. The pain is off the chart for about 3-4 weeks, even with the drugs. The likelihood of a chest infection is extremely high.... trust me, every cough will make him scream and/or cry. It is impossible to sleep more than 30 minutes or so at a time and whole experience is truly horrific. I consider myself to be very strong mentally speaking, having spent 10 years in the UK military. This pushed me to my absolute limits and I feel so sorry for him. If he even manages to compete at the tour I would be delighted, but very, very surprised. If he were to get close to winning, it would be the stuff of legends!!!!

    My heart goes out to all the crash victims. I've been there. For years I've thought that the UCI should do more to protect the riders. Send out 5 or 10 riders to ride the course and identify all the danger spots . Then flag them All the riders who went off the road and down in the ditch might have been saved.

  • @joowsty
    @joowsty 6 місяців тому +2

    it says it takes 6-8 weeks without surgery, but i think they will do surgery and put in a plate, like they did with Wout van Aert. Cuz with a plate you can get back on your bike 2 days later. tho ofcourse Jonas also has other injuries so it will take longer. But for example Wout already did his first 4K walk yesterday and he also had his collarbone broken and some ribs (they plated his collarbone too in surgery).

    Does the camera belong there? Yes. These are our heros and we love them. We are connected almost like family and we deserve The Truth. In a World of scripted sports, this is real; with real risk; real danger and short of absolute gore, we should see the glory of victory; but also the harsh realites. May all the injured riders and all the broken hearted fans find healing and peace.

    Yes, these photos should go out. If the teams try to restrict them, viewers will seek them out more. Jonas seems to have been immune to misfortune for years, unlike some of his top tier rivals. He was probably due some bad luck. It happens to the best. Pro racers are always at risk. He should be ok for the tour. He won't be in top form, but he'll be there with straps and pain killers to keep him comfortable. The life of a pro.

    Chris Horner said on his podcast that during the Tour de France, when he was involved in the crash, everything was broadcasted on TV. NBC and ABC in the United States reached out to his wife to find out more. At the time, she didn't have any additional information beyond what was shown on TV. The point being, without the TV footage showing that he was moving, his wife wouldn't have known about his condition until they got in touch or his team updated her. As drastic as the pictures were, Jonas moving his leg was a sign that he did not sustain any spinal injury.

    Looks like a freak incident. Reorder in second or third seemed to hit a stone or divot in the road. Those behind it’s hard to see why they went off the road. Roads aren’t perfect - hey, try the ones in England. That’s why it’s called road cycling as opposed to track.

    These people are fiercely competitive and you can't curtail that or it wouldn't be sport. That said , like many other things , money is the equal driver : contracts for the riders based on results , spectacle for the viewers etc. Helmets were considered ridiculous ,even by riders , at one time.Now anybody not wearing a helmet for even a casual ride is considered an idiot.So things can change and not entail ruining our beautiful sport. Perhaps some grading of what roads can be ridden on by a generation of racers who are flat out from the start. Some thought ,some knowledgeable input , some changes. Hope all the guys become well and back at their best in the shortest , safest time.

    As far as i can tell the reporters, especially the camera men, respect a certain distance, and give information rather than sensation. It would be wrong to give close-ups, or show cruel pictures. That officials want to improve safety is most welcome, and i hope they will bent more seriously over the problem from now on. They have made progres but evidently not anough. Maybe they will for sure, because how many great have been lost by accidents... And finally we had three of the four best... But as you say, the important thing now is that they will feel well again as soon as possible. God bless!

    Liability should go to the organizers: They focus only in delivering a profitable show and sure welcoming drama why not, whatever helps for them to get big audience and $, without considering holistic safety and optimal racing conditions, it's a shame to see more and more bike accidents like this one.
