    I’m a hiking video shooter. I’m thinking this 18mm paired with the new 28-200mm. It’s absolutely essential for me to be light and the 18mm should be good for astro photography. Love your work. I need to go see if you go over your color grading process.

      Yup, the same duo I always keep with me. I also have the 20-60 and the 50/1.8. I don't use the former any more (now that I have a proper UWA prime) and the 50 only for f1.8 portraits, given that optically it isn't THAT good for generic shooting compared to the 28-200 at 50mm.

    I'd love to get this lens. It's a very trendy look you often see in commercials to go very wide and close to your subject. Kinda like Emmanuel Lubezki does, minus the deep depth of field lol.

      Definitely, as soon as they updated the AF on the LUMIX cams I wanted to test out what you could do with a wide angle as a solo operator (i.e. pulling off shots you'd need a focus puller for usually)

    I've come from the GX9 m43 eco system, and let me tell you... moving to full frame, especially on focal lengths 16-24mm it has been incredibly humbling 😅 Lovely footage, definitely agree that for smaller focal lengths it helps to turn the ibis off and go gimbal shooting - Why have we picked such an expensive creative outlet? Great vid Ed! :)

      I absolutely love the transition from m43 to full frame, however I’ve not tried any m43 lenses, I do have a stock pile of old m42 (35mm) lenses that work an absolute dream with an l-mount adaptor. Mostly use them for stills, but I’ve used my Helios 44-2 for some videos, only issues is pulling focus on a bigger camera but it’s all apart of the learning curve!

    I bought my S5 over Hanukkah on B&H, so as a holiday deal they sent me the Panasonic S 85mm prime lens which is so far the only lens I have for this camera (not for long though). Honestly didn’t know what to expect, but I really think it’s a fantastic lens especially with the f/1.8 aperture. It is a tad frustrating to only have a 85mm atm, so I’ll be interested to see how often I use it once I get some other focal lengths, but for a start out lens that came with my camera I couldn’t be happier honestly.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому +2

      I've heard great things about the 85mm, never shot with that focal length (have a 75mm DZO Vespid which I really like) - it might be my next choice - that or the 35mm... need to look into them both.

    • @BikesAndBatallas
      @BikesAndBatallas 7 місяців тому +2

      The first lens I had for the S5iiX was the 85mm, which I got on sale for like 250. It was obviously very tight for things around the house, but the images were very beautiful. But it had me wanting something more. I got the 20-60mm kit lens for cheap on a secondary market to sort of test out what focal lengths I'd like to use most. I know the 20-60 isn't supposed to have a lot of focus breathing, but I did notice it with my videos. I ended up buying a 50mm, which I love and use all the time and the 70-300 (for photography more than video). I just bought the 18mm and am loving it.

    • @micahdsjerven8145
      @micahdsjerven8145 7 місяців тому

      the 85mm did actually end up staying in my arsenal even after picking up a 24mm-70mm, and even after getting my hands on some "higher quality lenses" I still find myself using the 85mm quite often now. Like you said, the images are very clean, and now that I have a lens that fits most other situations and makes for some versatility, I really enjoy shooting on the 85mm when I get the chance cause the separation at f/1.8 is beautiful and its a lot less frustrating when you're not trying to force an 85mm perspective into a tight space. For the price especially, the Panasonic S 85mm is a great lens @@BikesAndBatallas

    Beautiful work as always Ed! Wide lenses shooting people draw comparisons with Terrence Mallick and/or Emmanuel Lubeszcki, a look I love, except they use the deep focus. This wide shallow focus look is really lovely. Do you miss the Lumix focus clutch? I have the Lumix 16-35, 24-105, 24-70, 70-200 (both f/2.8 and f/4) 50 f/1.4 (the og one that weighs a ton, is super expensive and optically perfect), Sirui FF 50 and 75 anamorphics & the 1.25x adapter, and last but not least the TTArtisan 11 f/2.8. I’ve clearly got too much and in the process of working out what I don’t need. I’m mounting these on a S1H, S5 and S5iiX. Needless to say I drive a beaten up 2011 Toyota Corolla 😂. I seem to be shooting very long a lot lately, even at 400mm using the Lumix 2x teleconverter on 70-200 f/4. Handheld this setup still produces excellent shots!

      We have a 2008 Honda Civic (currently with a flat battery) - but yeah it's an expensive passion isn't it! I've not used many of the pro lenses - only the 24-70. Tried the TT Artisan lenses recently - really loved them.
      Interesting that you're shooting long - it's something I rarely do - so I imagine at some point I'll probably get into it.... haha. What do you tend to shoot at those longer focal lengths - wildlife?

      @@EdProsser cars are overrated right? 😝 Events, concerts, etc. Last week I was producing and BCam on a shoot on Sydney harbour (where I live) for the relocation by the Navy of a decommissioned torpedo across the water by barge from Spectacle Island to a submarine museum in North Sydney via a staging point at the historic Cockatoo island museum site. Weird and spectacular pics to be had. My main cammo (ex Mythbusters!) was using a FX6 and stayed put at the barge landing point and I was sprinting up and down with the S5iiX and teleconverted 70-200 trying to sight the barge and get the approach shots. The marketing people running it didn’t have a clue what was going on and importantly couldn’t tell us where to look amongst the harbour boat traffic to point the cameras. How unusual. Anyway got the shot handheld at 400mm on f/16 (I think) of the torpedo being craned onto the barge about 300m away from where we were. Depth of field gets pretty shallow at 300m! A walk in the park for the AF on the S5iiX though. And the shot was sharp as a tack and nearly tripod stable. Lumix IBIS is the best.

    Finally! Been looking for more 18mm content from youtubers! I have the 50mm, 20-60, Tamron Macro 90mm. Wondering if I should go for 24mm or 18mm next. With the APSC crop at 60 fps my FOV is always around the 45mm-50mm with my lenses...so might want to go wider. I mostly do product photography, travel, and maybe some vlogging.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      The close focus on the 18mm is fantastic so with a crop you can get some nice shots. I think 18 can get you a slightly "edgier" look whilst the 24 will give you more conventional results - depends what you want to go for ...

  • @LaurenceLee
    @LaurenceLee Рік тому +4

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      I don't think you can go wrong - the 18mm obviously gets you wider - and you could always crop in on the frame if you want something similar to a 24. I think 18 might be a bit tricker for filming people - but you can get more interesting styles of shots if you're willing to experiment - but not always possible with client work...

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому +2

      Yeah this lens is pricey, there's currently a £100 off promotion on most stores which brings it down to around £660 - £700, I also saw there's a decent condition one going on MBP for £584 - which I'd have gone for at the time had it been available. I'm mostly going to use this lens for gimbal work and shooting wide for mini-docs

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      Yeah the 50mm was the first LUMIX S lens I picked up... I think I've just gotten a bit bored of that focal length and never really use it when shooting handheld, I've been pushing myself to shoot with wider lenses and get closer to the action.

    It's too bad that Panasonic / Sigma's ultrawide lenses don't have IBIS. I mean, they thought of pretty much everything for filmmakers with their lenses, except for lens stabilization in their ultrawide lenses. If you all don't know, using lens stabilization with body stabilization (as opposed to IBIS alone) on ultrawide lenses really helps reduce corner warping. (You can confirm this for yourself if you are using an adapted lens with IBIS, such as the Canon EF 16-35 f/4 L on the MC-21). Also, I guess shooting people at 18mm is... uh... an "aquired taste," as I guess is travelling to an exotic, picturesque location and then obliterating the background with a very shallow depth of field.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому +1

      Yeah or just bulk / rig the camera up to have a little weight, which will stabilise naturally, which is what I'll probably do.

The 18mm has a nice middle ground it looks like of stylistically wide, but also not so stylistically wide you can't use it in a multitude of ways. I honestly haven't noticed anything too crazy so far - I tend to shoot with diffusion / softer lenses, shoot wide open - and tend to shoot people rather than architecture / buildings so I'm guessing this helps reduce it. yeah the eternal dilema of which kit to buy next! I'm debating wether I would prefer getting a 14-28mm/4-5.6 for the increased flexibility in focal length or if I would miss the extra aperture. @@EdProsser Sound design is just so much of what makes a video great. I get mocked relentlessly for all my audio gear and editing in Audition, but subpar audio will absolutely undermine all the work you put into cinematography and grading. You can have the most beautiful match cuts, but if you have audio clipping or just poorly mixed, you're wasting talent. One great theoretical book is Audio Vision: Sound on Screen by Michel Chion, with an excellent introduction by the masterful Walter Murch.
      And speaking of audio; I just cherish it for itself. I have terabytes of stereo and ambisonic-B clips of my children as they have been growing up. We are inundated with visuals to the point that a pure, clean audio clip just activates parts of your brain that wouldn't otherwise be if we had accompanying audio. When the pandemic hit I would record everyone banging pots and pans on their balconies here in Madrid. Last year, when my grandfather was dying (and in the throes of dementia), I was on the other side of the world (I have lived in Spain half my life now). So I sent him a beautiful stereo clip of my 5 and 7-year old daughters telling him how much we loved him as gentle waves crashed around their feet and the seafoam popped in sparkles as the water flowed out. So we said goodbye to him in the best way we could, and I never though once of it being a video. I treasure that clip because I know it moved him deeply hours before he passed.
      There is power in what we do folks. I wish you all the best and thank you for making the content that you do.

    Hello @EdProsser! I'm figuring out which ND filter to buy (for my Lumix S5 and 24-105 F4) and I was wondering if you could give me some advice :) Is it better to buy variable ND filters or multiple ND filters? I heard that variable ones are much more versatile but are worse in quality than individual filters. I also noticed in the video that you have an adapter, maybe? So that you can use the same ND filters for different sizes of lenses? Thank you in advance!!

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  6 місяців тому

      My VND filter is the H&Y revo-ring it's great because it has a clever adjustable diaphragm which means you can put it on different filter thread sizes across diff lenses.
      Generally yes a VND will be more liable to colour cast and image degradation than a single stop ND. But the trade off of versatility is usually worth it in time saved swapping filters on and off.
